Still more questions than answers G
IVEN the continuing uncertainties and potential threats that confront the motorcycle industry in Europe, it is easy for the ‘green shoots’ of parts and accessory vendor reaction to last year’s trading to be drowned out by the inevitable concerns that cloud the future. Those concerns and uncertainties are the twin threats of EU regulation in the long-term, and the wider economic environment in the shorter-term, and the effect that has on consumer confidence. With 2011 motorcycle sales figures mixed (see StatZone on page 6) it is tempting to see the modest market-bounce experienced in Germany as pointing to better fortunes for dealers in 2012, and within the context of the important German market, the growth experienced last year is certainly to be welcomed. However, the best credential that helps inform speculation about parts and accessory prospects for 2012 is the anecdotal evidence of vendor expectations reported at EICMA in November. The majority of exhibitors that the IDN team met with reported satisfactory (if not wildly exciting) results in 2011, but in so doing, after several years of waiting for market optimism to return, the general ‘vibe’ that we were hearing from the parts and accessory sector was pretty good as far as expectations for 2012 were concerned. obody is expecting to see dramatic growth in the year ahead, but most of the vendors, who have survived the post-Lehman apocalypse, so far are eyeing the year ahead with a better mindset than that seen for several years. It would be a stretch to say that the market was actually ‘positive’ about prospects for 2012 as such, but even though as much of the optimism that does exist is driven by good housekeeping delivering a bottom-line as it is by product innovation or market growth as such, there is
nonetheless a sense that the consolidation of recent years has resulted in opportunities for those left standing. For some time to come the most active areas of the market are going to remain workshop and performance related products – service consumables, handling and tuning products, bolt-on accessories, etc. - and that is no bad thing, because an income base such as that is primarily dependent on the miles being done rather than new unit sales action as such. Indeed an income base such as that has ‘sustainable’ written all over it, and is one that can prosper from activity in the used motorcycle market just as much as it benefits from new model sales. inally, some news from us here at IDN – this is the final edition that Editor Al Franck has been managing for us, as after six years he leaves for new challenges with our best wishes and thanks for the work he has done on IDN in that time. Al has asked me to include this final message from him - “Thanks to all of you who have made my six years in the motorcycle industry so interesting and special. It has been an honour to talk to you, listen to your opinions, visit your companies, write about your challenges, and hang out with such a great bunch of people. “Times are hard for many at the moment, but I am convinced that this industry will roll with the punches and come back even stronger, because the people within it are so exceptional. All the best to you all!”

FREN CH REPO RT Didier Ganneau, editor of French motorcycle trade magazine L'Officiel du Cycle, de la Moto et du Quad, takes a look at the major issues currently affecting the industry in his country.
First in Europe? WHICH is the biggest market in Europe for powered two-wheelers? Italy? No longer! In 2011, France became the leader (including mopeds and Piaggio LTs), with 330,000 new units registered in 2011. This is twice as many as in Germany or Spain, and the sorpasso of Italy follows two years where sales there have fallen by 35%. Next question: which is the second largest manufacturer of PTWs in Europe after Italy? Spain or Germany? Neither! Since Yamaha closed its factory in Barcelona last Autumn (following Honda’s earlier retrenchment there), all production was transferred to the MBK plant at SaintQuentin in northern France. This means that, between them, more units are produced by MBK, Peugeot, Sherco and Scorpa in France than by manufacturers in any other single European country, bar Italy. Few people are aware of these fundamental changes in the European market. The French are wary about shouting this news from the rooftops because so many of the motorcycles they buy are designed in Japan and Germany, and their scooters in Italy and Taiwan. Perhaps when France reestablishes itself as an internationally-respected centre of motorcycle design, we will have more reason to celebrate our undoubted strengths.
Oxford Products to expand in 2012 UK motorcycle accessories specialist Oxford Products is to double the size of its distribution facility near Oxford to 7,500 sq.m. following a 100% increase in sales over the last five years. The company will also recruit more staff to facilitate continuing growth, according to the company. Managing Director Andrew Hammond said: “ Oxford’s business has expanded successfully over the last few years, but there is no room for complacency. We are planning many new product launches in 2012 to entice consumers back into dealerships. We want to drive more footfall than is generated by just bike purchases and servicing.” The most successful individual product in its inventory is the HotGrip, which it exports to over 60 other countries, alongside some 5,000 other Oxfordbranded products. www.oxprod.com

France makes hi-vis clothing compulsory MOTORCYCLISTS in France will be forced to wear high visibility clothing from January 2013, following a change in French road traffic law. An amendment to the French highway code will make it compulsory for riders of bikes over
125cc to wear a reflective item of clothing. The reflective area must be on the upper body and cover at least 150cm2. The requirement will apply to riders and pillion passengers, including foreigners travelling in France. Failure to comply
will lead to a fine of up to €100. France has also introduced a law making SatNav and Smartphone systems with speed camera locations illegal. Riders and drivers who violate this law, including those domiciled outside France, will be subject to fines of up to €1500.
2012 Moto Park exhibition, Moscow THE 9th international Moto Park exhibition will take place from 30 March-1 April 2012 at the IEC Crocus Expo site in Moscow. Moto Park is the only exhibition in Russia that covers all aspects of the motorcycling industry, according to organisers RTE Group, and is the keynote event for those interested in
this rapidly expanding market. In 2011 the exhibition brought together 94 exhibitors, and 180 brands from 24 countries and 74,000 visitors over the three exhibition days. In 2012, for the sixth consecutive year, MOTO PARK will be hosting the International Custom & Tuning Show, which is the Russian round of the
World Championship of Custom Bike Building, giving Russian custom bike builders the chance to win travel expenses to compete at the World Championship at Sturgis in the U.S. later in the year. www.motoparkshow.ru www.rte-expo.ru
HARLEY-Davidson has offered voluntary layoffs to its hourly employees at three of its engine and parts plants. The company wants to lay off 250 workers (26% of staff at those plants) and replace them with seasonal workers, saving $50 million a year. GRYPHON Investors, a San Francisco-based private equity firm, has acquired a majority interest in performance filter specialist K&N Engineering. Co-founder Jerry Mall and other current managers will continue to hold stakes in the company. ENGINE and hard parts specialist S&S Cycle is replacing its restrictive Internet Reseller Policy (IRP) with a Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) policy in response to the changing e-commerce market. S&S said the IRP limited its resellers’ ability to market and sell online.

INTERNATIONAL DEALER NEWS - FEBRUARY 2012
Italy’s best-selling motorcycle in 2011 was again the BMW R1200GS, with 5,134 registered, second was the Honda Hornet 600 with 1,746, third the BMW R1200R with 1,681 and fourth the R1200GS Adventure with 1,668. The best-selling scooter was the Honda SH300 with 12,688 registered, followed by the Piaggio Beverly 300 with 10,509 and the Piaggio Liberty 125RST with 8,574. IDN columnist Alan Cathcart says the slump in new unit sales is now bordering on catastrophic for the Italian retail industry, with many dealers going out of business.
Motorcycle sales in Italy have halved in the past five years, he points out, while scooter sales have declined by almost 40%. Other than the country’s general economic situation, he ascribes the contraction to the end of the country’s stimulus package for new PTW purchases in 2010. Another factor is the proliferation of speed cameras, as local authorities seek alternative sources of revenue following deep cuts in contributions from government. www.ancma.it

SBK - racing for gourmets! HE World Superbike Champion-ship (SBK) turns 25 years old in 2012, and starts its second quarter century of existence as part of the cache of companies owned by Bridgepoint, a European private equity investment firm. Last September, one of Bridgepoint’s investment funds acquired Infront Sports & Media, the owners of SBK – but another of its funds already owned MotoGP promoters Dorna, thus theoretically at least placing the two rival World Championship road racing series together under the same roof. At the same time, the seemingly inevitable confrontation between MotoGP and SBK, and between Dorna and Infront, moves ever closer, with MotoGP’s switch from an 800cc to a 1,000cc formula for 2012 – one in which a special sub-category of second division entries powered by Superbike-sourced engines has been established under the so-called CRT/Claiming Rules Team acronym, as a means of bolstering MotoGP fields which have fallen to alarmingly low levels, with just three manufacturers remaining on the grid after Suzuki’s
T
withdrawal at the end of 2011. This already seemed to justify Infront CEO Paolo Flammini’s widely expressed concerns that MotoGP was treading on SBK’s patch by allowing engines from the Production-based category to be used in what was always held up as a pure racing class. But Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta’s recent public pronouncements that he planned to make the CRT rules applicable across the board from 2013 onwards not only set him at loggerheads with the three factories still making full-race MotoGP bikes, but also seemingly with his new partner under the Bridgepoint umbrella, Infront. The chance to talk to Superbike supremo Paolo Flammini in his Rome offices obtained Infront’s response to these proposals, as well as an overview of the World Superbike series as it starts its 25th birthday year. AC: Paolo, in 2012 the World Superbike series will celebrate its 25th birthday. But after having seven different manufacturer-supported teams on the grid in 2011, you're now down to five, and although Suzuki has been replaced by Yoshimura, you’ve lost Yamaha completely, as well as Alan Cathcart with Paulo Flammini at Infront’s Rome headquarters

INTERNATIONAL DEALER NEWS - FEBRUARY 2012
Alstare, theleading privateer team which was the lynchpin of the entire paddock. Is SBK in crisis, perhaps as a result of the global economic situation? How do you see the coming season? PF: Firstly, we actually have six brands fully represented on the 2012 grid, because Crescent Suzuki must be considered a full SBK team. OK, maybe the Suzuki factory is not involved directly, but with the help of its partner Yoshimura, Crescent Suzuki will still compete at the highest level, and with two bikes - not one like Alstare had in 2011, plus riders of the calibre of John Hopkins and Leon Camier. Regarding Yamaha, we’re very sad about their decision to withdraw, because we believe it was made too quickly – if things had been more carefully and calmly managed, we’d probably still have Yamaha on the grid today, because there were sponsors interested to help maintain the team. Anyway, coming back to the general question of SBK’s status, for sure the economic crisis is the origin of certain problems. The Yamaha withdrawal was only due to financial reasons, as they explained in the press release they issued. The same can be said for Alstare – Francis Batta lost the support of many sponsors, but while he found others to replace them, these sponsors didn’t honour their contracts, so unfortunately Francis found himself in a very difficult position. Alstare in my opinion remains one of the bestoperated teams in the world, so I hope we may see them again on the Superbike grid, perhaps with another manufacturer new to the sport [details emerged after this interview of Alstare’s projected link with MV Agusta – AC] However, having spoken about these negative things, I think we can be extremely satisfied about the starting grid we will present next year in World Superbike, as well as in the other categories, with many riders
coming from Moto2 to take part in an ever-increasing World Supersport field, and strong numbers in the Superstock categories. AC: How many bikes will be on the World Superbike grid? PF: We will have 22 permanent bikes in the field, with six brands officially represented by well funded and reliable teams - so in my opinion, once again, the Superbike World Championship is demonstrating a strong inner strength in presenting a full grid with a great variety of different bikes, with riders of many different nationalities, together producing a great spectacle. At the same time, we at Infront Motorsport have put in place some initiatives which will help all the teams to reduce their operating costs, such as the new single bike rule and reducing the qualifying sessions from 60 to 45 minutes. AC: The issue of cost also concerns Dorna, and as we know, at the moment Carmelo Ezpeleta is pushing very hard to make the CRT bikes, or Moto 1 as many people term it, the universal MotoGP formula for 2013. You were very concerned from the outset that Dorna’s proposals to allow bikes with Superbike engines to race in the new 1000cc Moto1 formula would be a threat to SBK. How do you feel now that this has actually come to pass? PF: It appears that, contrary to our expectations, the World Superbike championship, even under the scenario you describe, is not being affected too much by this element at present, as measured by our excellent 2012 grid numbers. On the other hand, I maintain my concern, and I think that we will have to be extremely careful to monitor how this develops, together with the FIM, and I can say together with Dorna, too. That’s because in July 2011 we sat round a table with them to discuss co-
CATHCART REPORT operation, and we expressed these concerns during the meeting. We believe we must try to find a solution which is satisfactory for all the parties to avoid possible confusion between the two championships. AC: Well, particularly since under current SBK rules, the level of engine performance is essentially the same as will be the case in Moto 1. A Superbike like the Aprilia RSV4 or BMW S1000R essentially has a GP chassis. So at the stage that Mr. Ezpeleta succeeds in driving through Moto 1 for 2013, you’ll have SBK and MotoGP motorcycles with essentially the same level of performance. PF: I can tell you that the fact that Bridgepoint acquired Infront is a positive element. Even though so far we haven’t had any round table meeting since that happened, it’s still evident that Bridgepoint made an investment in both championships, and clearly their interest is to develop both series, or products as you call them, and not to penalise one to give advantage to the other. Bridgepoint’s job is to develop companies – they don’t buy them in order to destroy them, they buy them to develop them, and to profit from doing so. My only issue today between MotoGP and Superbike, and therefore between Dorna and Infront, is that we need to make a set of rules that will allow Dorna to overcome the crisis which MotoGP is experiencing, while maintaining the philosophy of their championship, which by the way is the most exclusive in motorcycle racing. I strongly believe that the values of MotoGP must not be destroyed with an initiative which results in frying up a mixed grill, instead of cooking a gourmet dinner. The inherent value of MotoGP is to be the technical pinnacle of motorcycle racing – and it must remain so. World Superbike is the pinnacle of motorcycle racing for Production bikes, and we want to remain as that. AC: In terms of differentiating the two products then, particularly given the issue of saving costs, is it worth examining what BSB is doing in the UK in 2012, where they're adopting what many consider would be the correct strategy for World Superbike, with a lowerspec, essentially Superstock engine with a control ECU, but more or less the same chassis rules as SBK. This has resulted in packed grids. PF: I have a very clear view of this. First of all, let’s talk about costs. The cost of the materials of the bikes and the spare parts for a World Superbike
team equates to 25% of the budget, so even if you reduce by 40% the cost of the materials, you save 10% overall, which can be €150,000 per rider. OK, fine. We now have to consider various elements: number one, SBK is based on a certain freedom of tuning, the reason for which is very simple, and very important, and in my opinion should never be changed. You have different manufacturers who each have different commercial and manufacturing philosophies. You have some manufacturers who offer a streetbike which costs €30,000 for a customer to buy, and is produced in the minimum 3,000 units needed for homologation – a top range bike with the best suspension, best brakes, etc. And then you have another manufacturer selling a bike that costs € 15,000, which therefore has a
completely different level of technical equipment such as forks, wheels, electronics, etc. and is maybe targeted to sell 20,000 units. If you want to allow all the manufacturers in this sector of the market to participate in SBK with a competitive bike, you need to have some freedom for modification, because otherwise the two types of manufacturers could never compete against each other. As the absence of any Ducatis on the 2012 BSB grids underlines, the more you restrict the tuning possibilities, the more you restrict the number of bikes to be competitive – all the bikes on the BSB grids in 2012 will be in-line fours. In Superstock, you have one year when the Ducatis dominate, then the second year the BMWs dominate, then someone else the third year – why? Because, that depends on the fact that
the bikes that go to market have more performance than others, you can’t change anything, and that bike will win - full stop. We cannot allow that in Superbike. So, this is the reason we strongly believe that a certain degree of freedom in tuning is necessary. Another issue is the control ECU. I dream of having a control ECU in SBK - and by the way, if I could, I would very specifically not give it an advanced specification, in order to have the bikes sliding, moving about under braking and so on, giving the rider much more possibility of demonstrating his skills, and to provide a greater spectacle. But here the problem again is that if we want to maintain a link with the marketplace, I must allow manufacturers to display their technology in a racing context. This means that if BMW, Aprilia or Ducati has a certain electronic setup on its production machine, obviously it wants to use, develop and demonstrate the validity of this electronic setup through racing. If you force them to use something that you provide, you take out one reason for them to participate in the series, and you run the strong risk that their production streetbike will have a superior electronics package to the SBK race version. So this is very much an issue, because obviously in today’s racing biggest problem is electronics. AC: However, given the fact that the economic situation means that sales of Superbikes have slumped around the world, whether because of speed cameras, insurance or the economic situation, is it realistic to maintain the 3,000 unit minimum numbers threshold for production? If you were to reduce this to 1,500 or even 1,000, that would surely bring in other smaller manufacturers like KTM or MV Agusta. PF: This is something we’re discussing, but on that we fully rely on the manufacturers’ position. This means that if the manufacturers ask for a reduction in the quantity, we will be happy to vote in favour of that, and I think also that the FIM will be. But, this is a decision that must really come from them. AC: In 2012 BSB will hold its first race outside the British Isles in Assen, and they're talking about adding the Nürburgring in 2013. Is BSB becoming a rival to SBK? Is Jonathan Palmer - who after all shut SBK out of its former iconic race at Brands Hatch - friend or foe? PF: Jonathan is a friend, we have no problem with what he’s doing. To be sincere, I don’t see any chance for BSB to be a rival to SBK for many >>>

AC: In 2012 you will have the first Russian World Superbike round in Moscow, but still there’s no SBK race in Asia. Do you see this as an issue, and if so, which countries are you considering? PF: We believe a race in Asia is extremely important, whether in India, Malaysia, Indonesia or Korea, and we are working hard to achieve this target. I really hope that in 2013 we can complete the calendar by putting a race in at least one of those countries. AC: But that doesn’t leave room for a race in South America, where Brazil is a huge developing market? PF: Even though I read that MotoGP has signed an agreement with Argentina, I see Brazil as the key market in South America, and
especially in Superbike terms. We have nothing in view at present, but it is definitely a possible area of development. AC: India with its new Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit at Delhi now has the track to host SBK. Unlike China, India essentially has no restrictions on ownership or use of a high performance motorcycle. With such a huge potential market, presumably this must be your key interest in Asia? And what about Japan? PF: For sure India and Indonesia, respectively the second and third largest motorcycle markets in the world, are SBK’s two main targets, and hopefully one of them will join Russia in the calendar soon. In Japan, motorcycle racing no longer has much of a profile, so I don’t think it’s a realistic hope for SBK to be held there in the future. AC: The strength of Superbike has been that it allows manufacturers to demonstrate Paolo Flammini and his brother Maurizio have been running World SBK for 24 of the last 25 years

the quality of their products directly to the consumer. It has a much more accessible paddock than MotoGP. But I remember when SBK used to race at Laguna Seca that you had this outstanding SBK village roadshow which brought people to the teams and manufacturers taking part in the racing, and even companies like Moto Guzzi or Victory were present there, despite not being involved in competition. Why not expand the paddock show idea, and bring to other races? PF: I’m very happy about this question, because this is one of our key projects for the future right now. In 2011 we made a decision to develop the SBK village in the Italian rounds, and organised it to be accessible to everyone who bought a general admission ticket - you don’t need a special pass for this, and it was very successful. We attracted companies like Coca-Cola and American Express, brands that would never normally be involved with Superbike, plus obviously the manufacturers and the aftermarket companies. Now, this is a project that next year will be replicated in Donington, Brno and probably in Aragon, as well as the three Italian rounds again, so now there will be an SBK village in six rounds out of 12 in Europe, so half of them. This is one of the elements we see as having a double function: you improve the added value of the ticket that you sell to a spectator, since you have a ticket to the fair as well as to the race. Plus, you increase the value that you give to the manufacturers and to the aftermarket suppliers, and thirdly, as you said, you start to involve brands that otherwise wouldn’t be there with you, so then they get to know the SBK product, and maybe they’ll convert their participation to a sponsorship, or
even direct involvement on the racetrack. AC: 2012 is the 25th anniversary of World Superbike racing, directed for 24 out of those 25 years by you and your brother Maurizio. How are you going to celebrate this? PF: We have several projects in the planning, including a special book to celebrate the 25 years. We would like to organise some activities in Monza in May, and the budget that’s available will more or less drive the activities which will take place. Our dream would be to bring together all the former World champions to make a special event on the Sunday, where they can get back out on the track on a comparable bike to what they won their title on. AC: One ingredient in SBK during the last 25 years has been the distinctive characters and personalities of the riders involved – from Carl Fogarty to Stephane Mertens, or Frankie Chili to Max Biaggi. How important do you feel this has been in the growth of World Superbike? PF: We’ve had people like Troy Bayliss, Colin Edwards, Carl Fogarty, Giancarlo Falappa, Troy Corser, Scott Russell and many others who were an intrinsic part of the Superbike philosophy, and were in the public’s heart from the very beginning, but then also people like Max Biaggi, who had a totally different approach to the fans before, but after five years in World Superbike, he’s a different person. Max will tell you he’s a different guy now, more relaxed, spending more time with the fans and journalists than he ever did before he came here. And Carlos Checa is another one. Here in SBK I think he found himself in the ideal environment to express his ability. Besides him, I can think of a couple of others who came from MotoGP, and who once they got to World Superbike and appreciated the family atmosphere in the paddock, but the no-holds racing out on the track, they each said “Why didn’t I do this sooner?!” Well, better late than never, I guess! •
The first round of the 2012 World SBK Championship will take place at Phillip Island in Australia on February 26
CATHCART REPORT
Mixed fortunes for Piaggio PIAGGIO’S recent steep drop in sales in in its core home market makes its boss Robert Colaninno’s decision appear all the more farsighted to expand the scooter specialist’s overseas operations by constructing new factories in China and Vietnam respectively the largest and fourth largest PTW markets in the world - with a third now about to open in India, the second largest. At the 11th biennial New Delhi Auto Expo which opened on January 6, Piaggio unveiled the new Vespa LX125 four-stroke scooter developed by the Italian company specifically for manufacture in its freshly built factory in Baramati, 250km from Mumbai and 110km further inland from Pune, the HQ of the Indian motorcycle industry. Manufacture of the new Vespa will commence in March at Baramati, which has the capacity to produce 150,000 units a year, and the new model will be rolled out in April at Piaggio’s dealers in the 35 most important cities in India – it’ll be priced as a premium product in the local marketplace, says Ravi Chopra, Chairman and CEO of Piaggio India. “The Piaggio Group’s arrival in the twowheeled marketplace in India opens up a completely new
premium scooter segment, based on style as well as performance,” he said on unveiling the new model in Delhi. “With Vespa, we can aim to satisfy the wide expectations of customer in this market segment, which has so much potential for future years.” However, Piaggio’s motorcycle brands Aprilia and Moto Guzzi continue to struggle, with just 5,144 bikes of all models carrying these names sold in their Italian home market in 2012, for a paltry combined 6.2% of the marketplace. The Dorsoduro 750 V-twin was Aprilia’s best-selling model, with just 415 bikes sold, while just 228 examples of the muchacclaimed Tuono V4R found Italian buyers in its debut year, placing it at the foot of the list of 100 best-selling models in Italy in 2011. Still, that’s more than its RSV4 sportbike counterpart, which in spite of the supposed feel-good factor coming from Max Biaggi’s World Superbike Championship victory in 2010, sold less than 200 examples in its home market last year. Piaggio’s motorcycle commercial operation is seemingly incapable of marketing such standout products in the manner, and to

the level, that they deserve, as a look at sales of comparable Ducati models will confirm. Or, as is commonly conjectured in Italy of late, perhaps the large-capacity Aprilia streetbikes should all be wearing the Moto Guzzi badge, in keeping with that company’s stellar reputation for leading edge engineering dating from the days of the V8 500GP racer, or its 120º V-twin and lengthways in-line four-cylinder counterparts, or the serial world title-winning GP singles, or any of the iconic Guzzi designs today on view in the factory museum at Mandello del Lario, which were produced before successive owners up to and including Piaggio tried to turn Italy’s most glorious sportbike brand into a Latin equivalent of
Harley-Davidson. Without conspicuous recent success, as Moto Guzzi’s still desperately low total production of around 6,000 bikes in 2011 would confirm, Piaggio boss Roberto Colaninno has nevertheless committed to investing E 40 million in Moto Guzzi over the next five years. This will underwrite development of a range of new models powered by the all-new 1200cc liquidcooled double overhead-cam eight-valve 90º V-twin engine, as well as redeveloping and/or renovating the existing structure of the historic Mandello del Lario factory, to improve efficiency and production capacity. But that still leaves the question of what to do to increase Aprilia’s global sales volume. •
Verlicchi & Grimeca brands saved Horex ON December 16, a sealed bid auction for Italian frame-maker Verlicchi to sell the business as a going concern, saw Asta da Donati srl, based in Vicopisano, near Pisa, another smaller Italian manufacturer of two-wheeled bicycle and motorcycle frames, currently employing 65 workers, acquire Verlicchi for the sum of E 1.6 million. President Mauro Donati has committed as a key element of the purchase to retain Verlicchi’s Bologna
factory, and to provide continued employment for 90 out of the 166 workers over the next three to four years, with the remainder being given state-funded redundancy payments. ''We don’t have Verlicchi’s technical know-how and more sophisticated construction methods,” said Donati’s CEO Giorgio Franceschi, “even if we have a sound business dealing in volume production frames. For this reason we believe that the two companies complement each other
A number of Ducati models had Verlicchi frames, including this 999
perfectly, and together we are stronger than when we were apart.” Another Italian motorcycle-sector company in difficulty, Grimeca, a world leader in pressure-cast aluminium frames, brake components, cast aluminium wheels and hubs for both motorcycle and cycle use, had filed for bankruptcy in April 2010. This was largely as a result of the loss of business when Honda transferred production from Italy to Thailand, and Harley-Davidson closed Buell. TecnoMeccanico Betto/TMB located on the outskirts of Padova and headed by Massimo Betto and his two brothers, beat off a challenge from the Indian firm Ruja to acquire Grimeca for E 24.1 million, including a promise to maintain production at Ceregnano, and to employ 305 of the 778-strong workforce. The company has now resumed its role as a key supplier to the international motorcycle industry, but with greater productivity from the slimmed down staff.•
CLEMENS Neese, the founder of new German muscle bike manufacturer Horex, has now confirmed the first batch of its six-cylinder triple-camshaft 1200cc VR6 Roadster bikes will roll off the production line at its new Augsburg factory this spring. The first examples will be supplied to German dealers as demo models, with customer deliveries then beginning in early summer at a confirmed retail price of E 21,700 in Germany, including 21% local tax. “We want to satisfy initial demand in our home market before thinking about exports,” says Neese. Because of supply-chain problems, Horex will initially introduce a non-supercharged VR6, with the supercharged version to come later in 2012. •

ROAD TRIP
Italian urban apparel and accessories specialist OJ Atmosfere Metropolitane was founded in Milan in June 2001, and celebrated its tenth anniversary at a big club event in Milan last summer, with a catwalk show, presentation of new products, and partying long into the night. IDN visited the company soon after to quiz co-founder Massimiliano Merighi about current and future plans J is the third arm of the Merighi family’s diversified industrial group. The original two companies are BRI Italia, a technical lubricant distributor (which sold Bel-Ray oils on the Italian market from 1974 to 1999, and then Liqui Moly from 1999 to 2010), and ARI Chimica, a sealants and chemicals distributor (which also makes aerosols such as chain sprays for the motorcycle sector). BRI and ARI were originally founded by Renzo Merighi, and OJ by his sons Massimiliano (Max) and Marcello, respectively Sales and Product Managers for the company. Max takes up the story. “The group’s original expertise was on the technical side of motorcycle distribution, but the demise of the two-stroke market was eating into our lubricants business so we looked around for other commercial opportunities. “We thought we would like to continue in the motorcycle industry, but in a different sector,” he says. “We saw a gap in the urban apparel market, which at the time was covered only by Tucano Urbano, and have expanded rapidly over the last ten years, to the extent that we are now the undoubted number two in the urban sector in Italy.”

INTERNATIONAL DEALER NEWS - FEBRUARY 2012
OJ’s turnover was €3 million in 2011, up 20% on the previous year, and that company now employs 6 of the group’s 11 staff full-time, with an office and showroom in Milan and three warehouses outside the city. One factor in the company’s success was the decision to initially target the market with the most promise. “In Italy, the urban market has a potential target population of 50 million, while the motorcycle market is only one million,” says Massimiliano. Another has been customer focus. “Because we are small we can be flexible and move quickly if a client wants something special. In Italy, larger companies demand a big commitment from their customers, and in times like these dealers will often only do a small programme with them because of market uncertainties, and top up with product from us, because we don’t tie them into a big programme.” Other advantages are aggressively-priced but good quality products, and an ever-expanding range. OJ’s main USP here is feature-rich clothing and accessories with emphasis on all-weather protection, rather than the primary focus on fashion seen in the product ranges of some other Italian urban apparel manufacturers.
ROAD TRIP And this pedigree has made the company’s recent transition into touring and adventure/enduro clothing more straightforward, as here too protection and safety have to come first. “By branching out into touring, we want to build a reputation as a provider of proper technical apparel,” says Max. The new Desert enduro jacket and trousers, for example, are half the price of the equivalents made by some of the longer-established apparel companies, and were used with success in the 2011 Paris-Dakar rally. Urban and touring apparel, soft luggage, leg covers, gloves and boots complete the line-up, along with protection up to Level 2. In the winter season 30% of sales are leg covers, compared with 15 to 20% over the whole year. New products unveiled at the EICMA show last November included two urban waterproof jackets, Prince and Princess, a new hi-viz gilet, hand covers, Kevlar fashion jeans at an aggressive price with removable protection, and new boot and shoe styles. “In terms of new product development, we are very fast, with as little as two months between the initial idea and development of the product, another advantage of our small size and ability to move quickly when necessary,” says Max. Most of the company’s ranges are made in China,
OJ’s updated website has extensive product and background details in Italian, English, German and French
with leather gloves from Pakistan and items such as protectors made in Italy. “Marcello is responsible for design and sends his ideas to the Chinese factory, and he will fine-tune it with them. When a final design is agreed, we have a man out there who does quality checks, and we do further checks when it arrives at our warehouse in Italy.” Production in China has advantages and

disadvantages, according to Max. “We have a very low rate of defective products because we only use decent factories with relatively advanced production processes. But in the current market it is very difficult to forecast what the demand for different products will be, because customers will only commit to short-term orders, which makes the ordering process from our Chinese manufacturers difficult. This is even worse for our larger competitors, but also a problem for us. “And every year in China production costs increase, by up to 25%, but you can’t increase your own prices annually, so that too is a problem. In the medium term I see more and more production being repatriated to Europe, to countries like Romania, when production quality has increased there, and to South East Asian countries such as Vietnam and Thailand.” OJ’s major market is Italy, which accounts for 85% of current sales. “Every month I spend some time travelling round the country to talk to dealers,” says Massimiliano. “The Northern market is very different from those in the Centre and the South, and indeed the market is often completely different from region to region within the North or the South. “Our biggest regional markets are Lombardy, Triveneto and Sicily, in that order, the latter perhaps a surprise given its relative poverty, but we have a good agent there and the personal touch is important. I regularly visit dealers there myself and find that if you get inside the circle of confidence you are 100% safe, but if you are outside it’s a different matter.

It has four waterproof pockets and neck, wrist and waist adjustment, with CE protectors on elbows and shoulders, and back padding with a back protector pocket
“Tuscany is a good but declining market, Piedmont quite hard to break into as they tend to prefer doing business with others from their own province, Rome is difficult, as there is enthusiasm for the product but less for meeting payment deadlines, and Naples is something else again. “We have around 700 dealers in Italy, and because of the economic crisis, every one is living day to day and keeping stock levels as low as possible. Unlike France, where there are a few big distribution chains, some with hundreds of dealers, in Italy the market is fragmented between many smaller outlets – the largest Italian chain has eight shops! “The sector is in crisis, and the solution will not be easy. We need to create distribution networks with many shops across the whole country, like in France, to organise the best distribution, production and retail prices.”

But Max is confident that, despite this crisis, the company will continue to prosper on its home market because of the popularity of its offer, and also thinks that now is a good time to expand into export markets. Currently 15% of sales are generated outside Italy, with France, Spain and Brazil the most important markets, and a growing presence selling leg covers in Japan, Thailand and Korea. OJ is particularly looking for partners in Germany, the UK and Eastern Europe. “Germany is a difficult market to get into if you are not well known,” says Max. “The Louis chain, for example, buys only special items from us, such as our helmet hanger lock. For most of the items in our catalogue they already have 50 suppliers. “We also have a small presence in the UK, where a specialist distributor sells our touring and enduro clothing, but we would like to hear from other potential importers who want to sell our other wellpriced but distinctive products. “In France we are expanding from a small base, and want to increase the rate of expansion. In Spain, we were doing well until the crash in the market, and

hope to re-establish our position when the economy recovers.” OJ Atmosfere Metropolitane has many challenges to face if it is to fulfil the ambitions of its founders, but the fact that it has been able to expand in the current difficult economic climate, when many others are struggling, shows its foundations are firm. It has come a long way in ten years. “Every season the range of products offered, the quality and the distribution has improved, and our aggressive prices and speed of reaction to customer needs has made us many friends in the market. Our brand is becoming much better known, and we would welcome enquiries from any dealers and distributors who want to share in our success,” Max concludes. During an impact, D3O material locks together to absorb impact energy, before instantly returning to its flexible state. D3O does not go hard when hit, but when locked it absorbs and spreads the force, significantly reducing the effect of impact and shock. The company says its unique characteristics make for a completely flexible and comfortable material, whilst offering total shock absorption and impact protection. These features mean the material can be moulded into threedimensional shapes to create bespoke protective solutions, and integrated seamlessly into garments and products. The new CE standard has two

performance levels. Level 1 pass is <35kN of transmitted force in all tests claimed; whilst level 2 pass is <20kN transmitted force in all tests claimed. As well as a mandatory ‘wet’ test, both levels now have option ‘hot’ (40°c) and ‘cold’ (-10°c) tests. Standards are periodically reviewed and the changes are intended to give users better protection. Mostyn Thomas, Marketing Director, D3O said “We are proud to bring a range of products to the market that now not only meets the new standard,
but exceeds it at all test conditions. Xergo has been designed to provide the ultimate protective offering in the motorcycle market. Protection was our number one priority in designing this range and our focus has been on passing all test conditions in the largest surface area”. NEWS Big Bike Europe to host DESK European Championship London mayor Boris Johnson has confirmed that motorcyclists will be able to use bus lanes in central London, following an 18month pilot scheme which concluded the measure would have a positive effect on congestion and pollution. Polaris Industries has acquired Goupil Industrie, a French maker of electric lightweight commercial vehicles with $25 million sales in 2010. This follows the takeover of Global Electric Motorcars (GEM) by Polaris in 2011. Suzuki’s Indian subsidiary will invest 1 billion rupees ($18 million) to expand its capacity to produce 540,000 units by the end of 2013, an increase from the 360,000 motorcycles produced now. Yamaha has also announced Indian expansion plans, and will invest 8 billion rupees ($151 million) to raise its motorcycle and scooter output from 330,000 units to 1 million units. The number of fatal road accidents in Ireland fell to 186 in 2011, the lowest since records began. Since the Irish government started its accident prevention campaign in 2007, the mortality rate on Irish roads has dropped 50%. Of the 186 people killed in 2011, 105 were in cars, 45 pedestrians, 17 motorcyclists and 9 cyclists.

BMW Motorrad sees record year in 2011 BMW Motorrad delivered 104,286 motorcycles worldwide in 2011, up 6.4% on the figure for 2010, and more than at any other time in the division’s nearly 90-year history, Worldwide market share increased to 13% in the above 500cc category, compared to 7% in 2007. BMW is now the best-selling motorcycle brand in 12 different countries, including Italy where it sold more than 50% more motorcycles in 2011 than its closest Italian competitor, Ducati. In its German home market it is not only No.1, with a 25% market share, but also sold more bikes last year than all its European competitors combined. With its two new maxi-scooter
models launched at EICMA last November about to enter production in the next couple of months, the German company will enter an entirely new model sector, making further growth likely in the immediate future.
VIP party and first annual International Motorcycle Industry Awards will be held in Essen after the International Custom Conference on the evening of Friday May 10, 2013. The entry form and class definitions (FreeStyle, Modified Harley, Production and Performance Custom) are available online at: www.amdchampionship.com /eurochamps
Its Husqvarna subsidiary saw a fall in sales, however, down 23% to 9,286 over the year, due mainly to close competition from a rapidly-recovering KTM. Overall, the BMW Group finished 2011 with the best sales results ever, as worldwide sales of BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce vehicles increased 14.2% over 2010 to nearly 1.7 million units. www.bmw-motorrad.com
