I

f in 1879, when A stormy night premiered, an outraged columnist accused Caragiale that he “denounces our little miseries to foreigners”, today, in 2010, the validity of morals or character seems unlimited. The director Alexandru Dabija, the scenographer Dragoş Buhagiar and the actors Petronela Grigorescu, Haruna Condurache, Călin Chirilă, Florin Mircea, Cosmin Maxim, Dumitru Năstruşnicu and Doru Aftanasiu create Caragiale’s universe in a show without clichés and prejudices. We are being invaded by

Caragiale’s attitude, “the great vital frenzy” of its characters, the healthy laughter, in a special mechanical stage assembly where ingenuity and comic identity is real. The performance marks the anniversary of 170 years from the delivery of the first shows under a single national administration, now regarded as the birth of the Iasi National Theatre.
