First step: Decide to hitchhike to Stará Ľubovňa. Second step: Decide to hitchhike back from Stará Ľubovňa. Third step: Being unable to find a car, decide to come back by taxi.
August, Saturday 10th, 7.10pm, petrol station, Stará Ľubovňa, Slovakia. The taxi is an old dark blue VW transporter, Seydou is sitting in the front, Nils and I in the back. The old grey haired driver looks nice at first sight. We start and the first thing he asks is: - Americans? - Nie, francúzsky - « Bordel? », making some gestures with his fingers to help us understand. The agreed fare was 4€ at the start. Two minutes later it went up to 8. Seydou managed to negotiate. Meanwhile the driver was distracted, inventing curves on the straight parts of the road. We soon realized that he was driving as well as a giraffe with boxing gloves. Every time he glanced at Seydou, the car swerved left or right. We begged Seydou to stop talking to him. Nils and I exchanged expressive looks, meaning « we are too young to die ». We then overtook a car just as one in front was dashing towards us. I still seriously wonder how the crash was avoided. At this moment the old bloke understood that we were not confident at all about the whole situation, and more precisely about him. He exclaimed : - « Schumacher! » And Seydou added: - It’s ok friends, i already had a crash with such a car, it’s solid. So basically, we were driven by Schumacher and even in case something happened there was no real risk because of this type of car. We were reassured. Indeed ! The worst came when he undertook to pass two cars; one was pulling a trailer, running over 100km/h, in a curve and reaching the top of a hill. Had we met a car front of us we would not have avoided it. The tires kept screeching in the bends. Anyway, I still can’t grasp how we managed to arrive in Plaveč, safe and sound, at 7.25pm, in due time for dinner.
