Support the Y and make a difference

Dear Friends, I began my work as the President and CEO of the Door County YMCA earlier this year, and I wanted to make certain I reached out to you very early in my work to introduce myself to you. While I am new to this position, my wife Penny and I are not strangers to Door County or the YMCA. We have owned property in Door County for 16 years and now live west of Carlsville. My work career has been divided between positions with the YMCA in the Midwest and running our family’s chocolate and candy business in Manitowoc. During my retail career I was always involved in the Y as a volunteer and had the privilege of serving as the Chairman of the Board for the YMCA of the USA from 2001 through 2003. My conviction and affection for the YMCA is founded in the belief that our work at the Y is about changing lives in very positive ways. The need for organizations which instill values in youth today so they make better decisions tomorrow cannot be understated. The importance of encouraging healthy lifestyles has never been more important. Everyday at the Y we are working to lift the self esteem of folks who cross our door steps. And the way we do these things is by putting heroes in the live of kids and families everyday. And at the Y we welcome everyone and raise funds each year to honor that promise. In a paragraph, that is why I have committed so much time and energy in advocating for the YMCA over these many years. I feel honored and privileged to have been selected as the President and CEO of the Door County Y. I look forward to meeting you sometime soon. Should our paths not cross, please call or stop and ask for me. I will welcome the opportunity to visit with you. Best wishes to you and family for a New Year filled with happiness and good health. Sincerely,

Tom Beerntsen, President and CEO Before joining the YMCA staff in Door County, Tom served as the first Executive Director of the Wood Family Foundation in Chicago, a foundation established by retired Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood. Previous to his work with the Wood Family Foundation, he was Executive Vice President for the Association Development with the YMCA of Metropolitan Chicago. Tom owned and operated a family confectionery business in Manitowoc from 1983 to 2003. His family had operated the business since 1932. Prior to his work in Manitowoc, he served as a professional YMCA director in Iowa, South Dakota and Minnesota. Beerntsen attended college in Downers Grove at George Williams College and graduated in 1971 with a Bachelors Degree in Applied Behavioral Sciences. Tom has been actively involved in local voluntary service. In Manitowoc, he served on the boards of the Civic Center, Maritime Museum, United Way, Silver Lake College and the YMCA. He and his wife Penny started a scholarship program in 1992 through the YMCA, in memory of his Mom and Dad. Scholarships continue to be awarded to students pursuing degrees in human service fields of study. Tom has a continuous record of involvement with the YMCA as a volunteer at every level of the national organization, and from 2001 - 2003, served as Chairman of the Board of the YMCA of the USA. During his years as an officer of the YMCA of the USA Board of Directors, he traveled up to 100 days per year and served as the primary volunteer ambassador worldwide for the YMCA of the USA. Tom and his wife, Penny, have two children. JulIe, her husband and two daughters, Chloe and Ruby live in Baltimore. Mike lives in Colorado and works full time with Students Shoulder To Shoulder international service trip not-for-profit for high school students. Penny is a speaker and advocate on criminal justice issues and restorative justice. 2

The Y. So Much More™

When your donation goes to support the Y, it means so much. That’s because Y-M-C-A means so much more than a gym...it’s a cause. The Y is a charity, dedicated to youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. For many years, we’ve been proud to help our neighbors learn, grow and thrive. With programs from A to Z - like athletics to advocacy, dance classes to disease prevention, volleyball to volunteerism, to Zumba - we don’t just strengthen individuals, we strengthen an entire community. Where others see obstacles, we see opportunities for our members, volunteers, staff, and generous donors like you, to make a difference.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED One of the better-known benefits of volunteering is the impact on the community. Volunteers are often the glue that holds a community together. Volunteering allows you to connect to your community, make new friends and make it a better place. However, volunteering is a two-way street, and it can benefit you and your family as much as the cause you choose to help. Volunteering also strengthens your ties to the community and broadens your support network, exposing you to people with common interests, neighborhood resources, and fun and fulfilling activities. SUPER KIDS FUN NIGHTS • 3rd Friday of every month • Contact Dori (see page 15) BLOSSOM RUN • Saturday, May 10 • Contact Mary Claire (see page 22 ) HEALTHY KIDS DAY • April 26 • Contact Julie W (see page 12 ) Contact the YMCA for more information on other volunteer opportunities!

During this class you will practice using your mind, voice, body and allies to help you live your life more confidently. Boundary setting, role playing, striking, stomping and finding your voice are a few of the options you will play with. Together will identify resources in our community that can help support us. This program empowers the participants to improve their health and quality of life while diminishing the adverse affects of cancer or various cancer treatments. Each 12-week session is comprised of classes that meet for 75 minutes, two times per week. All program participants receive a FREE family Y membership for the session’s duration, with options to extend membership beyond the end of the program cycle. • Builds muscle mass and strength • Increases flexibility and endurance • Develops a fitness plan to continue practicing a healthy lifestyle

Program Leadership:

The primary goal of our instructors/trainers is to provide a supportive environment for class participants. Our Y staff is trained and responsive to the changing variety of emotional and physical concerns that cancer survivors face. Each member of our staff team is a Y personal coach and certified in the Stanford University’s “Living Strong, Living Well” program, which includes training in the elements of cancer, post-cancer exercise, nutrition and supportive cancer care. What participants are saying about LIVESTRONG™ at the YMCA:

“This program has helped me a great deal. My stamina is better - I notice it every day. Everything I do is a little easier because I’m getting stronger.” “I want to continue as a member of the Y because they have helped me build up my confidence again after surviving cancer.”

Criteria for Class Participation:

This course of instruction is recommended for anyone who has finished cancer treatment; participation by those in treatment will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Express interest by phone, in person at the Y, or by email at livestrong@doorcountyymca.org.

• • • •

Enroll in the FREE program by visiting with Christine Webb-Miller at the Y in Sturgeon Bay. Commit to attending 80% of the classes during the 12-week program. EXERCISING WITH PARKINSON DISEASE & PARKINSON RELATED SYNDROMES

An exercise group geared toward individuals with Parkinson Disease (PD) and Parkinson Related Syndromes (PRS) may be just what you are looking for! These exercise groups are designed and led by a physical therapist with experience working with individuals that have PD or PRS. The hour long class is split into half-hour sessions. The first 30 minutes will be spent on stretching with a focus on trunk mobility. During the other 30 minutes, participants will walk on a treadmill. The theory behind this program is that improved trunk mobility combined with an aerobic conditioning program should lead to improvement or maintenance of functional activities used in everyday life. New participants are always welcome. Wear comfortable clothes, athletic shoes and bring a water bottle to class. If you have any questions please call Carl (PT), or Shawn (PTA), at Ministry Door County Medical Center Rehab Services (920) 746-0410. A physical therapist evaluation is required prior to registration (in most cases this evaluation is covered by Medicare or insurance). Contact Ministry Door County Medical Center Rehab Services for information (920) 746-0410.

The Y. So Much More™

When your donation goes to support the Y, it means so much. That’s because Y-M-C-A is so much more than a gym...it’s a cause. The Y. So Much More™ When your donation goes to support the Y, it means so much.

Class is held at the YMCA Northern Door Program Center, and Carol Ash is the physical therapist who leads the class. (Sturgeon Bay) Do you have an opinion? Let it be heard! Meet and interact with teens from across the state. Study the law-making process. Debate issues and take over the Capitol for an entire weekend! The purpose of the program is to bring the workings of state government alive to students. It creates an opportunity for students to discuss current state issues with state administrators, elected officials, and students from high schools and YMCA’s throughout the state. Each conference is led by teens elected to office by their fellow delegates. Each state provides facilities and volunteers from various state departments who act as resources for the students while they debate the issues. The volunteers help guide the students through mock committee meetings. Students debate and vote on the bills that their fellow delegates have written and presented. Bills that pass in committee are then taken to the floor of the House or Senate for full debate and vote. TEENS.........remember you can participate in most adult health enhancement programs starting at age13!
