Y STAFF LOVE WORKING AT THE Y BECAUSE...

“Some jobs, the alarm goes off in the morning and it’s easy to hit the snooze button and say, “I wish I didn’t have to go to work today.” At the Y, that is not the case! The people and the relationships that I have made at the Y is why I like to be part of this great organization!”

“...Because of all the great people and it keeps me active!” “...my passion is kids and there are a lot of smiley little ones to keep happy at the Y.” “...I appreciate the positive atmosphere” “...It is a wonderful place to meet new and past acquaintances to talk to them about their involvement in the Door County community. I see first hand how important it is to keep moving no matter what age we are.” “...as a staff, we're more than just co-workers; we are friends!” “...of all of the diverse individuals you encounter everyday!” “... of the positive impact it has on the people of all ages of our community!!” “... it is really fun to help people move in a positive direction for their health!” “...it is empowering to inspire others to get their bodies moving and make them sweat...they are so happy at the end of class to be so fatigued!” “...No one cares how gray your hair is or how challenging one finds a class, there is a sense of community and support.” “...I get to see people of all ages get healthier, smile at each other and move at their own pace!” “I feel valued and respected by my peers and students.”

Join the Door County YMCA team. Feel the rewards.

“...there is such an energy that surrounds the Y. People are excited to come to the Y because they’ll be exposed to positive influences such as friendly and knowledge staff, great programs and facilities, and the support of others just like them. It is truly rewarding!”

VOLUN TEERS NEEDED

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED One of the better-known benefits of volunteering is the impact on the community. Volunteers are often the glue that holds a community together. Volunteering allows you to connect to your community, make new friends and make it a better place. However, volunteering is a two-way street, and it can benefit you and your family as much as the cause you choose to help. Volunteering also strengthens your ties to the community and broadens your support network, exposing you to people with common interests, neighborhood resources, and fun and fulfilling activities. 5 STAR SUCCESS!

YMCA Barker Center First 5-Star Center in Door County!

Having quality childcare available makes a big difference for families and the community at large. For this reason, the YMCA’s mission is to provide the highest quality care at the YMCA Barker Child Development Center. The Y is thrilled to announce that the Barker Center has received the highest possible rating in the Young Star Rating Program: 5 out of 5 stars! The YMCA Barker Center is the only 5 star facility in the County, among only 325 statewide.

Young Star rates childcare providers based on education, learning environment, business practices, and the health and well-being of children. Regulated Wisconsin childcare providers are evaluated annually and given a rating from 1 to 5 stars, with 5 stars being the highest rating. 15

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT ROTARY INTERACT • Grades 9 through 12

The Door County Rotary Interact Club prides themselves on volunteering at various events during the year. Participants learn the importance of and develop leadership skills and respect for others, along with the responsibility of giving rather than receiving. If you have questions about becoming a Rotary Interact Club member, call Arnie Neubauer at the YMCA (743-4949), or email Arnie at aneubauer@doorcountyymca.org • Rotary Interact meets on Wednesday evenings at 5:45 pm

YOUTH IN GOVERNMENT • Grades 7 through 12 RAISE YOUR VOICE Do you have an opinion? Let it be heard! Meet and interact with teens from across the state. Study the law-making process. Debate issues and take over the Capitol for an entire weekend! The purpose of the program is to bring the workings of state government alive to students. It creates an opportunity for students to discuss current state issues with state administrators, elected officials, and students from high schools and YMCA’s throughout the state. Each conference is led by teens elected to office by their fellow delegates. Each state provides facilities and volunteers from various state departments who act as resources for the students while they debate the issues. The volunteers help guide the students through mock committee meetings. Students debate and vote on the bills that their fellow delegates have written and presented. Bills that pass in committee are then taken to the floor of the House or Senate for full debate and vote. • YIG meets on Mondays from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm

EXERCISING WITH PARKINSON DISEASE & PARKINSON RELATED SYNDROMES

An exercise group geared toward individuals with Parkinson Disease (PD) and Parkinson Related Syndromes (PRS) may be just what you are looking for! These exercise groups are designed and led by a physical therapist with experience working with individuals that have PD or PRS. The hour long class is split into half-hour sessions. The first 30 minutes will be spent on stretching with a focus on trunk mobility. During the other 30 minutes, participants will walk on a treadmill. The theory behind this program is that improved trunk mobility combined with an aerobic conditioning program should lead to improvement or maintenance of functional activities used in everyday life. New participants are always welcome. Wear comfortable clothes, athletic shoes and bring a water bottle to class. If you have any questions please call Carl (PT), or Shawn (PTA), at Ministry Door County Medical Center Rehab Services (920) 746-0410. A physical therapist evaluation is required prior to registration (in most cases this evaluation is covered by Medicare or insurance). Contact Ministry Door County Medical Center Rehab Services for information (920) 746-0410.

Classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:15 pm to 3:15 pm November 5 through November 26 (no class November 28) December 3 through December 31 (no class December 24)

LIVESTRONG™ at the YMCA is a small-group exercise and movement program for the adult cancer survivor. This program empowers the participants to improve their health and quality of life while diminishing the adverse affects of cancer or various cancer treatments. Each 12-week session is comprised of classes that meet for 75 minutes, two times per week. All program participants receive a FREE family Y membership for the session’s duration, with options to extend membership beyond the end of the program cycle. Class size is limited and pre-registration is required. LIVESTRONG™ at the YMCA

• Improves energy levels and fitness capacity • Enhances attitude and overall self-esteem • Improves stamina for everyday tasks • Builds supportive relationships in a comfortable setting

• Builds muscle mass and strength • Increases flexibility and endurance • Develops a fitness plan to continue practicing a healthy lifestyle

Program Leadership:

The primary goal of our instructors/trainers is to provide a supportive environment for class participants. Our Y staff is trained and responsive to the changing variety of emotional and physical concerns that cancer survivors face. Each member of our staff team is a Y personal coach and certified in the Stanford University’s “Living Strong, Living Well” program, which includes training in the elements of cancer, post-cancer exercise, nutrition and supportive cancer care. What participants are saying about LIVESTRONG™ at the YMCA:

“This program has helped me a great deal. My stamina is better - I notice it every day. Everything I do is a little easier because I’m getting stronger.” “I want to continue as a member of the Y because they have helped me build up my confidence again after surviving cancer.”

Criteria for Class Participation:

This course of instruction is recommended for anyone who has finished cancer treatment; participation by those in treatment will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Express interest by phone, in person at the Y, or by email at livestrong@doorcountyymca.org.

• • • •

Enroll in the FREE program by visiting with Christine Webb-Miller at the Y in Sturgeon Bay. Commit to attending 80% of the classes during the 12-week program. PARKINSON EXERCISE • In Northern Door EXERCISING WITH PARKINSON DISEASE & PARKINSON RELATED SYNDROMES

An exercise group geared towards individuals with Parkinson Disease (PD) and Parkinson Related Syndromes (PRS) may be just what you are looking for! These exercise groups are designed and led by a physical therapist with experience working with individuals with PD or PRS.

Thirty minutes will be spent on stretching, with a focus on trunk mobility. The other thirty minutes, participants will walk on a treadmill. The theory behind this program is that improved trunk mobility combined with an aerobic conditioning program should lead to improvement or maintenance of functional activities used in everyday life. New participants are always welcome. Please set up an initial evaluation with Carl, PT, or Shawn, PTA, at Ministry Door County Medical Center Rehab Services (920) 746-0410. Class is held at the YMCA Northern Door Program Center, and Carol Ash is the physical therapist who leads the class. A physical therapist evaluation is required prior to registration (in most cases this evaluation is covered by Medicare or insurance). Contact Ministry Door County Medical Center Rehab Services for information (920) 746-0410.

Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30 am to 11:30 am November 5 through November 26 (no class November 28) December 3 through December 31 (no class December 24) COST PER MONTH: Members $45.00 • General Public $70.00 The YMCA has financial assistance available; please ask us for more information about our financially based Income Based Pricing.

Facility Age Guidelines

The following general guidelines apply to all youth who are not participating in a supervised, structured program while in the facility (“supervising individuals” are defined as persons 14 years or older).

• Youth ages 7 and under must have direct supervision at all times, except when the child is participating in a class. If using the pool, an adult must accompany the child in the water. Child care is available for infants through age 7; older children may also “help out” in child care. • In most cases, youth ages 8 and 9 must be accompanied by a supervising individual who remains on-site; parents may leave a youth age 8 or 9 at the YMCA for a visit up to 90 minutes (parents must sign child in at the desk and leave a contact cellphone number). The supervising individual does not have to be in the same area as the youth. The youth may move between program areas if required and follow the age restrictions posted for specific rooms and activities.

Lifestyle Center/Aerobic Equipment

• Ages 18 & older (orientation/training optional) • Youth YMCA members, ages 12 through 17, may use the equipment upon completion of orientation with Y staff.

Prime Time Center

• The Prime Time Center is open for family use (children 17 and under). All children must be directly supervised by an adult. Gymnastics equipment (including spring boards and large crash mat) are for use ONLY in gymnastics class.

Pool

• All children ages 9 and under must be accompanied in the pool by an adult. • All youth are subject to swim testing and applicable restrictions based on swimming ability which may include an adult accompanying the child in the water.

Free Weight Equipment

• Ages 13 & under not permitted in the Free Weight Room.

Whirlpool/Sauna

• Ages 13 & under not allowed in the whirlpool/sauna facilities.

Locker/Shower Facilities

Youth age 3 and under may use the opposite sex youth locker if accompanied by a supervising individual. Children 4 years and older must use the same gender locker room and showers or the family locker rooms. Youth ages 15 and under must use the youth locker rooms.

Exercise Classes

Youth age 13 and up may participate in class unless a specific age limit is in place for that specific class. Contact the Healthy Living Director to discuss any exceptions.

Track

Youth age 11 and up may use the indoor track unsupervised. Children ages 9 and 10 may use the indoor track when directly accompanied by a supervising adult. Children ages 8 and under may use the track during designated family friendly times.
