WELLESLEY ONLINE LENT TERM 2021

WELLESLEY ONLINE LENT TERM 2021

Wellesley Online I hope that you are safe and well, although we are aware of the many challenges that families currently face. We are committed to providing as much stability and continuity for your children throughout this period of “lockdown”. Whilst we cannot physically “re-open the school”, we will ensure continuity of your child’s education through “Wellesley Online”, our remote teaching and learning programme. Our teachers have been working throughout the New Year to build on the success of last Summer’s Wellesley Online and have made tweaks to fine tune and refine our remote learning provision to ensure the best possible programme, whilst also understanding the challenges that come with virtual learning. Aside from a clear focus on core academic areas, we will continue to place real emphasis on the wider co-curricular activities which are possible online, as well as the very important pastoral, tutorial and wellbeing slots.

WELLESLEY ONLINE LENT TERM 2021

Structure of the Day In order to provide as much routine as possible, the pupils will follow an adapted timetable in line with the current Wellesley curriculum - with special tweaks and adjustments made to ensure sufficient breaks and time away from their desks. However, we are aware that a set timetable may pose challenges to certain families. Therefore, the teaching and learning activities that our staff are providing can be completed at a time that is convenient for that family and do not have to be completed at the stated time in the timetable. Within this time, there is ample opportunity for regular breaks, activity and fresh air, so it absolutely will not be 8 hours sitting in front of a screen. Whilst we recommend, where possible, the pupils follow the suggested timetable, our staff will be as flexible and adaptable as possible to help pupils for whom there are significant challenges.

WELLESLEY ONLINE LENT TERM 2021

Teaching & Learning Lessons will be a mixture of live sessions, pre-recorded lessons, and assigned activities, and will be posted on the pupil’s google classroom page. The teachers will be available during this time to answer any issues that children may have via Google Meet or by email. Our experience of Wellesley Online last year, and the feedback that we have received from parents, pupils, and teachers, tells us that utilising a variety of approaches leads to the most productive and beneficial offering for our pupils. We intend to hold remote teacher : parent meetings this term for Blocks 1, 2 and 3. Block 4 and JL meetings will take place in the Summer term. Further information will follow.

WELLESLEY ONLINE LENT TERM 2021

Exams Common Entrance and Mock Exams As far as we know at present, the ISEB are still offering Common Entrance as planned and it is our intention for all of our CE candidates to sit these exams as planned in June. We intend to provide mock CE / scholarship exams for our pupils as per our internal calendar in the week beginning March 1st. We will update families as we hear further information. Scholarship For candidates who are expecting to sit scholarship papers to their senior schools we will be liaising with those schools and will advise parents of the situation as soon as possible. Internal Exams As it stands, end of year internal exams for JL, Blocks 4, 3 and 2 will take place in the second half of the summer term. Pupils will be prepared accordingly by their teachers. If this is to change, we will keep you updated.

WELLESLEY ONLINE LENT TERM 2021

Senior Schools The Headmaster will be available for individual video / telephone conversations with parents with regards to senior schools as normal. Please arrange these through Mrs Baird. As it stands, senior schools’ admissions processes are going ahead in an adapted form and middle and senior school pupils will continue to be prepared through interview practice and any other necessary means for their chosen senior schools. Middle school parents are encouraged to keep an open dialogue with us through Mrs Sabin-Dawson and the Headmaster. Interview practice will be arranged where necessary through Mrs Baird.

WELLESLEY ONLINE LENT TERM 2021

Co-Curricular We are determined to make this phase of remote teaching and learning as engaging, stimulating and fulfilling as is possible for our pupils and staff. As such, there will be considerable cocurricular opportunities for our pupils provided for by our specialist staff. Our staff have also been preparing a variety of activities that pupils can sign up for during our usual Tuesday and Friday activities sessions. These will include Chess, Cooking, Art extension, Cross-stitching, Party games, Shakespeare Club and more. As usual at Wellesley there is an enormous amount going on that the pupils will be able to take advantage of. We will be strongly urging pupils to engage in our activity / games slot that is timetabled each afternoon for their own enjoyment and wellbeing.

WELLESLEY ONLINE LENT TERM 2021

Pastoral Care As is the norm, your child’s tutor will be the first port of call and will “meet” regularly with your child. Our aim is to support and encourage the pupils as much as is possible during this remote learning phase. Feedback for academic work and other tasks will continue as normal via the teachers, thus providing the opportunity for a sense of achievement for the pupils. Tutors will facilitate the opportunity for friends to “meet” each other at various times in the week. Pupils will be reminded of the behaviour expectations and our behavioural code of conduct when communicating with each other. There will be a dedicated slot each day for tutorial support - this may involve 1:1 discussion between tutee and tutor or group meetings. This will be an important opportunity for open twoway dialogue between tutors and pupils.

We have produced a “Wellesley Online Guidance for Pupils” document that clearly sets out our expectations of the pupils.

WELLESLEY ONLINE LENT TERM 2021

A Sense of Achievement We will be seeking regular feedback from tutors and teachers with regards to the efforts and engagement of pupils that can be acknowledged “at school in some form. Furthermore, teachers will be monitoring academic progress and attainment in the usual ways.

WELLESLEY ONLINE LENT TERM 2021

Safeguarding & Wellbeing It is extremely important that Wellesley House continues to provide a safe environment, including online for our pupils and staff. We have produced an update to our safeguarding policy that explains our approach to safeguarding in a remote teaching and learning environment, and that offers you further guidance and some resources to refer to should you need any further help. A reminder that Mr Spencer and Mrs Brown are our Designated Safeguard Leads. Whilst drawing up the pupils’ timetables we have had in mind the amount of screen time that the children will be exposed to. We will continue to reinforce, through our PSHE, sport, creative arts and wellbeing programmes, the need to have a balanced and healthy lifestyle whilst learning from home.

WELLESLEY ONLINE LENT TERM 2021

How can Parents Support? On Wednesday 13th January, our teachers will be providing the opportunity for parents to engage in a live 1:1 video call with your child’s tutor (via your child’s google meet platform) during which you can ask any questions and share your thoughts on how best to support your child’s needs at this time. If you are in the pre-prep and would like to arrange a video call, please liaise with Mrs Brown. If you are in JL or above and would like to arrange a video call, please liaise with Mrs Baird. We encourage you to take up this offer as our staff want to help as much as we can. Within this programme, there is a natural opportunity for our pupils to demonstrate (and learn) independence. This is something that is embedded in our DNA here at Wellesley and never will there be a better opportunity for our pupils to put this life skill into practice, albeit within the supportive environment that our teachers will provide.

WELLESLEY ONLINE LENT TERM 2021

Feedback Whilst we have all learned significantly from the first lockdown, clearly, this will continue to be a learning journey for us all and we would welcome feedback that takes into account the (individual and collective) constraints that we are working under. To gain an early insight of how well the programme is working, and to identify any potential issues, we will be inviting parents and pupils to complete an online survey on Friday 22nd January. This will be emailed to you, please do use this to highlight any concerns - we thank you for your feedback. Following this we will continue to offer the opportunity, on a regular basis, to feedback to us about the programme.

WELLESLEY ONLINE LENT TERM 2021

Teamwork We are under no illusion as to how challenging this time is for all of our families and our team of staff will be doing all that we can to support, motivate and inspire our pupils. If you have any questions or feedback, please do not hesitate to contact us. Our form tutors will be available on the day before term starts for a pre-arranged parental meeting if required and requested and Mr Martin, Head of ICT, will be available throughout the working days to help parents and pupils with specific ICT issues.
