What Is Ag Day? It's a day to recognize and celebrate the abundance provided by agriculture. Every year, producers, agricultural associations, corporations, universities, government agencies and countless others across America join together to recognize the contributions of agriculture. When Is Ag Day? Ag Day will be celebrated on March 19, 2013. National Ag Day falls during National Ag Week, March 17-23, 2013. Who Hosts Ag Day? The Agriculture Council of America hosts the campaign on a national level. However, the awareness efforts in communities across America are as influential - if not more - than the broad-scale effort. Again this year, the Ag Day Planning Guide has been created to help communities and organizations more effectively host Ag Day events. What Is Ag Day All About? Ag Day is about recognizing - and celebrating - the contribution of agriculture in our everyday lives. The National Ag Day program encourages every American to: • Understand how food and fiber products are produced. • Value the essential role of agriculture in maintaining a strong economy. • Appreciate the role agriculture plays in providing safe, abundant and affordable products. Why Celebrate Agriculture? Agriculture provides almost everything we eat, use and wear on a daily basis. But too few people truly understand this contribution. This is particularly the case in our schools, where students may only be exposed to agriculture if they enroll in related vocational training. By building awareness, the Agriculture Council of America is encouraging young people to consider career opportunities in agriculture. Each American farmer feeds more than 144 people ... a dramatic increase from 25 people in the 1960s. Quite simply, American agriculture is doing more - and doing it better. As the world population soars, there is an even greater demand for the food and fiber produced in the United States. What Can I Do to Help? Put simply, get involved! Your participation in Ag Day is critical in helping us spread this positive message about agriculture. If you are interested in planning an event, download your Planning Guide today. Of course, there are other ways you can lend your support, including sending a letter to your local newspaper, calling your Congressional representatives or simply sharing information about agriculture with youngsters in your community.

U.S. FARM FACTS • To keep up with population growth more food will have to be produced in the next 50 years as the past 10,000 years combined. • Today, the average U.S. farmer feeds 155 people. In 1960, a farmer fed just 26 people. • Today’s farmer grows twice as much food as his parents did – using less land, energy, water and fewer emissions. • American farmers ship more than $100 billion of their crops and products to many nations. • U.S. farmers produce about 40 percent of the world's corn, using only 20 percent of the total area harvested in the world. • Farmers are a direct lifeline to more than 23 million U.S. jobs in all kinds of industries.

U.S. CORN FACTS

MINNESOTA AGRICULTURE FEEDS THE WORLD Congratulations!

Senator David Senjem AT THE CAPITOL: Toll Free 888-509-1290 sen.david.senjem@senate.mn

• One bushel of corn is 56 pounds. That means U.S. farmers produce an average of more than 9,000 pounds of corn per acre. • The U.S. produces about 40 percent of the world's corn – using only 20 percent of the total area harvested in the world. • Corn farmers have reduced total fertilizer use by 10 percent since 1980. • According to the USDA, one acre of corn removes about 8 tons of carbon dioxide from the air in a growing season. • American farmers produced the five largest corn crops in history during the past five years. Even after supplying foodmakers, ranchers, ethanol producers and grain exporters, America will again be able to save 10 percent of this year’s harvest for the future. • The yield per acre has skyrocketed from 24 bushels in 1931 to 154 now, or a six-fold gain.

This K-M farmer was plowing the first week of December north of Mantorville just off of County #9. There was no frost or snow in this field. Even though crops here did receive enough moisture to harvest excellent crops the soil was very dry when they were picking and even when they plowed up until the second week in December.

U.S. SOYBEAN FACTS

• Farmers in more than 30 U.S. states grow soybeans, making soybeans the country’s second-largest crop in cash sales and the number one value crop export. • In 2008, soybeans represented 56 percent of world oilseed production, and 33 percent of those soybeans were produced by the American farmer. • The U.S. exported 1.16 billion bushels (31.6 million metric tons) of soybeans in 2008, which accounted for 40 percent of the world's soybean trade. • A 60-pound bushel of soybeans yields about 48 pounds of protein-rich meal and 11 pounds of oil. • One and a half gallons of biodiesel and 48 pounds of soybean meal can be produced from one bushel of soybeans.

Deanna Kvam, Jesse Phelps and Erin Maroo, The Hair Barn

Check out the vibe! Main Street Dodge Center has something new to offer in the way of hair care. The familiar Deanna Kay's Hairstyling has been undergoing a transformation for the past few months. Business owner Deanna Kvam received grant money for building upgrades and updates. Last fall barn board from her father's farm found a new home in the salon prompting a name change to "The Hair Barn". This only made sense given Deanna's love of horses. The addition of two booth renters, Jesse Phelps in September 2012, and Erin (Kispert) Maroo in January 2013, has brought a new creative energy to the business. Starting in 1979 Deanna thing to do", smiles Deanna. "I'll do worked at a salon in Owatonna shampoo sets, too". Deanna would like to encourage for a couple of years. The familiar is now new on Main Street Dodge Center continued.....

With four years experience Jesse started at the salon in September 2012. "I always wanted to do hair. I worked as a waitress and bartender and then made the decision to attend the Rochester School of Hair Design". Jesse's trademark is color and we're not talking basic blonde and brunette. She will do green, red, purple, blue-whatever the customer is in the mood to do. "Color is fun", Jesse says smiling. With the upcoming prom and wedding season keep in mind that Jesse does up-dos as well. An enjoyable part of the business for Jesse is seeing regular customers. "I am willing to take new clients, but it's fun when my regulars come in," she shares. Jesse believes that good hair can change things-the way people feel about themselves or what kind of a day they are having. She also believes honest communication means her customers leave with a style and/or cut they like. Jesse sums it up by saying, "We have good stylists here" and hopes people will take advantage of the convenience of the main street salon. With 10 years of experience hometown girl Erin Maroo started at the Hair Barn in January. Erin's mom was a stylist for 11 years providing Erin with early exposure to the business. "My senior project at Triton was on hair foiling. That pretty much determined what I was going to do. I have since mentored other students interested in hair". Razor cuts, short cuts, hair coloring and waxing top Erin's specialty list. Erin's work philosophy is best explained in a quote by Steve Jobs; "Your work is going to fill a large part of your life and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do." Someday she would like to own her own salon, but for now she is ready to bring business to main street Dodge Center. "Dodge Center has a need for this business and we are ready to provide it", Erin says enthusiastically.

The Dodge Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is once again taking tree orders for Spring 2013 windbreak and wildlife plantings. Tree varieties available this year are: American arbor vitae, eastern red cedar, black hill spruce, norway spruce, white spruce, white pine, red maple, black cherry, norway poplar, red oak, swamp white oak, midwest crabapple, lilac (villosa), Cranberrybush, black chokeberry and redosier dogwood. Quantities are limited so for the best selection of trees, it is best to order by March 29st. The SWCD also has a tree planter to rent and tree spades to use for planting. A well designed windbreak is a useful tool for snow management, wildlife food and shelter, energy conservation, livestock protection and aesthetics. A successful windbreak planting depends on proper establishment and proper care during the first several years after planting. Layout, site preparation, tree selection, pre-planting care, planting techniques, grass and weed control and correct pruning are all important factors to consider when planning and planting a windbreak. These factors ensure an effective and healthy windbreak for many years. A windbreak is also an investment towards the future value of your property. Common mistakes that will kill young trees are: not planting trees at the proper depth, allowing roots to curl back toward the top of the hole or trench thus not allowing proper root spread, leaving tree roots exposed to the sun and wind during planting, planting directly into sod, lack of watering, planting trees where they won’t receive sufficient sunlight and keeping trees packaged for more than a few days without cold storage and water. The Dodge SWCD will prepare a detailed windbreak plan for landowners free of charge. Persons wanting to place a tree order or are interested in having a windbreak plan developed for this spring can call the Dodge Soil & Water Conservation District at 374-6364 Ext. 3. The tree order form is also available on-line at dodgeswcd.org
