Dear Savvy Senior, Where can I find help for depression? My husband, who’s 68, has become lethargic and very irritable over the past year, and I’m concerned that he’s depressed. Worried Wife Dear Worried, Depression is unfortunately a widespread problem among U.S. seniors, affecting approximately 15 percent of the 65-and-older population. Here’s what you should know, along with some tips and resources for screening and treatments. Recognizing Depression Everyone feels sad or gets the blues now and then, but when these feelings linger more than a few weeks, it may be depression. Depression is a real illness that affects mood, feelings, behavior and physical health, and contrary to what many people believe, it’s not a normal part of aging or a personal weakness, but it is very treatable. It’s also important to know that depression is not just sadness. In many seniors it can manifest as apathy, irritability, or problems with memory or concentration without the depressed mood. To help you get some insight on the seriousness of your husband’s problem, here’s a rundown of the warning signs to be vigilant of. • A persistent feeling of sadness. • A lost interest in hobbies or activities that were previously enjoyed. • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness or hopelessness. • Trouble concentrating, remembering or making decisions. • Feeling anxious, restless, or irritable. • Loss of energy or motivation. • Inability to sleep or sleeping too much. • Not eating or eating too much. • Thoughts about dying or suicide. A good resource for identifying depression is Mental Health America, a national nonprofit organization that offers a free online depression screening test at depression-screening.org. This test takes just a few minutes to take and can help determine the severity of your husband’s problem. There’s also National Depression Screening Day which is coming up on Oct. 11. Sponsored by Screening for Mental Health, this is a completely free service that provides depression screenings by mental health professionals at hundreds of locations across the country. The test takes less than 15 minutes to complete, and is available to people of all ages. To find a site near you visit helpyourselfhelpothers.org. Also be aware that Medicare now covers annual depression screenings as part of their free Welcome to Medicare visit for new beneficiaries, and free annual wellness visits thereafter. Get Help If your husband is suffering from depressive symptoms, he needs to see his doctor for a medical evaluation to rule out possible medical causes. Some medications, for example, can produce side effects that mimic depressive symptoms – pain and sleeping meds are common culprits. It’s also important to distinguish between depression and dementia which can share some of the same symptoms. If he’s diagnosed with depression, there are a variety of treatment options including talk therapy, antidepressant medications or a combination of both. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a particularly effective type of talk therapy which helps patients recognize and change destructive thinking patterns that leads to negative feelings. For help finding a therapist who’s trained in CBT, ask your doctor for a referral, check your local yellow pages under “counseling” or “psychologists,” or check with the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (abct.org), or the Academy of Cognitive Therapy (academyofct.org). Another treatment worth mentioning is a relatively new procedure called transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). This FDA-approved treatment uses a small electromagnet placed on the scalp right behind the left forehead, and delivers a tiny electric current to the part of the brain linked to depression. TMS is currently available in about 420 psychiatrist offices around the country (see neurostartms.com) and is very effective for older patients. Savvy tip: The National Institute of Mental Health offers a variety of free publications on depression that you can order at infocenter.nimh.nih.gov, or call 866-615-6464. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.

LEGAL STATE OF MINNESOTA COUNTY OF DODGE Estate of Rosalyn R. Bruns a/k/a/ Rosalyn Bruns a/k/a “Rosy” Bruns, Decedent DISTRICT COURT Probate Division Third Judicial District Court File No. 20-PR-12-727 NOTICE AND ORDER OF HEARING ON PETITION FOR PROBATE OF WILL AND APPOINTMENT OF PERSONAL REPRESENTATIVE AND NOTICE TO CREDITORS It is Ordered and Notice is given that on October 8, 2012 at 9:00 a.m. a hearing will be held in this Court at the Dodge County Courthouse, 22 6th Street E, Mantorville, MN 55955, for the formal probate of an instrument purporting to be the will of Decedent, dated March 24, 1998, and for appointment of Jean E. Don’t skip a step: Child passenger safety education The week of September 17-21 is National Child Passenger Safety Week. A child needs to progress through different restraints as they age and grow: rear-facing infant seats, forward-facing toddler seats, booster seats, and seat belts. Free child passenger safety education will be offered at Dodge County Public Health at 42 East Main Street in Dodge Center on Monday, September 17, from 8-noon and 1-4:30. Children’s heights will be measured to determine which seat they should be riding in. Children will receive a sticker and parents can take home more information about seats. New recommendation from the American Association of Pediatrics state parents should keep their toddlers in rear-facing car seats until age 2, or until they reach the maximum height and weight for their seat. Law requires kids to be in child restraint or booster seat until age 8 and 4 feet 9 inches tall. This law makes booster seats a requirement — children cannot ride in just a seat belt until they are age 8 or 4 feet 9, whichever comes first. It is recommended to keep a child in a booster based on their height rather than age. Parents are encouraged to visit buckleupkids.mn.gov for more information on child passenger safety.

When asked if he has been a chef for very long, Larry King pauses, grins and said, "It's been 50 years". Larry is the newly hired chef at the Dodge Country Club. The country club did a complete remodel of the kitchen over the winter, according to club manager Ryan Kuster. He said they wanted to maximize the use of the kitchen so they decided to hire a full time chef with the idea of being open for breakfast, lunch and dinner year round. Larry King was washing dishes at age 12 and became a cook at 15. For 30 years he cooked out west for a hotel chain. He currently lives in Owatonna and answered an ad placed by the country club. What he likes about this job is that it's like starting a new business. "With the new kitchen there is a lot of room for growth," said King who feels strongly that he can help create growth with his cooking skills. So far, so good. Labor Day Sunday the country club served breakfast with an apple crepe special. "There was just the two of us, and we were going in every direction," said Kuster. "We served 50 breakfasts." The country club/restaurant will have, breakfast, lunch and dinner specials. A couple of recent specials were pork chop with scalloped potatoes and veggie or pepper steak with mashed potato, gravy and vegetable,

With the remodeled and expanded kitchen, the Dodge County Club has expanded their options and are serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. Larry King is the chef who brings 50 years experience and at the right is Ryan Kuster, the club manager.

each for $6.25. A popular breakfast item is the apple pecan crepe with sausage for $4.95 or bacon egg wrap topped with bacon cheese sauce for $3.95. Larry said he enjoys making his own menu. He promises that variety is important to attract new customers and keep the reg-

ulars coming back. Soups, sauces and gravy have been a Larry King specialty (such as the bacon cheese sauce in one of the breakfast specials). In the next few years the Dodge Country Club plans to build a new clubhouse. If they can grow the restaurant business that will go a long

way toward helping them build a new club house debt free. Ryan wants to make sure people know the Dodge Country Club is a public course and the restaurant is open to the public. Of course golf and breakfast, lunch or dinner is also a good option.

First KSB football contest won by Whalen in tiebreaker If the first Kasson State Bank football contest is an indication of how competitive the 2012 season is going to be, entrants better be on top of their game in making selections. Two contestants tied for first with only one wrong and there were 11 other entries with two incorrect picks. Sherry Whalen and Breydin Halverson tied with one incorrect pick. Whalen was an easy winner in the tiebreaker even though Halverson picked the exact K-M score in the tiebreaker. He had the score 34-21 with the KoMets winning over Lake City and the actual was 34-27. Whalen had the score 35-28 and was only one point off on each of the scores, picking K-M to win 35-28. She will win the $15 cash from the Kasson State Bank. Remember, a perfect score is good for $25 from the Kasson State Bank and $25 from the Dodge County Independent Newspaper. A couple of the tough picks were the PEM loss to Caledonia, a Clemson win over Auburn and the one point win by Northwestern at Syracuse. Last week's winner, Sherry Whalen, tied for first this week, but was edged out in the tiebreaker by Ian Stauffer of Kasson. Ian, Sherry, Alan Whalen, Jean Fate of West Concord, Daniel Rappe of Kasson and Isaac Marolt of Byron all had three incorrect picks and it came down to the tiebreaker, the Minnesota Viking 26-23 overtime win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. Rappe and Marolt had the Jaguars winning so they were knocked out of contention. Ian Stauffer had the final 27-17 and Alan Whalen had the final 21-20. Ian was a total of seven points off on the final and Alan eight points. It doesn't get much closer then that! There were a few very tough picks this week. The biggest was probably the Iowa State win over Iowa in college ball. Wisconsin was also upset at Oregon State and then there was the Green Bay Packer loss at home to San Francisco. This week's contest can be found in the shopper section of the DCI. September 24th from 4 to 7:00 p.m. Dodge County 4-H is hosting Get Green Night at the 4-H Building on the Dodge County Fairgrounds in Kasson. Kids and parents often wonder what 4-H is all about. In 4-H, school aged kids (kindergarten through one year past high school) get together in their communities to have fun, meet friends, and explore all types of activities. You’ll see and experience firsthand some of these activities if you come to Get Green Night. 4-H’ers can be kids in town, in a large city, or on a farm. You don’t have to raise animals, most kids in 4-H don’t. You just have to want to have a good time while getting to know other kids in your community. Kids and adult volunteers all over Minnesota learn, grow, and have fun in 4-H clubs and adventures. 4-H is part of the University of

Minnesota, so programs are based on University research about kids and learning. This past year youth in Dodge County 4-H went to the State Fair, exhibited projects at the County Fair, participated in Share the Fun, took part in demonstrations and food review, went to day camps, helped their community, and much more! If you are interested in joining or hearing more about Dodge County 4-H contact the Dodge County Extension Office at 507-634-6641 or kelly521@umn.edu

The Rochester Area Foundation is pleased to announce that the family of Mary Ehmke of Mantorville, Minnesota, has established a special fund honoring her daughter, Rachel Ehmke, with an initial contribution of $100,000. The Rachel Ehmke Memorial Foundation has been formed to help address problems and concerns of youth in crisis, focusing primarily on peer issues surrounding bullying, teen suicide prevention and chemical dependency. Rachel Ehmke was a stuRachel Ehmke dent at the KassonMantorville Public Schools who committed suicide in the spring of 2012. Through this fund Rachel’s family desires to reach out to other families and youth by financially supporting programs that work to prevent the tragedy that they have suffered with the death of a daughter. Rachel Ehmke Memorial Foundation is being established as a designated fund to serve as a grant making organization under the auspices of the Rochester Area Foundation to address issues surrounding these concerns. Processes for grant applications will be forthcoming. Those who wish to support this effort may make tax deductible contributions to the Rochester Area Foundation, 400 South Broadway, Suite 300, Rochester, MN 55904, designated for the Rachel Ehmke Memorial Foundation. The Rochester Area Foundation is a community foundation that serves as a vehicle for individuals and businesses to address concerns and opportunities in the larger community via philanthropy.
