Bark in the Park to be held Aug. 25 n

By Stephanie Vaughan

A local group is planning a howling good time at its second annual event. Bark in the Park will be held Saturday, August 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Riverside Park in Mantorville. The event, organized by the Mantorville Dog Park committee, will help raise money to build an off-leash dog park in Mantorville. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted. Mantorville Dog Park committee members are excited about new additions to this year's event. "This year's event will be bigger and better," said Meg Bryngelson, one of the committee's members. New this year: a silent auction, a dog parade and a dog pageant that will award canines in best-dressed, best trick, smallest dog and largest dog categories. New exhibitors include pet photographers and dog washers. Event attractions from last year's event, including agility and disc dog demonstrations and root beer floats, will also be featured. A bounce house will be set up for children, and food and will be available for purchase. Land for the dog park has been set aside underneath the Mantorville water tower on the northwest side of the city, near the intersection of Stagecoach Road and Jefferson Street. Funds raised from this event will go toward fencing and other expenses needed to help open the park. If enough money is raised, the group hopes to see the dog park open next spring. "Anybody who has a dog – and even those who don't – will want to come to Bark in the Park this year," said Mantorville Dog Park committee member Kay Gunderson. "There will be games and food, and we're working on some celebrity guests. This event is a great chance to support the Mantorville Dog Park and socialize with fellow dog lovers."

Thank You to all of those who helped with Mantorville's Olde Tyme Days, including the City of Mantorville, Mantorville EDA and Mantorville Chamber. We had 57 children ages 4-11 participate in the Pedal Pull, which was a first annual event. Thank you to the following sponsors: County Seat Coffeehouse Swenke Co. Alec Fischer, a recent 2012 graduate from Edina High School has created a documentary on bullying and suicide in Minnesota Public Schools entitled “Minnesota Nice?”. The film addresses the recent surge in teen suicides related to bullying, and focuses on real stories of current Minnesota students who are being bullied in school. Although the media has been covering the recent surge in suicides from GLBT students who have been bullied in school, Alec’s film also covers students who are bullied due to their race, religion, appearance, culture, and disability. The film was given a pre-screening at Edina High School, viewed by more than 1,000 students and faculty. It also premiered at the Edina Cinema at the end of June. The 45-minute documentary concluded with standing ovations and tearyeyed students. Below are quotes from a few students who posted their thoughts about the film via Facebook: “There are times when you know you just witnessed something that was going to have a huge impact on people. Watching "Minnesota Nice?" today was one of those times. Today I watched Alec Fischer's documentary about bullying in Minnesota and was overwhelmed……When it was finished, I saw on the faces of everyone there that it had moved them just as much as it had moved me. I know that everyone who watches this film will be inclined to be a kinder and more compassionate person. I believe that Alec has created something that will change the way people in Minnesota treat each other and that will help us to become a safer state.” KH “Minnesota Nice almost put me in tears Alec Fischer you did an awesome job!” MH “Alec, your documentary was amazing! Kasson Library sponsored a free event: Zumbro Zoe by Bonnie Adams, Kasson Library Director

The Kasson Library sponsored a free event on Tuesday, August 7 in North Park pavilion to over 84 children and parents. They learned information about the Zumbro Watershed and the animals that call the Zumbro River home.  Education Coordinator Kevin Strauss, his daughter Sarah and another staff member Katie, helped educate the children on keeping rivers clean for the animals and themselves.  Strauss, dressed as Zumbro Zoe, Katie and Sarah used a slide show to talk about the different animals and fish that live in the Zumbro River. They told stories of Zoe's river animal friends and simple tricks to keep the area rivers safe, clean and healthy. Zoe told  jokes, funny stories, and even had an Ecology Game Show for the children. Everyone got to met  Zumbro Zoe, the six foot Clean River Otter, the newest staff member of the Zumbro Watershed Partnership.  Since Zoe grew up in the Zumbro River, she has decided that she's the best creature to represent our river community in cities across the Zumbro Watershed. This free program was sponsored by the Zumbro Watershed Partnership.

The Dodge County Historical Society hosted a Mantorville business after-hours social at the museum. After hours is a social networking event established by the Mantorville Tourism Committee. The historical society board was anxious to show off their new look inside and out.

AFTER

BEFORE

In June a group of volunteers from the Community Celebration Church participated in CareFest by doing several community service projects in the area. One of the projects involved landscaping at the historical society. Shown are before and after photos.

Many were in attendance to hear about keeping rivers clean.

SEMAC announces grant application deadline The Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council announces a call for grant proposals in three categories. The postmark deadline is October 1, 2012. SEMAC is a non-profit arts agency and is the State of Minnesota Arts Board-designated regional arts council for the counties of Dodge, Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Houston, Mower, Olmsted, Rice, Steele, Wabasha, and Winona. All proposed projects must take place between December 1, 2012 and November 30, 2013. Arts & Cultural Heritage Fund Grants Proposals for Arts & Cultural Heritage fund ranging from $3,000 to $10,000 are accepted from qualified applicants. A match of 20% is required in this category. The Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund will support arts focused activities in three key areas: 1) Arts and Arts Access, 2) Arts Education, and 3) Arts and Cultural Heritage. SEMAC encourages applicants to research and develop proposals that incorporate two or more of the key areas with an emphasis on creating lasting partnerships among regional nonprofit arts organizations and other nonprofit groups. In addition to eligible arts organizations, nonprofits that do not have arts as a primary focus, such as schools, senior centers, community education, cultural groups and colleges are invited to apply. Future funding of Arts and Cultural Heritage Grants depends on appropriate use of current funding. SEMAC urges arts organizations, non-arts organizations with an arts component, and government entities to apply. First-time applicants must attend a proposal drafting session. Three sessions will be held. To learn more or to sign up, email staff@semac.org or call the SEMAC office at 507-281-4848. Presenter/Production Assistance Grants Proposals for Presenter/Production grants offer funding up to $3,000 to qualified applicants. Matching funds are required. Presenter Assistance grants are intended to help regional arts organizations and educational institutions sponsor appearances by touring artists or companies who have demonstrated high levels of artistic quality. These grants are not for local productions or artist residencies in schools. Production Assistance grants support activities directly involved in the creation, performance, publication, and exhibition of art. The two distinct subcategories within Production Assistance grants are: 1) Arts Production Projects, and 2) Administrative Support Projects. Small Towns/Rural Areas Grants The Small Towns/Rural Areas grants offer funding up to $3,000 to qualified applicants located in areas with populations under 7,500. Matching funds are required. SEMAC wishes to support and encourage the creation and development of art and arts organizations in communities with populations under 7,500. This support may be used for assistance in activities which directly involve the creation, performance, publication, or exhibition of art or assistance in administrative, operating, or capital expenditures. Applicants may include arts organizations, government entities and public or non-religious private schools, either individually or in cooperation. These grants are not for individual artists. For information about the grant application process, eligibility, or grant writing assistance, contact the SEMAC office at 2778 D Commerce Dr NW, Rochester, MN 55901 or call 507-281-4848. Kasson Continued....

Back Pack program The back to school back pack program is underway and many volunteers are already hard at work organizing and collecting school supplies. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this program it is a group of volunteers who generously give their time to help provide a backpack of necessary school supplies for children of low income families throughout Dodge County. Last year close to 300 children in the area were given a backpack of school supplies that matched their supply list for the grade and school they attend. With the economy still struggling even more children are in need this year. It is hoped that the wonderful citizens of Dodge County will donate school supplies to help the children of the community. Many churches in the area are already collecting supplies and there are drop boxes at several locations throughout the area. You can help by purchasing school supplies and bringing them to these drop boxes. Many of the local businesses have considerately placed drop boxes at their locations.
