COMMENCEMENT SPEAKER Linda Green, executive director of the Southern Virginia Regional Alliance (SVRA) at the Institute for Advanced Learning and Research, is a proud alumna of Danville Community College’s class of 1975 and also earned a certificate in quality control from the college in 1983. After transferring to Averett University, she double-majored in accounting and management science, and minored in computer science, earning a bachelor of science degree in 1985 and, in 1988, she earned her MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business. She also completed the DCC-Goodyear quality control certification program during her undergraduate tenure. Ms. Green and Goodyear employees broke national records, passing certification in the first testing, demonstrating DCC’s exceptional program. She worked from 1976 to 1989 as a quality engineer for Goodyear’s Danville, Virginia, tire manufacturing facility. With this foundation and appreciation for workforce training and professional credentials, Ms. Green went on to lead the manufacturing, entrepreneurial, and federal funding division of Virginia’s Center for Innovative Technology (CIT) from 1989 to 2004, before serving as executive director of the Virginia Research and Technology Advisory Commission (VRTAC), president and chief executive officer of Dan River Business Development Center, and district director for United States Congressman Robert Hurt. She has been employed in her current role at SVRA since October 2016. Ms. Green has served on numerous boards and federal and charitable organizations, including the National Business Incubation Association, National Foundation for Workforce Solutions, Goodwill Industries, National Science Foundation, Virginia Tech Business Technology Center, Hampton Roads Technology Incubator, and the Pittsylvania County Youth League. She was most recently named as one of DCC’s outstanding alumni. Ms. Green is a member of the Virginia Economic Developers Association board, Southern Piedmont Technology Council board, Danville Pittsylvania County Chamber of Commerce board, Virginia Maritime Association commerce development committee and founding member of the Southern Virginia Chapter, Averett University Board of Directors, and Riverview Rotary.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION HONORARY ASSOCIATE IN HUMANE LETTERS DEGREE Carrie P. Ashe is a native of Shelby, North Carolina. She graduated from Barber Scotia with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education and from North Carolina A & T State University with a master’s degree in reading education. She further studied at the University of Virginia, Radford University, and Virginia Tech. After graduating from Barber Scotia, Ms. Ashe was employed as a classroom teacher at Gibson Elementary School in Danville, Virginia, and later at Park Avenue Elementary School. She later served as assistant principal at Westmoreland Elementary School and coordinator of middle school education in the Danville Public Schools. She was also asked by the superintendent of schools to be the director of a summer program for academically talented elementary students. In addition, she was employed as a visiting instructor at North Carolina A & T State University. Ms. Ashe was named the first “master teacher” for the Danville Public Schools. In that assignment, she helped evaluate students, worked with teachers on teaching methods and materials, and helped develop more effective ways for organizing classrooms in the city. She was also given the responsibility of being the coordinator of a federal reading and mathematics program. In 1987, she retired after 32 years of dedicated service to the Danville Public School System, working with both children and adults. In 2001, she was awarded the prestigious Humanitarian Award from the City of Danville by Mayor John Hamlin. Not only has Ms. Ashe given years of service to the school system, she has also expanded her services to the community at-large. She conducted workshops at the Community Improvement Council for parents on “Becoming a Positive Advocate for your Child” and “Reading Makes a Difference.” She was the organizer of Project Literacy and has served on more than 15 boards and organizations throughout the city. Mrs. Ashe has served several terms on the Danville Community College President’s Advisory Panel on Black Concerns and completed two four-year terms on the DCC Board serving from July 1, 2009, through June 30, 2017. On the DCC Board, she served as vice chair in 2015 and 2016. This allowed her to become a regular attendee to the annual Virginia Community College System Chancellor’s Retreat as an advocate for the College. As for her commitment to DCC, Ms. Ashe has had a personal hand in recruiting and encouraging many students to attend DCC. She was even known to have paid tuition and secured funds and scholarships for students in the Danville area. She also initiated the expansion of the College Board Scholarships to include the Galileo Magnet High School and J. M. Langston Focus School. GRADUATION TRADITIONS Academic Procession and Regalia The academic procession is steeped in a long tradition dating back to the Middle Ages when students and scholars marched in ceremonies whenever a student accomplished his course of study. Traditionally, the graduation marshal is the most senior member of the faculty. Today, we have only one ceremony for graduates, but we wear regalia similar to those worn in the Middle Ages. Professors and students studied in poorly heated buildings, so long, warm robes and hoods were very useful. The distinctive hoods and doctoral robes were used to set the faculty apart from the students. These were worn every day at most colleges and universities until the 1860s. Traditionally, undergraduates wear only the black robes. Bachelor’s and master’s hoods have the colors of the university which awarded the degree on the inside. The color border which represents the teaching field is around the edge of the hood. The bachelor’s and master’s hoods are similar except the master’s sleeves are fuller. The doctoral hoods are longer and the bands of colors wider. The doctoral robes may be black or a color that the university designates. The robes also have velvet in the front from hem to neck, and three bands of velvet on the sleeves -- the velvet bands are in the color of the teaching field or may be black. Certain universities use a tam instead of the traditional mortarboard, but all people with doctorates wear a gold tassel. Faculty marshals traditionally wear a sash to distinguish them from the rest of the participants. Colors of Teaching Fields White................Arts and Letters Brown...........................Fine Arts Scarlet........................Theology Orange..................Engineering

Green.........................Medicine Light Brown...................Business Dark Blue..................Philosophy Lemon Yellow.................Library

Yellow...........................Science Light Blue..................Education

The Mace The mace of silver and walnut has its history in antiquity, first as a weapon, then as a symbol of royalty and a sign of authority. The mace, a club-like staff, is now traditionally carried by the Faculty Marshal as a symbol of the professor’s role and preeminence at modern institutions of higher education. The silver figure at the top of the mace carries the torch of knowledge. The mace is to be carried by the Faculty Marshal at each ceremony in which academic regalia is present.
