Means to Your Community Unlicensed Practice of Law (UPL) has recently become a hot topic in both the Florida legal and community management industries. The mere mention of the words are sure to spark heated debates; homeowners and management companies on one side, and many of the lawyers that represent the associations on the other. Members of the Florida Bar would like you to believe that many tasks that are routinely performed by Licensed Community Association Managers are in essence the practice of law and should be carried out by a lawyer. On June 22 a hearing was held by the Florida Bar Association to consider this topic. Community association managers, lawyers, and other members of the public testified on the matter of expanding the definition of the practice of law as it pertains to the role community association managers play in your associations. The committee will further debate this issue at their meeting in September 20th. If they are successful in this effort it will limit the Board’s options and increase the costs of many services that are currently performed at no additional charge or at a lesser cost by management companies. Summit Greens Gets Car Fit The residents of Summit Greens, located in Clermont, are working with the Clermont Police Department to implement Operation Car Fit. Car Fit is a national program developed through collaboration among AAA, the American Society on Aging, AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association. Car fit is designed to give senior drivers a quick, comprehensive check on correct safety belt positioning, distance from airbags, and how well their vehicles suit their abilities. It’s FAST, FUN, and FREE! This program took place at the Summit Greens Clubhouse and helped to make sure that the seniors of Summit Greens fit in their car safely. The Clermont Police Department provides training to the residents of Summit Greens so that they can implement this program and help their fellow residents remain comfortable and safe on the road. Teamwork "Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success." ~ Henry Ford Much of Leland Management's success can be attributed to the "Team" of individuals completing the day to day tasks of community association management. From the beginning, Rebecca and David Furlow, owners of Leland Management, have placed a high value not only on hiring and retaining the best and brightest individuals, but on creating strong, functional teams. Each association has the benefit of having multiple team members work on their account allowing for a natural collaborative and internal review process. Additionally, because teamwork is fostered and rewarded at Leland Management, it is not unusual to see employees pitching in to help out others (outside their groups), coming together to support a local charity, or just offering kind words and support to one another. For Leland Management, the results are outstanding: strong teams, happy employees, and outstanding customer service.

Make ‘m Smile Leland Management was out in force at the 10th annual Nathaniel's Hope Make 'm Smile event at Lake Eola. Nathaniel's Hope is an organization that is dedicated to sharing hope with children who have special needs and their families. They offer support by providing resources, assistance, education and hope to families all over the world. This is the 10th year of the, "Make 'm Smile" event which is a free community festival that celebrated kids with special needs (VIP kids) and their families. This event featured a Buddy Stroll where VIP families are “buddied up with people from around the community for a stroll around Lake Eola. Leland Management is proud to be a sponsor of this event and have the opportunity to spend time with and put a smile on the faces of the thousands of children who attended. It was an amazing day, one that truly touch the hearts and minds of those who participated. For More information on Nathaniel's Hope please visit www.nathanielshope.org

National Night Out On August 7th, Leland Management and many of our communities participated in "National Night Out". This event has been held annually since 1984 and is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch in the United States and Canada. National Night Out is meant to increase awareness about police programs in communities, such as drug prevention, town watch, neighborhood watch and other anti-crime efforts. Last year, 37 million people from all 50 states participated in the event. This year, even higher participation was anticipated. Community associations, towns and cities will celebrate this event in their own unique way. Typically the celebrations include the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils as well as block parties, cookouts, visits from local police and sheriff departments, parades, exhibits, flashlight walks, contests, and youth programs. Leland Management proudly supports National Night Out. For more information on National Night Out please visit www.nationaltownwatch.org

Kid’s Day On August 3rd Leland Management's team got a little smaller, in height that is, as we celebrated our Annual Kid's Day. Kid's Day is a fun filled day for the children of our team members providing them the opportunity to learn what their parents do for a living, and giving them an opportunity to have some fun before the start of school. This year's kids day was a tremendous success, accommodating over 45 children. Team members set up a fun filled day for the kids including arts and crafts, board games, videos, lunch, and everyone's favorite, a Game Truck. At the end of the day, Leland Management provided the children with a surprise by supplying them with a bag of school supplies. This kid’s day proved to be a fun and exciting time for kids and parents both.
