Hello everyone and welcome for our second consecutive home Soccer Shop WaiBOP Premiership and Championship double header. Today we welcome Papamoa to the Domain for what should be an entertaining couple of games of football. The first team will be able to settle in for a run of home games over the next few weeks, making things just that little bit more comfortable. After today, we play NRFL Division 1 side, Fencibles United, here in round 1 of the ISPS Handa Chatham Cup, then West Hamilton United in the Premiership. Great for players and local fans alike. The Waikato junior football finally began this morning. Most of our junior teams played at home in what was an ideal start to the season. We have continued our growth of junior players and teams this year, which is a continuation of a trend that’s developed over the last three years. More junior teams has meant we’ve needed to find more coaches to look after them. That’s always a challenge, but we managed to get there again. We have a number of new-to-football people looking after teams in 2019. That’s great in terms of getting more people involved in the game, but we also need to ensure they have the support they need. Our local junior players have never had things so good in terms of the development opportunities on offer. The Swifts Player Development Programme, run in conjunction with the Ricki Herbert Football Academy, was extremely popular during term 1 and gets going again on Monday. We also have a goalkeeper development programme starting up in a couple of weeks, which is something we’ve been able to introduce for the first time this year. If the taster sessions in April are anything to go by then this should prove popular. Anyway, back to senior football. I hop you enjoy today’s games and I’ll see you on the sidelines. WaiBOP Premiership Update - Round 5 Waikato Unicol has bounced back from last weekend’s defeat in The Soccer Shop WaiBOP Premiership by taking three big points at previously unbeaten Papamoa FC. Most of the Premiership’s sides had two games in a short space of time this week due to the ANZAC Day ISPS Handa Chatham Cup preliminary round so it was always going to be interesting to see how they pulled up on Saturday. For the most part the results, if not all the performances, went to script. Unicol had the better of their match at Flying Mullet Papamoa, but Jonathan Tobias’ first half goal was the only scoring action in a gritty 1-0 win. Stephen Kapa and Jared Seelye were also key performers for the visitors as they picked up their fourth win in five games to stretch their lead at the top of the table to a couple of points. With regular players missing for this one, coach Dan Goodwin will be pleased to know his squad of players is already showing the kind of depth, not to mention resolve, that could be needed if Unicol is to pick up their maiden title. After a slow start to 2019, Taupo appear to be back in the groove after their third win on the trot at Tauranga Blue Rovers. The 6-4 score line indicates the continuation of a shift in style for the Lakesiders. Their 2018 title was built around a strong, stingy defensive unit but this winter it’s all about what’s going on at the other end of the field. Much of this is due to the growing goal threat of Jordan Lamb, who scored four more at

Rovers and appears well on the way to being fully adjusted to the style of football offered in the Premiership. Rovers were obviously serious proponents in this encounter and Daniel Kent’s brace, along with goals from Alex Elliott and Joaquin Reynoso ensured they kept Taupo honest. Taupo sit in second on ten points, two ahead of Papamoa, Comag Matamata Swifts and Melville United. Both Matamata and Melville shared the points in their respective matches following 1-1 draws. The Swifts hosted Otumoetai in a game that looked for all the world like both sides had played 120 minutes of football only two days earlier. Neither side offered much in the way of a goal threat until midway through the second half, when Ben McLean headed home from a set-piece only for Matamata to win a penalty straight from the re-start, which Jamie Baxter converted. Melville bagged their point at Gisler Architects Te Awamutu. Ben Wheatley put the Hamiltonians in front during the first half before Jack Connor levelled things up twenty minutes from time. In the other matches, both Tauranga Boys’ College and West Hamilton United secured their first wins of the season. First half goals from Alfie Cole and Vincent Phirun helped Boys’ College to a 2-0 home win over Ngaruawahia United, while West Hamilton’s 2-1 victory over Te Puke United pushed the visitors back to the bottom of the table.
