DBDM ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO 2017

An old man coughed briefly and swift to clear his throat as the young lady in front of him leaned twenty degrees backward to comfort her strained back. The lights dimmed to a calming medium while every eye and mind ceased their current conversation to seek the curiosity of this new bewilderment; the performance began. Since I was young, I enjoyed writing and drawing story books to bring to life my dreams and imagination. Dreams that flowed clearly from my mind, to my hand, pencil, lead and finally on to my page. Architecture is but a dream made into reality. It is my passion and my world to design a better life for humanity through architecture, inspiration and structure. I am a dynamic and ambitious designer who possesses the will to coordinate and be involved in all phases of an architectural project. My personal traits and characteristics include being an inspiring, creative, independent and an outgoing individual with interest in analytical, diagrammatical, emotional and musical sense of forms. With such in mind, my destination and goals have always been clear to me in terms of an architectural degree as I plan on moving forward with my studies toward a successful occupation.

1 POINT 05 IS PART OF A LARGER CALL FOR URBAN DENSIFICATION AND INTENSIFICATION. IT CHALLENGES WAYS TO EXPLORE THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE TRADITIONAL CORE BY CONSIDERING WHAT IT MEANS TO LIVE IN AN URBAN NEIGHBORHOOD IN NORTH AMERICA IN THE 21ST CENTURY. IT ALSO CONSIDERS THE FORM AND QUALITY OF THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT AND, IN PARTICULAR, HOW INDIVIDUAL BUILDINGS WORK IN CONCERT TO PRODUCE A LARGER WHOLE. POINT 05 CHALLENGES TO INCREASE THE VARIETY OF KINDS OF PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN THE CORE AND FIND A WAY TO ACCOMMODATE A BROADER SPECTRUM OF THE MIDDLE CLASS DOWNTOWN.

2017 ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO DBDM 2 DESIGN IS USED TO ORCHESTRATE THE WAYS A DIVERSE DEMOGRAPHIC INTERACTS – QUESTIONING THE ROLE THAT ARCHITECTURE PLAYS BOTH IN BUILDING COMMUNITY AND IN DEFINING TURF. THE PROPOSAL EMBRACES THE FACT THAT DIFFERENT PEOPLE HAVE DIFFERENT NEEDS AND THAT CIRCUMSTANCES AND PRIORITIES CHANGE THROUGHOUT OUR LIVES. THE ENVIRONMENTS DEVELOPED ARE FLEXIBLE IN ORDER TO CHANGE THE RESIDENTS AND THE CITY AS A WHOLE, WHILE BEING STABLE AND SIGNIFICANT ENOUGH TO WITHSTAND THOSE CHANGES.

PROVIDING A SPACE OF LEARNING AND EXPLORING ALLOWS THE YOUTH TO INTERACT THROUGH THEIR OWN CURIOSITY AND TO THEIR OWN BENEFIT. AS GENERATIONS PASS, IT IS IMPORTANT TO ENSURE THAT OUR YOUTH ARE TAUGHT NOT ONLY WORDS AND NUMBERS, BUT HOW MANY DIFFERENT WAYS WE CAN INTERACT WITH THE PEOPLE AROUND US AS WELL AS THE FORMS AND SHAPES THAT SURROUND US. KANATA KINDERGARTEN PROVIDES A NURTURING GROUND FOR IMAGINATION, EXPEDITION AND LEARNING. UNDERSTANDING THE WORLD AT A YOUNG AGE IN AN ENABLING AND SAFE ENVIRONMENT.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE FLORAL ANALYSIS WAS INSPIRED BY THE CATENARY CURVE PREVIOUSLY FOUNDED IN ANTONIO GAUDI’S SAM FAMILLIA AS WELL TOYO ITO’S ORGANIC STRUCTURE, THE TAICHUNG METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE. THE STYLE (OR STEM) IS DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR A STRUCTURE BASED UPON THE CATENARY CURVE. ON THE INSIDE OF THE STYLE IS THE EXTERIOR, A GAP DESIGNATED FOR THE TRANSITION OF H2O FROM THE ROOF INTO THE GROUND; FEEDING THE SURROUNDING LANDSCAPE AND EARTH NUTRIENTS WHILE PROVIDING A STRONG HABITAT AND STRUCTURE FOR HUMANITY. THE SEPAL (OR EXTERIOR CLADDING) PROVIDES ADDITIONAL STRUCTRAL COMPONENTS, THOUGH IS PRIMARILY USED FOR ITS EXTERIOR BEAUTY AND INTERACTIVE QUALITIES WITH THE PUBLIC. THE FLOWERS PEDDLES AND SEPAL PROVIDE AN ELEGANT AND DIVINE PISTIL (FLOWER) WHILE MAINTAING A MOST RIGID AND KNOWLEDGEABLE DEMONSTRATION OF SPACE FRAME ARCHITECTURE.

PRE FLOOD (PRESENT) A VESSEL FOR REFUGE IF WATER LEVELS RISE DUE TO UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES. THE PROPOSAL IMAGINES THAT THE ACTIVITY OF THE EXPOSITION AT THE LLE-SAINTE HELENE AND LLE NOTRE DAME NEVER CEASED SINCE EXPO 1997, AND THAT THESE ISLANDS PERFORMED UNINTERRUPTEDLY AS A CONTINUOUS ACTIVE EXPOSITION SITE. AS THE FICTIONAL SITE FOR THE ACCUMULATION OF INSERTIONS OF ARCHITECTURAL PAVILIONS, THE ARCHIPELAGO HAS RUN OUT OF SPACE AND THEREFORE MUST EXPAND.

2017

ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

THE ARC PROPOSES, IN 2017, A MULTI-TENTICULAR PLATFORM THAT PRODUCES SUPPLEMENTARY EXHIBITION SITES WHILE CONNECTING THE TWO ISLANDS. FOR A TIME, THE TWO ISLANDS AND SUPPLEMENTARY PLATFORM WILL BEHAVE AS A COMPLETELY INTEGRATED, CONTINUOUS, LAND FORM. HOWEVER, SHOULD WATER LEVELS RISE, THE NEW PLATFORM – DEPICTED HERE, SUPPORTING A NUMBER OF IMAGINED NEW EXPOSITION PAVILIONS, BUILDINGS AND SUPPORTIVE SERVICES – WOULD DETACH FROM THE ISLANDS AND FLOAT ABOVE THEM ON TOP OF THE NEW WATER LEVEL.

9

POST FLOOD (FUTURE) IN THIS SENSE, BY 2067, THE ENVISIONED ACCUMULATION OF NEW ARCHITECTURE CONSTITUTE MORE THAN A MERE EXPOSITION PLAYGROUND. RATHER, THEY OFFER THE STARTING POINT FOR NOT ONLY A NEW CITY, BUT FOR A NEW BEGINNING. WE COME TO UNDERSTAND, THEREFORE, THAT THE SUPPLEMENTARY PLATFORM BUILT IN 2017 WAS, IN THE END, A SUBTERFUGE FOR REFUGE.

PROFESSOR MANUEL BAEZ INSTALLATION EXPLORES THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN DESIGN, CULTURE AND THE EVOLUTION OF STRUCTURAL, TECHNOLOGICAL AND SCIENTIFIC INNOVATIONS. THE EVOLVING RESEARCH INVESTIGATES THE VERSATILE AND GENERATIVE POTENTIAL OFFERED BY COMPLEX PROCESSES AND SYSTEMS. CARLETON UNIVERSITIES OJIGKWANONG DEMONSTRATES MORPHOLOGICAL DIVERSITY OFFERING NEW INSIGHTS INTO THE GENERATIVE DIVERSITY LURKING WITHIN NATURAL PROCESSES AS REVEALED BY MODERN ANALYTICAL TOOLS.

EXPANDABLE TUNNEL BRIDGE LOCATED BETWEEN TWO TOWERS, THE BRIDGE PROVIDES SAFE CROSSING AT INFINITE HEIGHTS. CONSTRUCTED OF STAINLESS STEEL, COPPER AND GLASS; THE INTRICATE MOVEMENT OF THE STRUCTURE RELIES UPON THE DISTRIBUTION OF ITS OWN WEIGHT THAT IS SPREAD THROUGHOUT EACH ARM OF THE BRIDGE AND CARRIED BACK INTO THE CONNECTING BUILDLINGS STRUCTURE. THE EXPANDABLE/ CONTRACTIBLE TUNNEL BRIDGE IS A CLEAR DEMONSTRATION OF A IMAGINATION AND UNDERSTANDING OF PRACTIAL THINKING. THE MODEL REFLECTS THE TRUE INTENTIONS OF THE PROJECT COMPLETED IN FIRST YEAR ARCHITECTURAL STUDIES.
