Santa Pavloviča

interviews

Local Brand Manager Latvia Garnier & Maybelline New York

5

Why did you choose to work at L’Oréal? Since I remember myself, I have always had passion for beauty. And L'Oréal is the company that helps millions of people to make their life more beautiful every day. Consequently, for me L'Oréal is the beauty dream that came true. Apart from that, I was eager to work in an international company and meet people from different cultures. After meeting L'Oréal people at Days of Opportunities, I had the feeling that I share the same values and drive. Moreover, it was very clear that people at L’Oreal are very passionate about what they do and love their work. That altogether convinced me that L'Oréal is definitely the right choice for me. What skills and characteristics are needed to be a great part of the L’Oréal team? You definitely need to have a positive attitude and passion and drive for

beauty. You also need to be open-minded and flexible. As our business is very dynamic, one needs to be ready to adapt to changes quickly. I think the most important thing is to have a strong personality, to have something which is of your own, and it doesn’t matter what it is. It takes great courage ma to stand out from the crowd and that’s what is appreciated at L’Oreal. Here, at L’Oreal, we are all great leaders and team players at the same time and that differentiates L’Oreal employees from others.

What kind of advice could you give to students who want to work at L’Oréal? Be brave, certainly be passionate and confident about whatever you do and just believe in yourself. Confidence is the first thing that distinguishes you from the crowd. Don’t be afraid to show initiative, be proactive and entrepreneurial – it will be appreciated. It is important to have that little sparkle in your eyes and th willingness to make one step further, to go beyond, to capture the unknown. So you definitely need to have the winner’s attitude and that little something of your own that makes you special as a personality.

The inner spirit is very positive; I could actually say it’s very similar to SSER friendly, but with certain amount of competition, which is a good thing as it drives growth. Another thing - everybody loves the brands we work with and this is our biggest passion. We have the winner’s attitude, so for us it is always wi important to be number one, be the first in terms of everything. Altogether, it’s our common drive for excellence, being the

leader and passion for beauty. As an innovative company, what kind of changes might L’Oréal experience in the foreseeable future? Well, it is obvious that technology is evolving very quickly and that affects every industry in one way or another. Everything has become more transparent with all the social networks and global digitalization. The border between clients and the companies or brands is becoming more ambiguous. A brand is no longer distant from people; it is closer than ever, it has become personal. For L'Oréal this implies listening to consumers and being very close on a daily basis. It’s no longer just about producing things that will serve the basic needs, like producing shampoo just because people need to wash hair. It’s about producing and branding the exact shampoo that will be loved by the sh consumers, will stick to someone’s heart and communicate in a consumer’s preferred language. To serve this, L'Oréal has different brands which speak different languages to different consumers because we want to help people make their lives more beautiful. Consumer based marketing is the field in which we are investing a lot now. I believe that the border between consumers and brands will eventually become less visible and the ones who are not able to adapt will be the ones to lose.

interviews

What do you like the most at L’Oréal? It’s a set of many things. The most important ones are the people and the company culture. Coming from different backgrounds, all L'Oréal people are great professionals in the field and are willing to share their expertise for the sake a common goal. This experience of sharing is very interesting– you can go to sh anyone in the company and ask the most stupid question just because you want to understand what they are doing. At the end what matters is that it will make everyone’s work more efficient. As each of us have different backgrounds, it’s always interesting to learn from other colleagues’ experiences. I enjoy this process a lot. Daily work involves a lot of teamwork which also implies that you’ll never be left alone in case of need. We love meeting, brainstorming and doing things together because we believe that together we can make it better.

Baiba

Lokenbaha

interviews

Consultant

in

the

 Advisory

Department

9

Why

did

you

choose

EY? Lauma

(L):

I

decided

to

go

for

a

position

 in

 EY

 because

 I

 was

 the

 Key

 Account

 Manager

 for

 EY

 in

 the

 Student

 Association

 for

 two

 years.

 I

 communicated

 a

 lot

 with

 EY

 and

 understood

 that

 the

 stereotypes

 which

 are

 often

 associated

 with

 the

 company

 do

not

apply.

So

this

experience

and

the

 do established

 contacts

 encouraged

 me

 to

 join

EY. Baiba

 (B):

 The

 reason

 why

 I

 joined

 the

 Advisory

 Department

 is

 the

 dynamic

 working

 environment.

 In

 the

 first

 two

 years,

 there

 were

 no

 two

 projects

 that

 were

 similar

 in

 terms

 of

 content,

 methodology

 and

 structure,

 which

 appealed

 to

 me.

 Thus,

 it

 is

 interesting

 and

 it

 broadens

 my

 knowledge

 in

 the

 an field,

 which

 is

 essential

 for

 my

 further

 professional

career. What

 is

 the

 best

 thing

 about

 working

 at

EY? B:

 The

 first

 thing

 is

 the

 extensive

knowledge

 you

 can

 acquire

 in

 a

 short

 time,

 which

 creates

 endless

 further

 opportunities.

 As

 a

 first-year

 consultant,

 I

 already

 work

 with

 clients

 and

 experts

 on

various

projects

in

the

private

as

well

 as

 public

 sectors.

 Thus,

 I

 learn

 how

 to

 communicate

 with

 people

 on

 different

 levels

 and

 from

 different

 backgrounds.

 le This

 specifically

 applies

 to

 Latvia’s

 office,

as

it

is

rather

small

in

terms

of

the

 number

 of

 employees.

 So

 there

 is

 more

 responsibility

 given

 to

 junior

 consultants

 in

Latvia

than

in

bigger

offices

in

Europe.

 Also,

 the

 job

 is

 challenging,

 which

 I

 enjoy.

L:

 The

 second

 thing

 is

 order,

 which

 prevails

 in

 the

 company,

 thus

 contributing

 to

 transparency

 and

 comprehension

 of

 your

 responsibilities.

L:

I

can

relate

to

that.

Today,

because

of

 Valentine’s

Day,

our

department

decided

 to

 make

 juice.

 So

 all

 of

 us

 together

 peeled

fruit,

squeezed

it

and

simply

had

 fun

together! Also,

 a

 very

 important

 aspect

 is

 the

 opportunity

to

grow.

EY

employs

people

 who

are

passionate

about

what

they

do;

 and

 if

 you

 are

 driven,

 you

 have

 many

 chances

to

advance

within

the

company. Even

 if

 you

 decide

 to

 leave

 for

 some reason,

 the

 entry

 “EY”

 in

 your

 CV

 is

What

 advice

 would

 you

 give

 to

 those

 students

 who

 consider

 applying

 to

 EY

intern

or

employee

positions? L:

 Grab

 this

 opportunity!

 Many

 students

 believe

 these

 often

 false

 assumptions

 about

financial

service

companies

such

 as

 EY;

 even

 I

 believed

 them

 before

 I

 started

working

here!

You

can

only

find

 out

 whether

 they

 are

 true

 if

 you

 try

 it

 yourself.

 B:

 I

 agree.

 Even

 if

 you

 decide

 not

 to

 pursue

 your

 career

 in

 this

 industry,

 the

 knowledge

and

experience

EY

can

give

 you

will

be

invaluable.

interviews

Everyone

 what

 so

 that

 th you

 can

 concentrate

 on

 your

 job

 and

perform

to

the

maximum;

everything

 else

is

 B:

 Another

 thing

 is

 the

 environment,

 which,

to

my

mind,

resembles

SSE.

The

 environment

 is

 rather

 informal;

 everyone

 is

very

friendly

and

open.

You

can

easily

 from

Cooperation

Latvia's

 education

 system

 as

 a

 whole

 is

 currently

 unable

 to

 meet

 the

 demands

 of

 a

 globally

 impacted

 society,

 economy

 and

 workforce.

 In

 order

 to

 fully

 prepare

 our

 students

 for

 the

 future,

 we

 must

 deliver

 education

 that

 inspires

passion

to

learn

in

the

classroom

and

succeed

in

 the

world. Mission

Possible

aim

is

that

every

child

in

Latvia

receives

 education,

giving

him/her

the

opportunities

to

develop

full

 potential,

motivation,

and

skills

for

lifelong

learning.

Mission

Possible

seeks

to

improve

Latvia's

educational

system

by

harnessing

the

enthusiasm

 and

energy

of

dynamic

young

people,

who

recognize

the

value

of

quality

education

and

are

 motivated

to

inspire

it

in

others.

With

crucial

support

from

partners

in

corporate,

private

and

 public

sectors,

we

recruit

Latvia's

best

and

brightest

university

graduates,

placing

them

as

 teachers

into

schools

nationally

to

"raise

the

bar"

of

quality

in

education—and

enabling

them

 to

develop

into

Latvia's

future

leaders.

 What

we

do:

Founded

in

2007,

Mission

Possible

emulates

established

programs—including

Teach

the

 and

—

in

their

of

life

while

 working

two

We

our

bimonthly

training,

and

receive

support

from

 a

school-based

mentor

and

experienced

program

staff

focused

on

maximizing

teachers'

impact

on

their

students. Alumni

Network:

After

serving

in

the

two-year

program,

Fellows

become

members

of

an

alumni

network

and

 continue

to

fulfill

our

mission.

Whether

alumni

continue

to

serve

as

teachers,

or

they

enter

into

business,

non-profit

or

 other

sectors,

they

form

a

community

of

change-agents

seeking

to

improve

the

quality

of

education

in

Latvia—as

well

as

 the

ongoing

development

and

prosperity

of

the

country.

Mission

Possible

is

a

member

of

the

global

education

to

teach

in

high-need

classrooms

and

to

work

throughout

their

lives,

 both

within

and

outside

of

to

expand

opportunity

for
