POSTERS The following posters were made at my job in the Office of Student Involvement on UMSL’s north campus. I work there as a graphic artist designing posters that hang on the rotunda in the Millennium Student Center.

Student organizations put in art requests that my coworkers and I complete. The posters are printed in the office as large as 40” by 60”.

SCIENCE EXHIBIT: HOW WE SEE COLOR The first step of this project was to choose a subject with a process. After doing research, I designed a logo, the exhibit panels, an iPad app, and an animation showing how you would move through the app.

Crest: the highest point on a wave.

What is light?

Color is all around us.

The world would be difficult to handle without it. Color helps us identify objects such as:

Radiation refers to waves that make up the color spectrum.

The electromagnetic, or color spectrum is the full range that the radiation extends.

10-2 and longer

How is this possible?

Let’s answer that question with a better quesiton.

Trough: the lowest point on a wave.

How do waves become color?

The Process

Each wave has a frequency.

Step 1

Frequency is the number of waves that pass a given point per second.

Solar (white) light shines down from the sun. Although solar light appears white to us, it is made up of all the colors combined.

3 waves per second.

Since 3 waves (from crest to crest) have passed the given point in one second, we can successfully determine its frequency.

Cones and Rods

Inside the retina are cells called rods and cones. Rods help you see in low light conditions, but cannot detect color. You have 3 types of cones (red, green, and blue) that can detect color.

IRIS Step 3

On our eye, light hits the cornea, which bends it towards the pupil. The pupil dilates to let in more or less light.

Identify.

What do the cones say?

The frequency of the wave determines its color. The frequency of light itself is what we call color.

CORNEA

The red cone detects red light which activates it to send a signal to the brain, letting you know that you’re seeing red (and so on with the other 2 cones).

RETINA

PUPIL LENS Step 4

The light goes through the pupil to the lens, which angles it to a point on the retina.

Step 2

The light hits the surface of an object and is reflected or absorbed. When it hits a banana, majority of the colors will be absorbed into it and converted into heat. However, the yellow light will reflect off the banana and hit our eye.

Step 5

Since we have no yellow cones, the 2 closest cone colors (red and green) activate and send signals along the optic nerve to the brain, identifying the object as yellow.

TYPE SPECIMEN: GLAM I created the typeface “Glam” with party-favor rings for a fun, energetic feel, great for any celebration.

Glam is a sans serif typeface made of large party favor rings. It’s lowercase composition with the various shapes makes it soft and inviting. The pink, blue, and purple color palette give you that “pop!” your party needs.

Milk BEVERAGE BRANDING: COWMOO MILK The objective of this project was to build a beverage around a certain vegetable or fruit. I choose black-eyed peas, also known as cowpeas. I extended the brand with 2 extra flavors: chocolate and strawberry.

BIN: BOOKS WITHIN For my capstone project, I chose to create a book vending machine called "Bin", which is short for "books within". The vending machine would be placed in book deserts nationwide and near neighborhoods so kids and adults can have access to

current fiction novels for leisurely reading. A website was also made for online orders and ebooks. I made posters to advertise the brand, and created mailer packaging with straightforward wording to deter criminals from stealing packages off porches.
