Don’t Take Your Life For Granted

“T

here are millions of people out there with a lot of problems — many of them worse than yours,” I heard myself saying to my son. Oh, my woman, when did you get so wise? Later, when I was walking on the beach with my daughter, I saw a man sitting on top of his cooler, talking intensely on his cell phone. Here at the beautiful beach, I couldn’t help myself. I thought, “Get a life.” See, we people are like that. We make assumptions about others without knowing them. It’s not fair, we shouldn’t do it, but it’s what we do. I mean maybe that man was handling a crisis of some kind. Maybe he was LUCKY to be doing his business at the beach. Maybe he was getting bad news from his oncologist! But my son had come up to my beach chair complaining. “There’s nothing to doooo,” he’d whined. Annoyed, I’d quipped back. Yes, he’s a teenager and yes, teenagers are antsy bodies who always need to have something going on or they get boooored. I wanted to say, “Look at the pelicans flying in a ‘V’ above your head!” “Look at the way the sun makes sparkling diamonds on the water!” Blah blah blah is all he’d hear. Like when I used to say, “Read a book!” Our world is so perfectly backwardly designed. It won’t be until my absolutely healthy and handsome boy has big life issues happen to him that he’ll notice the beauty. That’s when he’ll need to. He’ll need comfort someday; he’ll need direction when he’s on his own and hard things happen. He’ll need a life. What kind of life? One where everything that is given to him is not taken for granted. One where a simple sip of cool water on a hot day is a huge reward. One where just being at the seaside is a GIFT; a huge and generous present that there even IS an ocean for all of us humans to enjoy. And back to all that we don’t know about each other. Millions of souls are strangers until a person makes an effort to crack a shell. “I love your hat—” or “Are you from around here?,” you might start. Once you do, once you break the ice, a relationship can begin. We must not take each other for granted. Or our lives. I really want my boy to know that. So ... maybe I’ll go join in him in a little crabbing ... and just enjoy it. I mean, we NEVER get to go crabbing at home in Tennessee ... and we DO love crabbing so!

FEED BACK From Our Facebook Page

QUESTION! “Can you please recommend lunch ideas for my picky 4-year-old? Lunch on a good day means a PB&J sandwich or a grilled cheese. The doctor says he’s underweight, but eating is a pain!”

“Whatever you do, don’t start a food battle. It will make it worse. Try giving him protein drinks. Our son was super picky and he turned out fine. The only rule was that he had to try one new thing every week. We would have the new food every day.”

veggie muffins. Snack replacements: Crunchy chickpeas, macadamia/cashew/ pistachio/ peanuts, 100 percent cheese crisps like Whisps, craisins or raisins mixed in with goldfish etc, trail mix, veggie chips.” Brittany Ulrich Joyner

Lisa R. Brown “Buy a can of powder Pediasure. Whatever flavor he likes. I got three cans off of Amazon for a decent price. Add it to the blender with milk and you can even slip in some fruits. This will help him gain weight. I have a very picky one also, and he hardly eats anything. So I bought this and told him it was a milkshake! He drank it quickly and asks for one everyday.” Brie Flores “Yogurt pouches with little to no sugar added, homemade smoothies with spinach/veggies and greek yogurt, or PB/ strawberry/banana smoothies. Sweet potato fries, or mashed sweet potatoes with toasted marshmallows on top. Sneaky replacements like cauliflower pizza crust, zoodles, veggie tots (Dr. Praegers is a good brand),

12 july 2021

“Kids are all different. My second son was so picky. He would not eat any sauces — including ketchup & spaghetti sauce. He ate chicken nuggets, french fries, plain spaghetti, mac & cheese, & peanut butter sandwiches (no jelly) — that’s it! Our pediatrician said kids have a tendency to get the nutrition they need. He said to keep offering good foods, but no need to try to force it. We did later supplement with Boost when he was a very skinny 10 year old. He is now 27 and eats all kinds of interesting foods and is very healthy!” Cindy Prow Engleman “I found the book Deceptively Delicious: Simple Secrets to Get Your Kid Eating Good Food helpful.” Stephanie Turley

“We use a bento box. We pack rolled up lunch meat, cheese sticks, fruit, crackers, pirate booty, applesauce pouches (find the ones with yogurt and other fruits and veggies mixed in for more vitamins and calories) whole bananas, mini cookies, yogurt smoothies, yogurt-covered raisins, and at home have bean dip with cheese and chips, lots of veggies with ranch dip, graham crackers with peanut butter and apple slices and popcorn and cheese, and gummy vitamins!” Regan Dawn “I’m so glad I’m not alone. My son doesn’t eat well, either. He only has a few things that he loves. One trick to getting some greens in him though is to make a fruit smoothie and add some spinach to it. I usually put banana/strawberry yogurt, cut up strawberries and a whole banana add milk and some spinach and blend it. My son doesn’t even notice a flavor change.” Elise Friederich “My pediatrician says they will eat when they are hungry. All of the things you have talked about

nashvilleparent.com

are healthy choices. Both of my sons had issues with certain textures and would only eat certain things. My oldest son was a very picky child and now he eats a variety of foods. So it will pass eventually.” Clarice Baker “My daughter would only eat peanut butter and jelly at this age. I worried about it until my pediatrician told me that’s a great food, full of protein! So let him eat peanut butter and jelly! We all grow up and expand our tastes; best not to stress yourself out about it as that just creates more problems for you and your child.” Jane Hinman “Stay away from feeding therapy. Honestly, parents create bigger problems when they start sending the message that ‘something’s wrong with you’ to their kids.” Caroline Clark Join us @NashvilleParentMag for lively insights, conversations and more.

BABY PAGES

BY CHRISTA HINES

HOW TO PICK A PEDIATRICIAN For peace of mind and for your infant’s good health, be smart and prepared when you start looking for a baby doctor. By the time your newborn is a toddler, he’ll only care about the lollipops and stickers at the pediatricians office. But before that time, if you’re expecting a baby, you’re wise to be on the hunt for a healthcare provider by your sixth month of pregnancy. Afterall, with today’s healthcare insurance the way it is, your pediatrician is going to be with you upwards of 20 years. During Baby’s first year, you’ll be spending quite a bit of time with your child’s healthcare provider. Take steps before your baby arrives to choose a doctor who you feel comfortable with and trust.

18 july 2021

nashvilleparent.com

When should you start the process? Anywhere between one and three months before your due date is an ideal time to start shopping around for a pediatrician or a family physician. Try not to wait until the last minute. “Once you go to the hospital, there’s a lot going on. You’ll be seeing a lot of doctors. You’ll be going through labor. It’s not something you want to decide off-the-cuff,” says pediatrician Aaron Mayer, D.O. When you arrive at the hospital to deliver your baby, you’ll be asked who you’ve selected for your child’s primary care doctor. They will then notify your baby’s physician, and he or she will provide a physical examination of your infant within 24 hours after delivery.

has obtained the designation of Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP), which means they are board certified in pediatrics and adhere to the AAP’s standards and guidelines.

Where to begin? “Honestly, I think consulting with friends and family is probably best. If your friends like their doctor, you are likely to find a good fit with them as well,” says Kallie Foss, M.D., FAAP. Make sure the recommended physicians are part of your health insurance network. Also check out area hospital

Pediatrician or family physician? Both practitioners are trained to provide quality healthcare for your family. Your choice will most likely boil down to personal preference and the rapport you have with a particular physician. Here are the primary differences between the two types of physicians: A family practice doctor is trained to provide healthcare to individuals at all stages of life, from newborn to senior. According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, family physicians train for three years in real-life clinical settings and are trained in all areas of medicine ranging from pediatrics and internal medicine to obstetrics. Physicians should be board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and licensed in the state in which they practice. A pediatrician specializes specifically in childhood conditions, diseases and treatment for patients from newborn to age 18. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), following medical school, a pediatrician-in-training completes three or more years of courses focused entirely on pediatrics. Seek a pediatrician who is licensed and

websites, which often feature doctors who are nearby and accepting new patients.

Schedule a prenatal visit Once you’ve got a list of two or three physicians, call and schedule a prenatal visit to help you get a feel for personalities and office environment. A face-toface appointment can help you get a sense of the office and nursing staff. Consider if they are courteous, warm and helpful? What is the overall feel of the clinic? Is it kid-friendly, clean and welcoming? “You don’t really know if the physician’s personality meshes with your family unless you speak with them in person,” Mayer says. “It’s important to do prenatal visits to see if the way they

nashvilleparent.com

act, the way they treat you, and the environment of the clinic fits with what you want for your family.”

Make a list of questions Now that you have prenatal appointments lined up, consider what issues are most important to you. For example, you might ask: • Who will see my baby in the hospital? • How soon after we leave the hospital should we see you? • What is the schedule for well-child checks and immunizations? • What can I expect during wellchild checks? • How long are the typical wait times at appointments? • How do you handle after-hours calls? • Which urgent care do you recommend? • What’s your availability for last minute appointments? • What kind of acute care do you provide? “If you’re having a boy, you might want to also ask about circumcision,” Foss says. “It would also be good to let the doctor know if you have had any complications during the pregnancy that may affect Baby after he is born.”

Evaluate the visit After the appointment, reflect on how you felt about the doctor and the practice: • Were your most pressing questions and concerns addressed? • Did you feel comfortable? • Did the doctor support or respect your opinion regarding issues that matter to you? • Did you feel listened to? • Did you feel rushed? • What was the office and support staff like? • What was the clinic environment like? • Was the location convenient? You Can Teach Your Kids to

parenting

embrace life! Want your kids to experience life as the grand adventure it is? In this era where talk of anxiety dominates, kids need the tools more than ever — and so do you — to grow a whole heart that can take on anything. By knowing your kids’ temperaments and then challenging them accordingly, you can help them learn to live life to the fullest.

Embrace Life By Making it an Adventure BY SUSAN DAY

W

hether you’re planning a trip to the zoo, sitting down with a bedtime story or heading off to the pediatric dentist, it’s up to you to show your kids how to live an adventurous, curiosity-filled life full of learning and exploration — and keeping your fears to a minimum. Ok, nobody sees heading off to the dentist as an adventure, but it doesn’t have to be a tearfully wrought battle, either. We all want our kids to have hopeful, optimistic outlooks, and in this era where pessimism and cynicism are so powerful — not to mention all of the talk about mental health and anxiety — fighting for your child’s well being is a battle worth waging. Now that COVID-19 is easing, it’s time to gift your kids with adventurous living. And yes, you have to own up to your part in this. We’ve learned by now that it’s not OK to be a helicopter mom or dad. It’s time to be stronger inwardly so your kids can learn how to make the most of their life journies. It’s time to pull back and let your kids take off on their own. Even if you’re still your kids’ primary playmate, it’s time to have an honest conversation with yourself and aim to find opportunities for your kids to take the lead. From birth, kids learn new skills rapidly as well as the confidence to use them. To thrive, kids need to trust in their own capabilities as well as learn how to rebound from failures. As they grow older, they need autonomy and a sense of individuality. You’re a good parent, so let’s go!

26 july 2021

Model bravery and capability to your children and they will learn from you. Also, turn mistakes and mishaps into helpful learning experiences so they won’t be afraid to fail.

1. JUST DO IT!

A lot of us put perceived limitations on ourselves and our kids when they are little. Of course special care needs to be taken to make sure children are safe — especially very young infants — but children are not glass figurines. All parents need to find their own comfort zone in raising kids, but also take note of what may be false limitations you are placing on yourself. Could you go for a hike with your infant? Could your toddler bike a mile or so? Yes and yes. When my first child was 6 weeks old, or even 6 months old, I could not imagine taking her camping. But I knew people who did it. In the beginning, you’re in survival mode with an infant — barely sleeping, always nursing, and so this mama wasn’t about to go camping. But a daily walk was possible, and that time outside meant everything to me. Starting kids young on the road to adventurism means that as they grow they will seek it out. My daughter first felt the ocean on her feet at 6 months old. Today, her sea legs are strong, she’s an avid swimmer and fisherwoman and she isn’t afraid of the water or think it’s weird to be near it or in it. Make the fun and interesting things that you want to spend your time doing the new normal for your kids. Children are extremely portable!

2. DON’T OVERTHINK IT

In order to accomplish point #1, it’s important to adopt the “just do it” mind set. When I had three kids under age 4, I wanted to take them all out walking, yet some mornings it felt like a huge ordeal. I remember one morning my best friend with two little girls said to me, “Don’t think about it, just do it!”

nashvilleparent.com

Loving my friend’s zest for life, I grabbed my 4-year-old girl, my 2-year-old boy and my 6-month-old son — everybody still in their PJs — and put them in the car and drove to a nearby park. We “hiked,” (the baby in a stroller), until he demanded to get out. We went a half mile or so, but that morning was awesome to just be out and on a trail with happy-to-behere kids and an I’m-glad-I-did-this-mom.

3. THE MORE YOU DO IT, THE EASIER IT WILL GET

Time and time again, when you want to go do something fun away from home, you will forget something. But if you keep on heading out, you will develop a routine and rhythm that will make it easier each time. You will learn what gear you do and don’t need. With kids, you will always need snacks and drinks. Each trip or outing is not going to be perfect or even enjoyable. Some days the kids will cry, not want to participate or keep running off. But that happens if you stay home, too. So don’t let it stop you. Know that other days you will get to show your daughter a butterfly up close or an ant hill at work or a nest of Robin eggs or get to see your son hike up a mountain for the first time.

4. ADJUST YOUR MINDSET

One of the easiest ways to incorporate adventure into your kids’ lives is to create it out of everyday experiences. With the right mindset, everything can be an adventure. With a cynical mindset, everything can be a drag. Just on a walk, look at the weeds growing on your street. Check for bugs and sounds. Look for planes. Demonstrate curiosity to your kids and remember, adventure doesn’t always

need to be conquering the highest peak — it’s about doing new things. Because guess what? Everything your kid does is a new experience.

5. LOWER EXPECTATIONS

Adventure outings with kids require you to slow down. It can take an hour to hike one mile. As adult adventurers, we are often focused on getting to where we are going (fastest route from point A to point B). Kids don’t operate that way. Toddlers don’t walk in straight lines. Nor do they know your “plan.” So take a breath and enjoy your kids’ natural curiosities. Isn’t that one of the reasons you are out there with them in the first place? To stoke their internal inquisitiveness and enjoyment of doing things? Sometimes forget about reaching the destination and go dig in the dirt with your kids.

6. HICCUPS

With kids in tow, don’t bite off more than you can chew. Know that kids often get tired, hungry, and typically cranky at a certain time of day. For instance, don’t drag little ones through an art gallery at lunchtime. Plan accordingly. If you decide to go kayaking with your 4-year-old, know that he WILL have a meltdown at the absolute furthest point up the river. It’s almost certain. It’s important for you to know also that kids are experiencing their own challenges and that sometimes that is hard. There will be tears, and that might be OK. Adjust your mindset to consider these as opportunities of growth and learning, and

guide your kids through it without giving up. Adventuring with kids gets easier as they get older, but soon enough, because of you, they will be on adventures of their own with their friends. And they will be skilled leaders who know exactly what to do! Susan Day is editor of this publication and a mom of four amazing kids.

Know Your Child Temperament is the unique early set of personality traits that show up in infancy. Your child will likely hold onto these traits for his entire life, although life experiences will shape his personality, too. The better you understand your kids, the easier it will be for you to best challenge them toward becoming open, flexible and adventurous in life. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, there are at least nine specific characteristics to consider about your children related to their temperaments. Activity level: how much they engage in physical activity Regularity: how consistently they eat, sleep, use the bathroom How they approach situations: whether they jump into new situations without looking back or take longer to be comfortable Adaptability: how easily they can adjust to new situations Intensity: their energy level

parenting Mood: whether they tend to be pleasant or less friendly Attention span: how long they can attend to a task Distractibility: how easily they can be distracted Sensory threshold: the amount of stimulation required for a child to respond

+ Parent Without Fear You’ve probably noticed kids who are bold and fearless as well as those who are timid like mice. In the book, Parenting without Fear, author Paul J. Donahue, Ph.D. provides calm and reasoned parenting tools for modeling how to get past your own fears in order to teach your kids to be independent, to persevere and to take control of their lives as they grow. Some of the tools Donahue covers include: 1. Lead by Example Guard against saying things that may stop your child from doing things and show him the healthy way to be. Push yourself out of your own comfort zone by trying and doing new things that will challenge you and in watching you, challenge your kids. 2. Say, “Yes” More A lot of parents go straight to “No” when their kids ask to do something. Short of permitting something truly dangerous — and in line with knowing your child — try saying “Yes” more. It’s fun, it builds trust and it creates connection. 3. Know That We Learn From Our Mistakes Life is an exercise in mishaps — we have to learn from what goes “wrong.” If you can understand that mistakes are not to be feared, you can encourage them to try new things and when they DO make mistakes, help them find the lessons within them. 4. Be There for Them In all aspects of life, your child needs to know that he can depend on you in all situations. You need to be there for your kids emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Just know that adults can pass their own fears onto kids, and that it’s not helpful to do so.

Teaching kids to embrace life is about giving them the self confidence they need to try new things.

TIPS IF YOU GO: • PLAN ON A LATE NIGHT Drive-Ins offer double features. Even if you pull away after the first feature, you’ll be getting home late. • KIDS CAN WEAR PAJAMAS Then, plop them right into bed when you get home. • PACK FUN SNACKS Or pay a pretty bundle at the concession stand. Pop your own popcorn, candy, & pack a cooler with cold drinks. • BRING CHAIRS, PILLOWS & THROWS Even on a warm night you can get chilled sitting outside. • PACK JUMPER CABLE (JUST IN CASE) When you play the sound through your car radio, batteries can drain fast. Outta School Spot camp is for school-age youth when school is out. Don’t see the date you need? We offer custom camps just for your needs. We need at least 10 campers to put on a custom camp for you. All of our camps have great instructors, small groups, games, crafts, swimming (ages 5 - 12), inflatable obstacle courses, field house play time, and of course great gymnastics/tumbling. Our camps are not gymnastics focused, but more of an active fun and fitness camp. Our campers have the opportunity to participate in many different activities and events. They will have a fantastic time!

We believe that providing acceleration as well as challenging, inquiry-based educational opportunities, best serve the intellectual needs of gifted children; that being able to work alongside true academic peers provides a sense of community and belonging that helps to meet the social and emotional needs of gifted children; and that crafting authentic creative learning experiences best allows gifted students to develop their full capacities as thinkers, as problem-solvers and as compassionate people.
