DAD BEAT By Michael W. Aldrich

Let your kids fail.

R

ecently, I was watching my 2-year-old try to eat a bowl of oatmeal on his own (quite unsuccessfully, I might add). For some reason, the only way he would allow the spoon to enter his mouth was upside down, and when I tried to turn it right side up, he went ballistic. So I sat there watching him desperately scoop up oatmeal bites and slowly bring them up to his mouth while each bite fell to the floor (or on him) just before hitting his mouth. It was one of those parenting moments that’s sad but also kind of hilarious — like when they give themselves their first haircut; or when they want to show everybody that “boo-boo” on their middle finger. Knowing when to help them and when to not is what we’re talking about here (and you’d be surprised how much it should be the latter). It’s a scary concept. As parents, we want to see our kids succeed in everything they do — whether it’s acing their science homework, making the varsity softball team or simply making a sandwich without smearing peanut butter and jelly all over the kitchen. I get it. Watching our children fail is one of the hardest things we have to do. It makes us feel helpless. We worry about everything from their self-esteem and social development to their future success. We start out doing EVERYTHING for them. All they had to do was eat, sleep and poop — we handled the rest. But it’s different now. They get older and you constantly find yourself wanting to assist them in everything they do. You find yourself asking, “is this best for them, or will this just hold them back?” To learn self-sufficiency, kids need to occasionally dust themselves off (literally and figuratively) without your help. “Most parents know what their children are capable of but step in to make things easier for them,” says Sheri Noga, the author of Have the Guts to Do It Right: Raising Grateful and Responsible Children in an Era of Indulgence. Failure is an opportunity for growth. Remember, long-term benefits — a teenager who knows how to do their own laundry, for example — trump momentary discomfort. Before you rush in to help with any physical task, ask yourself, “Is my child in real danger?” Then — and this applies to other challenges, like the social studies poster due tomorrow — think about whether your child has the necessary skills (dexterity and balance) or simply adequate sleep and a snack. Yes? Time to back off and see what happens. As for me, I think I can handle cleaning up a few dropped oatmeal bites until he figures it out.

MASK OR NO MASK? “I would love for my child to wear a mask in school however, at her age, the mask mostly stays in her mouth or is being played with by her hands. I truly think she’s getting more germs in her mouth while wearing one than she would without one.” Jessica Bridges “Masks. My children are not vaccinated therefore they need to wear a mask. I will not risk their lives. They are too precious to me.” Jenna Woodard “Kid ‘A’ is unknowingly exposed to COVID while at an unmasked school playing with Kid ‘B,’ from a completely masked school. My child was the only one who had to quarantine from class/school because they all wear masks and maintain the required distance while inside their school. Galileo Preparatory Academy Opens Jan., 2022

M

ark Claypool and John McLaughlin — education industry veterans with decades of experience — are excited to announce the creation of Galileo Preparatory Academy (GPA), a learner-centric, personalized private school that will open its first campus in January, 2022 serving students in grades six through 12. The school — currently under construction at the corner of Moores Lane and Franklin Road in Franklin — will bring together traditional in-person instruction, virtual learning and technologyfocused coursework. Co-founders Claypool and McLaughlin collaborated on the Galileo Preparatory Academy concept after years of working in education. “My entire career has centered on providing children with the tools they need to have a successful life,” Claypool says. “With GPA, we are reinventing learning for students in grades six through 12. Our first campus will open in Williamson County, and we will open multiple locations across the Southeast by fall, 2022.”

Galileo Preparatory Academy will offer personalized learning, making it possible for students to begin at any time of the year. GPA will offer a subscription model that is inclusive of all technology and learning materials rather than a traditional tuition-based model. GPA’s curriculum will consist of four pillars: Core (English, math, social studies, sciences); Focus (graphic arts, design and more); Dialogues (problem solving through the arts); and Community (improving the common good). “Galileo is a unique schooling experience for students and their families,” McLaughlin says. “Our team has worked hard to ensure we are providing something that is not found anywhere else in the state. There is

nowhere else a student and their family are able to have so much control and freedom in their schooling.” Claypool and McLaughlin have impressive bios betwen them. To cover just a bit, Claypool created Educational Services of America (now ChanceLight), in 1999 and built the company to more than 170 schools and programs in 20 states. McLaughlin has more than four decades of educational entrepreneurship experience. The first school he created, Benton Hall, has been in existence for 40-plus years. The two men are joined in their efforts by John Bergstrom, an experienced early-stage adviser and investor in education, technology and software businesses. In addition, Tim Nicholson, a seasoned and early investor in early education is a GPA investor and board member. Nashville Parent will bring you more exclusive coverage of Galileo Preparatory in future issues. For now, to learn more and to request information, go to galileopreparatory.com.

HOMESCHOOLING Your Preschooler

Kids between ages 3 and 5 are always exploring, always thinking and always creating and wondering. If you have one of these at home, get engaged in their love of learning. Homeschooling a preschooler is not hard, but it takes time and patience — like any other aspect of parenting!

18 september 2021

nashvilleparent.com

G

ot a preschooler on your hands? Are you feeling the pressure to get her prepared for kindergarten next fall? Relax. Teaching preschool at home can be easy, rewarding and one of the greatest things you can do for your child. But because you truly do want to formalize a plan, let’s think of preschooling your child as homeschooling. Since you’re interested in teaching your preschooler, you’re probably already doing it, but just need a bit more awareness of things like life skills, routines and basic academics. The great news is, there are plenty of ways to integrate these three things into your day with your child, remembering that play, exploration and discovery are the most important lessons for little ones while they are young. According to Caring for Your Baby and Young Child, the essential parenting guide from the American Academy of Pediatrics, “the crucial factor that determines whether a student will do well or poorly in school is not how aggressively he was pushed early on, but rather his own enthusiasm for learning.” So your goal is to spark a love of learning in your child — easy! Let’s focus on 3-year-old kids, because that’s the age that a little one is ready for preschool.

Life Skills

Little ones depend upon you a lot for their daily upkeep, but at age 3 you can start working with them on things they can do for themselves. Your job is to look at EVERYTHING as an opportunity for teaching and learning. You can encourage independence in your child by teaching a process then guiding them through it. For instance: Hand-washing: You can’t just say, “Go wash your hands,” you have to teach each step: 1) turn on water 2) take one pump of soap 3) rub hands together on both sides 4) rinse soap off hands 5) turn water off 6) use a towel or paper towel to dry hands 7) return towel or throw away paper one Other life skills you can teach (as a process) to a preschooler include:

• Dressing and Undressing: Young kids require some help getting in and out of clothes for a while, but teaching them how from an early age gets them on the right path for wearing clothes neatly and learning to match. • Tying shoelaces: This is tricky for little ones, so make it a fun activity. Watch a video on the Bunny Ear Method on YouTube to get started. • Brushing hair: Let your preschooler try combing her hair first and then you can fix it if you aren’t satisfied with the results. • Self-control: Beginning at age 3, little ones can begin learning self-control through game play. Use these games: “Red Light, Green Light;” “Freeze Dance;” “Simon Says;” “Ring Around the Rosie;” “Mother, May I?” and others. • Putting away things: Encourage your child to put things back where they belong so he can learn order. Picking up after yourself is important when living with others. You can use baskets in your child’s room to help make the learning easier.

Routines

Teaching a little one that there is a time and place for everything is a big lesson. In raising a learner, preschoolers can know that they eat breakfast then do a few morning chores. After that, you can have some loosely structured play and learning times with a plan for rest or nap as well. Routines aren’t meant to be unpleasant; routines are meant to provide what we can look forward to, so routines lead to rituals, and rituals build closeness. If your child knows that after brushing his teeth you will meet him at his bed for story time, that makes brushing his teeth easier to do. Remember also that routines require consistency, and consistency helps children feel secure and aware of what’s happening around them.

Academics

Preschoolers learn by doing. Once they get into more formalized education (in kindergarten), you will be able to identify your child’s learning style and be able to tell how your child learns best. But the main thing is, play is their job and education during the preschool years. That said, here are the things your future kindergarten teacher will want your child to know once he lands in her classroom:

• Being polite: Saying, “Hello,” “Please,” “Thank you,” “Excuse me.” Practice with examples and make it fun.

ou feel like you’re running around with your head cut off, right? As if you can’t squeeze one more thing into your day or you’ll explode? But then, once your kids are asleep in bed ... oh, the guilt! You stand in the bedroom doorway, promising to be better, do better for your kids.

First, ditch the guilt. You are far too hard on yourself and you’re a good parent for even standing there in the doorway self reflecting! But also, it’s hard. It’s hard day in and day out with everything your kids have to do on top of everything YOU have to do. But time is whisking by and truly, one of the most important parts of being a parent is really

knowing your kids. That said, you can get past the non-answers your kids provide with a little effort during meals or in the car. We’ve got terrific questions that will stimulate your kids to talk. Pull’em out and get conversations started — and get into it. Let conversation flow around what you ask. There are no rules here besides no teasing! (please turn the page)

PARENTING

By Sandra Wallis

Don’t Worry So Much About Learning Loss. Kids Must Not Be

pressure cookers!

I

Many kids internalize the implied judgment of their teachers and the anxiety of their parents, but to what end?

f the pandemic was good for anything, it’s that we stopped putting academic pressure on our kids. But now, with all of the talk of learning loss and what kids missed and are missing, the pressure’s back. Maybe the pressure’s not so much coming from

parents (we did learn from the USC admission’s cheating scandal, yes?), but it’s back for the kids. They may not be as over-scheduled as they were pre-pandemic, but you’d better believe they’re feeling like they have to work — and hard. Tennessee’s new 360 reading initiative has put pressure into the living

rooms of our youngest kids: You must read by third grade or else! But let’s not forget that kids put enough pressure on themselves in the classroom. Either they understand lessons or they don’t, and many kids raise their hands even when they don’t understand just hoping the teacher will (please turn the page)

PRESSURE think they DO understand, but not pick on them. It’s a risk they’re willing to take. The pressure to do well in school is on all of the kids. The ones who are struggling with academics are also struggling in their heads and the smartest ones are always at it to stay ahead. To be something. To matter. To stand out, somehow. All kids are different, but all human beings are not. We are similar in many ways in that we’re easily hurt, easily discouraged, easily torn apart, especially when we’re young. Childhood is fleeting, and none of us get to have a say in the ups and downs that will come our way in life. So perhaps it’s good to gain a little perspective.

When kids measure themselves against unrealistically high standards, happiness takes a hit and so does good mental health.

PARENTS WHO OVERDO THE ACADEMIC PRESSURE Doctor, lawyer, indian chief. Remember? We all dream of the outstanding futures we want for our children then ever so slowly the gifts of our young reveal themselves. Some kids are average, some kids are intellectually gifted. No matter, they all have a chance at happiness in life, yes? But when parents place exceedingly high expectations on their kids’ endeavors, they usher in anxiety without even realizing it. Pushing your kids to succeed may seem like a good idea, but it can also have a profound effect on a young mind. Parents who overdo academic pressure over do other forms of pressure too, staying on top of their kids no matter what, in the name of success. “There’s a constant monitoring of where the kid is and what they are doing, all with the intent of preventing something happening and becoming a barrier to the child’s success,” says Laura Hamilton, author of Parenting to a Degree: How Family Matters for College and Beyond (University of Chicago Press; 2016). And many parents with high expectations feel that “raising the bar” for their kids is the right way to go. It’s true if it’s realistic for your child. The problem comes in when the bar is set unrealistically high. KIDS WHO PUT TOO MUCH PRESSURE ON THEMSELVES Parents are often so relieved when they have a kid who’s happy to do homework, study for tests, hit the books. It’s wonderful when a kid is concerned about his grades, but some kids can take it so far they get headaches, stomach pains, anxiety attacks and even depression. According to a report by the Child Mind Institute, an independent nonprofit dedicated to changing the lives of kids with mental health issues, one in three teenagers between the ages of 13 and 18 experience anxiety disorders related to the culture of their lives. Author Madeline Levine (Ready or Not: Preparing Our Kids to Thrive in an Uncertain and Rapidly Changing World, (Harper; 2020)), says added pressures have come to kids from social media and technology where everyone’s “incredible” lives are on full display. Levine refers to a “compulsive comparison,” where kids on social media

26 september 2021

or in the classroom are subject to comparing their successes to their peers. Then, along with comparing themselves, plenty of kids deal with sleep depravation, sports or other activities in addition to schoolwork — and a feeling of not being heard by their parents. “I’ve been a psychologist for 35 years,” Levine says. “No child has ever come into my office and said, ‘You know, my parents just listen too much.” When kids measure themselves against unrealistically high standards, happiness takes a hit and and so does good mental health. You can let out some of the “steam” your child may be feeling by monitoring from the sidelines and creating an open dialogue. The worst thing you can do is to be silent. HELP YOUR KIDS WITH THE FOLLOWING: • Beating themselves up over mistakes Remind your child that no one is perfect and that even the brightest, smartest kids make mistakes, Levine says. See if you can get your kid to understand the idea of self compassion and of being kind to yourself. Studies show that kids who are gentle to themselves cut themselves a little slack when they mess up, but also know how to confront their problem head on with determination to try again. • Thinking everyone else is so perfect The facade that everyone else has a perfect life is overwhelming, even to adults. In fact, a four-year-old Status of Mind study from the Royal Society for Public Health in the U.K. showed that Instagram — while beneficial for selfexpression — is the most detrimental social networking app for young people’s mental health followed by Snapchat. Teach your kids to push through the haze of photoshopped perfectionism and to see what really matters in life. Individualism is your child’s gift, no one else’s, and that’s what matters most. • Viewing setbacks as failures When you’re a 16-year-old kid standing around on the sidelines and never getting any playing time on the football team, you can start to think you’re probably no good at foot-

nashvilleparent.com

ball. Same thing goes in the classroom if you keep getting “Ds” in science. The truth is, kids need to hear that there is no such thing as failure and that life is a journey we all must step our way through, work at, and learn from. For anything we do, we need resiliency to face life, good or bad. • Expecting quick results Again, because of technology advances, kids are into immediate gratification. They can know their grades instantly (so can parents), so if a grade isn’t what a kid hoped it would be — or needed it to be — he can have a mental decline all in the course of a quick moment. Teach your kids that not everything is instant and that the value of waiting and reflecting and understanding what happened is important. By keeping the inward pressure they feel in perspective they can learn to work through it. THE HAPPY MIDDLE In wanting your kids to do well in school and in life, it’s pretty important not to be over the top about anything your child is attempting to achieve. “Once we take out the insane amount of pressure our children are facing, we can allow them to enjoy their childhood in a healthy and wholesome manner,” says Shefali Tsabary, a clinical psychologist and author of The Conscious Parent (Namaste; 2012). Tsabary says it’s the parents who need to back off of the kids because everything goes back to the parent. “By turning inward and checking on your own emotional temperature before unleashing expectations on your children, parents naturally begin to connect more and more with their children in an atmosphere of unconditional support and care,” she says. One great way to move forward is to recognize the difference between support and pressure. Pressure becomes a problem when it is relentless, says Tsabary, and when it is pushing toward achievement. Support means to recognize your child for who he is and to accept him. “Parents can be overinvolved in the wrong things and under-involved in the right things,” says Levine. So when you push your child to achieve, you may be cutting your child off from something he loves more and on his own terms. If you can spend time together just being together and without discussing grades or performance of anything they do at all, your child will understand that you love them for who they are, not what they can or cannot do. Think back: Isn’t that what you wanted from your parents, too? “Kids want to please their parents,” says Eileen KennedyMoore, co-author of Smart Parenting for Smart Kids (JosseyBass; 2011). “That sense of connection is powerfully motivating.” Praise your kids when you mean it, but be careful about how you praise; focus on effort and growth more than outcome. “Also, when they hit the home run or land the lead in the school play, or ace a test, be careful that your pleasure doesn’t swamp theirs,” Kennedy-Moore says. “We want the excitement to be theirs, so it isn’t all about us.”

NO PRESSURE!

D

on’t push, but you can help your child to try. Ever so gently, feed him some easy habits that lead to success.

• MAKE A PLAN TO PARTICIPATE Teachers stress participation all of the time. Help your child learn to ask a question in class by play acting at home. Stress that it’s OK to be wrong — being wrong is another way of learning. Tell him there are no dumb questions and work with him on asking questions until he feels good about it. • AIM TO BE ORGANIZED All kids struggle with keeping on top of everything and many just drag everything along in a loaded backpack. Set aside time to ask your kid how you can help and also share the tremendous value there is in writing everything down. • GET AHEAD Everybody procrastinates, too. Teach your child about goal-setting and how helpful it is to study ahead of time in small chunks for tests. • GET ALL THE POINTS YOU CAN Sometimes just turning in homework gives a kid points. In any case, it’s OK to ask your child if he’s done his homework or not, but maybe more helpful is to ask, “Did you turn your homework in?” • ABOVE ALL ELSE, READ Teachers assign reading all of the time but that doesn’t mean kids do it. It’s OK to ask your child to read in a chair — read something; anything for 20 minutes a day. That’s not pressure, that’s smart! • ENCOURAGE YOUR KIDS It’s surprising how few parents will say, “Good job!” or, “Way to go on that!” Your kids are hungry for this kind of support, so look for ways to give it and make it genuine. THINGS TO DO SPECIAL!

TENNESSEE CAMPING! A crackling fire at night, early morning walks and NO electronics! How’s that for family togetherness? BY MICHAEL W. ALDRICH

FIRST THINGS FIRST

SURVIVAL TIPS

• Do a practice run first! A child’s first camping trip (or an adult’s first camping trip with kids) is an exciting and sometimes overwhelming thing. Don’t drive for hours to find out that your little one has a hard time sleeping in a tent and is up all night. Do a few practice runs in the backyard so that your kids know a little of what to expect.

• Think simple. One or two things a day will suffice. Trying to do too much can easily overwhelm everyone. • Just let them play. Plan lots of downtime in your day so your kids can just enjoy being outside. Kids require very few things to make them happy. A few toys that are great to have in the camping arsenal are buckets, balls and gloves and Frisbees.

• When you’re ready, reserve a campsite online. The standardized rates range from $8 (four people) per night for primitive sites up to $25 (four people) for premium sites. Typical campsites with water and electric are $20 per night for four people; $1 each additional person.

• Don’t stress. Camping with kids almost never goes exactly as planned – relax. Your attitude will rub off on the kids. • Go for a nature walks. Children can have fun pointing out the different leaves, insects, tracks on the ground, vegetation, etc.

• When you arrive at your site, walk the boundaries with the kids so they won’t wander out of site. Give them landmarks to look for, as in, “You can go from that group of rocks to this tree, and stay away from the road.” If they know their boundaries from the beginning, you can go about preparing your campsite.

• Just stuff all the dirty laundry into one large bag. • Consider bringing a potty seat for toddlers.

• Take advantage of the family fun things to do in the parks like hiking, fishing, swimming, geocaching, boating and more.

40 september 2021

• Pack fun food items, too — (kids love those mini boxes of cereal).
