DAY BYDAY I Remember Chad

T

he first time I met him, I thought, boy, what a nerd. He was drenched in cologne, sporting a three-piece suit and tie, and his smiling demeanor bubbled over with enthusiasm. He’d graduated from Belmont with honors and he was helping numerous outlets in town with publicity while working at Dillards, but what he really, really, really wanted was to edit magazines. He’d heard about the editorial job we had available and was determined to get it. Me? I was breaking my neck by producing Nashville Parent on my own with a 4-month-old in my arms and a preschooler who needed picking up every day by 2. I loved (and love) my job, but my work load had become ridiculous. My husband (and publisher) told me that even for my work ethic (I’m a Red Hen), it was high time to bring on more help. Our offices were downtown on Seventh Avenue South then, and my tiny editorial office had room for two desks and a baby changing table. So far, the second editorial desk was just heaping with folders and books — but I had no spare time to interview for the job. One morning, one of our sales’ girls came up to me all excited. “Susan! I met this great guy at the Dillard’s cologne bar — he sold me some Aramis — and I told him about the job! I think he’s popping in to see you today!” And here he was. Chad Young. He knew I was swamped, and he knew many other candidates wanted this gig and that I was soon to make a choice. He was obviously skilled, but he won my heart when he asked, “May I hold the baby for you?” What I thought was a nerd on first impression was actually a very warm, nice man and great overall guy. He was engaging, fun, helpful, inquisitive, interested and interesting, smart, witty, talented and tenacious. I’d never met anyone who liked to work as hard as I do, and I’d never met anyone so obsessed by details. Chad became my right arm, but also my left and both of my feet, too. He ran circles around me to help make every little thing we dreamt up happen in these pages. And Chad was a solid writer and editor. He was eager to help and make a difference in our community and he saw the need — the enormous need — to give people with children ideas and ways to connect them up with local happenings. He also became my partner in crime. We loved sneaking out for lunch at Arnold’s. We took hilarious field trips searching for photo shoot locations. We ducked into openings sight unseen. And theater? He loved it as much as I do, and we often spun our chairs around to chat about local goings on, holding nothing back, and we’d go over everything and anything that mattered to the local area whether it was attractions, a new venue, a terrible performance, or something so outstanding it needed to be mentioned. So I’m just really, really sad to tell you that Chad passed away recently after battling diabetes and other issues. I am stripped of my best pairing here at the magazine, but I promised Chad I will find someone to carry his torch. And I will. For now, please turn to page 49 to read how Chad impacted our community with his giving heart. And if you knew Chad, feel free to send some words and we’ll print them. I will really miss Chad Young, but I will keep looking forward for both of us. It’s what he would have wanted me to do.

he year was 2011. I was 26, and had just given birth to my second son. Those days are a blur, and not just because having two kiddos under 3 is hard. Although yes, having two kiddos under 3 is hard. In my case, I had also been up way too late a few nights earlier (because #nobodycansleepat9monthspregnant) and had discovered our laundry room on fire. It’s a story about how bingeing Gilmore Girls actually saved our home and probably our lives too, but we can chat about that over hot tea one day when the world opens back up. Just know I’m team Gilmore Girls and our house didn’t burn down. However, we did have to move into a hotel and I promise you, that was excrutiating for all of us (and most likely for the people in the neighboring rooms, too). Nobody wants to bring a newborn home to a hotel. Promise.

In particular, I remember one night when we felt utterly hopeless. We were still trembling from the trauma of the week’s events, and we noticed something wasn’t quite right with our sweet Sawyer. He was jittery, and physically trembling. The birth of our first son had also been frightening, involving postbirth seizures for Mama and a NICU stay for Baby, and by now we were so tired and everything seemed so complicated. It had been a roller coaster of a three years. Not another health scare. Please Lord. But Sawyer’s symptoms got worse, and right before we were about to literally go crazy, we remembered through the fog: oh yeah, the doctors put him on a medicine for eating issues. Maybe that had something to do with it. We rescued the little insert with too-small writing from the trash and started reading. Sure enough, Sawyer was in the 1% who experienced tremors as a side effect. We stopped the meds, and he stopped shaking. Whew. Before we knew it, it was time to get the baby his shots, and I remember feeling caught in yet another whirlwind, with no time to ask questions and without even knowing what the questions might be. Instead, we operated on a blind trust that we were doing the right thing. My own insecurities, the pressure of our kids’ health issues, the trauma of our house fire, lack of education, lack of time — all of that fed into it. And while our situation might have been unique, I know many new parents can probably relate on some level. During pregnancy, it seems like everything goes so slowly, and then, with your baby’s birth, you’re suddenly in the middle of it — the first few months just fly by, with little time in between spit-up and sleepless nights to think things through and figure out what is best for your family. My kids are a little older now (I currently get to use the middle-school mom hashtag on Insta), but do you know what I can’t imagine? What it’s like for new parents in this very moment of history. In the middle of a global pandemic, facing situations like we did, but with an unprecedented gloom hanging over everything. Even ordinary decisions get complicated and weighty: Do we stay at home, missing well check-ups and vaccinations, or do we risk taking our babies out for an appointment? Check-ups are vital for a child’s overall well being, and while some health-care nurses and doctors are able to utilize telemedicine, it just can’t replace thorough, physical face-to- face examinations.

DON’T NEGLECT GENERAL HEALTH Overall in the U.S., well check-ups are down about 50 percent, and many providers worry about the vaccinations that are being missed. “We should not be so distracted by COVID-19 that we neglect our general health,” the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) reports. “Immunization should be routine — otherwise, we may soon see outbreaks of vaccinepreventable diseases in the U.S. and around the world. Combined with another wave of COVID-19, the impact could be devastating for both individual families and the health-care system at-large.” Here in Nashville, nobody knows how many vaccinations are being missed while families stick close to home, says Elizabeth Williams, M.D., assistant professor of pediatrics at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. “Of course, we understand that parents are scared about coming to the doctor during the pandemic, but it is very important to keep children up-to-date on their own vaccination schedule to avoid an epidemic of a vaccine-preventable disease on top of the COVID pandemic,” says Williams. Global data tell us “that otherwise healthy children are not developing severe illness from the COVID-19 virus, but we know that children DO develop severe illness, including death, from the diseases that childhood vaccines prevent.” So don’t let fear keep you from making and keeping appointments, Williamson says, who points out that Vanderbilt and its satellite clinics are taking every measure possible to keep facilities clean and ensure patient safety, including phone triaging, separating patients with COVID-like symptoms, extra cleaning, and more.

CONSIDER TELEHEALTH In addition, you can consider a telehealth visit if you have questions about vaccinations or health concerns that don’t require a physical examination. Perhaps the biggest fear of health-care providers is an outbreak of measles, which Williams says is potentially much more harmful to children than COVID. More than 1,200 cases of measles were reported in the U.S. in 2019 alone. “Up to nine out of 10 people who lack immunity and are exposed to measles will become infected,” reports the NFID. “In the U.S., about one in five who get measles will be hospitalized, and up to three out of every 1,000 people with measles will die, even with the best care.” Recent studies have shown that vaccination rates have declined from 2009 to 2018 as some parents have become more hesitant about vaccines. “As families grapple with vaccination

SMART PARENT AVOID A BACKLOG Delayed vaccinations during COVID-19 can also create a backlog for students entering kindergarten or the 7th grade, when updated immunization forms are required. With social-distancing orders easing and people starting to feel more comfortable getting out, we may see a mad rush to pediatrician offices and clinics. “Pediatric practices have not been in a situation like the current pandemic,” Williams says, “so it is very difficult to predict fears and questions, one thing is absolutely sure: Their deci-

Just-Right Toddler Parties

20 june 2020

nashvilleparent.com

TODDLER PARTY GAMES

HOSTING TODDLERS? NOW READ THIS! Understanding your little one’s needs and interests at this tender time in his development can help you plan something fun and calm.

Note: Social distancing guidelines recommend that you keep your party to under 10 tots.

I

TREASURE HUNT: Designate space for hiding “treasures,” like small toys, candy or anything age-appropriate and provide fun clues to “help” the little ones find the treasure. Promote fun and keep the tots happy.

GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT

PAINTING: Remember to ask guests to bring an old shirt to wear over their outfit. Cover the ground with old sheets and dropcloths. Provide paper, paints and easy templates.

t’s time to amp up your creativity skills and make your toddler’s birthday work. You don’t have to pull out the stops — careful not to overwhelm — and remember, it’s not easy social distancing with 2 - 5 year olds. A successful birthday for toddlers is definitely possible though — in your backyard or at a local park. If there’s ever been a time for thinking outside of the box, it is now. Bear in mind: toddlers want two things: fun learning and to stay busy.

In my opinion as a mom, toddlers are the coolest part of the human population. They are in the intricate phase of soaking up information, grappling with fine motor skills, testing boundaries, becoming expressive and developing personality. Your primary focus should be on keeping your guests safe as they explore the party around them. Meanwhile, they are like free-spirited, fearless beings who will keep you on the edge of your seat. So with planning your toddler’s birthday party, it’s important to remember that toddlers are experiencing just as much emotional development as they are cognitive growth. Take a deep breath before taking on any toddler-related project; it is very likely that one minute a toddler will appear delighted, and the next minute it may seem as if his entire world is crashing down. Mood swings are totally the norm. According to Kidcentraltn.com (a site that helps Tennessee families connect with important information and resources for children) there are many reasons why toddlers will “act out.” Emotional ups and downs are related to toddlers feeling confused and/or frustrated by a situation. When young children experience ‘big feelings,’ they often do not have the language needed to express their worries or fears. You will need to be extra observant of all the toddlers at your party to keep things steady. Since toddlers react emotionally, keep your guest count small, and invite moms or dads to come, too. If there’s an emotional snafu, your toddler guest will need comforting. Plan on an hourand-a-half party. That’s plenty for merriment without meltdown. Remember that toddlers are like puppies: they don’t need much to get excited. And they don’t need a huge play space. Have a few assorted toddler snacks like goldfish and fresh fruit cut into pieces, juice boxes, and of course, a cake or cupcakes and some ice cream. Keep decorations simple, such as balloons and party blowers and provide a small party favor at the end for your toddler to hand out. Knowing that toddlers can have swift mood swings and that they require lots of attention and exploration can help you as you plan. Also, remember that the way you react to little children can make or break the toddler fun, so put your party hat on gently. Children under the age of 5 rely on trusted adults to co-regulate. Be present and close by, observe and respond with a calm tone of voice, and be ready to offer choices when possible. Now you’re ready to host your toddler party!

MUSICAL CHAIRS: Music is great for toddlers’ sensory and it will liven up your party. Use fun songs for musical chairs. The number of chairs used is always one short of the total number of children participating and decreases as kids are bumped out of the game when the music stops.

BALLOON TOSS: An outside activity, kids love tossing jiggly balloons to each other, and it’s oh-so-fun to watch them pop! JELL-O MASH: Prepare a bowl of Jell-O for each guest, and have them place assorted inanimate objects in their bowl. Ask kids what it feels like. Encourage them to compare how one object feels from another. Toddlers love to make a mess and use their hands. PUPPET SHOW: It’s time to go old school and to bring imaginations to life. Draw faces on brand-new pairs of socks, or, find affordable hand puppets online. Perform a show with Q&As, and allow the toddlers to touch the puppets at the conclusion of the show.

Kid Stations

R

Don’t fuss any more about all of this home time, structure it for the kids and get precious time for yourself!

eady to lose your mind with all of this time at home? Join the club! But, it doesn’t take long for kids to start suffering from Too Much Togetherness, too, picking fights with each other and badgering you for screen time. Your kids need some space from each other, and you need some alone time. Let me introduce you to a tool that

helps me (and my four kids) not only survive, but actually enjoy extended time at home. I call it Kid Stations, and it’s really easy to implement. Every day we’re home — usually after lunch — I set up a series of activities around the house, and my kids rotate through them individually. They get a break from each other, and since they’re rotating every 20 minutes or so, it’s nonstop, learning fun for them. For me, it’s almost one-and-a-half hours of peace (please turn the page)

SOLUTIONS to enjoy or to get something done around the house that needs doing. It’s a win for all of us. When you see how simple and effective Kid Stations are at giving everyone space from each other and yet still keeping things fun, they’ll become your favorite activity during these weeks of social distancing. Here’s how to make stations work, plus a list of suggested stations:

KID STATIONS! CRAFTS STATION Plan for a specific craft from Pinterest or just set out a wide variety of art supplies and let them go wild.

EDUCATIONAL SCREEN-TIME STATION

How to Do It 1.

Pick three-to-four stations, depending on how many kids you have, and how much time you want to fill. Plan for at least the same number of stations as you have kids. I have four kids, so I typically do four stations.

2.

Decide on logistics and write out a schedule. Decide how long each station will last, where it will take place, and which child will start where. I suggest 20 minutes for each station, and spreading them out into different rooms.

3. Write out a schedule and show it to the kids; rearrange as desired.

4. Send your kids to their assigned stations and set a timer.

5.

Enjoy your quiet time. You get to choose whether to do something fun for yourself or to get something done around the house.

6.

When the timer goes off, call out, “Time to switch!” And remind each kid which station to go to next. (Just move down the list of stations to keep it simple.)

7.

Repeat until your kids have rotated through all of the stations.

Tips! If you have a little one napping, use stations for the big kids during naptime / If your kids are young, start with 15-minute stations and gradually increase the time / Tweak the stations for your kids to fit their preferences

24 june 2020

Let the little ones play on websites or apps like ABCYa!, Starfall, or PBS Kids. The big kids can do activities on Nova, Cool Math Games or Khan Academy.

GAMES STATION For the big kids, set out a deck of cards to play Solitaire or board games that can be played alone like Boggle, Scrabble, or Storycubes.

BUSY BAGS STATION Busy bags are perfect activities for toddlers and preschoolers. If you’re not familiar with them, look on Pinterest for plenty of ideas.

WRITING STATION Give the kids something fun or meaningful to write, like a letter to a grandparent or a birthday wishlist.

READING STATION Make sure you’re wellstocked with books. This is a great station for making progress on your kids’ reading comprehension.

SCREEN TIME STATION Let them pick any parentapproved app or website to play on.

ACTIVE PLAY STATION Set out your kids’ favorite toys like Legos, Snap Circuits, Littlest Pet Shop, or Little People.

SCHOOL-LIKE WORK STATION Give them a couple of Summer Bridge workbooks or

nashvilleparent.com

find activity sheets online specific to something your child loves to study. For little kids, use activity books that teach them phonics, to follow directions, or to practice their scissor skills.

OUTSIDE STATION If the weather allows for it, encourage the kids to get some fresh air by playing in the backyard, jumping on the trampoline, or practicing their ball skills in the garage.

VIDEO-MAKING STATION Let your kids become filmmakers by making stop-motion movies (with the Stop Motion Studio app) or movie trailers (with iMovie). They can show the whole family their creations later in the day.

EXERCISE STATION Get them moving with apps like Yoga for Kids or Fitness Kids or the GoNoodle YouTube channel.

CLEANING STATION Put them to work with simple chores like vacuuming, picking up their room, or dusting. (Just make sure that all of your other stations are really fun!)

COOKING STATION Have them help you get ready for dinner by making a salad, peeling potatoes, or opening cans. Or let them make a dessert. If one child doesn’t finish all the steps, the next one can take over to finish the recipe.

GAMING STATION If you have a Wii, Xbox, or another gaming system, let them have a turn playing their favorite video game.

PUZZLES STATION Whether they’re young or old, kids love the challenge of puzzles. You can give them an easy one that they can finish during their time or a harder one that each of them takes turns working on.

FACETIMING STATION Let them video chat with Grandma or Grandpa or a friend they haven’t seen in a while.

DRAWING STATION Give them free drawing lessons using the Art for Kids Hub YouTube channel. Sandi Haustein is a freelance writer and mom of four who writes while her kids are doing stations.

NATIONAL Days of Fun

It’s always a day for celebrating something, right? Let designated “national days” point you toward activity ideas for your kids. It’s fun to have a reason for doing something, and kids are almost always game about a good idea.

NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS FOR KIDS • Start on easy subjects you can get close to • Early morning and sunny evenings are best for light • Take lots and lots of pictures — you can always delete • Set your child’s camera on the highest level of pixel setting — this will make the photo quality pop • Use a camera with a “steady shot” feature to protect against camera shake • Visit places where you’ll find subjects — bird feeders, parks, etc. Source: Childhoodbynature.com

brave National Geographic photographers who get awesome close ups of lions or sharks? Can your kid learn to do the same? No matter where you live, you probably have some “wildlife” around you – cats, dogs, birds, squirrels. Ask your kid to take as many wildlife photos as he wants and then select the 10 best pictures to show you and encourage his work. Also, check out Guide to Photography from National Geographic Kids (you can snag one for under $10 on Amazon). Inspire all of the shutterbugs in your house — everybody loves taking pictures!

THINGS TO DO: FISHING WITH DAD Legendary Tennessee fisherman Bill Dance has a couple of key reminders about fishing with kids.

M

emories with Dad — searching for the perfect fishing hole, getting your very first fishing pole and your first big catch. As kids, we remember these moments forever, and it’s the little things that stick with us. It’s not about the big boat; or stopping at nothing to bring home a bucket of fish; or spending time buying all of that high-quality fishing equipment. Favorite memories come from laughter, simple surprises and just being together. So before you head out on your first fishing trip this summer, remember: keep it simple! Legendary Tennessee fisherman Bill Dance, who was taught to fish by his grandfather, loves teaching kids to fish. He recommends keeping things fun and light in addition to bank fishing so kids can easily get their bearings. “Small waters are a great place for kids to get hooked on fishing,” says Dance. “Make sure you let them use tackle that fits them — not you — and to the size of fish they will catch,” he adds. “They will have a ball catching [them] with a worm under a bobber,” Dance says. Of course, once you get a kid hooked on fishing with Dad, get ready for the asks. “Once you have taught them to catch fish, let the kids take you fishing and you are there because you are tagging along with them,” Dance says. “If fishing’s slow, show them how to catch a crawfish or skip a rock or let them pick a wildflower to take home to mom. Just remember, it’s all about making memories,” he says. The kids will remember your time together. Their memories of the nifty fishing equipment and any extra-long boating excursions may not high on their memorybank favorites, though. Remember: fun, easy, relaxing and repeat.

Fishing With Kids Do’s and Don’ts

Choosing a Fishing Spot

DO plan for a shorter day Simplicity is key and you don’t want to drag out the day. Set aside enough time for fun, but don’t expect it to go as planned.

Bank fishing is the perfect way to teach a kid to fish. Make a morning or afternoon of it, pack a lunch and light tackle, and enjoy.

DO pay attention to weather Is it cool and windy? Chance of rain? This will make a huge difference, especially if you plan on casting your line from a boat. If it rains, don’t grab the umbrellas and head out anyway. There will be more sunny days. DO go to “small” water, especially if your kids are little, according to Dance. Small ponds make it easier to catch a fish. As kids grow older, you can start experimenting with larger lakes and heading out on boats. DO choose live bait. This is the easiest way to catch a fish if you’re a beginner. If it’s your child’s first time fishing, use live bait such as mealworms or wax worms — everything that swims will eat it. DON’T carry too much. Keep your equipment light. The last thing you want is to lug along loads of heavy equipment and use your time together getting it all setup. Your fishing rod, your kids new fishing pole, bait, snacks, sunscreen, water, hand sanitizer and towels. Done. DON’T target a specific fish. This can be way too complicated, especially with younger kids. Whatever they catch, whether it be a giant catfish or little tiny bluegill, make a big deal of it! DON’T stay in one spot. Move around and let your kids have a say on where they want to go next. If they are young and you’re not getting a bite for the first 5 or 10 minutes, move on! DON’T take anything for granted

Be mindful of where you choose your fishing spot, watch the kids closely, and never let your kids bait a hook or handle fishing equipment by themselves unless they already know how. Guide them through it and assist them with their first cast.

6 SUN WISE!

BEST SUNSCREENS FOR BABIES & KIDS

Y

ou already know that kids can get sunburned in as little as 15 minutes if they’re out in the sun without protection. Be smart every time you send you kids out to play. A sunscreen that’s at least 15 SPF is imperative for children, and remember it takes 30 minutes to be effective after application. The additional benefits of using sunscreen with SPF 50+ are limited. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP; aap.org) offers these current recommendations:

BABIES 6 MONTHS & YOUNGER

• Keep out of direct sunlight. Keep in shade. Dress in lightweight clothing covering arms and legs; use a brimmed hat to shade the neck. • If there’s no way to avoid the sun, you can apply a minimal amount of 15 SPF sunscreen to small areas, including the face, neck and hands.

LITTLE & BIG KIDS • Limit sun exposure between the peak hours of 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. • Apply sunscreen with SPF 15 or greater to all areas of skin not covered by clothing. Reapply every two hours, or after swimming. • Select clothing made of tightly woven fabrics. Cotton clothing is best. • Wide-brimmed hats are recommended along with UV-protection sunglasses. • Use sunscreen even on cloudy days. • Zinc oxcide is effective as additional protection on sensitive areas like the nose, cheeks, ears and shoulders.

RE-BOOT

A sculptured water turtle at the entrance to the Bracken Foundation’s Children’s Garden at Cheekwood. PHOTO BY JOHN SHERLOCK

CHEEKWOOD’S Children’s Garden Re-Opens in Phases While high-touch areas remain temporarily closed, the beautiful grounds are not to be missed.

C

heekwood officially opened the Bracken Foundation’s Children’s Garden back on March 7 — and then came the pandemic. Shuttering the mansion and grounds out of necessity, Cheekwood’s newest family feature hardly had its moment. But now, with Cheekwood reopened (at least partially) families can visit the lush and interactive Children’s Garden boasting delightful elements just for children — turtle fountains, a story tree, a fairy garden, a wishing well, an Adventure Walk and more — right now. Mind you, the Cheekwood Mansion remains closed and the Children’s Garden is also reopening in phases, with high-touch areas temporarily off limits. “Many benches are also closed, so we encourage families to bring a blanket and sit on the lawn,” says Caroline Jeronimus, senior communications manager at Cheekwood. Lots more is in store once the Children’s Garden is fully opened. “We will add back in all of the hands-on elements,” Jeronimus says. “We look forward to the day when kids can safely play, learn and create with all of the wonderful elements offered,” she adds. Once it is safe, Cheekwood will add drop-in art and garden activities. Meanwhile, visit all of the estate’s 55 acres, walk your baby on the half-mile Family Sculpture Trail, and reacquaint yourselves with the many wonders of Cheekwood! Cheekwood is located at 1200 Forrest Park Drive, Nashville. Through June 20, hours are Tue - Sat 9 a.m. - 8 p.m; Cheekwood opens at 8 a.m. beginning June 3. Regular operating hours beginning June 21 are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tue - Sun. Admission is $22 adults, $20 seniors 65+, $15 ages 3 - 17, free ages 2 and younger. Call 615-356-8000 or visit cheekwood.org.

I N

T R I B U T E

We’ll Remember

Chad Young 1971 - 2020

Nashville, Rutherford, Sumner and Williamson Parent’s longtime entertainment and managing editor extraordinarie was a tireless worker and a friend to all. We are all better for having known him.

H

e grew up in small-town Illinois, just across the river from Saint Louis. He relished growing up in the 70s, loved the music of the 80s, had a very special place in his heart for his mother as well as Amy Grant, Dolly Parton and all-things-Golden Girls. And the guy just loved, loved, loved the theater. He had an impressive collection of classic Jim Henson Muppets, he could bake cupcakes to rival Gigi’s and we never met a baby who couldn’t fall asleep on his chest. Chad graduated with honors from Belmont University with a journalism degree, and helped to deliver award-winning content here for 24 years. Chad was Nashville Parent’s long-time Things to Do editor extraordinaire. He was an avid volunteer, a lover of service, and 100 percent committed to his work in the community on behalf of the Nashville Parent audience. He LOVED partnering with colleagues from various attractions and destinations in the area, and he owned a work ethic like no other. In fact, Chad Young was a one and only. Chad passed away from complications related to diabetes on May 10, 2020 and we’ll not be over it any time soon, possibly never. On the following page, please help us honor Chad by reading the words of many in the community who had the pleasure of working with him. We can all be more like Chad by learning from him now. Long live Chad Young! — Susan Day, editor (please turn the page)

IN TRIBUTE

“Everything I can think to say about him falls short of our true estimation of his character, work ethic and personality. Our world is a little dimmer with his passing.

“I’m so sorry to hear about this. I loved working with Chad – he was always excited to learn what Nashville Public Library was doing, and share the value that we bring to Nashville with as many people as he could. We’ll miss him terribly.”

— Mary Catherine Mousourakis Owl’s Hill Nature Sanctuary

— Ed Brown Nashville Public Library

“I have been working in the museum field for 21 years and there is not a time that I remember that doesn’t have Chad in it! He has been in my email inbox for decades, encouraging and promoting us all and helping us to engage our audiences! He was so dedicated and hardworking and will be dearly missed.” — Jenny Lamb Historic Sam Davis Home

“Chad was without a doubt one of my favorite journalists to work with – he was always approachable, always eager to help and his enthusiasm for his work was both palpable and contagious. Chad’s passing is a tremendous loss for an entire community that is a better place today thanks in part to his influence and contributions over the past two-plus decades. I am so thankful for having known Chad Young and eternally grateful – as are all of my colleagues at the Nashville Symphony – for the passion he had in supporting and promoting our organization.” — Dave Felipe Nashville Symphony

Quite possibly the last photo taken of Chad, by his close friend, Shane Rhodes. Chad holds Shane and Sarah Rhodes’ newborn daughter, Paisley.

“Chad’s passion for the arts and Nashville’s arts organizations could be felt in every word, story, and review he wrote for Nashville Parent. His insightful and curious writing regularly brought important attention to Nashville’s artists and our broad creative community, and we at Tennessee Performing Arts Center are grateful to have known him and worked with him for so many years. Chad’s enthusiasm and support for TPAC’s programming, in particular our Broadway at TPAC series, was immense, and he was a regular fixture on opening night. Always ready with questions about the production, the cast – even the touring industry itself – Chad was also dedicated to building excitement about the arts among new generations. He will be deeply missed.” — Tony Marks Tenness Performing Arts Center

“In my 20 plus years at the Zoo, I’ve worked with many journalists. Some were outstanding and some needed their hands held. Chad was solid. Always a step or two ahead with his hand on the pulse of family life in Middle Tennessee.”

“I am so sad to hear this terrible news. I worked with Chad for many years and he was always so warm, friendly, and helpful. One of my favorite memories of him was when he came out to our park to do a story on zip lining. He wasn’t sure he was actually going to zip line but after watching others decided to do it. He said he was scared to death of heights and let out a scream as he zipped across. After finishing the first zip line he was ready for more. He will be missed.” — Jennifer Adventure Works

“I am so saddened hearing this sad news. I had no idea. Chad was always terrific to work with. A major loss. Prayers to Chad and those who were lucky to have known him. — Jeff Zimmer Gaylord Hotels

“Chad was one of our Kidsville program’s biggest supporters. He spent many years generously helping us grow the program by promoting it to Nashville parents. Chad was a wonderful partner to so many familyfriendly organizations. He will be greatly missed.” — John Tumminello Centennial Park Conservancy
