BIG IDEAS

NUMBER 1 Magic vs. Illusion What’s Really Real? Why should you trust a magician? Magicians are actually “illusionists”, and they can’t really do magic. Smoke, mirrors, and sleight of hand are key focuses of illusionists. However, many illusionists also perform very real, death defying stunts, leaving viewers to wonder; What’s really real?

NUMBER 2 Magicians make you see what they want you to see Seeing is Believing How they make you believe Magic is all about the perfect amount of deception, and with the right amount, a performer can make their audience believe something impossible just because it ORRNVUHDO:LWKDĂąDZOHVVSHUIRUPDQFHKRZFDQ\RXQRW believe something that happened right in front of your eyes?

NUMBER 3 Anyone can do “Magic” Para(Normal) A lot less impressive when you know how it was done As David Blaine said, “If it can be done by one person, it can be done by others”. These talks would not be giving up the secrets of magic, but rather how a magician prepares for a trick, big or small. Enough information to be intriguing, but not enough to reveal the secrets.

NUMBER 4 Magic is deceiving The Magic of Deception The art of the lie A magician will never hesitate to lie about details of a trick, because in the end what matters to them is getting the viewer to believe the impossible. There aren’t very many other (legal) professions where you do better when you lie.

NUMBER 5 The idea that magicians can take advantage of common human behaviors in their tricks The Illusion of Reality Your eyes are tricking you Magicians are like pick pocketers; they will distract you from the subject at hand and then strike when least expected. They utilize people’s low attention spans and low attention to detail to trick you. This is exactly why a magician will rarely do the same trick back to back; the audience is looking too hard the second time.

NUMBER 6 Magicians and the practice they put into even the smallest tricks Muscle Memory The perfect performance Card tricks and magic tricks in general are so incredibly detail oriented. If a magician doesn’t get every detail just right, they will reveal their trick and leave the audience far from impressed. From making a car disappear to making a quarter disappear, the strength is in the details.

A swarm of mini drones makes ... magic! Marco Tempest began his performing career as a stage magician and manipulator, winning awards and establishing an international reputation as a master illusionist. His interest in computer-generated imagery led him to incorporate video and digital technology in his work -- and eventually to develop a new form of contemporary illusion.

Almog

Boaz The levitating superconductor In October 2011, Boaz Almog demonstrated how a superconducting disk can be trapped in a surrounding magnetic field to levitate above it, a phenomenon called “quantum levitation.” This demonstration, seemingly taken from a sci-fi movie, is the result of many years of R&D on high-quality superconductors. By using exceptional superconductors cooled in liquid nitrogen, Almog and his colleague Mishael Azoulay at the superconductivity group at Tel Aviv University (lead by Prof. Guy Deutscher) were able to demonstrate a quantum effect that, although well known to physicists worldwide, had never been seen and demonstrated in such a compelling way.
