Paul Explains:

What is a polyclinic?

You will no doubt have heard a great deal about so-called ‘polyclinics’ over the past few months. I think this is a good opportunity for me to dispel some of the myths about polyclinics and explain what is really happening. The polyclinic idea was put forward by Ara Darzi, an eminent surgeon who pioneered keyhole surgery and the use of robots in medical operations. He had been asked by the Government to develop a new system of healthcare for London. As London is such a differently organised city to the rest of England, its needs from the NHS are different. There never was and there isn’t any plan to expand the polyclinic model outside of London. It is not a system that has been designed for any other part of England. Or Phone:

Instead, what we are getting in Gillingham and Rainham is a new GP-led walk-in health centre that is open longer than most GP surgeries, and can offer a wide range of services at short notice. This is in addition to our existing GP surgeries and will widen the number of services available to everyone in our communities.

High Quality Care For All What is planned for the future of the NHS, and what does it mean to you? More patient choice, a constitution that offers guarantees to all NHS users, and recommendations for more local treatment. A fundamental review of the NHS has now been published. The NHS Constitution outlines a key set of principles to guide how all parts of the NHS should act and make decisions. It is proposed that the Government will, by law, have to renew the Constitution every 10 years and NHS organisations will have to take account of it. Therefore no Government can change the Constitution without the full involvement of us all – patients, the public and staff. The review concludes that in the 21st Century we need an NHS that can help people to stay healthy and prevent illness by encouraging people to get active and stay active. At the heart of the report is a pledge to get the basis right first time and every time. This means improvements in safety and reductions in healthcare associated infections so everyone has the standard of cleanliness and care they would expect.
