A Retrospective on 2019

As an entrepreneur, I am honored to begin work as the Executive Director of the Davis Chamber of Commerce. With a great staff, supportive Board of Directors and engaged members, I am ready to build upon the great work of the Chamber. Over the course of the next several years, we plan to grow membership, expand our events and take decisive positions on local issues impacting the business community. Prior to joining the Chamber, I managed non-profit associations, lobbied local government agencies, coordinated fundraising activities and handled media issues at the state and local level. Throughout my career, I’ve worked closely with business owners to ensure they could operate and expand their businesses without unnecessary government regulations. I also believe that effective communication among the businesses and elected officials and local staff are critical to a vibrant community. Davis holds a special place for me. Nearly 30 years ago, I met my wife as an undergraduate student at UC Davis. We have fond memories of attending the school and all the great things the community has to offer. I look forward to working with Chamber members and other stakeholders to ensure the organization represents the entire business community. If you have questions or suggestions, feel free to contact me at ckoehler@davischamber.com.

There is a saying that you have to “Look forward to look back.” I couldn’t agree more. As I look back on my 16 months as Chair of the Board of the Davis Chamber of Commerce, it is definitely a treatise on where we are going. The mission statement for the Chamber of Commerce states that we are committed to “Economic Vitality” for the community of Davis. To this end, we have participated in pivotal discussions about the future of Broadband access in Davis, the look, feel and potential of the new Downtown Core Area Specific plan, and worked alongside the Davis PD and other city departments to make our streets safer and “sparkly”. Chamber positions of support have advocated for new industry, improvements to our city streets and sidewalks, as well as additional housing for our UCD students and local community at large. We have increased our presence and that of our members on social media and continued to support the membership by hosting low or no cost workshops on marketing and managing their businesses. I’m immensely proud of the work we have done in 2019 and excited for the future as we move forward under Joe DiNunzio’s guidance. Our Chamber staff comprised of Cory Koehler, Holly Claus and Jovita Husband is a strong team dedicated to providing timely and excellent service to our members and the community at large. Thank you to our partners in City of Davis government, the Davis PD, the DDBA and all of our members for helping us achieve our goals for 2019. Looking forward to a tremendous year in 2020! With personal service, Carolyn Stiver 2019 Chair Davis Chamber of Commerce Distinctly Davis 2019

Fellow Members, As your incoming Chair for 2020, I am looking forward to the opportunity to work with our dedicated staff and board of directors in service of the Chamber members and our city. Davis is a truly amazing place, and your leadership team is eager to continue to do our part to make this a great place to work and live. Next year we plan to focus on three areas of impact: • Continuing to grow our membership roster and our members’ involvement in the Chamber, working to reach out to all businesses that operate in our city; • Actively engaging on governmental and operational issues of importance to the business community, identifying and codifying clear positions that will benefit our city; and • Renewing our commitment to community service, working with our partners on a series of activities and causes where we can do our part to improve the quality of life here in Davis. I look forward to seeing you at our 2020 Installation Gala in January. It will be an entertaining opportunity to kick off the new year by celebrating the great things happening at our Chamber and in our city, all under the rubric of a night of baseball (two-words: t-shirt cannon đ&#x;˜Š). It will also give us the chance to look at how each of us can help make Davis a “Field of Dreamsâ€? for all the members of our community. Joe DiNunzio 2020 Chair Davis Chamber of Commerce

good life LIVING THE

AT UNIVERSITY RETIREMENT COMMUNITY

The benefits of retirement living at URC include not just future medical care as a resident’s needs change, but a comprehensive wellness program that encompasses nutrition, exercise, education, hobby and discussion groups, and social interaction with other residents. In addition to all the social benefits of being surrounded by a friendly, diverse group of residents and staff, there are a wealth of activities both on campus and in the surrounding city of Davis to take part in. For Judy Higgerson, a retired registered nurse, and her husband, Jim Procida, a retired police officer, maximizing the potential of their golden years was a top priority in choosing a Life Plan Community. URC provided not only first-

class living and amenities, it also satisfied their desire to be close to an international airport (Sacramento International is about a half-hour drive from URC), as the two love to travel. Living in Davis also puts them not far from Carmel, where the two lived for 50 years, as well as family in Sacramento. “I call it our cruise ship on land,” says Judy, referring to the resort-like environment at URC. Amenities like the outdoor, heated pool offering year-round enjoyment played a big part in the devoted swimmer’s decision to join the community. URC also boasts a state-of-the-art fitness center stocked with equipment tailored to seniors.

The couple has found the vibrant city of Davis to be a welcoming home with no shortage of things to do. “I call it the ‘Six-Minute City,’” says Judy, as that’s about how long it takes her to get from one end of town to the other. Jim enjoys volunteering at UC Davis athletic functions as well as with the Davis Police Department, while Judy keeps her days filled by participating in the International House Book Club, the Davis League of Women Voters, as well as with the UC Davis Athletic Department Guest Services team. Judy’s background as an RN and owner of a home-care business cemented the couple’s desire to enter a community with the resources on hand to provide the best care possible should their needs change over time. URC boasts a specialized memory-support program that combines specially trained staff and adaptive programs in a family-oriented environment. The skilled nursing & rehabilitation program is staffed with professionals ready to help residents get back on their feet, from short-term care after an illness or injury to longer-term, 24/7 support for those needing extended nursing care. URC is a Medicare-certified facility. Though moving to URC was a decision Judy and Jim arrived at after very careful consideration, time has proved their decision to be the right one. They appreciate the freedom to focus more on living their best lives instead of worrying about home maintenance, taking care of the yard, and other such chores. They love the campus amenities and the easygoing, active, and enriching life that the city of Davis provides through its many opportunities for social and lifelong-learning activities. For those currently considering a move to URC, they offer some simple advice—“Don’t wait, do it now!”

The skilled nursing & rehab team keeps residents active and mobile.

Enjoying a meal and a bottle of wine after a busy day on the town.

A Letter From the City There is a lot going on in the City that can positively impact our economic vitality. Businesses are growing. Engage3, a downtown startup, was on Inc. 5000’s list of fastest-growing companies for the third year in a row. Arcadia BioScience, Marrone Bio Innovations and BioConsortia continue to make headlines for new patents, products and distribution partnerships. Global companies Mars,Incorporated and Archer Daniels Midland have joined our community with potential further expansions. New commercial and residential development investments continue, including the new Nugget Market HQ and two additional office/R&D flex buildings being built at the Offices at Mace Ranch business park. Marriot Residence Inn and Hyatt House extended stay hotels will add needed hotel rooms, create jobs and transient occupancy tax. University Mall has proposed a redevelopment plan for a vertical mixed-use center that will add new residential units and additional commercial space in a modernized “place making” design. A pending vertical mixed-use project in University Research Park will add workforce housing and flex office/R&D space in four new buildings. Two major projects underway, the Downtown Davis Plan update and the proposed Aggie Research Campus, offer potential solutions to our constrained land supply, offering potential opportunities for business growth, new high wage jobs and increased revenue. The Downtown Plan encompasses a 152-acre planning area with a 20-year planning horizon. The objective is to: establish a new vision for a higher density downtown and greater certainty for the community and potential investors through form-based regulations and streamlined review process that is predictable, clear and achievable. The Draft Downtown Plan will be available in mid-October, initiating a 90-day public review period. Chamber members are encouraged to review the document and provide input. The proposed Aggie Research Campus, will leverage UC Davis research, our talented local workforce and serve a significant role in growing our local and regional economies. At full buildout, the proposed project would have about 2.6 M square feet of commercial development, primarily in office, wet lab and R&D space. 850 workforce housing units and phased development are also proposed. Process streamlining efforts underway to reduce permit-processing time and cost for businesses and residents include: proposed municipal code amendments to reduce need for conditional-use permits, expansion of allowed locations for wet labs and R&D, and an increase in staff-level administrative project review. Other streamlining improvements the City is pursuing include new options for online permitting and electronic plan review. -Sarah Worley, AICP | Business Engagement Manager | City of Davis
