Anabolic Steroid Use in Men
Anabolic steroids are used for the purpose of gaining more muscle quickly. They are synthetic versions of natural hormones found in the human body. Impressive muscle development is the one and only positive that AS provide. Side effects are numerous with some being permanent. Men and women suffer some different side effects from AS. The reason for this is that both sexes have quite different hormonal levels. While many of the side effects are different, there are a few that cross gender lines. This article will discuss the side effects of steroid use in specifically men before over viewing side effects common in both sexes. Because AS mimics (or is derived from) testosterone, the male body is better equipped to handle the pseudo hormones. Use of AS by men (while still unwise) does not often include the same drastic life altering consequences that women tend to experience. Many of the characteristics and side effects brought about by AS are natural male traits—only amplified. Use of AS in is known to lead to aggressive behavior in men. The surge in pseudo male hormones can lead to other possible personality changes as well; these include but are not limited to a delusion of grandeur, a feeling of invincibility, extreme irritability, jealousy and paranoia. These alterations in demeanor are commonly referred to as ‘roid rage’. While there are not a lot of studies on the percentage of AS users who experience ‘roid rage’, one or more of the above traits tends to be common in male AS users. Negative physical side effects in men are less pronounced than in women; however, this does not make AS use a good idea. The price for increased strength and speed is high. Some physical side effects that a male AS user may experience include but are not limited to baldness, breast development, infertility, shrinking testicles and/or testicular atrophy. AS use is (arguably) common in professional sports, bodybuilding competitions, and fitness models; however, the danger of using is still present. While from a distance a user’s body may look impressive, chances are that he/she has had to wax away extra hair grown and hide their acne and oily skin. Messing with a body’s hormones makes both men and women more subject to a variety of cancers as well as heart and/or liver diseases. Use of AS may also increase ‘bad’ cholesterol in both men and women, increase blood pressure, cause sleep apnea, change blood coagulation, cause edema, and increase the risk of atherosclerosis (circulatory problems). With all these side effects a possibility, paired with the fact that AS use is illegal, you should now be deterred from using steroids.
