The Living  Word

An inspiring book by an extraordinary man Nick Vujicic was born with no arms and no legs. As a child he felt hopeless and tried to commit suicide several times. Now, with the help of carers, he can walk, swim, surf, and even type 42 words per minute. He says, ‘We have a choice to concentrate on what we do have and stop complaining about what we don’t have and live life to the fullest, knowing that we have a true destiny and a true purpose in the One who gives peace.’ Life Without Limits is an inspiring book by an extraordinary man. Now an internationally successful motivational speaker, Nick’s central message is that the most important goal for anyone is to find their life’s purpose despite whatever difficulties or seemingly impossible odds stand in their way. Yes, this is a personal life story. But it’s more – it’s a guidebook to a positive way of living that overcomes circumstances. Although this is not a ‘preachy’ book, Nick also shares how his faith in God has been his central source of strength.

‘I do believe my life  has no limits! I want  you to feel the same  way about your life,  no matter what your  challenges may be…  What would your life  be if anything were  possible?’  —Nick Vujicic, from Life  Without Limits

It all started with a trip to Greenland… Leonard Smith’s career emerged from a trip of a lifetime to Greenland when he was just 18. He returned with over 1400 slides of spectacular landscapes – glaciers, ice walls and even the midnight sun. His work received so much admiration he decided to become a professional photographer and his first range of eight card designs were published in 1985. The little business has grown. His high quality photographs are now used on a large range of beautiful greetings cards sold in outlets across the UK and in many parts of the world. They retail at a very competitive £1.60 each. Given the attractiveness of Leonard’s work, it’s unsurprising that the cards have become very collectible. There are cards for all of life’s special occasions, and also notecards. Leonard’s wife Issy assists him running the company, based in Colchester. They donate ten per cent of pre-tax profits to charities. This year those include Cancer Research UK, the Children’s Society and the Woodland Trust.

‘This film is a must-see for anyone who is married, engaged, ‘going out’ or simply thinking they might possibly get married at some time in the future... that’s a lot of us. It doesn’t matter whether your marriage is on rocky ground or whether you have a really solid relationship…’

Caleb, a US firefighter, realises his seven-year marriage to Catherine is on the rocks, with countless angry arguments. His wife seems set on divorce and he’s ready to give up. But his father sends him the Love Dare – 40 days of challenges to help mend his broken relationship. At first Caleb is cynical… and he sees that the Love Dare is really tough. But he takes it on – and he’s in for some surprises. To find out how he gets on, you must watch Fireproof for yourself – and don’t forget to have the tissues to hand! Apparently, the entire cast apart from Kirk Cameron are volunteers, not professionals. But I’m told you’d never know it!

Meet David Shepherd – manager of The Living Word David, why the passion for Christian books?

I love the idea that a book can resonate so much  with someone that it has the potential to be a  pivotal point on his or her life journey.

Are there other passions in your life?

Yes, chocolate, cricket and Italian food! Probably in that order…

What career path led you to The Living Word?

Strangely, my first job aged 18 was as the manager of a Christian  bookshop. Then I think God decided I was so naïve that I needed to  understand what the real world was all about. So, in the 40 years since  then, I’ve worked in a building society, then for a training company. And  I’ve been a self-employed business trainer. And now I’m back to where  I started!

What’s your favourite Christian book of all time and why?

Probably a book in the science fiction trilogy by CS Lewis called  Perelandra, otherwise known as Voyage to Venus. It’s many years since  I read this but I still remember being stunned by it. Mind you, I used to  like Enid Blyton and I’m not sure what I would make of the Famous Five  now…

How do you stay so positive when bookshops nationally are having such a hard time?

Short answer: prayer! Long answer: I’m motivated by encouragement  and support from others to discover innovative ways of doing things  more effectively. And I enjoy the challenge of competing with Amazon  even though they probably don’t have a clue who I am!     Find us on Facebook – search for The Living Word Bookshop      Tel: 01858 461000    Email: info@thelivingword.co.uk    www.thelivingword.co.uk   Christian books and resources, Bibles, cards, gifts, music, DVDs, posters
