F R O M TH E G A L L E RY CO O R DI N ATO R The Winter Center Art Gallery is delighted to present the work of Randall Stoltzfus. Our goal for the gallery is to seek regional and national working artists and present their work to students and members of the public who are part of the creative life of the Winter Center. Although Mr. Stoltzfus is himself not from this region, his heritage extends from it’s earliest European settlers. The intention, quality, craftsmanship and creativity of his work bears out those traditions. Bringing professional artists to the campus allows us to engage students by example within a professional context. F R OM T HE A R T I ST I paint the circles by hand. That might seem like an odd thing to do in the information age, but I’m doing it this way on purpose. I’m hoping that you’ll notice how each circle is different. And noticing this, your seeing will begin to slow. When you see slowly, you see things differently. What you thought you saw at first might change. Let that happen. What is the second thing you see? There is this moment that occurs after I’ve been working on a painting for a long time. I’ll walk back into the studio and suddenly I’ll notice something in the image that I did not put there. Not intentionally, anyway. Maybe it’s a new resonance in the way color or rhythm adds up, an overtone. Or a drawing that is happening only in the texture. Sometimes I am startled by an unexpected image, the ghost of something figurative. The hair on the back of my neck might rise, just a little. When I have one of these seen-second moments, I know I’m on the right track. From there I’m trying to make sure the possibility of sharing that experience remains open. The painting is like a container for this afterimage. And I just need to get out of the way. RANDALL STOLTZFUS

It is with great pride that I congratulate Randall Stoltzfus, one of BLANK SPACE gallery’s featured artists, on his solo exhibition at Millersville University’s Winter Center. At BLANK SPACE, we strive to provide a place where the worlds of art and culture can converge. By showcasing work from emerging and established visual artists, the gallery has created a platform that supports contemporary art, fosters the development and exhibition of experimental art forms, and encourages innovative art practices. We are delighted that Millersville University is providing this opportunity to share a part of that vision with you.

Since our gallery was established in 2009, Randall Stoltzfus has had several successful solo and group exhibitions. In that time, Randall has continued to develop his dynamic and light-filled paintings through a personal and meditative approach; painting circles by hand. He paints slowly and intuitively, combining a minimalist-inspired, anonymous repetitive circular mark with a romantic attitude and a masterfully calibrated palette of colors. The resulting patterns create beautiful spaces and subtle abstract shapes. As we saw with the artist’s 2013 solo exhibition at BLANK SPACE, this work receives warm praise from our collectors, gallery visitors, and critics. To all our friends and new visitors, a very warm welcome with confidence that you will enjoy the show and continue to visit the Winter Center Gallery at Millersville University.
