Herald The Town Crier picks out some toppings for frozen yogurt with the help of sweetFrog at sweetFrog Premium Frozen Yogurt

Customer in control at sweetFrog “It’s an experience.” That’s what Uniontown sweetFrog store manager Jennifer Epley says about her ice cream shop, and it’s true because sweetFrog lets the customer control that experience. In fact, customers get to create their own combination of soft-serve premium frozen yogurt and make the most of a toppings bar. “You can come in and make your own ice cream how you like it,” Epley said.

Even though the national chain of sweetFrog stores only came into existence in 2009, Uniontown’s sweetFrog has quickly become a success by always making a good first impression.

and no-sugar-added flavors. Whether you have a craving for caramel sea salt gelato or an aching for alpine vanilla, sweetFrog has you covered.

SweetFrog leaped to the second-place slot in the ice cream store category of this year’s Community Choice awards.

“I think we’re popular because we like to tell the kids that we’re not just your typical ice cream shop,” Epley said.

“We have friendly staff, we try to make everyone smile and be happy when they come in the door,” Epley said. SweetFrog is health-conscious, offering nonfat, lowfat

And that’s unusual.

“I guess people like it, huh?”

It’s an obvious question for anyone who dines at Fiesta Azteca, and it’s a question that assistant manager Ramon Rubalcava is happy to be asking just 21 months after the restaurant first opened its doors. So why has it caught on, taking second place in the Mexican restaurant category of the Community Choice awards?

Fiesta Azteca offers its recipe for success

A menu full of favorites like fajitas, chimichangas, tacos and burritos has certainly helped. So has the restaurant’s Margarita Mondays, during which any margarita is $1.99 all day long. “Location is important,” Rubalcava added, referencing Fiesta Azteca’s prominent abode on West Main Street in South Union Township. Fiesta Azteca has found its recipe for success. “Just treat the people right,” Rubalcava said. “Make sure they come back, make sure they’re happy.” Herald the Town Crier chows down on a taco at Fiesta Azteca

We all know that if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself. But Yum Yum Bakery is one of the only places around that applies that principle to baked goods. Yum Yum Bakery took first place in the bakery category of the Community Choice awards. “We use all fresh ingredients,” co-owner Paul Elias said.

Yum Yum Bakery takes ‘fresh’ approach to satisfy customers

Elias said grocery stores and other chains use preservatives to ship their baked goods. The result? Fewer bakeries that do what Yum Yum does: handle all baking on premises, including doughnuts, bagels, cookies and artisan breads. “That’s why you don’t see that many bakeries, they go out of business left and right because people in the community don’t want to take the initiative to treat themselves.” But more than enough people keep treating themselves at Yum Yum to remind themselves what freshness is all about. “When you taste our doughnuts or bagels, you can absolutely tell the difference,” Elias said. Joyce Angelo and Herald the Town Crier serve up some doughnuts to Olivia Elias and Caitlin Michelangelo at Yum Yum’s Bakery

Herald the Town Crier putts one in at Duck Hollow Golf Club

Duck Hollow Golf Club scores first-place award Duck Hollow Golf Club general manager George Laskey estimates that the club has been in business since 1973. That kind of continuity doesn’t happen by chance, and it helps explain the club’s first-place finish in the golf course category of the Community Choice awards. “We take a lot of pride in our golf course,” Laskey said. “We try to make improvements every year and it seems like the public is really responding to that.”

The golf course features a driving range and two practice putting and chipping greens. The 18-hole course offers 6,500 yards of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72.

and banquet facility all nearby, it’s no wonder that Duck Hollow continues to be Fayette County’s go-to choice for hitting the links.

“We’ve removed a lot of trees,” Laskey said. “We try to make the course more playable. We’re going to continue that process as we go, in both of those areas of improvement.”

Brunswick Lanes spares no amenities Eleven hundred league bowlers. Seventy-five junior bowlers. Seventy-two 48-inch LED flatscreen TVs. “We’re more than a bowling center,” general manager Jeff Nelson said. “We do group events, corporate parties, Christmas parties. We have a pool lounge. We just have a very fun establishment.” Enough fun for a third-place finish in the bowling alley category of the Community Choice awards.

At Brunswick Lanes, the numbers add up.

“We have full service out on the lane, just like if you walk in a restaurant,” Nelson said. “People actually wait on you. You don’t have to wait standing in long lines at the snack bar.” In Nelson’s 38 years at Brunswick Lanes, he’s seen a lot of change, but the one constant has been a commitment to unique family entertainment. “Brunswick has grown very much since I’ve been here,” Nelson said. “We have more upscale foods at our food bar, Italian dinner and backyard barbecue food with pulled pork sandwiches and bruschetta chicken. “We also have something unique to the area, eight-foot screens that drop out of the ceiling to show music videos for our cosmic bowling on Friday and Saturday nights.” Whether you measure the success of a night out bowling by the food selection, the bowling ball selection or the movie selection, Brunswick Lanes has you covered.

YMCA CEO understands why people appreciate facility Steve Snider has only been the Uniontown YMCA’s chief executive officer for two months after having spent the previous 13 years at a YMCA in Sandusky, Ohio. And he’s not afraid to make comparisons.

Page 17

“To compare the two, we have a larger membership and a much better laid out facility than the one I’m used to,” Snider said. “I have a dedicated board and staff.” Snider is quick to point out that Uniontown’s YMCA has an especially generous offering of fitness amenities, which likely explain the YMCA’s second-place finish in the exercise and fitness category of the Community Choice awards. “We have quite a large business center and a very nice indoor walking track,” Snider said. “That’s something that the community that I came from would dearly love to have.” The YMCA also offers water classes, indoor cycling classes and land group exercise. “We’re very pleased and honored by the folks that love coming to the YMCA and using our facility,” Snider said. “We try to uphold a standard of quality service as well as equipment to be able to continue that. We’re looking to continue to do that for years to come.” The Uniontown YMCA offers membership plans for high school students, young adults, senior adults, single-parent households and many other categories. “The Y is making a difference in a lot of people’s lives,” Snider said. “That’s a great responsibility and one that we hold dear to our hearts.”

Maybe that’s why Carmike Cinema is still going strong in two Fayette County locations, in Uniontown and Connellsville, and took first place in the family entertainment category of the Community Choice awards. “I think our success has something to do with our customer service, our friendliness towards customers and our ability to cater to families,” said Matt Wilson, manager of the Carmike Cinema in Uniontown. Together, the Uniontown and Connellsville cinemas provide Fayette County with the latest silver screen blockbusters and mainstream critical favorites. With a wide variety of showtimes and popcorn and nacho selections to look forward to, Carmike Cinema keeps proving that the senses still yearn for entertainment beyond the home entertainment center.

Herald the Town Crier catches a snooze on a recliner at Mundels

Mundel’s Furniture president cites reasons for staying power When Mundel’s Furniture was founded by B.J. Mundel in 1914, World War I and Charlie Chaplin’s film career were both just getting underway.

“It’s not like we’re a big chain. We’ve been in business over a hundred years. We deliver, and we have payment plans available, too.”

Mundel’s Furniture’s $26 million inventory allows for a wide selection of products ranging from recliners and mattresses to dining rooms and upholstery.

Four generations later, it’s Mundel’s president, Randy Mundel, who enjoys the credibility that comes with that kind of staying power, and once again, Mundel’s has taken first place in the furniture store category of the Community Choice awards.

Mundel emphasizes that his business has focused as much as possible on providing American products, which has increasingly become a rarity.

The bottom line?

“I think we’ve thrived because we’re a family owned and locally operated commercial appliance store,” Mundel said.

“Given the choice, we use American-based products,” Mundel said. “Unfortunately, you can get products from China a lot cheaper, but you don’t get the quality or service you do from American sources.”

“Four generations, 100 years of business,” Mundel said. “We guarantee your satisfaction.” 134 Connellsville St., Uniontown, 724-437-7514

All you need to know about the recent success of Abby’s Gold & Gems is that the store has enjoyed a double-digit increase in sales since the economic recession of 2008. “It’s incredible,” owner John Carom said. Carom credits a shift in sales focus with hastening this golden age for Abby’s Gold & Gems, which took second place in the jewelry store category of the Community Choice awards.

Abby’s shines in Community Choice awards

“We always sold sterling silver, but we went into costume jewelry at the outset of the (recession),” Carom said. “We understood that people still wanted to buy jewelry for special occasions, but that they didn’t want to spend hundreds of dollars. They wanted to spend tens of dollars. So our Pandora, our Brighton and our other branded designer jewelries have average prices of $40, $60, $80, $100. That’s an affordable gift in today’s society.” The other half of Abby’s product remains diamonds, as it is still primarily a diamond jewelry store. But Carom points to an active social media and advertising presence to explain Abby’s continued success. “That’s really a testament to my staff changing and doing the right things,” Carom said. “Treating people nicely, the way we want to be treated. That works.” ABBY’S GOLD & GEMS | 197 Morgantown St., Uniontown, 724-437-0808

Parker Motor Sports going full thottle since April Well, that didn’t take long. Parker Motor Sports started selling motorcycles in April, and it is already one of the most trusted motorcycle dealers in the area. Sales manager Wade Friend can hardly believe it. “We’re pretty excited to be nominated (for a Community Choice award),” Friend said. “Being nominated so quick is kind of nice.” Parker Motor Sports rode home a third-place finish in the motorcycle dealer category of the Community Choice awards. And yet Friend knows Parker Motor Sports’ quick rise to motorcycle dealing prominence makes perfect sense. “The area has definitely grown with motorcycles and ATVs,” Friend said. “Everywhere you look now there’s a motorcycle on the road. The area is definitely growing for motorcycle riders, and we’re happy to provide the units for whoever wants to buy one.” It also didn’t hurt that Parker Motor Sports is already a well-known brand. “Because we have the auto dealership, it kind of helped open the motorcycle store,” Friend said. “We already have a really good reputation with autos in the area, and the auto side has really helped with the cycle side.” Just a few months in, Parker Motor Sports is well-positioned to keep up with the growth in motorcycle popularity in Fayette County and beyond. “We’re supplying the community with pretty much all of their recreational Herald The Town Crier tests needs,” Friend said. out an off road vehicle being shown by Barb Parker PARKER MOTORSPORTS |75 E. Smith began practicing in Waynesburg straight out of chiropractic school and has practiced in Uniontown since 2000. So he appreciates the success that his office has enjoyed over the years, and especially lately. Smith took first place in the chiropractor category of the Community Choice awards. “We just recently added two other doctors to the practice,” Smith said. “They brought with them their patients and I just really think the blend of adding the new doctors has helped.” Smith now has more hands on deck providing chiropractic care, specializing in massage therapy, onsite X-rays and exercise rehabilitation. Smith credits his staff for his office’s continued success in treating back and neck pain. “I think our staff definitely goes above and beyond in trying to help our patients and make things as easy for them as possible when it comes to getting appointments,” Smith said. Village Laundry touts low prices, friendly attendants

But trips to the laundromat don’t have to be a monotonous exercise, as proven by the popularity of Village Laundry, which won first-place honors in the laundromat category of the Community Choice awards. “The prices have always been low,” owner Taffy Lucas said. “We have friendly attendants.” Village Laundry also has wash and fold service, plus an equally clean reputation. United Bank stays connected to customers and community It’s got more than 130 full-service offices in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and Ohio, with 40 consecutive years of dividend increases to shareholders, all of which market President Ed Franczyk is proud of. But Franczyk has another explanation for the success of United Bank in its four Fayette County locations.

United Bank’s got backup.

“Our employees are very involved in the community,” Franczyk said. “They belong to a number of nonprofits, they log a lot of volunteer hours and give back to the community.” Franczyk, who has been in the banking business for more than 40 years, knows the value of banking with a presence in the community. “Customers come first,” Franczyk said. So, even though it may have heavy-duty organizational backup, it’s United Bank’s face-to-face wealth management and personal services that matter even more.
