THE RAG GUERRILLA GUIDE TO THE GARDEN CITY

urban vistas

Well

made pots have the potential to become an integral part of and enhance daily rituals. a simple mug of coffee can be a tragic event when consumed out of an improperly made vessell. a great pot can bring joy and increased satisfaction to the experience. This principle applies to all forms of pottery. I strive to solve problems that are fundamental to function and then let my aesthetic decisions be guided by my mood or state of mind. Sound design and biographical content meet without compromise. I follow a simple mantra passed down to me by a former professor during undergraduate studies, “Don’t make your pots too smart, just make great pots.” I try very hard to make great pots.

CHEROKEE ROSE

In 1916, with the support of the Georgia Federation of Women’s Clubs, the Cherokee rose (Rosa laevigata)was named the state floral emblem. The name “Cherokee Rose” is a local designation derived from the Cherokee Indians who widely distributed the plant. The rose is excessively thorny and generously supplied with leaves of a vivid green. In color, it is waxy white with a large golden center. Blooming time is in the early spring, but favorable conditions will produce, in the fall of the year, a second flowering of this hardy plant.

Challenged to fill the lobby with a sculpture that will cause a “traffic jam” at the doorway – of the new Georgia Health Sciences University (GHSU) School of Dentistry (SOD) was fulfilled by a 28-foot Chandelier complete with LED lighting to compliment the amazing “Green Building”. The sculpture consists of stainless, textured and mirrored glass, Laticrete grout, and 10 plus months of hard work spanning from snowy blistering cold to the sweltering heat of July. During the build Augusta State University’s Jarod Bell, filmed a documentary of the project’s creation There were hundreds of square footage with thousands of extremely small tiles, it was a marathon of endless days and nights with long hours of nipping, cutting, and laying glass. The project tested all that endured the creation. Go by the SOD and check it out — it’s definitely not what you expect to see in Augusta, GA.

FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome to The rag’s inaugural issue. The guerrilla guide was designed to serve a purpose. The objective being to share the city with urban appreciationists. Reporting on activity in the different sectors, The Rag manuveurs to discover more, experience more, and create more. The Rag does not abide counter-insurgents of apathy and haters. But I digress. Enjoy the vistas and views included in this weeks Rag. David

martial music Untitled James Brown Documentary FILMING In addition to the anticipated Get On Up film due to release later this year, director Alex Gibney also premiered a sneak peak of his upcoming documentary on Soul Brother #1 at the Tribeca Film Festival. Some day they will figure out what superhuman protein or enzyme allows Alex Gibney to make so many movies with such alarming speed. Until then, we’ll just have to content ourselves with watching them. This next project marks something of a turn away from last year’s twinned films about mendacious provocateurs, The Armstrong Lie (Cycling) and We Steal Secrets (Wikileaks). It promises to be a “definitive” documentary on the musical titan. Alex Gibney is among the very elite of documentary filmmakers. He is responsible for Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God (2012), Enron: The Smartest Guys In the Room (2005), and Catching Hell (2011) for ESPN’s 30 for 30 series. He also won an Academy Award for Taxi to the Dark Side (2007). Having already investigated scapegoating and bullying via a frightening episode in baseball’s history when a fan interfered with a foul ball during Game 6 of the 2003 National League Championship Series at Wrigley Field, he was well prepared to deal with Lance Armstrong from deification, to dirty politics and the long purgatory faced by some of sport’s fallen heroes. Release Date has not been announced.
