It’s 2014 the spring semester has started, and the Wesleyan Office of Admissions is already busy with new student admissions and transfers for both this semester and the next one. At the start of the 2014, the admissions office made a few changes - one of which is moving its office to its own space from the O’NealSells Building to the Baker-Martin House. One reason for the change is due to a visit from a consultant who evaluated the campus visit from a new student’s perspective. The

student experience - especially in the first year - is important to the prospective student’s decision on a college home. The office has been moved so that students can have their own space when these potential students visit campus for the first time. The Baker-Martin House offers a perfect new setting for the office in the eyes of Wesleyan administrators. “This is a very good starting point,” said Denelle Rodriguez, assistant director of operations for the Admissions Office. “We try Armstrong

to make the campus visit experience a very warm and welcoming for our perspective students and families.” The O’Neal-Sells Building has many different offices, and it sometimes made it difficult to find the Admissions Office there. “That’s the big difference is it will be easier to identify, more of a comfortable and welcoming environment,” said Chad Wylie, senior admissions counselor in admissions. Wesleyan, Rosedale deserving of Renaissance

Having such a rich history in the city of Fort Worth - actually in the state of Texas - Texas Wesleyan University should have a campus that matches the illustrious background. With the construction taking place on Rosedale, the street in front of campus, that is exactly what they are planning to do. As great as that is, however, it is coming at great sacrifice not only to us students but those who live in the surrounding neighborhoods. Rosedale Street is being worked on - in other words it is being ripped up completely. There is a detour around every corner, literally and figuratively. The ending date of this project is somewhere toward the end of 2014, and even though it is only Armstrong

next year, it seems like it is much further, actually we feel as though the end is never going to come. When students try to leave campus, we are faced with a plethora of roadblocks. We can only imagine the struggle that the commuters are faced with daily and nightly. The construction adds at least an additional five minutes to the commute, and that is just one street. Rosedale is down to two lanes most days, one going each way. Recently, there entire block in front of Wesleyan has been barricades. The bulldozers that are tearing through concrete and asphalt have become the soundtrack to Wesleyan students. Now, not only is Rosedale being worked on, North Beach Street has construction,

and the construction on Rosedale seemingly goes as far as the eye can see - even in the direction of TCU. We as students should have pride in our university, and when we as students see construction taking place, we must remember that when there is construction there is progress and growth for the university. Both of these things are positives. Right now, though, it is hard for us to see the positive because we cannot see past the bulldozers and construction cones. We do know some progress is there. And when this project is done, it only means that the campus is one step closer to being just as illustrious in looks as it is in legacy.

important functions of the Admissions Office, but long before potential students become Wesleyan applicants, the admissions staff has been working to recruit students by raising awareness about the university. Recruiting students is key to the life of colleges and universities, and this is another major role the Office of Admissions plays in attracting students to Wesleyan. “It’s really important,” said Pati Alexander, vice president of enrollment and student services, “not only for the student body. A university has to bring in new students every single semester, for the Armstrong

culture, the student activities and the student life. That’s why we’re a university. Professors have to have somebody to teach, so it’s important that we have to keep up with it.” Another vitally function of the Admissions Office is to help with international students. This often involves helping them navigate the enrollment process. Wesleyan has many international students from 20 different countries represented by the new students attending Wesleyan during the spring semester. International students enrich the student experience by providing different perspectives and exposure

to different cultures. Students are coming from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Guana, Saudi Arabia, Nepal, Thailand, Egypt, Mongolia, India, Sweden, Malalysia, China, and Germany. The Admissions Office plans for the future by managing student numbers between freshmen and transfer students and to increase the number of visiting students in a welcoming environment. Target numbers for the future semester is to enroll 217 freshman and 315 transfers in the fall 2014 semester. The number of spring 2015 transfers is targeted at 150 students.

Safety training updates Wesleyan community Story by Rosy Perez As you know, Wesleyan is undergoing many changes recently with the trees, sidewalks and more trees, but what you do not see is the steps Wesleyan is doing to try and keep us safe. After spring break all the university faculty and staff were required to receive training regarding weather, bombs, shooters, and other campus safety issues. Prior to this semester, staff was not required to take training even though it was offered. Now that all staff members have been trained, students should be next but in case you are found in a situation and don’t know what to do there are now new emergency handbooks in class rooms. These handbooks will tell you what you need to do in various situations that we hope don’t occur but can.

Blake O. Bumbard, security manager at Texas Wesleyan, gave the training which helped me see that Texas Wesleyan is improving on training staff on how to make this a safe campus. One of the topics that was mentioned at the training was the switch of technology used to alert students via text message and phone calls. While walking around the campus, you may have noticed the kiosks around informing us about the change taking place. If you are currently enrolled in the Wesleyan Emergency Management System, you are encouraged to go to Ramlink and update your information before April 30. The information that will only be rolled over to the new system is your Texas Wesleyan email and not your cell phone number. Students can go to the Texas Wesleyan home page ( and access the far lower right link to “Emergencies” to enroll in the Armstrong

emergency alert plans. I already signed myself up, and it took less than three minutes. Once you have clicked on Emergencies’ link, you will be directed towards a page and it will say Student signup or Employee sign-up, once you have clicked on the tab you will be taken to Ramlink where you will type in your login credentials. After that, you can put in your cell phone number and maybe your parents’ cellphones and check if you want text or voice emergency alerts. You can even enter an alternative email, house phone, business phone, or campus phone. These are great strides for Texas Wesleyan, and I hope when you are looking at the web page, you do look through the tabs for different safety scenarios. Campus security never wants anything any hazards to happen, and it does not hurt to be prepared.

The group meets monthly and brings in guests from the accounting profession. “This provides students the chance to hear firsthand about the duties and responsibilities associated with that career path as well as the opportunity to ask any questions they may have. We also bring in representatives to provide students information about various professional certifications such as certified public accountant (C.P.A.), certified fraud examiner (C.F.E.), certified internal auditor (C.I.A), certified information systems auditor (C.I.S.A.), or certified management accountant (C.M.A.).” The accounting society also completes service projects like cleaning up the Collard Street Bridge or volunteering with the Ft. Worth Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. “It is fun to work with the students on projects outside of the classroom.”

Smith: I guess in high school I had always been a groupie type and I

At Ole Miss (where he graduated from) there’s nothing to do there, it has some great restaurants and bars so as a consequence it has a striving social scene. Lots of bands started forming and The Beatles helped a lot and we played every week for two hours at the fraternity parties and we played every weekend at junior colleges, fraternity and sorority parties, high schools, in Tennessee, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas and Alabama. Smith: actually Rock, (then paused) but that is a broad term, more R’N’B. We were playing mostly for people for dance. We believed everybody they played should sing and everybody that sang should play, that was the type of philosophy Who were your music influences at the time? Did it include people like Buddy Holly and Elvis? Smith: Yes it did! (In the band) I was manager, sang and played, I probably wasn’t the most talented singer in the group and I probably wasn’t the most talented musician but I probably had more interest and enthusiasm for it. The roadrunners and the something and something’s were the names of the bands, and if you type it Google you can still find the music somewhere. Me: Do you have plans to retire anytime soon? Smith: If I planned to retire right now which I’m not I would spend more time more playing music, practicing magic, reading magic stuff and get back into some areas of ventriloquism which I used to do more of. When I was ten (years old) I saw an ad in a magazine for a school of ventriloquism, it turns out it was just one guy running it. I couldn’t afford to go so I got a book and dummy instead for $50 as a Christmas present.To listen to the interview in full, visit:
