TOD TOOL OF DESIGN

DRAWING TOOL FOR CREATIVE PEOPLE

GROUP PROJECT

CHALLENGE

We had to design a product to be sold in the shop of the National Museum of Science and Technology Leonardo da Vinci of Milan. The idea had to originate from one of the exhibits of the museum. The final object should be aimed at users within a wide age range and the production costs had to be maintained under a certain limit.

SOLUTION

TOD is a pocket sized drawing tool to make circles, straight and double lines. It is a technical product that visually recalls the style of Leonardo's engineering and machinery in the museum. The way TOD is designed will make it easy to work, carry and stock for the producer, reseller and customer alike. It will be possible to sell this product to each visitor of the museum, be it a creative kid, an encouraging parent, an amateur artist or even a professional. Being a unique solution, replacing many common items, the museum shop will be able to sell it as an uncommon object as well as brand it and sell it as merchandising.

OUTCOME

TOD was exposed at the National Museum of Science and Technology Leonardo da Vinci in February 2014 and selected to be sold in the museum shop.

EXTENDED MEMORY FOR AD PATIENTS

PERSONAL PROJECT

CHALLENGE

For my bachelor thesis, I was challenged to develop, in collaboration with National Institute of Health and Science on Aging - INRCA, an innovative solution for the rehabilitation of Alzheimer’s patients. Pointing to the centrality of the patients in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, the aim was to support their mnemonic, intellectual, practical and emotional abilities, in order to improve quality of life.

SOLUTION

My Extended Memory - MEM - is a portable IT equipment, easy to use and handle by the patient. It consists of a complex cover build around an iPad, which adds features aimed at simplifying the user’s interaction with the product. The comprised elements are a handle, two e-ink buttons, pulse sensors, loudspeakers and a charging system. In addition to the cover, I designed a pillow for horizontal use and a frame for wall attachment, all three connected through an easy placement system using magnets. Following a collaboration with a psychologist specialized in the Alzheimer’s dementia, I also designed the content of the app that would ensure certain functions of the tablet.

AEI SPICE RACK FOR TASTE LOVERS

GROUP PROJECT

CHALLENGE

A well fitted kitchen or drinks storage place can be spaces of chaos and disorder, where it becomes difficult to perform the very activity this space is meant for. We had to design an object that would help with the storage of foods and drinks, turning the spaces accommodating such items into well-organized areas.

SOLUTION

AEI is a user friendly spice rack, representing a monument to taste and good food, all in 40 centimeters of diameter and 10 of depth. The spherical cap of stainless steel is able to rotate around its axis. In can be placed on a table, on a kitchen top, as well as hanged on a wall. The spice rack has in the center a stylized scheme that helps the user to set the spices in the right place and find them quickly when they are needed.

BOTTLE RACK FOR CHIC BARS

GROUP PROJECT

CHALLENGE

A well fitted kitchen or drinks storage place can be spaces of chaos and disorder, where it becomes difficult to perform the very activity this space is meant for. We had to design an object that would help with the storage of foods and drinks, turning the spaces accommodating such items into well-organized areas.

SOLUTION

We created an object made up of modular components, each of them formed by three steel tubes, which keep the wine bottles at the right inclination angle and temperature to ensure the best taste. The bottle rack is meant to be hanged from the ceiling of the room, suggesting to the viewer a fancy chandelier. This feature allows restaurants to use 3hands for exposing fine wines in the center of a table, where clients can observe and pick up their favorite wine to accompany their dinner. Overall, the object aims at breaking the schemes, overstepping the traditional concept of cellar and bottle racks.

VINOGAMI BOTTLE RACK FOR WINE ADMIRERS

GROUP PROJECT

CHALLENGE

A well fitted kitchen or drinks storage place can be spaces of chaos and disorder, where it becomes difficult to perform the very activity this space is meant for. We had to design an object that would help with the storage of foods and drinks, turning the spaces accommodating such items into well-organized areas.

SOLUTION

The product we created is inspired from the ancient oriental technique of origami, being made out of only one flat sheet of metal, cut and folded into shape. This translates into a facile production process in terms of time and costs. Although it is completely made out of metal, the interchange between the bottle and the metal surfaces creates an interesting light and color play. Vinogami is versatile, as it can be used horizontally, hanged vertically on a wall or even placed on an inclined surface, such as a mansard roof.

OPLÀ PLAYFUL PACKAGING FOR HEALTHY SNACKS

GROUP PROJECT

CHALLENGE

Childhood obesity is on the rise due to physical inactivity and malnutrition. This problem pushes schools and other institutions to promote nutritional education campaigns for students, from the earliest years of schooling. Many of the initiatives focus on healthy meals with locally-grown organic products. We had to design a package in order to diffuse this type of snacks among children in kindergartens, primary and secondary schools.

SOLUTION

Oplà is a corrugated board packaging divided in two compartments, designed to hold a fresh fruit and a carton of fruit juice. The two separate compartments allow you to add products to the packaging in moments and places very distant from each other. The loading cycle could begin in a food company, weeks before consumption, with the inclusion of a fruit juice carton. Subsequently, the packaging would be sent to the school canteen, where the fresh fruit would be placed and handed directly to students. The box is morphologically designed and proportioned for children aged 5 to 12 years. It proposes lively and playful forms, dynamic and funny graphics and a solid structure with no sharp edges. The cuts and folds are finely designed to provide excellent foldability, modularity and stackability.

SCILLA E CARIDDI EXHIBITION STAND FOR LOW ECO IMPACT

GROUP PROJECT

CHALLENGE

Our team had to redesign an existing stand for exhibiting panels, with the aim of decreasing the ecological impact of the product. Both the materials and the process of production were analyzed using the tool of life-cycle assessment.

SOLUTION

Our display unit has a particularly adaptable structure, being vertically adjustable depending on the size of the exposed material and horizontally extensible according to the quantity of material. The structure is composed of a fixed vertical element, endlessly multipliable, and a horizontal one variable in length. These two elements allow the creation of specific paths depending on the contexts. The final result of the redesign was a reduction of the environmental impact by 90%.

ECO-KAY BOTTLE KAYAK FOR WASTE RECYCLING

PERSONAL PROJECT

CHALLENGE

The project started from the desire to find with an entertaining and useful way to deal with a household’s plastic waste. My aim was to create a functional vessel by using only recycled materials.

SOLUTION

I started by calculating the right amount of air chambers needed and their best layout, in order to keep the boat balanced and agile. Forty 2-liters plastic bottles were used to build the hull of the kayak, ensuring that they would sustain the passenger’s weight. Other eighty bottles composed the upper body of the kayak. All the bottles were connected, by using only chords, to four wooden boards forming the structure that kept the kayak together. Once finished, I used the kayak to take sea trips in the bay of Taormina, Sicily.

LOGO

ACHILLE CASTIGLIONI FOUNDATION

INSPIRED LOGO FOR DESIGN MUSEUM

GROUP PROJECT

CHALLENGE

Developed as part of the contest “A logo for the Achille Castiglioni Foundation”, the establishment which keeps alive the studio where one of the Italian design maestri worked for more than sixty years. The challenge received was to create a logo, as well as a coordinated corporate image for the foundation.

SOLUTION

We developed our logo proposal inspired by the notorious creations of Achille Castiglioni. The logo incorporated three colors: red, representing the plastic that was widely-used in the 80s, grey, reminding of the cleanliness of the stainless steel, and beige, suggesting the warmth of the wood. Other elements that were inspired by the designer’s work are the dimensional ratio specific to most of his objects and the theme of the fil rouge. Moving down to the details, in a similar fashion to the maestro’s own creation, we mirrored the cut edges and the interplay of light and shadow, by using two shades of each color.

OUTCOME

Selected as one of the best logos participating in the competition and displayed at the exhibition organized by Studio Museo Achille Castiglioni during the Milan Design Week 2013.

WORK EXPERIENCE #1

ACTR CENTER MULTIPURPOSE AIR CUSHION PLATFORM PROJECT

PRODUCT DESIGNER OF LIGHT VEHICLE

RESEARCH PROJECT

CHALLENGE

The aim of the project was to explore new functions of the multipurpose air cushion platform, developed by the Air Cushion Technologies Research Center, in order to create new prospects of usage and sale. Our focus was on the constrains regarding the weight and balance of the hovercraft. The purpose was to shape a vehicle for labor activities which would offer excellent performance in terms of agility and safety for the workers.

SOLUTION

We designed a hovercraft meant for the oil spill clean-up activity following ecological disasters. The arrangement was an ultra-light version to fit best the aimed actions. The focus was laid on the materials used, such as polyethylene, folded and welded into complex shapes to be perfectly functional, light and easy to repair. The elements designed included the prow with adjacent inside pockets; the control column and the seats of the pilot, both having three matching positions that allow driving while seated, leaned or standing; collapsible seats for the workers provided with storage containers; and the sliding covering canvas.

GA&PARTNERS PRODUCT, LIGHTING AND INTERIOR DESIGN FIRM

PRODUCT DESIGNER OF LIGHTING PROJECTS

INTERSHIP

CHALLENGE

The tasks consisted of developing, rendering and presenting various projects of lighting, retail and furniture design. It was required to work together with a team of design professionals and other interns, in order to identify the client’s needs and to design objects accordingly, as well as to find suppliers for needed pieces. A special challenge involved designing lighting objects using the technologies previously developed by Status, an Italian enterprise in the lighting area.

SOLUTION

I designed proposals of lamps, focused around two concepts. First, two models were available to the client in any length he desired, being made of aluminum extruded profile. Furthermore, it was possible to connect more lamps together, obtaining assemblies of various layouts, usable as wall sconces, pendant or ceiling lamps. The second category of proposals consisted of tile lamps, which allowed them to be placed between the tiles of a wall, thus becoming part of the mosaic, or to be matched with the wall paper, particularly those created by Effeitalia. In addition, I contributed to some projects of retail and furniture design, such as for a sushi restaurant to be opened in Beijing, China, for a luxury yacht and for a spa center.

OUTCOME

One of the tile lamps, Aglaia, was exposed as part of the stand of Status during the Euroluce 2013 in Milano. Currently it is in progress of being produced by Status.

CLOUD-BASED PRESENTATION SOFTWARE COMPANY AMBASSADORSHIP

AMBASSADOR AT POLIMI CAMPUS

CHALLENGE

The challenge was to promote within PoliMi the innovative presentation tool Prezi, which gives its users freedom to display ideas in creative ways. It was necessary to adapt the promotion to the university’s culture and to the target audience, which consisted of students, mostly aged between 18 and 25, studying project-based disciplines. Moreover, I had to create, execute and update an action plan comprising all activities. Collaboration within an international team of nine ambassadors was also required for part of the activities.

SOLUTION

I started with a social media campaign creating a fan page on Facebook and sharing content in the groups of PoliMi students. This was followed by an on-site teasing campaign, during which I handed flyers with intriguing messages and design in the key points of the campus, thus stimulating the curiosity and creating expectations of the public. My focus was on viral prezis, which I developed periodically on various themes, from university-related information to seasonal cultural holidays. In the process, I focused on combining trend research to identify potential themes of interest for my public, with attractive graphic design, all aiming at displaying Prezi’s top features by using them in original ways.

OUTCOME

By the end of the first semester my work resulted in 400 new users and the same number of newly created prezis. The leading result consisted of 150 thousand views of the viral prezis I have created, which accounts for approximately 10% of the overall goal for the whole team of 68 international ambassadors of this year.
