Iwonski was born in Germany in 1830 and moved to the Unites States via Galveston in 1845 with his family and became a naturalized citizen. He lived in New Braunfels and later San Antonio. During the Civil war he sketched troops in the south Texas area. From 1866-1970 Iwonski and artist, Herman Lungkwitz ran a photography studio in San Antonio. In 1871 he took a sabbatical and studied art at the Berlin Academy of Art. These two portraits, likely mother and daughter, are excellent examples of Iwonksi’s adept skills as a painter.
