Lady Gaga channels spirit of Joanne by DJ Marc J. Cubs

Lady Gaga has been quoted that the backlash from the album was “hurtful at times. … It doesn’t feel good when you put that much time and work and effort into things, and people make fun of them, or shame you for things you’ve created.” But all wasn’t lost. She decided to do some pretty savvy things – following in the steps of her idol David Bowie – and did a complete 180. She released a jazz album with Tony Bennett that earned her a Grammy, jumped into more acting with American Horror Story: Hotel and earned a Golden Globe), plus she got an Oscar nomination for an original song about college campus sexual assault. So yeah, I think she did OK despite this “setback.” LADY GAGA’S TRIUMPHANT RETURN to pop music began with Joanne’s debut song “Perfect Illusion” last month. It was quickly met with lots of … “dafuqs” and “Thoughts and Prayers.” People felt like this wasn’t the real Lady Gaga. But you know what, this is.

She does what she wants, unapologetically. And if she wants to make a dancerock lead single from her album, she’s goAFTER HITTING A MINOR BUMP IN THE ROAD WITH ARTPOP THAT ing to do it. AS THE ANNUAL ATLANTA AIDS WALK & 5K RUN PREPARES TO STEP OFF FROM PIEDMONT PARK, WE UPDATE 5 THINGS EVEN THE STAUNCHEST ADVOCATES MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT HIV By Mike Fleming If you haven’t already, the time is now to register and donate to the annual AIDS Walk. The local coming together remains as necessary today as ever. Without much fanfare, gay men passed one of the most important anniversaries in LGBT history in June. No, not Stonewall. It was June 3, 1981 when the New aYork Times first reported a “rare cancer seen in 41 homosexuals.”

Two days later, the CDC confirmed five cases of gay men with severe pneumonia. For the next 14 years, AIDS was all but a death sentence. Anti-Retroviral medications changed the face of HIV, but it’s far from over. There’s as much hope as heartache these days. So as we take on yet another AIDS Walk on Oct. 16 in Piedmont Park with AID Atlanta and dozens of smaller agencies, here are 5 pieces of info you might not realize as AIDS enters its 36th year.

HEPATITIS C IS A BIGGER THREAT You’re statistically more likely to contract sexually transmitted Hepatitis C than HIV, and Hep C is the biggest killer among all infectious diseases in the U.S. A CURE IS COMING There is one person officially “cured” of HIV, and several are in what scientists call “HIV remission.” Doctors finally believe that they are hot on the trail of the culprit. PREP IS NOT HELPING ENOUGH Awareness of Truvada as a preventative is high and rising. Actual widespread use of it is not. Financial access for most at-risk people is still questionable. MOST TRANSMISSIONS ARE BETWEEN REGULAR PARTNERS Some 68 percent of new transmissions occur within relationships or between regular sex partners. That jumps to 79 percent for guys aged 16-24. HIV RATES ARE DROPPING, UNLESS YOU’RE GAY Diagnoses among all others dropped 19 percent in a decade. Among gay men, new infections are “leveling off,” but not dropping.

REAL STORIES OF GAY ATLANTA DOUCHEBAGS, DOLTS, AND DISMAL DATES We’ve all had one – or you know, way more than one. Bad dates are part of life, but some are so epic, they earn their own place in the annals of gay time immemorial. Here we collect stories from willing participants ready to share their woes in hopes you never, ever, have to go through one of these terrible, horrible, no good, very bad dates.

MOM FAIL

“After a bad breakup, I let my mom set me up with the son of one of her friends. I knew nothing about him other than his name and the fact that he was “a little older than” me. I like Daddies so I agreed. Turns out he was 22 years older and kept trying to make outdated pop culture references in an attempt to get in my pants. Thanks, Mom.”

BABY TALK

“So I had an OK conversation on Tinder with this cute guy, and agreed to meet him for coffee. It went OK, and we set a real date for dinner. Halfway into his third martini, he starts talking hyperstereotypical baby talk.

34 | 10.12.16

When my dinner came, he started cutting TMI my steak. When I excused myself to the “This guy who works at the restaurant restroom, he asked if I need help wiping. next to the one I work at asked me out. We went to a cute little bar, and I thought No I’m not kidding, and no I don’t know he was really cute. Just as we ordered what happened after I bolted.” drinks, he leans in and says, “I like Mountain Dew enemas.” I just blinked at CATFISH him until I got my wits back and walked “After a friendly phone call following an out.” online chat, my date looked nothing like his photo. Then he proceeds to talk about CRIME & PUNISHMENT how ugly he is and how no guys like him. “Playing pool with this guy and he’s gonna Then he asked if I thought he was ugly. I get some. We are hitting it off bigtime. did, but I talked around it and got out of Then this other guy walks up and throws a beer in my newly acquired date’s face. there. Then the police show up, arrest him, and Two days later, he sent a no-subject take me in for questioning about how I e-mail with nothing but a totally limp dick knew him. That’s where he told me he can’t “So I meet a guy at a pretty nice mixedhave orgasms and almost can’t even get clientele bar in a hotel in Midtown. When it up because of his antidepressants. I was miserable, but the part that gets me is he texted to ask me out again a couple days later.”

BAD INFLUENCE

I’m chilling with the guy at a certain gay bar when his best friend walks up and starts egging him on to do shots, like a lot of them. Then they start writing a porn together out loud involving everyone around in the plot and positions, etc. They got so drunk, I called them an Uber – a separate from mine.

CAR SEX

One thing led to another, and we went from making out to pulling things out to play with in the car outside the restaurant. I’m pretty into it, and next thing you know I am pulling on my pants while a cop escorts me from the vehicle. Bad enough, right? Then my date says I was instigating sex he didn’t want to have! I had to talk fast not to go to jail.

SKYVIEW

My ex in all his brilliance decided a good place to break up with me was while we were on the ferris wheel thingy downtown. Not only are we stuck there, he starts vomiting on me and other people. As we get off, he continues to vomit on people. I am still traumatized.again a couple days later.”

Maybe the game is exciting, maybe the ads are good, but when the biggest pop stars hit that stage, you jump up.

When XTube and Porn Hub just assume you’re straight and show you things that are a total boner kill.

Everybody has to make a living, and it’s nice that they’re cool, but this can be cruel and unusual punishment.

It’s not funny. In fact, you’re uninformed at best, an awful person at worst. Just say no to shaming each other.

When guys refuse to share a face pic, and you can’t tell if you’re being catfished by the nicest D you’ve ever seen.

When you realize nobody here is a top, and bumping booties simply gets nobody where he needs to go.

It’s a different, awful thing for gay guys. Gay or straight, you’re into him and he just put you in the friend zone.

become resistant to meds, and harder to get rid of multiple strains when cures begin to appear for one of the ones you have. The CDC says we’re within years of the first “remission” and hot on the trail of a final answer.

HEY,

Daddy!

What your new friend may know that you don’t is that Hepatitis C is now officially a bigger threat. You’re statistically more likely to get it than HIV, and it’s the biggest killer of all infectious diseases in the U.S. What’s more? It’s harder to treat and more dangerous if you’re also HIV-positive. Hey, Daddy! I make it a habit not to have sex with poz guys. Friends say I’m prejudiced. I say I’m careful. You know stuff. What’s the word?

Hey, Daddy!

Dear RID’N DIRTY:

Will Running Off Negate Ghastlies?

My partner and I are both HIV positive and undetectable. Having the same status takes stress off our sexual encounters with the other poz guys we hook up with.

So many myths, so little time. What better week than AIDS Walk Week to tackle some common misconceptions? Welcome to the front of the line of guys who can benefit from some truthtelling.

Dear WRONG:

Since we already have it, we know the worst is done, and we can’t give it to each other or anyone else. But now this third guy we recently invited into our bed has us questioning the occasional “slips” we make into dirtier sex. He says we have to still act as if we are neg and be super safe because there’s other stuff “worse” than HIV/ AIDS. What is he talking about? Really It’s Decided, Now Doubt Randomly Tries Yapping

The word you’re looking for is shortsighted. On the one hand, you miss good sex with some potentially great guys if you avoid the ones telling you Let’s stop thinking of sex as “dirty” and they’re positive. On the other, how do you “clean.” The stigma wreaks havoc on know the guy you’re doing is negative? gay men’s lives. From there, I bring no judgment on anyone who considers What if he lies? The negative impact of big actions you take career-wise may be blown up, lit by the glare of the outer-world spotlight. If you don't want to cause 'a bigger deal' than necessary, include other players in your process. That doesn't necessarily mean you'll agree, nor that you ought to compromise, but going around them won't cut it.

Speak up if you see a serious problem with the premise of a course-change or the ethics of carrying it out. It’s easy to tune out principles when there's already plenty of work to do, but you don’t want to pour sweat-equity into a bum approach. Still, don’t be so staunch that you thwart the ability to get much of anything accomplished.

There's a lot more at stake than a few 'innocent' moments of self-gratification. There's nothing 'fun' about harboring an unspoken concern you fear would bring an unceremonious crisis-point. Handle your anxieties about it in tandem with others or risk being the proverbial party-pooper. Withholding your truth smacks of a dangerous power differential.

You don’t have to talk through anything you wish not to discuss just because that's what a certain someone wants. You’re likelier to gain perspective by taking some quiet time for all the latest developments to organically cohere into a sense of clarity. Refuse to get involved until then. They may try to cast you as being difficult, that’s their problem.

Take the lead on time-management rather than letting others consume large chunks of your workday. A supposedly short chat with a friend-in-'crisis' (notice the quotes) may easily extend far beyond the limited time-slot you carved out. Don't dispense with the expected courtesies, but be responsible about how much time you let them take up.

You're experiencing a prominent rise in your 'I want what I want' appetite. That’s OK, but this also happens to be a great time to secure your footing by offering yourself up as a resource to others. You can decide not to pursue exactly what you want right now and invest in incremental gains that buy more fulfillment later.

58 | 10.12.16

You’re ready to start putting the perfect words to whatever conclusions have coalesced into unambiguous clarity. Once you do speak your mind, results may prove louder or bolder than you realize. That's not an excuse for staying mum—just a warning that more of your emotional intensity will make it to the surface. Adjust accordingly.

Your offhand remarks or casual asides could strike others with unintended force, leading to awkward turns in which one or both 'retaliates' by hitting in a spot more tender than the situation warrants. You’re better suited to behind-thescenes reflections than outward-aimed transmissions. Steer away from too many words or too direct a tone.

What’s ideal for you may not be what's best for collaborators. Be aware of this tension, since you might not notice it until after you’re in the thick of something that doesn’t represent your stance. Don’t offer help from the get-go, and you won't feel as beholden to serving others' needs later if you really aren't available.

Your self-possession has more potential to come across more overconfident than you intend. Your justifiable confidence comes off as a desire to hog the spotlight, grandstand or dominate. Resist arguing should someone snip or snivel at you. You have things to do, so reserve your energy, understanding others may lack their own right now.

Stay on the vision level for now. With fresh shoots of sprouting optimism poking their eager heads out, nurture their expression of vulnerable new life without prematurely exposing them to the harsh conditions of the outside world. You’ll be able to get fledgling ideas off the ground in November, so spend this month getting really excited.

Try to isolate your interpersonal affinities from the larger social matrix of overlapping personalities of your nearestand-dearests. You may trust someone in the context of your relationship with them and not agree about everything and everybody else. Build intimacy with close ones by discussing your contrasting views about a particular figure.

BITCH

SESSION If I'm mad enough to go straight past tears to laughing, you should just start running.

Ewww. You got bitterness and jealousy all over my happy contentedness.

You strike me as someone whose bullshit several Atlanta therapists have heard all about. MIDTOWN MUSCLE: It's not my job to play out those tired scenarios from when you peaked in high school.

No matter how hot he is, someone somewhere is sick of his shit.

SEND US YOUR BITCHES! Text 404.969.BTCH, tweet @BitchSessionATL or email bitch@davidatlanta.com *This page reflects the bitchiness of the community not David Atlanta or its publisher (although we’re bitchy too!)

You're pretty uppity for someone who doesn't have a job.

The real winner of the debate was Hillary's colorist. When I read Bitch Session and am so glad none of you are my friends, then realize you totally could be and I wouldn't know it.

I don't meet the low height requirement to ride your emotional roller coaster.

I can't quite tell if you people are on too many drugs or not enough.
