1000 Years Old & Looking Fine

A

s I was reading through my collection of various websites and blogs in boredom during a Real Housewives of New Jersey reunion (I can only watch Teresa roll her eyes so many times), I came across an article saying that the first person to live to be 1000 has already been born. Say what now?! That is pretty incomprehensible when you think about it. But is it farfetched? Call me crazy but medical technology has been advancing rapidly over the last 10-15 years, and after doing some more research on this “mad scientists” claim, it seems that maybe he isn’t wrong. Lots of top scientists have backed up the claim that we will live much longer then we can even imagine thanks to things like nanotechnology and rapid advances in the medical field. Sure, maybe 1000 years is a little farfetched at this point, but what about 150 years? 200 years? Does that really seem out of our grasp down the short road in the future? Diseases are being cured at a rapid rate, and prevention medicine for many diseases have made considerable advances as well. The Human Genome Project looks to open tons of new doors for us as we continue to progress into the future. The questions that aren’t answered yet may not be answered for a long time. The real question is, how old would you want to live if you had the choice? Forever? Some of you might just get the chance to do that.

lthough our culture has made great efforts to recognize a gay presence in what is considered the social mainstream, there is a movement in this country that still exists and is supported that seeks to encourage people to refrain from admitting to their homosexuality and leading full lives as homosexual citizens. Many may have forgot the ex-gay movement, but it is alive and well, with financial and ideological support coming from the conservative religious community. Throw in hurrahs from the political ring, and it adds up to something that, once again, needs to be monitored.

a sin. But according to Dr. Jack Drescher of the APA, this is the most harmful because “when conversion program participants fail to eliminate gay attraction, participants can conclude they are failures, that God doesn’t love them enough, which could cause more emotional distress or suicidal thoughts”, he contends. Some groups even follow specific technique, such as a

The term ‘ex-gay’ was introduced back in the 1980’s, when conservative parents and churches were seeking a response to their disbelief in the coming out process and the continued media exposure of gay involvement and the rise of the attention to the AIDS epidemic. ‘Ex-gay’ described a person who had experienced a basic change in their sexual orientation and led a life as a heterosexual. The first ex-gay ministry that was popularized, Love in Action, offered classes that participants, young and old, could take to ‘attain abstinence from homosexual behaviors, lessening of homosexual temptations and to strengthen their sense of masculine or feminine identity’. This group formed with other organizations under the Exodus Global International Alliance, and its message, spread like wildfire. But the message of changing ones sexual orientation, or SOCE (sexual orientation change efforts) is one that mental health professionals and other LGBT support groups find to be one that is harmful and dangerous.

Homosexuals Anonymous, modeled after the Alcoholics Anonymous twelve-step program. Others, such as Restoration Path, who would not return a phone call for this article, have linked homosexuality with childhood trauma, such as sexual abuse that led to the sexual sin that is homosexuality. Their tagline states that “God is still in the A large body of research and scientific consensus indicates restoration business and He can truly restore the years the that being gay, lesbian, or bisexual is compatible with locusts of sexual and relational sin may have taken from normal mental health and social adjustment. argue that gays shouldn’t be awarded the same civil rights protections as other minorities. Adding to that, the lines have crossed in the matter of it being simply conservative thinking and the role that politics play. In the case of former presidential candidate Michelle Bachman, (R) Minnesota, it provided political fodder and frustration when it was discovered that the Christian counseling service that her husband, Marcus Bachman, used faith-based therapy in an effort to convert clients from homosexuality. Filmed undercover by the gay support group, Truth Won Out, the piece shows a therapist telling his gay identifying client that God created men’s eyes to be attracted to women’s breasts. Rumors surrounding Bachman’s clinic doing this had been swarming for years. The video and the backlash continued to dog Bachman’s campaign, but provided some of the possible reasoning of Bachman’s call as senator in 2004 of an amendment that would to the state constitution that would block gay marriages from other states to be recognized in Minnesota. The long-term effect of the scandal pushed her out of the GOP races. Reaction has come to this issue from the other side to this issue and hopefully will continue. In 2011, the attorney general of the United States, Eric Holder, wrote to the Speaker of the House of Representatives during the

16 // davidatlanta.com

hearings on the Defense of Marriage Act, supporting the scientific conclusion that sexual orientation is an immutable characteristic. And now the California Senate has passed Bill 1172, a direct hit and best response to SOCE programs. Sponsored by Senator Ted Lieu (D), the bill makes California the first state to prohibit a mental health provider from engaging in sexual orientation change efforts with a patient under 18 years of age. Now signed, the bill will take effect January 2013. The efforts to form this bill came from CNN’s Anderson Cooper’s three part series titled ‘ The Sissy Boy Experiment’, where they examined experimental therapy designed to make female boys more masculine. Senator Lieu saw the series and contacted Equality California, the National Center for Lesbian Rights and others to create this legislation that is sure to spark even more debate and critique from the religious right. The bill itself was inclusive to all, but was paired down to minors because they are a more protected class and more vulnerable in this type of practice than adults. It is extremely important t protect youth from what is considered psychological abuse. The people opposing this continue to say same-sex orientation is a learned phenomenon. Does this legitimize not giving human rights and human protection to a certain class of people? Wyler thinks it doesn’t and that his camps are justified in what they do. “Most of the gay world would say the only solution is to embrace it, and if you’re married, divorce your wife, leave your kids, and go with this life. Not everyone is willing to embrace it”, he says. An undercover freelance writer that participated in one of Wyler’s camps, Ted Cox, chronicled his experience and said that some experiments and practices at the weekend he attended seem deemed to find something to blame a person’s homosexuality on. “They will take any sort of negative event in your life, any kind of negative thing in your childhood and say ‘aha! That’s why you are gay’”. Wyler said Cox has some agenda to destroy his organization. Cox said exercises ranged from touching experiments to group therapy sessions. He concludes that what he witnessed was far from scientific or conclusive. Dr. Noriega sums up the goals of what the bill, and the hopes of what it can do. “We are currently living in a social arena where LGBT issues are more prominent in the media, there are increasing numbers of television personalities coming out as gay, and a significant number of influential individuals coming out as straight allies.” And while there are still important obstacles, the gay community has made strides on the road to obtaining full rights as citizens of this country. The shifting of the social fabric in our society may have created less support for sexual orientation change efforts. However, there is still a strong effort to pathologize and change sexual orientation from the conservative religious community. And our youth are the most vulnerable. @DavidAtlantaGA // 17

Who will be the ‘Queen of Queens’? By Lucas Witherspoon

I

f you’ve found yourself longing for a weekly slew of gay puns, heaps of sequins, and a fierce tuck game, you’re in luck. RuPaul is expanding her incredibly successful Drag empire by adding RuPaul’s All Stars Drag Race to the dossier. The show features 12 contestants from the four previous seasons of RuPaul’s Drag Race, who will all be competing against each other for the title Queen of Queens and a place in the Drag Race Hall of Fame (not to mention $100K, a “one of a kind trip,” and a stockpile of MAC cosmetics). A rundown of the cast: Pandora Boxx (Season 2) Dubbed “the Susan Lucci of this competition” by RuPaul for her ability to obliterate her way through challenges without ever actually winning one, Pandora was the runner-up in an online poll that decided which past contestant would appear on the show. Fortunately for Pandora, the winner of the poll, Sharon Needles, decided not to participate in the show after winning her own season, which resulted in Pandora being added to the show’s roster. Tammie Brown (Season 1) Eyebrows. It’s all about the eyebrows. Think about what the lovechild of Tammy Faye Baker and Bette Davis would look like, and you’ve got Tammie. Aside from that messiness, when she told RuPaul and Santino, “I don’t see you out there walking children in nature and taking care of old ladies!” during a heated argument, I was sold. Nina Flowers (Season 1) Nina finished in second place on the first season of Drag Race, which was followed by national and international appearances, a few moderately successful club tracks, and a resident DJ gig at Denver’s largest gay club, Tracks.

Shannel (Season 1) Jujubee (Season 2) JUJUBEE! What is there to say about Noted for her acrobatics on the runway, Jujubee? No one would sooner turn me Shannel appeared on Drag U, one of the few season one contestants asked to into a rice queen than Jujubee. After appear, after finishing fourth on Drag coming in third on her season of Drag Race behind Raven and Tyra Sanchez, Race. By comparison, Shannel’s kept a relatively low profile, but her return to television is a much- she went on to become a professor on Drag U. Despite All welcomed one. Stars’ five bag maximum (I know drag queens who carry that many bags for a single appearance), Jujubee still managed to lug along 40 wigs, which in itself is destined to Mimi Imfurst (Season 3) make for a ferocious show. Since being eliminated from Drag Race, Mimi has been touring the world with Yara Sofia (Season 3) her all-girl pop group, Xelle (pronounced Echa pa’lante! Expect to hear that phrase “XL”), the first to feature two girls and no fewer than 100 times. Yara could be a drag queen. She promises to bring “a best described as Charo on steroids. lot of fierce clothes, a suitcase full of Absolut vodka, and It’s going to take a heavy dosage of Oxy a whole lot of party” (a.k.a. my typical Friday night) to All combined with copious amounts of booze Stars. Let’s just hope she can manage to keep everyone on to tolerate that goddamned Puerto Rican accent, but I the ground this season. know Yara will make for savage competition. Manila Luzon (Season 3) Alexis Mateo (Season 3) After appearing on the third season of Post-Drag Race, Alexis continued Drag Race, Manila went on to perform at performing nationally, became an HIV/ several major Gay Pride events, become AIDS activist, and, along with Yara Sofia, a prominent HIV/AIDS activist, and was made headlines in April 2011 after they a drag professor on Drag U. He released launched a boycott of a Tampa beauty of cover of the duet “Baby It’s Cold Outside” along with his boyfriend and fellow Drag Race contestant Antoine Ashley supply shop after they both alleged they were told to leave the store because of their sexual orientation. Between (Sahara Davenport), whose untimely death due to heart Yara’s “Echa pa’lante!” and Alexis’ “BAM!,” this is clearly failure on October 1 will certainly be commemorated in going to be a season of banal taglines. some form on the show. Chad Michaels (Season 4) Despite barely having time to wash the blood off her hands from last season, Chad Michaels, Cher’s drag doppelgänger, is back and “bringing perfection.” Raven (Season 2) Considered the “villain” of season two, Raven went on to appear on America’s Next Top Model as part of a photo shoot, was featured in a Nip/Tuck commercial promoting the show’s syndicated run on Logo, and made a guest appearance on the Logo reality series, Pretty Hurts. Latrice Royale (Season 4) LATRICE-MOTHERFUCKING-ROYALE. The queen on one-liners who has given birth to countless GIFs has attained a cult following and legendary status, not to mention giving me my new life motto: “5 Gs, please: Good God, Get a Grip, Girl.”

The catch this season is that the queens aren’t competing as individuals, but in teams of two. The teams are: Team Latrila (Latrice Royale and Manila Luzon) Team Yarlexis (Alexis Mateo and Yara Sofia) Team Mandora (Mimi Imfurst and Pandora Boxx) Team Rujubee (Raven and Jujubee) Team Shad (Shannel and Chad Michaels) Team Brown Flowers (Tammie Brown and Nina Flowers) RuPaul, Michelle Visage, and Santino Rice will all return as judges, with Rosie Perez, Ross Matthews, Rachel Hunter, Vickie Lawrence, Busy Phillips, Rachel Dratch (!!!), Janice Dickinson, Wendy McClendon-Covey, Elvira, Beth Ditto, and Cheri Oteri acting as guest judges. RuPaul’s All Stars Drag Race premieres Monday, October 22 at 9 PM ET/PT on Logo with a special “Rupersized” episode containing 10 bonus minutes, followed by the premiere of the companion series Untucked: All Stars, which will air directly after All Stars each week.

ISTER originated as Midtown’s testing site for HIV three years ago. A department of Positive Impact, MISTER is actually a community outreach center unlike any others Atlanta has to offer. In addition to HIV testing as a complimentary service, MISTER also offers free diagnosis on other possible conditions including gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis. Always confidential, MISTER is a pioneering community located on 60 11th Street striving to implement programs which might seem unorthodox, but are actually backed up by empirical studies. It is up to the community whether these programs continue to exist. From holistic services to book clubs, MISTER goes far and beyond any other Atlanta testing site as it provides you with a welcoming face even after diagnosis rather than the sometimes standard, sterile feel of other testing sites. One of MISTER’s unique attributes is their strong conviction in the powerful connection between the human body and mind’s spiritual essence, which ultimately results in an unbeatable formula for self-healing. As prevention specialist Chandler Bearden explains, “When you observe the transition between a patient placed in a room filled with stressful triggers like fearful and hateful images, their immunity level drops while a patient placed in a room with calming, serene stimuli actually gains a significant boost in their immunity level. The resulting fluctuation in immunity derived from these stress-related variables implores us to investigate further into this phenomenon.”

It is through these studies that MISTER continues to evolve beyond the stereotypical testing site or community outreach program. Funded by generous grants stemming from the CDC, Fulton County Human Services, and others, MISTER possesses the resources to generate an incredibly knowledgeable and affectionate staff that undergo a screening process which prioritizes a background in psychology, warmth over clinical, openness over scripted, and informative over preachy. This formula has everything you need to resolve any questions you may have in your limitless quest to empower your life as the most common questions concern internal doubts of “Do I need to stop having sex? Is my life over? Who do I need to tell? What do I need to know?” Their risk reduction counselors are trained to provide all the information and resources you need no matter what your age, ethnicity, or economic level is. MISTER is all about your wellbeing. MISTER’s allies include other Atlanta-based outreach programs such as the Armorettes and The Sisters of the Perpetual Indulgence who also use revolutionary means of outreach like traversing through Atlanta’s streets in nun outfits and painted white faces to promote a selfless message of awareness. So it is no wonder MISTER’s history involves pioneering methodologies of

After screening submitted testimonials, his intent for this specific portion of the site is to provide a gallery of some sort, of others in your community who have gone through what you currently fear or may have doubts of. he Alliance Theatre, Atlanta’s Tony Award winning regional theatre company, will present the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning musical Next to Normal beginning October 17 and running until November 11, 2012. Recently we were able to speak with Marietta native (and Pebblebrook High School alum) Cary Tedder, who stars as Gabe in the pop-rock musical that deals with everything from mental illness, to death, and high school love.

begin to feel dated once breakthroughs to help mental illness are found but Tedder says “Every piece is a period piece. We are living in an age of shared knowledge and immense learning. As my generation grows and develops, so will our understanding of the world. Through exceptional art and moving performances I know we are taking the steps towards a greater truth.”

Tom Kitt (who worked with the Alliance last season on the now Broadway musical Bring It On) created the pop-rock “This is the most fascinating role I’ve ever taken on. Hay Teamm8’s

Fall Collection

By Rafael Morales

M

ichal Nicolas launched teamm8 from his living room four years ago with two styles of underwear. At the time, he operated and managed every facet of the business on his own. That quickly changed as his designs acquired a large following, especially in the USA. Today, the line has grown to include a wide range underwear, swimwear, and now, athletic wear. “Our customer wants stylish gear that makes them stand out from the crowd,” says the out designer. “We offer fashion forward clothing that guys can take from the gym to a lunch date, or just hang around in all day.” The company adheres to strict rules. All gear must be timeless, stylish, of top-quality, versatile, sexy, athletic, masculine, and must project confidence. According to Nicolas, teamm8 produces ‘clothes that guys wear, not clothes that wear guys.’ What the hay is up with teamm8 this season? (Laughing) Yeah, we’ve gone all country this season. I wanted something a little different. I also wanted a feeling of nostalgia for this campaign. I really love what we’ve come up with. What are you most excited about this season? I’m really excited about our new Patriot collection. We’ve stepped it up from our previous underwear collections. We now have waistbands with a deconstructed flag of countries like the USA, Canada, Brazil and Australia. They look fantastic and I think our guys will love them.

@DavidAtlantaGA // 43

Why did you name your fall collection ‘Dream. Love. Live.”? Teamm8 has always been about aspiration. It’s what I founded the brand on. So it’s really just an affirmation of where we came from and how we adhere to those brand values. We see life as something to throw yourself into whole heartedly. This collection is designed to dress you while you do that. Would you say that you embody that message?  This is going to sound corny but founding teamm8 and watching it grow into the brand it is today is my personal example of having a dream and being fortunate enough to live it. Was building your dream everything you imagined it would be? Make no mistake about it, it didn’t come without it’s share of blood, sweat and tears. But anyone with a dream they are working towards can tell you that and it’s definitely worth everything you go through to make it a realization. How have you incorporated ‘love’ into your life? I wear my heart on my sleeve. It doesn’t always produce the best results but it’s the only way I know how to operate. I also think with my heart, even when it comes to business. Again, not always with the best outcome but it’s never been about money for me. Of course I wanted teamm8 to be successful, but just doing something I love is what drives me. What do you do to bring ‘life’ to your life? For me, it’s that old saying that if you love what you do, then it doesn’t feel like work. Anyone who knows me can tell you that the last five years of my life have literally been teamm8. I knew going into this that I had to commit myself 100% and I was prepared to do that. But I have made a decision this year to spend more time with my loved ones and enjoy that part of life more. Without it I would have no inspiration and not much to offer creatively.

Does the founder of Teamm8 play hard? I’m not boring but I would be lying to you if I said I party hard. Don’t get me wrong, I love switching off and having a good time. I especially love my down time, but I’m not a burn the candles at both ends kind of guy. Give me great company, great food and wine and I’m the happiest person in the world. Will Hoodies be all the rage this fall and winter? Hoodies have become a staple for teamm8. I started off doing a cut off hoodie a couple of seasons back and now it’s one of our best sellers. This season we’ve introduced the Goal and Touchdown Hoodies which have such a great sporty look and will look great layered up in cooler weather or look really sexy worn solo in summer. Where do we get the teamm8 bandana that the model is wearing in the shoot? The bandana has become an accidental addition to the teamm8 collection! We created it for the photo shoot but didn’t intend to produce them. But we’ve had such a great response to it that it is now be available for sale. Such a cool retro look, I love it! It’s also available in Black.

What’s a typical day like for you? The thing I love about my job the most is that every single day is completely different. Mostly I am working on design, marketing and brand direction. A lot of time is also filled with model scouting and photo shoots. So on any given day I can be doing any one or all of those things! Do you get to rest a bit before launching into next season? The design, sampling and production process is a long laborious one. There is no time for much rest in between collections. I’m well into the design of the 2013 Spring/ Summer collection and I’m thrilled with the way it’s looking so far. Expect the unexpected!
