Are You Proud?

M

y boyfriend and I were driving in the car last week when he stopped and looked at me and said “are you proud of being gay?” The out of nowhere question caught me off guard, and I thought quietly for a moment and said, “Absolutely”. I stand as a proud gay man because I love the person I am, and can celebrate the fact I am different. My differences are what make me, and you, unique. For some of you this is your first pride. Welcome! Don’t be scared or intimidated; we were all new to Pride’s craziness at some point. We all remember our first parade, and the intense feeling of being out, gay and free. We certainly remember the half-naked tranny on the float and the hot make out session in the back of Blake’s. Enjoy these moments, cherish them, because they will last you a lifetime. For some of you, this is your (insert number of years) Pride. However, each year that we celebrate another Pride, we tend to forget a little bit about how special it is to us deep down. This weekend, take a moment while bar-hopping to celebrate the LGBT pioneers who allowed us to celebrate freely, and set the standard for the next generation of gays, to be better than we are today. It is with that I say have a safe Pride, and make some fun (and dirty) memories. Oh, and enjoy the NEW David Atlanta Magazine. Proud,

The “Uncut” Director’s Look Inside Today’s Porn Industry By Sam Gabel

W

ho would have ever suspected that a small town boy from Minnesota would end up rising to the very top of the porn industry food chain? And that I would be the one interviewing him on one quiet Saturday afternoon at 1pm Los Angeles time, of course. As I anxiously anticipated what kind of persona I would meet at the other side of the line and of the wild shenanigans he might have gotten himself into the prior night, the tone of his greeting proved me otherwise. It was completely opposite of his voicemail’s standard statement: “You’ve reached Larry. God knows where I am.” Instead, his voice was professional and sorrowful: the strength of his exhausted lips that could barely form words, the silent communication of I will always be a shoulder for you to cry on—no matter what state I’m in.

16 // davidatlanta.com

As some of you are familiar with Chi Chi through some of his visual artwork from the porn industry, my first acquaintance with the director was through reading Aiden’s Shaw’s sentimental confession: Sordid Truths. The image I had in my head of Chi Chi fit in the category of the eternal mother in the porn industry, traversing through a journey full of constant heartache and fulfillment: both unattainable without the other. “I have a sit down with everybody before they do it. I have my guidelines and I have my things that I tell them. If they’re not prepared, nothing you say or do can help them prepare.” It was like the stern hand of love that can only be offered, but ultimately, it’s up to us whether we accept it or not. And even though today, dozens of boys are knocking on Chi Chi’s door begging for stardom, it can be quite intimidating to sit before this legendary set

of eyes who has already foreseen the glimmers of future’s uninhibited glory and shameful deteriorations. “I’m a pretty good judge of character, not just in porn, but in every other aspects of life. A picture starts the process, but I have to speak to someone on the telephone and meet them. You get a feel for them; you get them to ask the questions. I’ve seen people who have come in with all the gusto and bravado and fail miserably. I’ve seen guys who come in shy and conservative, but they then end up as the best sexual performers.” As I contemplated about the difference of characters that inevitably create that empathy which transports us to the emotional push and pull of desire that we can see through our computer monitors or television screens, perhaps it was the struggle and the revelation of new, untapped emotions that these “quiet ones” exhibited when performing on screen for the first time. And like that newborn’s first laugh, we are reminded of the magical miracle that is life. “You got to have some form of passion and desire to erotically charge people. A lot of modern actors are in it for the money, but it doesn’t take that. Sometimes, it’s the eyes that can be the most sexual organ. Sometimes touching and kissing can be the hottest part of a video. Sometimes a person’s sensitivity and sensuality overrides any animalistic instincts.” For someone to hold such insight as Chi Chi did, I mistakenly inquired about how in awe I was of his passion and continuous evolution through each shoot. But I was wrong. “I’ve been doing this for twenty-eight years, and I’m jaded. There’s these clubs, and these naked boys and dancing, and people are asking me ‘how on earth can you not be concentrating?’ It’s just another day at the office to me. I’ve been looking at butts and ‘perfection’ everyday now. I think a lot of the porn being shot today are pretty boring and paint by number. It’s all about the reaction of the man’s face. I recently shot a scene where a guy jerks off another guy through his jeans, and they never even take off their clothes. It’s all about the evocation a scene can provoke in your imagination. That’s what’s sexy.” Maybe today’s porn was now molded to fit a societal standard of mass consumption where vintage bareback was an unexplored taboo instead of a cutthroat business decision to boost sales. Chi Chi had seen it and done it all from staying up late doing drugs and drinking even at notorious locations such as our very own Backstreet, from touring all over from Australia to Paris, to witnessing first hand his closest friends die of disease and depression, from surviving three bypass surgeries and losing over 150 pounds. It was perhaps time to write a memoir, I suggested. “I actually

wrote a book a long time ago when it was probably too early for me to write. Back when my ego was starting to go through the roof as a publishing house approached me, but I’m sober now. I’m blessed that I’ve got to meet a lot of my heroes like Elton John and Boy George who reached out to me. I don’t regret any of it though; it’s part of the learning process. I have my own company Channel 1 Releasing, and my own store in Hollywood—it’s a boutique and gorgeous. I have amazing friends who are not limited by time and space, I have amazing business partners—I’ve been pretty lucky. The universe brings people to you and there’s a reason for everything. It’s a big fabulous universe.”

I’ve seen people who have come in with all the gusto and bravado and fail miserably. I’ve seen guys who come in shy and conservative, but they then end up as the best sexual performers. As he apologized to me for the need to cut off the interview to prepare for his DJ gig that night, I had learned through an unfiltered lens a raw look inside this infamous gay icon that no camera could ever capture. From the young, insecure boy who didn’t dare take off his clothes at the swimming pool to the young man sneaking into theaters obsessed with observing the process of liberation these actors possessed, to the transitioning drag diva transcending all social expectations, to the performer who gathered a performance troupe called the “Weather Gals” as an homage to the “Weather Girls” and striving to bring laughter and joy to Minnesota’s beginning drag scene. Chi Chi has worked to reach the very vulnerable top of the entertainment summit and yet still keeping the sometimes suffocating, and uncompromising, hope in finding the good in people, and taking one day at a time. Chi Chi is also looking forward to riding in the David Atlanta Pride Floats (In partnership with Gayborhood and Brushstrokes), signing and greeting at Brushstrokes, attending the Georgia Aquarium pride party, while quietly staring in the reflection at glimpses of the former boy within. “I do my best to teach, not preach. Offer them guidance. If not, at least I’ve tried.”

50 Cent took to Twitter to announce that he’s practicing abstinence and shunning masturbation, saying in a series of tweets: “Masturbation is a sin, you stop right now fool! God is watching you. Step 1. To avoid the urge to masturbate, stop going to porn sites. Step 2. Make a conscious decision not to turn your head after people walk by you. Step 3. Do not go to strip clubs. Step 4. Do not look at lust filled magazines.” Considering practically every doctor will tell you masturbation is healthy, I’m gonna follow the advice of the guy with the MD, not the rapper who doesn’t even have a high school diploma.

Lindsay Lohan was allegedly assaulted in her hotel room by a man—identified as Christian LaBella, a staffer for Republican congressman John Shimkus of Illinois—who she met at a nightclub in NYC. After Lilo noticed him taking pictures of her, she confronted him, which is when he threw her on the bed, causing her to sustain scratches. She then reportedly ran out of the room, and when she returned, he “attacked her, choked her, threw her to the ground, and climbed on top of her.” Eventually one of Lilo’s friends managed to pull him off of her and she pulled the fire alarm to call for help, leading to his arrest as he was trying to flee the hotel. LaBella was initially charged with two misdemeanor counts of assault and two counts of harassment before having the charges dropped after police say there was not enough evidence to support Lindsay’s claims. Now why would Lilo be so worried about these pictures? Clearly they must have been of her gardening and doing charity work, because we all know she’d never put herself in a compromising situation.

ride’s entertainment lineup this year is brimming with talent, from Atlanta-area celebrities like Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls to up-and-coming pop sensation Rita Ora. With Saturday evening’s headline performer, though, Atlanta Pride gets an international dose of dance when Andy Bell takes the stage.

Aside from your appearance at Atlanta Pride, what are you doing these days? Well, my ex-partner passed away this April, so I have literally been dealing with loads of red tape and coping with all the emotional turmoil which that entails. It isn’t easy. I’m also getting stuff together for a green card when it rains it pours - and I did two Atlantis Cruises, which I love ‘cause I can do standards with a live band and jazzy versions of Erasure tunes. I’m basically looking forward to my new life with my partner Steve and writing songs with Dave Aude in LA.

Bell is primarily known for his role as lead singer of Erasure. The English duo is known mainly in the U.S. for their synthpop hits “Chains of Love” and “A Little Respect,” both of which were hits in the late 80s. In their native England, the duo garnered 24 consecutive Top 20 hits between 1986 and 1997. Erasure continues making music to this day; their most recent album, 2011’s What in your mind makes for a good Pride Tomorrow’s World, includes the single “Be With You,” celebration? which peaked at #7 on Billboard’s Hot Dance Club Songs chart. Dance music is dominating American music charts these days. Are there any particular artists who stand out to you?

I think the more people come out the merrier. When the general population starts to finally realize that we are all “normal” and sexuality is an infinite expression of the human heart and soul, the better! It still pisses me off when you see Simon Cowell wincing at a black guy in a wedding dress and patronizing them. That’s the “machismo” of the industry. They would much rather that you weren’t out because supposedly it “damages” record sales...not people!

Nicki Minaj and Rihanna are my favorites.

One component of being a musician that’s really blown up in the last few years is interacting with fans, which so many artists do through Twitter or Facebook. tlanta Pride 2012 is upon us! You’re here, you’re queer, and – although you may not realize it yet – you’re gonna need David Atlanta’s advice on how to navigate the many in’s and out’s of

where to go, what to do, and how to survive the whole damn thing. So before you go traipsing off into Piedmont Park, sucking down enough beer and cocktails to float the Queen Mary, and forgetting you were even here, commit the following advice to memory. Or, at least try to. You’ll be glad you did…trust us. 56 // davidatlanta.com

BOYS WILL DO BOYS >> We all know that the real reason you’re here this weekend is to show your rainbow-flag-waving, honoring-your-forebears gay pride. Riiight. And the other real reason you’re here is to scope out all the hot men in almost nothing outfits. Although the Atlanta Pride festival is no longer held in the sweltering Southern summer months, when the only thing that flowed more freely than alcohol was the sweat, we can almost guarantee you’ll find plenty of other two-legged reasons to work up a sweat – even in these cooler climes of mid-October. As it is with staking out a prime stand-and-pose spot in the bars, you might think that finding the best place to ogle the boys at Pride would be location, location, location. However, there’s such a smorgasbord of sinful inspiration here stretching off into every direction that you can’t really pinpoint any one key strategy. To that end, David advises you to keep your eyes open if you want to find a prospective hookup…or hookups. Since the gorgeous guys will be swarming all over the park, you’d best be advised to just put one foot in front of the other and see where your eyes and your head (the one down there) lead you. Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with that juicy hunk who is the living embodiment of the expression “sex on two legs,” because if the heat is there, you’ll both feel it. Remember, this is Pride, where the vibe is all about fun, fun, fun and letting down your inhibitions in both personal expression and in making new friends. If, however, you go to bed with David Beckham or Jake Gyllenhaal and wake up with Steve Buscemi or Lyle Lovett, we just hope you do wake up first because you’re gonna have to use all your sharpest strategies – and your lightest moves – to ease off the bed and out the door undetected. Frankly, we don’t know how you’re gonna manage such a herculean feat, because you never know which clever tricks have their love dungeons booby trapped. But if you do make it out the door, run like hell! And for the love of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, DON’T look back, like all the idiots do in horror movies. You just left a horror show yourself! IN RECOVERY >> We’re not referring to all three of you who are on the wagon and are resisting the bacchanalia of booze that’s available at Pride, either being sold by vendors or offered by your new best friends from their coolers.

No, when we say “in recovery,” we’re thinking of those of you who have gotten shitfaced on beers and other libations sold by vendors as well as any mixed drinks you may whip up at your portable bar at your stakeout site. One of the worst things you can do – other than doing Jäger shots every time you see a rainbow flag – is to not adequately hydrate yourself. So even if it pains you to take away space in your cooler that could be otherwise devoted to those extra bottles of Sweetwater or cans of PBR, we strongly advise you to stock up on bottled water too, or patronize the beverage tents where water will be available for sale. And try to drink as much water as possible inbetween those liquid doses of your favorite poisons, because if you’re pissing all that alcohol away and you’re only refueling with more booze, you deserve a big spanking. With all that having been said, we at David can try to mother you until the fairies come home, but we know that – like all children – you’re going to rebel against our preventative advice and you’re going to get some pretty nasty hangovers. To that end, here are a few helpful hints for recovering and getting back on your twinkle-toes in no time: Drink several large glasses of water and take a couple of aspirin or ibuprofen before bedtime (or, after the orgy and before you pass out from exhaustion). If you’re all weird about taking medications after you’ve been drinking nonstop all day, you can take a vitamin C tablet instead and drink a big glass of orange juice. Eat a breakfast or other meal that has plenty of greasy, fried goodies. It’ll help coat the lining of your tummy. Lots of great options for this at the Pride food vendors… and an Atlanta staple late night treat, Waffle House. Eat salty foods like potato chips, French fries, or other grub to help replace all the salt your body loses when you drink. Again, the food vendors can hook you up here. Remember, most importantly of all, have a great and safe pride!

Calisto Harvalias certainly is a guy that you turn your head for when he walks by, and his sexy DIAGEO men that work with him are an added bonus. How does one get blessed to be surrounded by sexy guys all day long? Well we wanted to know also. David Atlanta had a chance to catch up with DIAGEO superstar Calisto to ask him the fundamental questions on DIAGEO’s Pride 365 initiative, 10 years as an Atlanta Pride sponsor, and where he finds these hot male models we love to see (shirtless). “I’ve traveled all over the world modeling/acting and I decided it was time to plant roots somewhere because I wasn’t getting any younger! I did a lot of soul searching and went back to hair school. While at Paul Mitchell I began promoting with DIAGEO. Back then, there were few promos in the LGBT market and mostly just during pride season. I saw the potential of the LGBT market as a wonderful subject to expand our promotions to. I told the executives at DIAGEO my idea. DIAGEO was so gracious to listen to my suggestions/ideas and were so supportive even if some of them were not members of the LGBT community.” It wasn’t soon after that Calisto was all over the city promoting DIAGEO (the makers of some of our favorite brands including Ketel One, Smirnoff, and Tanqueray) in the LGBT bars to show how one company can express love and acceptance in such a strong and unique LGBT community. 64 // davidatlanta.com

“The beauty of DIAGEO is we are a huge family and are all very close. I am blessed to work with such a large company that lets me be ME - outspoken, wild personality and all!”   With the assistance of Managing Director of DIAGEO, Frank Mendez, they have really set a footprint in the Atlanta LGBT community, not just in monetary donations, but by actually showing up and showing face at events, and keeping DIAGEO’s high standards in tact. “As for my gorgeous male models, I hand pick these handsome gentlemen from all over the city and I make sure they hold a passion about DIAGEO Pride 365 as much as I do. I’m like a proud father with my models, I always make sure they are not just physically beautiful but they have a personality that matches their striking looks.” This is such a milestone and landmark year for Smirnoff and DIAGEO because 2012 marks Smirnoff’s 10th consecutive year sponsoring Atlanta Pride and the Atlanta PRIDE Committee.   “I am so proud to represent such a loyal and respected brand to the LGBT community, so on that note, remember to SUPPORT THE SPIRITS THAT SUPPORT YOU AS YOU and that smooth spirit is SMIRNOFF!”

SHOWING MY TRUE COLORS!

Y

ay, it’s Gay Pride! Tis the season to be jolly, fa la la la la la la la laaaaaaaa. Never forget that GAY originally meant HAPPY. But if you’ve denied yourself happiness this year, now is the time to go all out, be you and be HAPPY about it! It’s time to remind Atlanta, “Oh don’t get it twisted, we are PROUD to be exactly who we are!” And for you hot masculine gay boys who wouldn’t be caught dead at a Lady Gaga concert, we don’t expect you to throw on a dress or march in a parade, but honey, at least wear a t-shirt that says “I’m GAY and HAPPY about it”. And for you fag hags or “fruit flies”, you should be celebrating too. Without us, how could you possibly become the FABULOUS women you are today?! Remember honey, without the FAIRY Godmother, no one gave a shit about Cinderalla! For you straight boys who chose us to be our friend (cough), same to you, we helped you with that extra flair to be so debonair…not to mention a better understanding of a woman. But for ALL of us, we need to celebrate the lesbians, because without them, nothing would get fixed! The other importance of pride being once a year is it’s also a reminder to celebrate YOU! “YOU Pride” should always be your biggest celebration. Child, can I tell you, my pride actually started a couple weeks ago

66 // davidatlanta.com

after one of my weekly show (INSERT SHAMLESS PLUG à The Price is Right LIVE show that I do at Joe’s on Juniper every Tuesday at 8pm). Ok, so this pretty straight girl walked into my dressing room (the ladies restroom, it’s showbizness child), and was like “Wow I LOVE your show and I LOVE you… (beat)…I gotta take your picture”. Well I was butt ass naked except for my dance belt, pink pumps, and a big ole’ loud pink wig. She said “Ooooh, please put on one of your costume pieces you had on tonight or something for the photo”. Child, as I was about to put on something, I glanced in the mirror, changed my mind, leaned towards the wall, stroke a pose, and said “take it just like this”. And without a beat, she said “YESSSSSSS! That’s perfect!” and we had one ole’ grand photoshoot! I was having one of those nights where I was FEELING it…feeling the POWER of being myself, and of being in the moment. The kind of moment where you feel like you’re ALIVE and not apologizing for who you are …at least not in this moment! Remember, our flag is a RAINBOW, and I am NOT about to live in Black and White for NO ONE! Until next week… COME SEE ME AT DAVID ATLANTA MAGAZINE PRIDE BOOTH!

P

erhaps some of you remember those nights at Backstreet when you went for a different reason than the unspoken, drunken unknowing we all remember. Do you ever reminisce going upstairs and laughing your ass off from watching and hearing Lady Bunny’s outrageous visual and audio performance? Starting her career from Atlanta, the Bunny is returning to perform at Burkhart’s on October 13 & October 14 2012. Since then, she has been busy from roasting Pamela Anderson, hosting opening numbers for Carrie Bradshaw to dance to, to appearing on Will & Grace, and so much more. As a boy originating from a small town in Tennessee, what prompted your career in the Atlanta drag-scene? I love my mom but she was no glamourpuss! So when I first encountered drag queens like Tasha Khan, Adrian Sanchez and Mr. Della Reese at Chattanooga’s Go-Go Club I was completely hooked. I’d never seen such magical “women” before and was immediately drawn to them. We got the gay magazines from Atlanta in Chattanooga and so I was a fan of the big queens like Lily White, Charlie Brown, Hot Chocolate and Dina Jacobs long before I ever got a chance

74 // davidatlanta.com

to see them perform. I just had dinner with Dina in Houston. To me, these girls will always be superstars. So, where does your specific sense of style come from? I don’t kid myself that I am a fashion plate who can wear any style. But I have decent legs so I usually wear minis. I also like bold prints and sparkly fabrics--who wants to see a drag queen in a demure Laura Ashley print? How did the inspiration originate for your organization of the annual outdoor drag festival known as “Woodstock?” When I left Atlanta for New York, my home club was the Pyramid. I was blown away by the amount of talent there and thought that it could surely reach a larger audience. So we left the club and got a permit for a nearby park and threw an all-day festival. The first one wasn’t all that, but we eventually got the hang of it and it ran for over 20 years. What is the best form of advice you can give to future generations of aspiring drag queens? Do something unique! If you want someone to fly you around the country to perform and all you do is lip-synch to Rihanna, they’ve already got 10 of those queens in every city. But if you put your own twist on it, you stand out. Do you have any current projects or upcoming plans in the works? Yes! I’m working on some original music. And I’ve just done a YouTube video which parodies the Scissor Sister’s “Let’s Have a Kiki “called “Let’s Have a Kai Kai” about drag on drag love. It will be on my next DVD coming soon. You utilize a lot of creative methodologies in your blog to get your point across. Materials can include social satire on “media mongers” such as Chris Crocker as you plead with the audience in an over-the-top tone of “Leave Mitt Romney Alone!” As if you rearrange the letters in “Romney,” it translates to “R Money.” How did your wicked, unorthodox sense of humor develop? My blog is very schizophrenic. Sometimes it’s cornball humor and sometimes it’s very political and serious. People don’t always expect drag queens to be political but let’s not forget that it was the queens and transsexuals who started Stonewall, which gave birth to this country’s gay rights movement. Drag queens think outside the box and when

much of our TV news is based on lies and/or covering the wrong stories, I like to give an opinion which is not watered down. Unlike the news, I don’t have corporate sponsors to worry about pleasing. Even the liberal news MSNBC is owned by GE. GE is a war profiteer so MSNBC soft-pedals these wars we shouldn’t be in. And GE also pays about 7% of their 35% corporate tax rate and they want to keep it that way. So unfortunately, MSNBC is not really all that liberal. I noticed that on your website (LadyBunny. Net), you promote a DVD which highlights the progression of your career titled “Rated X (for X-tra retarded)”. Could this title possibly reflect a satire on the social pattern that such celebrities utilize in order to promote their career further such as in the case of Paris Hilton, Justin Beiber, and Katy Perry? I’m not known for my political correctness. But at the time I put that video out, retarded was not as taboo a word as it has become. I wouldn’t use that word again in a title. It might offend Bubba D. Licious. So we’re dying to know the answer to the age-old riddle: Which came first? The Bunny or the Gaga? Actually, it was The Lady Chablis! Or the Lady Shabby, as I like to call her. Honestly, “Lady” is a name that many drag queens use so I can’t claim it. And there was also Lady Miss Kier from Deee-Lite. For More on the Bunny: Visit LadyBunny.Net – Don’t Forget to Sign Up for her “She-Mail.” You can find Lady Bunny performing at Burkhart’s on October 13th and 14th.

Were you surprised when “Land of the Living,” “One More Try,” “Feel What You Want,” and “Lovin’ You” became four of your most well-known chart-topping hits? What is New York definitely taught me. How did a young girl who started performing in Las Vegas shows end up transitioning into becoming an international pop music sensation? As I said, my parents didn’t want me to go into a musical career. My mom was a singer and sang six nights a week. She didn’t have the luxury of putting as much passion into it because she made sure to do her best so that her kids wouldn’t have to go through the path of a hard life. The music industry is tough; she didn’t want me to go through what she did. She sang six nights a week to support us. During her daily routine of practice, she had tons of catalogs full of music, and I would sing along with her when I was growing up. So I would go from audition to audition and actually received lots of varying offers from jazz to country. I learned so much about music from spending time with my mom, but I had always known I wanted to do house music. I hired a couple of guys and our performances eventually got bigger and bigger. I was getting a nice paycheck, and everything was comfortable, but it was one certain moment when I was performing with these dancers and DJs that I realized I needed to get out there and put my music in the world. It was definitely terrifying to leave that safety net behind but I knew I would never be able to touch people with my music unless I got out there.

“...as I looked into the crowd there was mostly this naked mass of thousands of shirtless men, and it was one of those

So he divorced his family and it was that temporal space and distance which allowed him to discover who he really is. Now he and his family are closer than ever because of it. Do you have any future projects in the works such as a memoir of your travels and the people you’ve met?

Oh God, I have too many ideas running through my head. The only thing I don’t have enough is time. I am definitely thinking the sky’s the limit, but there’s only so much time Has there been a moment in your career that in the world and I got a couple of kids, and I have a big made you realize that there is no more room family in Washington state and I just don’t want to miss for doubts: I’ve finally done it—I’ve actually those “moments,” you know?
