“Choosing where to study is one of the most difficult decisions a musician ever makes. You need teachers of international reputation, individuals who are experienced in working with the most gifted musicians of their generation and accustomed to unlocking potential you may never have dreamed of. You want plenty of opportunity to perform at the highest level, as a soloist or an ensemble player. You require an environment that nurtures and challenges, an atmosphere rich in artistic stimulus with practical resources that reflect and serve your ambition, in order to develop your talent to the full. You need to live in a city with a cultural life that is unsurpassed anywhere in the world. You deserve to study at an institution which takes your musical future seriously from the day you arrive, and works with you to ensure that you enjoy lifelong success and fulfilment from your music. We hope that the pages that follow give you an idea of what it’s like to be a student at the Royal College of Music, London. Remember, you can email your questions to the addresses displayed in each section, and do check www.rcm.ac.uk regularly for the latest information.”

Professor Colin Lawson Director MA(Oxon), MA, PhD, DMus, FRCM, FLCM

Whether you are from the UK or are coming to us from further afield, you will feel at home at the RCM. Located at the heart of South Kensington, the College is surrounded by culture, with the Royal Albert Hall, the Natural History Museum (below), Science Museum and the V&A among its neighbours. If you are an international student, you’ll find that more than a third of RCM students are from outside the UK, providing a rich cultural community. Many professors have international performing and teaching careers. London itself is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world, with frequent visits from internationally renowned musicians who conduct RCM ensembles, give masterclasses and lead workshops. Many significant figures of the international music profession are former students of the RCM. Read on to see where they are performing, singing, working and teaching.
