Dear Friends Everybody loves a celebration. They are highlights in our lives that wonderfully punctuate the normal. Over the month of June, we have a number of them. In the churches calendar we have Pentecost (Whit Sunday) and Trinity Sunday. Trinity Sunday is very special this year because Holy Trinity in Sketty Park is celebrating 50 years of witness on the estate. Sketty parish will be congregating there for a celebratory service and then two weeks later we all meet there for our Ministry Area service.

The day before our MA service, on the 29th June, some of us will have been at the Cathedral celebrating Sister Marian’s Ordination to the Diaconate. The office of Deacon is mentioned frequently in the New Testament and the name is derived from the word servant. Many a vicar may have taken this very literally in the past when a newly deaconed curate came to the parish but it is an important role in the three-fold ministry of the Anglican Church Deacons, Priests and Bishops. In the early church they held

very important roles and, in the modern church, the Deacon has become a step on the path to being ordained a priest, though some do choose to stay in the premiant deaconate finding their ideal ministry there. Helping in services, preaching, baptising, proclaiming the peace and standing at the side of the priest at the altar are some of the liturgical roles the Deacon undertakes.

In parish life generally, in a reflection of their role in the early church, the Deacon has an important pastoral role as well with the sick and the needy.

A month then full of celebration and I know you will all want to join me in celebrating 50 years with the Holy Trinity congregation and Sister Marian at her ordination.

Parish News Killay We pray for those who are ill at home, in hospitals or nursing homes. Our thoughts and prayers are also with those who lovingly care for them day by day: Phyllis Harris, Emlyn Bawden, Joan Dobbs, Eunice Miron, Fr. After the 11 o’clock service in St. Hilary’s we will be having a party in the Parish Hall to celebrate Pentecost.

Please pray for a dry day as we would like to make use of our wonderful garden. There will be refreshments and traditional party games.

Our tots group runs on a Friday 1-2.30

Since having the garden fenced our numbers have increased substantially, last Friday we had 20 children!

Eden bus

For the last three months Clyne Trinity have had the use of the Eden bus. Each Sunday that we have done it we have had between 16 and 22 children/young people. We have been running it from 6.30-8.00pm on the last Sunday of the month. The Eden bus is a big bright orange double-decker bus, inside kitted out with the latest gaming consoles, nail bar, board games, music mixing and hang out space.

Each session lasts for an hour and a half with a 10 minute ‘God slot’ in the middle.

We have found that the young people see the bus as a safe space and have shared many issues that are on their mind.

We have applied for a grant to have use of the ‘on Sundays bus ‘for a year; if we are successful we will need some volunteers of all ages. You do not have to do every Sunday or even once a month, but if you could do once a quarter it would be amazing.

Cashless collections in church

Many Cathedrals and churches throughout the UK have now installed contactless credit card readers.

At St.Hilary’s we have quite a number of Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals – often when faced with a collection plate, people tap their pockets and tell us that they don’t have any cash – but have a credit card. So we have used the Church Fee from one of our recent weddings and have invested in a card reader for the back of the church. So instead of tapping their empty pockets, they will now be able to tap their contactless

credit/debit card. The machine can be adjusted to accept one of three payment amounts, but for the initial trial it will be set up to receive £3. The process is very easy, simply tap your card, wait for bleep and the payment is transferred to The Parish of Killay bank account. After every service the encrypted data is transferred to the credit card provider, a 2.5% payment per transaction is paid by ourselves and all remaining monies immediately transferred back to us.

Decisive vote on potential St.Hilary’s extension project

Some time ago a project was raised by the Mission and Outreach Group, at that time chaired by Stephen Gardner. The project involved a number of options around the current porchway and north side of the church, a smaller proposal with an outline cost of £231,000, a larger proposal, and a two tier version of the larger proposal budgeted at approx £393,000. There was also talk of opening up the wall at the East end of the church with a wrap-around canopy with new glass entrance doors. An anonymous donor agreed to fund the initial costs of the preparatory work with a local architect, and for that, the PCC was very grateful. So to clarify, to date, no monies have been spent on this exercise by the PCC. The next stage was to meet with representatives of the Churches and Pastoral Committee i.e. Archdeacon of Gower and Area Dean of Greater Gower. At this meeting, the Churchwardens outlined the plans and reasoning behind looking at this project – and a detailed look at budget costings. Both gentlemen raised serious issues with the scale and the financial Page 5

burden – to a parish that had historic arrears with regards the payment of the Parish Share, which has worried some, over many years. If the project were to proceed, then substantial survey work would need to be undertaken around the wider community, probably involving the paying of an outside professional to carry out this work. There was also talk of coffee shop facilities, when there are numerous such facilities within a few metres of the church.

Following this meeting with the Ven. Jonathan Davies and Canon Peter Brooks, the Vicar and Churchwardens were duty bound to report back to the PCC. On Thursday 2nd May, the Parochial Church Council met in St.Martin’s church. Following a long and frank discussion, talking about our current financial position, potential works needed, even prior to applying for grant funding and thence a Faculty to carry out this work, and the actual need, bearing in mind our large Parish Centre on the same site. It was then put to the vote whether to proceed to the next stage, seeking funding – it would be most unlikely to secure funding, bearing in mind the level of debt we, as a Parish are already in with the Church-in-Wales. There was only one proposal made at the end of the debate, that was, that we look to end this speculative project. There followed a unanimous vote that we go no further with this project at this time. I know that this project has divided the congregation, with several people being very unhappy and unsure of the future for St.Hilary’s church.

Energies need to be expended to better effect on other things, and I hope that those who were entirely unhappy at the project, will now re-group for the good of God’s church, here in Killay.

The Parochial Secretary has written to Huw Griffiths (Architect), to Stephen Gardner and to the anonymous donor thanking them all for their help in the initial stages of this potential project. Canon Phillip has informed the Archdeacon of Gower, the Area Dean, and the Diocesan Secretary of this conclusive decision by the members of the PCC with regards this project. The Vicar wishes to thank the Churchwardens and PCC for proceeding with all due diligence in this regard.

Killay Historic Arrears – an important PCC decision Each year, for the maintenance of Ministry, each Parish in the Church-inWales is required to pay a sum called Parish Share. This money goes towards paying costs related to having a Vicar, housing, salary, pension, on-costs etc.

The paying of the Parish Share has always been seen as being the first call on any parish’s finances. Over approx a decade, and for various reasons, the Parish of Killay has accrued an arrears of approx £66,521. At a recent meeting with the Diocesan Secretary and the Area Dean, the Vicar, Churchwardens and Treasurer were handed an offer from the Diocesan Board of Finance. The offer is the writing off of this debt on a matched pound for pound basis i.e. for every £1,000 Killay pays, £2,000 would be written off the debt.

One of the reasons for this debt accruing was that the figure being required of Killay has grown beyond what it might reasonably be expected to reach. This year, a different approach has been taken by the Diocese. That of, ‘pay what you can afford’, and we have stated that we could quite reasonably afford the

figure of £75,000. What this means is that the Parish Share becomes affordable, thus giving us a better grip on our financial situation.

The third factor is the sale of the Parsonage in Ashgrove, which, following various repayments to Church-in-Wales brought us £155,500. Bearing in mind that the Church-in-Wales loaned us monies to help with urgent damp works at St. Hilary’s. Agents costs, etc, etc, which all needed to be repaid. The final figure that we banked after these deductions was £125,509.

As this 50% offer from DBF was a oneoff, and as we had the monies from the property sale, it was proposed that we pay £33,260.52 to the Diocese which would wipe off our debt entirely, still leaving us with approx £92,000 ringfenced in investments. A vote was taken and a unanimous decision was made to make this payment. We also look forward to our Parish Share reducing over coming years, thus putting Killay on an increasingly secure footing. What is now important is that we meet this £75,000 figure and don’t slip back into a debt scenario.

News from the PCC Mission and Outreach Committee at Killay There have been four meetings of this committee, all of which have been wellattended. The Alpha Course was a very successful Ministry Area initiative, which started in September last year and ran until December. There was an average attendance of 30 and we shared delicious meals, fellowship and stimulating discussions; more importantly, a couple of people came to faith through this course. This led to the Prayer Course which started in January and ran for 6 weeks. Although average attendance for this was 18-20, those who were present felt that this was an excellent course.

The Miracle Men Production held in the Parish Centre was another successful venture. This was advertised in the Ministry Area and over 60 people enjoyed an entertaining and thought provoking evening, based on Bible stories which we thought we knew so well.

We hope that you have enjoyed reading the articles in the magazine from our local schools. We have learnt a great deal about life at Hendrefoilan, Cilâ, Penyfro and Sketty as a result. We hope to hear from Dunvant and

Parkland in future magazines. We have also been delighted by the contributions which the schools have made to our Lay Worship led family services.

A new Ministry Area Youth Club has started, led by Simon Gwynn and Sian Parkhouse, with their band of helpers.

This is held on the last Sunday of the month and it is hoped that this group will grow. The Eden Bus came to visit us on Mothering Sunday and we hope that this will be the first of many such visits.

The Parish website is now widely used, thanks to Dave Jones and Sian Gwynn for all their hard work. If you haven’t had time to look at it yet, please do so. You’ll find it at www.parishofkillay.co.uk There is also a Facebook page, thanks to Sarah Harris.

Many of the suggestions made at the Mission Breakfast have now been implemented and there are more events planned. We are hoping to introduce Prayer Slips and a new Prayer Board idea very soon, details to follow in a future magazine.

We hope to have an Outreach Night and a Mission Harvest later in the year. Canon Phillip and Sian, Simon Gwynn and Sian Parkhouse have had discussions with Dunvant Rugby

Club regarding establishing a Messy Church/Junior Church type session there.

Parish News Sketty This month we have a celebration - as Holy Trinity church celebrates 50 years from its dedication in June 1969. The church was built to serve the new housing estate of Sketty Park. As a Girl Guide, I remember walking across all the undeveloped land to enjoy a hike in Olchfa woods. Holy Trinity was constructed in order to be dual purpose, both a church but also as a church hall. St Paul's congregation will join with the regulars at Holy Trinity for a celebration service on Sunday 16th June. Next month we will include some photos of now and of earlier decades in the life of the church.

The new PCC has had its first meeting and it is great to welcome some new members who are prepared to offer their time in this way.

On 15th June at 7pm, the Fellowship committee is organising a social evening at the Parish Centre to include a music quiz together with a 2 course meal.

Hopefully the music will be wideranging and from across the decades.

Tickets are ÂŁ12 and available from members of the committee. Teams from Tycoch and Killay would be most welcome.

Best wishes to those suffering ill health at the moment and we pray for their return to fitness. Hazel Gabriel is in hospital having broken her hip following a fall and we wish her well - who else will play the piano for us at Lunch Club on celebratory occasions?! We also offer our continuing prayers for Sister Marian as she prepares for ordination at Brecon cathedral on June 29th.

Parish News Tycoch Hi All, I am pleased to say that I do not have any news of sickness or bereavement this month, apart from the demise of our old and trusted organ. As you are aware the old organ has been bought by Christchurch Priory in Dorset (near Bournemouth).

This past week the organ builder has been to All Souls to dismantle her and take her off for a total rebuild before she goes to her new home.

This made me think of all the things the organ would have seen over the past 60 years. The opening service at All Souls the excitement as our fore fathers saw their dreams of a new church in their community of Carnglas coming to life, the endless fundraising events, the prayers and their vision all there before them bright shiney and new.

were full with junior sopranos, lady sopranos, altos, tenors and bass choristers. I believe there was a Choir Master by the name of Harry Trew who everyone loved and respected.

Next came the family celebrations, the weddings and christenings all events that would have been enhanced by our old organ. How many Bridal Marches has she played, how many times ‘Love Divine’ or ‘Praise My Soul the King of Heaven’ or more recently 'Calon Lan’.

Then there are the times when our organ has held us up in our times of sadness – at funerals – when no words could be said but the music said it all for us.

So we are sorry to see ‘Our Old Organ’ go but we have a lovely new one which the organist from Christchurch Priory played this week and the church came alive.

Cilâ Primary School News We continue to be busy at Cilâ and have been working hard on projects and initiatives to further enhance our curriculum.

Our year 5/6 pupils have enjoyed a recent residential trip to Borfa House in Port Eynon and our parents have enjoyed a selection of class assemblies to keep them up to date with children’s learning.

The Premier League ‘Primary Stars’ ran a competition for National Poetry Day with a theme based on ‘Change.’ The poems were entered into a National Poetry Competition with the Premier League whose theme this year was ‘Diversity.’ Lola in Year 5 was selected as the overall winner for Swansea City Community Trust. We have also enjoyed being part of the Ambassador Programme this year. Swansea City Club Ambassador Leon Britton attended Cilâ as part of our Primary Stars Programme. The Ambassador Programme is based around Premier League values and resilience within schools.

The pupils took part in a funny and interactive version of the famous story Oliver Twist. It was performed by a touring theatre group and after the production the pupils completed workshops giving them an insight into life in Victorian Times. They were introduced to the rules and regulations of the establishment, history of the day and what their work might be if they lived in Victorian England, very different to life today!

As a school we supported Safer Internet Day on Tuesday February 5th.

The theme was ‘Together for a Better Internet.’ In school the children learnt about safe use of the internet through assembly and specific lessons related to the internet.

Show Racism the Red Card Wales worked with our KS2 pupils combining classroom based activities and discussions around racial stereotypes and terminology, with games and activities delivered by the Show Racism the Red Card Education Worker As part of our ‘Welsh Week’ celebrations to celebrate Welsh history and culture, the pupils took part in a selection of activities to bring learning alive. They enjoyed a range of experiences including Welsh cookery workshops; making and tasting Welsh cakes, poetry workshops run by poet Kate Williams, Welsh storytelling workshops – Mabinogion, to develop pupil’s storytelling skills and instill a passion for reading and storytelling.

The pupils really did enjoy their visit from Black Bart, The Cunning Pirate of the Caribbean. He performed a Welsh history show full of fun and facts.

Since February, we have had the pleasure of working in partnership with Swansea University Department of Classics, Ancient History and Egyptology to offer literacy lessons through the classics. This has given

our Key stage 2 pupils the opportunity to learn Latin whilst further developing their literacy skills through a topic based approach.

We enjoyed taking part in the Dance in Education Project 2019 – ‘Living Wild’ with Gower College IMPACT dance who performed at school giving an excellent opportunity to engage our children in different styles of dance performance.

Pupils from Cilâ Primary School are working alongside our Community PCSO’s and School Community Police Officers to facilitate the Mini Police Initiative. The Mini

Police have been recruited from Cilâ by our PCSO’s. Children applied for the position by completing application forms and are working on themes based on local issues.

At Cilâ we strive to ensure that pupils are responsible citizens and care about the world in which we all live. This was reflected in our successful renewal of our Eco-Schools Green Flag 1st Platinum Renewal. We have continued to progress with new projects and ideas and have all been committed to this work. We urge you all to Reduce, Renew and Recycle. ***

Killay Community Council Tea Party

50 local senior citizens attended a Blue Hawaii themed tea party at St Hilarys parish centre on 18th May. The hall was decked with Hawaiian bunting and all guests were given lei garlands to enter into the spirit of the afternoon.

Whilst enjoying refreshments they were entertained by 11 members of the Swansea Ukelele Club. The guests were able to sing along to a wide range of songs. The uklele originated in Hawaii. The Swansea Ukelele club volunteer their time and all proceeds this year are to be donated to Killay Forget Me Nots.

To complete the Blue Hawaii theme an Elvis Presley multi-choice quiz took place with prizes for the winning team. The afternoon rounded off with a raffle and a vote of thanks to the Community Council for organising the event.

Who am I ?

I am Sister Marian who is a Reader in the Church in Wales and also l live the Solitary Religious Life’ as an ‘Oblate Sister’ of ‘The Society of The Sacred Cross’ and Life Professed Sister of the Single Consecrated Life..

The Society of The Sacred Cross has its convent in Tymawr in Lydart in Monmouth.

This is an Anglican order of Nuns who have taken vows to live a life of prayer and remain most of the time within the convent.

An Oblate is a woman or a man who has made ‘an Oblation’ (a promise) to live a Rule of Life in accordance with the teachings of the Order. Oblates spend some time every year at the convent and have a ‘link sister’ to help them to keep their rules.

I could not enter the ‘Community’ as a ‘sister’ because in my early forties I began to develop an illness which means I am in constant pain and mostly housebound.

However, I felt called to deepen my commitment and so, with the support of the Community, my Bishop and an excellent Spiritual Director, I was in 1998 permitted to make a one-year vow of ‘Chastity’ to live the ‘Single Consecrated Life’ in my own home.

At the end of that year with the support of the Order, the Bishop and my Director, I deepened my commitment and made three- year vows of Chastity and Obedience.

Finally, it was agreed, that on Matthias’ Day June 14th. 2002, before the Bishop of Swansea and Brecon I could make my Life Vows of Chastity, Poverty of Spirit and Obedience to run alongside my ‘Rule of Life’ and to live the full Solitary Religious Life in my own home.

I have been ‘Life Professed’ for 17 years making a total of 21 years in vows. I have often said that I had to become ill in order for God to get a word in edge-ways! However, I have learnt that it is true that God can bring ‘Goodness and Blessings even out of suffering’!

I reaffirmed my vows in Pennard last week, celebrating 21 years in vows: 4 in temporary vows and 17 life professed = 20.

I am very grateful to all who have prayed for me and supported me over the years and who continue to do so.

OUR PATH THROUGH LIFE

I wonder where is this path? Where has it come from and where is it going? Where does it begin and where does it end?

Who constructed it and for what purpose?

The path itself is like crazy paving and made up of all different size paving stones. It looks as if some parts have had to be repaired with fresh cement poured into the cracks to hold them firmly together and to stop anything growing up between them, The thick healthy green growing plants and shrubs, and the trees standing above them suggest to me that they

have been there a long time. I wonder if this path is in a nature reserve or country estate where many visitors enjoy the countryside and the path has been constructed to allow them to easily travel from one part of the forest area to another.

If I was standing there, would I feel safe? Would I be happy to walk there alone? If I hadn’t been to this place before, would the way ahead look daunting or inviting? Would I want to go back to where my walk began or would I continue, believing that whoever built the path was making sure it was safe and

that although I can’t see very far ahead, I know it will continue and there is a purpose for it.

Unfortunately, in these sad days, it is never wise to journey along such paths alone and the undergrowth could conceal many dangers. Whatever we do, we would need to stay on the path believing that there is something special at the end of it with a reward for all who persevere and we will be safe.

We can compare ourselves as a church to this path. We are made up of similar material, but we come in all shapes and sizes. Some of us are cracked and broken and a bit battered by our experiences in life. Our Creator can form us into a body which can be a means of support to help others on their spiritual journeys to meet Him. In His hands we can all be useful and, joined with one-another we are strong.

There are times when as a church we are fractured and broken by situations in our church lives. But Our Creator is always there to repair the damage and He cements us together by His love.

Some think that as a church we are all a bit ‘crazy’ but, they acknowledge that we can give good service and support to all who need to find a way through a chaotic world.

Those who wish to make use of us start from many different places but if they stay on the Christian path of faith that we

provide they will find it easier to continue to the end of their lives’ journeys.

The way ahead may be obscured from sight but with God our Creator to maintain us through His Holy Spirit, we can be sure that He has a wonderful place for weary travellers who keep firm to the faith and do not deviate from the path He has chosen for them.

The world around us is beautiful but there are many dangers and constant threats that could destroy those on their journeys to God’s Kingdom. Those who follow the path of God’s church find a companion or companions helpful and an encouragement and an extra defence against whatever tries to tempt away from our faith.

Where are you and I placed in the church path? In what state were we when God first found us and decided to use us? Were we damaged by problems in our own lives? How did Our Lord God repair us and work on us in order to make us able to fit in with others in the path? We still may be imperfect but His love enables us to be used as we are no matter how misshapen and all of us in His hands become God’s ‘crazy paving path’ in service to those who need to find their own way to the Father.

Ladies Guild Killay We were pleased to welcome Geta Aldridge on 1st May, who came to tell us about her life as an immigrant from Nairobi in 1962.

Geta was a middle one of 6 children whose family were Sikh, her father and eldest brother came to Britain, making their home in the Midlands and the rest of the family followed later. Geta trained as a teacher and met the Welsh man who was to become her husband. For a time she was disowned by her family, as was her sister who married a Hindu although after a while, they met their mother in secret. Later, they were taken back into the family.

After moving to Swansea, Geta began working at a children's home before becoming an Early Years Adviser with West Glamorgan Education Department. Since taking early retirement, she has been involved with several local Indian organisations, and become a governor at a local primary school.

Five years ago, Geta visited India for the first time since leaving and was shocked by the extremes of poverty and wealth. *** The following week, Carol Williams of “Care and Repair Western Bay” came to talk about the help and equipment available to elderly and people with disabilities in Swansea and Neath, Port Talbot council areas. She spoke about the home checks which would be

carried out to assess what is needed, such as grab rails in showers, on outside paths or steps and other home safety aids such as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Grants are also available for repairs.

Members were very interested in the help available and Carol was able to answer the many questions posed and supplied folders of information for everyone.

In 2002, Paddy Bradbury participated in a fund raising walk along the Great Wall of China in aid the Childrens' Society, everyone of the 42 people taking part had to raise at least £2500. The aim was to walk six miles a day for six days along the very hilly, rough wall.

The hotels en route were very poor, 2 star at best, no showers and the food unpalatable so Paddy stuck to a diet of boiled eggs, boiled rice and chips, white bread and ketchup, and cake. The seventh day was at a slightly better hotel in Beijing where the party was promised showers; unfortunately these were visible to people walking along the road outside! During the day there, Paddy was able to visit Tianamen Square and to see the pandas.

The group had walked a total of 63 miles raising over £100,000! *** Dr Margaret Davies, a Geo-chemist who, before retiring, had taught science at Bishop

Vaughan School, came on 22nd May to show us her amazing needlework creations.

Margaret developed an interest in needle work after winning a prize as a schoolgirl.

After retiring, she joined the Embroiderers Guild where she learned about the numerous kind of stitches and methods of embroidery. The pictures she had created varied greatly from “The Tree of Life” with intricate, recognisable birds, a scene from 5th June 12th June 19th June 26th June

Creating beautiful boxes is a passion of hers, some were decorated with gold animals, patterns and leaves but one of the most striking was in the shape of a volcano with lava cascading around the side. Mothers’ Union Killay Our annual Spring Retreat or Quiet Day was held as usual in Nicholaston House, Gower on May 1st. Although quite cold we were lucky enough to be able to take our quiet times outside in the lovely gardens or in the chapel. This year we were led by the Rev. Ian Folks , curate in St. Mary’s, Swansea. The theme of the day was that the presence of Jesus is still with us. Our day was divided into three sessions; a hymn which Ian accompanied on his guitar, a short reflection & a quiet time.

Jesus shows himself three times: to Mary, the disciples & Thomas. Mary’s encounter is very definitive & changes all our ideas about death. She recognises Him as soon as He speaks her name.

Jesus can speak to us at any time & can turn our world upside down as it did for Mary.

Next we looked at Thomas. Did he feel left out; did he react as anyone of us would do? However Jesus offered his nail-driven hands as proof & Thomas’ reaction: “My Lord & My God“ were very powerful words. (Actually, Thomas was the Founding Father of the church in India.) The disciples were all gathered together, fed up, scared of being arrested, their dreams shattered. Jesus appears & as soon as He appears & says “Peace Be With You” this group of

unlearned men were inspired & eventually went out, healed, preached & taught wherever they were. Jesus can inspire us & our Churches today.

His third appearance was on familiar territory, where it all began. On the shore; men out fishing, none caught until Jesus intervenes & lights a fire on the beach in readiness to cook the fish they had then caught. Peter is then restored by Jesus (after his three denials) & same as Peter we can be restored by God. Do not weary in your doing; as Peter was restored so God will restore us.

Our lunch was lovely, cups of tea/ coffee gratefully drunk & away we all went to our various destinations. *** Mr Gary Gregor gave a talk on May 7th about shipwrecks around the dangerous Gower coast. He started the talk by mentioning the ‘Helvetia’ which was grounded on the beach at Rhossili, luckily suffering no casualties.

However, the first shipwreck Gary described in detail was again off Rhossili, a paddle steamer, the ‘City of Bristol’ enroute from Waterford in

Ireland to Bristol, carrying oats, livestock and pigs, penned on deck. The ship ran aground; the pigs panicked, many drowned and 27 people perished. One carpenter survived as he swam ashore when the ship broke in two. An inquest was held in the local pub; the surviving pigs were kept at Cwm Ivy Farm. At very low tide, the engine housing can be seen.

Safety at sea was now on the agenda and the Whitford lighthouse was built.

In 1884, a lifeboat station was erected at Port Eynon which needed 6 horses to pull it to a launch.

On New Years Day 1916, the ‘Dunvegan’ was wrecked near Hunts Bay. The crew were rescued by special rockets which shot ropes from shore to ship. The lifeboat was launched but capsized; the oars were lost and 3 crew members lost their lives. There is a statue of Coxswain George Harry prominently placed in the churchyard at Port Eynon.

The third shipwreck on Gary’s list is the last and most recent off Gower Events in June:

originally the ‘M.V. Shanklin’, a pleasure cruiser re-named ‘Prince Ivanhoe’. On 3rd August 1981 the ship hit something under water near the coast and ran aground at Horton. All aboard were rescued although 2 people suffered heart attacks and one sadly died.

Jean Minchella thanked Gary for his knowledgeable talk, saying we should all be aware of the dangers at sea and the bravery of the men who sail on it. *** On May 14th, the Branch visited St Catherine’s Church in Gorseinon for the Greater Gower Deanery Festival. The service was led by the vicar, Rev Dr. Adrian Morgan and the guest speaker was Rev Canon Peter Brooks, Area Dean.

Julie Cole carried the banner for St Hilary’s branch. *** May 21st was the annual trip to the cathedral in Brecon for the Diocesan Festival. After the service there was time for shopping in the town, followed by a meal in the Abercrave Inn.

Music Society Killay

At our May meeting we were so pleased to have the annual visit of Les and Penny Ryan and their Ariosa Singers. Over the years they have raised funds for many deserving charities. To begin, Penny introduced the choir and Lisa Mears who would share the piano accompanist’s duties with Les. The programme began with the ladies of the choir singing Cesar Franck’s “Panis Angelicus” with soloist Rachel Hunter, followed by the gentlemen singing “Alleluia, for the Lord God Almighty reigns”.

We were then treated to a duet from Lionel Bart’s “Oliver”. Brother and sister Rhys and Isla Hunter took the stage as Nancy and Oliver to sing “I’d do anything”.

Nancy Cavendish then sang a lovely gentle ballad “The Path to the Moon”, which was new to me.

Isla Hunter then returned with a beautiful rendition of “Castle on a Cloud” from “Les Miserables”. This was followed by a newcomer to St. Hilary’s. Pianist Tristan Xuan delighted us at the piano with “Little Waltz”

by Brian Chapple.

The Judy Garland song from the “Wizard of Oz” came next. Of course it was “Somewhere over the Rainbow”. It has been sung so many times by so many people and we thoroughly enjoyed Maggie Fegan’s interpretation and her perfect diction.

One of my favourite musicals is “Fiddler on the Roof”. Rhys Hunter sang the lovely ballad “Sunrise Sunset”. He has a rich, strong voice also with perfect diction.

Liam Fegan, brother to Maggie came next.

He sang a very difficult song called “Stars” from “Les Miserables”. He gave a confident but sensitive performance which was truly appreciated by the audience.

The super personality of Naveen V. Kanamarlapudi really suited his version of “The Pirate King” from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Pirates of Penzance”.

Next followed Rachel Hunter, Mum to Rhys and Isla. She sang the haunting melody “On my own” from “Les Miserables” and then the traditional Irish song “Danny Boy”.

A change of mood followed with the gentle and poignant song “Tell my Father” from “The Civil War” by Wildhorn, Boyd and Murphy. Many of us remembered Alexander Iles with his lovely voice from previous visits.

Another familiar face followed. Ewan Forrest sang and acted the tongue-twister “John Wellington Wells” from Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Sorcerer”. He managed perfectly the fast and furious lyrics!

Daniel Davies has a superb tenor voice and he gave a dramatic and emotional performance of “Why God Why” from the musical “Miss Saigon”.

The opera “Porgy and Bess” has a lovely ‘stand-alone’ song. “Summertime” was sung

by Bethan Evans. She has a lovely soprano voice, perfect high notes and excellent diction.

Next followed a group song, “Bui Doi” from “Miss Saigon” with a solo from Ewan Forrest. Gershwin fans were pleased to hear the swinging light-hearted song “Puttin’ on the Ritz” sung with joy and enthusiasm by Alexander Iles.

Another change of mood with “Benedictus” sung as a duet by Alex and Ewan.

Another song new to me was “Love’s Philosophy” beautifully sung by Bethan Evans.

Before the finale, Penny announced that we had a birthday girl in the audience. It was Daniel’s Mum, Debbie. So of course we all joined in with “Happy Birthday”. The programme concluded with the dramatic song “The Impossible Dream” from “The man of La Mancha”, sung with great feeling and conviction by Daniel Davies, surely a star of the future.

The chairman thanked Penny, Les and the whole company for a really superb evening of such a variety of music. We are already looking forward to their next visit. Huge applause followed and then we all enjoyed refreshments.

A Squirrel, a Dog and a Panther An old Doberman starts chasing rabbits and before long, discovers that he's lost. Wandering about, he notices a panther heading rapidly in his direction with the intention of having lunch.

The old Doberman thinks, "Oh, oh! I'm in deep trouble now!"

Noticing some bones on the ground close by, he immediately settles down to chew on the bones with his back to the approaching cat. Just as the panther is about to leap, the old Doberman exclaims loudly, "Boy, that was one delicious panther! I wonder if there are any more around here?"

Hearing this, the young panther halts his attack in mid-strike, a look of terror comes over him and he slinks away into the trees.

"Phew!," says the panther, "That was close! That old Doberman nearly had me!"

Meanwhile, a squirrel who had been watching the whole scene from a nearby tree, figures he can put this knowledge to good use and trade it for protection from the panther. So, off he goes.

The squirrel soon catches up with the panther, spills the beans and strikes a deal for himself with the panther.

The young panther is furious at being made a fool of and says, "Here, squirrel, hop on my back and see what's going to happen to that conniving canine!"

Now, the old Doberman sees the panther coming with the squirrel on his back and thinks, "What am I going to do now?," but instead of running, the dog sits down with his back to his attackers, pretending he hasn't seen them yet, and just when they get close enough to hear, the old Doberman says...

"Where's that squirrel? I sent him off an hour ago to bring me another panther!"

Moral of this story...

Don't mess with the old dogs... Age and skill will always overcome youth and treachery!

St James the Least of All

The Rev Dr Gary Bowness continues his letters from ‘Uncle Eustace’…

Beware the summer strawberry tea …

The Rectory, St James the Least My dear Nephew Darren Never, ever feel aggrieved that your summer strawberry tea has to be held in the church hall rather than on a lawn, since there is hardly a single blade of grass to be found in your entire parish. You have no idea of the potential calamities you are avoiding.

Here, during the previous week, the organisers will be desperately asking the opinion of local farmers about the weather. In doing so, they forget that for the farming community, it is always the wrong sort of weather anyway. I once received a heartfelt plea from the staff at Heathrow Airport for our ladies to stop calling them at hourly intervals to find out if hurricanes may be imminent.

Naturally, the day will start out warm and sunny and so all the tables will be arranged on the vicarage lawn. By 10am, tablecloths will have been laid. By 10.10am, a brisk breeze will have sprung up and someone will be delegated to retrieve them all from deep within the nettle patch. By 11am, clouds will gather, and a decision will be made to transfer everything into the church hall. Once that is completed, just when it is almost too late to change, the sun will re-emerge and there will be a frantic dash to put everything back on the lawn. This ensures that by 2pm when teas start, the ladies will already be in a state of collapse.

Last year, the Dowager Duchess of Trilby graced us with her presence. As she sat with her entourage, elegantly sipping tea under a giant parasol over the table, the thing – equally elegantly – closed around her, leaving her looking like one of those unfortunate insects trapped by a carnivorous plant.

To emerge from its depths looking entirely unflustered was beyond even her social skills.

Fortunately, attention was diverted from her predicament by the wife of one of our farmers. This substantial lady had been sitting in a chair with slightly too thin legs for the damp lawn. The rear two slowly sank into the grass, eventually catapulting the dear lady backwards into the lap of the local mayor. Disentangling red flannelette from mayoral chains took some time, and delicacy.

At least when I have had enough, the lawn can be cleared in minutes by drawing the raffle. The moment the last plastic shower cap and set of Christmas doilies has been awarded, there will be a dash to get home, giving my dog the opportunity to retrieve remnants of cream cakes from the flower beds.

Mothers’ Union Diocesan Festival

St Hilary’s MU travelled by coach to Brecon for the MU Diocesan Festival and commissioning of the new president Sally Freedman and other officers. There were members of other MU branches with us also some of our friends from the “Forget me not” club which meets at Siloam Church. Julie Cole carried our banner (see inside back cover) and Canon Phillip was present at the service. The sun shone as eventually we travelled to the Abercrave Inn where 30 of us enjoyed a meal together.

Lunch Club News, Killay

What a lovely day out we had in Brecon on Wednesday – 36 of us boarded the coach in Killay to a threat of rain for a the rest of the day but, as soon as we reached Brecon, out came the sunshine which lasted most of the day – what a difference it made to the beautiful Brecon Beacons. We arrived to find our buffet lunch all ready when we boarded the boat which was excellent. When we reached the viaduct, most of us enjoyed a short walk along the canal bank while the boat went up to turn around. We spotted three herons and also a family of ducks with about eight baby ducklings. It certainly is a lovely time of year to be out in the country.

On June 12th, we will be having a coffee morning / Bring & Buy so hope you will come along and support the lunch club between 10:00am and 12:00pm for a coffee and chat.

St Martin’s Church is available for hire. It can accommodate about 35 people. If you are interested, please contact Church Wardens.
