Parish News Killay We pray for those who are ill at home, in hospitals or nursing homes. Our thoughts and our prayers are also with those who lovingly care for them day by day: Phyllis Harris, Emlyn Bawden, Joan Dobbs, Eunice Miron, Fr. Roy Blewett, Margaret Harris, Barbara Jones. *** Birthday greetings to Sian Gwynn. Sian celebrated her 60th birthday on 6th November but her husband (who we all know to be a very romantic man) started her celebrations off at the Black Boy All Souls Luncheon on 4th November. Then on 5th November he took her and friends to the Grape and Olive - best table in the house for her to enjoy the Fireworks across the Bay - then on her real birthday he hosted a family birthday party for her. How lovely for you Sian as you not only work for the two parishes but you are involved in the community as a JP and in your nursing work.

May you enjoy many more celebrations like this. Sian sends a huge thank you to all who wished her well for the day with cards, messages and gifts. *** Your last chance to conclude the Christmas / New Year celebrations - and no turkey in sight! Besides members of St Hilary’s in attendance, a warm welcome is extended to our friends at St Martin’s and All Souls churches for our Parish dinner on 6th January.

Fourth Sunday changes in January

A gentle reminder that as of the last Sunday NEXT month, we will be trialling a slightly different service pattern. At All Souls the service will begin at the usual time of 9.30am, but the service will be short and will be a said service – but followed, as usual, by refreshments at the back of the church. This will enable the Vicar to stay for tea (briefly) as he has been doing, then he can get to St.Martin’s Church in Dunvant for a sung Eucharist which will start at 11am. We shall trial this until Easter, then the Vicar will make a decision about the permanency of this arrangement, or not. Canon Phillip would be most grateful if regular members of All Souls and St.Martin’s could make routine attenders aware of these changes. Again, this is a case of the two parishes working together for the good of each other – with only one Priest! ********************************************************************* If, tomorrow, Jesus walked among us in Swansea or Brecon as he walked in Galilee 2,000 years ago, where would he start his visit, do you think? He might start in the Quadrant in Swansea - who knows?

He might start in the Beacons or the villages of Gower.

There again he might start in the places where Faith in Families have their family centres. For more than 17 years Faith in Families has been helping parents by running family centres. It is the work of Jesus.

But of course Jesus is coming, isn’t he? On December 25th we will celebrate with slapup Christmas meals: turkey, roast potatoes, all the trimmings and Christmas pudding.

One estimate of the cost of a Christmas meal for four today is £84.27† How about including Jesus in the meal? It would cost you £21.07 – assuming Jesus eats as much as everyone else eats. The suggestion is that you give £21.07 this Advent to Faith in Families – or more if you are going to drink champagne… Jesus likes champagne.

If all the worshippers in all the parishes in our Diocese gave £21.07 to Faith in Families that would be £105,350. And they need the money.

Parish News Sketty As we look forward to Christmas celebrations with family and friends we think of those who are separated from loved ones through illness at home, in care homes or in hospital. In particular, we keep in our prayers John Gilbody who is in Morriston hospital and also Jude and all the family. We also think of those who have an anniversary of the loss of a loved one at this time of year.

In Lunch Club, it was party time again, as we once more celebrated a special birthday as Jim Hardwick reaches l00 years. Although born in Farnborough, Jim (actually George Ernest, but referred to as young Jim after his uncle Jim) came to live in Swansea as a very young boy. Despite loss of his sight, Jim lives independently and is ever cheerful, an example to us all. Happy Birthday Jim. We will yet again welcome pupils in year 7 from Bishop Gore School to St Paul's for The Christmas Experience. Over two days, we welcome the pupils class by class and retell the Christmas story in different stations throughout the church. This event has now taken place for several years and is mainly manned by Open The Book volunteers, who also gain much from retelling the details of the story, well known to them, but not to many of the children who attend.

Hopefully people will have noticed the improvement in the clearance of rubbish from the church grounds. PCC members clear the litter on a rota basis. A big thank you also to Cathy Armstrong and TA Volunteers for their work in tidying part of the churchyard. It is hoped to arrange a Tidy up day some time in the new year.

Don’t forget that 2019 calendars are still for sale from members of the Altar Guild.

Parish News Tycoch The Christmas festivities are about to begin, some people know how many days there are to Christmas, I am too afraid to count, but I know there are 8 Carol Services to be arranged and 5 Christmas Dinners for the Vicar to attend all before 16th December !!! It reminds me every year of the Vicar of Dibley, he does survive - but only just.

I would like to thank everyone for the birthday wishes I received for my 00 birthday, I truly had a fabulous time, first a Murder Mystery event on the Belmont Pullman Train around Kent & Hampshire (this is the British Version of the Orient Express ), then dinner with friends on 5th November at the Grape and Olive with Swansea City Council firework display thrown in, spectacular view through the panoramic windows. Finally the family arranged a party. I do recommend the 00 birthday.

The Remembrance Day Service was enhanced this year by the poppy arrangements made by the All Souls ladies and the beautiful flower arrangement in the sanctuary, lovingly prepared by Hazel Richards and Celia Hall, thank you everyone for everything you do to enhance our worship Sunday by Sunday.

So what is on the horizon for December at All Souls, Lynsey will celebrate her birthday on 13th December, ‘Happy Birthday Lynsey’. 30th November the Coffee and Catch up group are going to Aberglasney Gardens near Carmarthen for the Winter Fayre, the itinerary certainly looks as if it will bring some Christmas Spirit (the non alcoholic type of course).

There will be the usual Family Christmas Services, Christingle Friday 14th December 6pm & Family Crib Service Christmas Eve at 4pm.

The Vicar and I will be preparing Sherry and Mince Pies on 16th December following the morning service, Please come along and share your Christmas greetings, also there will be the usual Christmas Card Board at the back of Church for those who would like to make a donation to Charity and just send 1 card. (a good way not to miss anyone out!).

Please feel free to join the congregations at St Hilary’s and St Martins for their Christmas Services too.

Touchline Sunday School A new project for a New Year – 2019 will see closer working between St.Hilary’s Church and Dunvant Rugby Club Junior Section. Details are yet to be properly ironed out, but in essence, Sunday School in the form of cut/paste, create and learn about faith will take place at the Broadacre base of Dunvant Rugby Club.

The idea being, that we will take the good news of the Gospel to where large numbers of young people naturally congregate. This will be for a trial period of six months, to be regularly reassessed. There will be a small team initially steered by Sian Parkhouse and others. If you would like to be involved in this exciting bit of outreach, or to use a churchy word – Evangelism – let the Wardens or Canon Phillip know. What would be good would be a rota of people, who might commit to 60mins on one Sunday in any month, freeing up people on the other three Sundays to continue to worship in church. We can talk about working with young people – here is an opportunity to show your action.

What is Christingle?

The Christingle is an orange with fruits and sweets – won’t say any more because all will be revealed at All Souls Church in Tycoch on Friday 14th Dec. at 6pm. The service takes place in a darkened church – usually a very full church! All are welcome to come along, if you want a seat, then you should get there early. All children attending will be given a lit Christingle to take home. The climax of the service is singing a carol as part of a ring of lit Christingles. Be warned, it can be emotional. All monies raised go to help families in poverty and children who might not receive any Christmas presents.

GOD’S CHRISTMAS CAKE

Let’s think about our church as God’s Christmas cake church!

Before He decided to make it, He had to take into consideration the best place to make it and what to put into in and who could He use to help Him. Next, He had to consider what would go into it.

God decided to make a few church cakes and the best place for His cake churches was the Ministry Area of Clyne Trinity. He called a few people to help Him make them and He gave them special names like priests and lay leaders.

Then God had to think about the ingredients He would use. He chose many people but although they were the main ingredient, there were special things He had to add to them.

First to be added was the Holy Spirit. Then He added love that would provide the sweetness for His cake churches. With this came the promise of eternal life which would bind the rest of the church cakes together.

Next came spiritual fruits of: joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility and self-control.

Once all of these were mixed together God had to put the finishing touches.

The heat of His love spread throughout the church cakes until it changed them into solid structures that offered nourishment and joy to all who wished to share in them.

Don’t forget it is up to us to share God’s Christmas cakes with others this Christmas. Perhaps they will come back for more!

For Whom the Bell Tolled………….. ..............it was Remembrance Sunday 2018.......here I was alone at the font of St Hilary's Church about to ring the church bell at 12.30 pm.......joining the churches across the country........across the world even.......tolling out the message of peace and reconciliation....... to celebrate the Peace won 100 years ago at the end of the First World War ..........the echoes from the previous sounds of the hymn...."Oh God our help in ages past " still ringing in my head from the Eucharist service of the previous hour........and the names of those, many from the commonwealth of nations, who are buried in our cemetery who had fallen in World War Two ...far from home....and remembered by some of our congregation who assembled at their graveside to honour their passing a long time ago.....and I was aware of the peace all around me.......no sound of voices......no distractions.......no wind nor rain beating on the stained glass windows.....no sounds of traffic from the nearby Gower road.....nor planes flying above from Swansea airport...previously RAF Fairwood.....where some of the fallen had taken off in their planes.....and never returned.....and then I was brought down to earth......the clock was approaching 12.29.....and I felt honoured that shortly I was to ring out a bell of peace.......a peace won by our fellow men and women.....firstly between 1914 -1918......and then 1944-1945...... But today was especially about the former......and so I tolled the bell for five minutes............and during that time

I recalled all the television pictures that I had watched during the previous night's Remembrance Service from the Royal Albert Hall.....the sheer bravery......the gallantry from our fellow country men and women from the theatres of war across Europe and indeed....across the world.......many of them died young far from home......indeed they will never grow old.......all of them sacrificed their young lives so that we could live in peace.......and so I tolled our bell for five minutes to ring out across Dunvant and Killay ......and perhaps with the wind in the right direction...heard at RAF Fairwood.....A TOLL FOR PEACE.....and I looked down at an open page from our hymn book.....how apt...hymn 328.....maybe it was the thought of those who laid down their lives for us....."Make me a channel of your peace.....where there is hatred.....let me bring your love. Where there is injury....your pardon, Lord......and where there's doubt...true faith in you......and in dying...that we are born to eternal life.........and what made the occasion so poignant for me was that I was remembering the anniversary of the passing of my own dad on this very day many years ago......an old, proud soldier of a world war where so many gave so much and laid down their lives so that we might enjoy.......PEACE....... ........correction......I was not alone at St Hilary of course......for HE was with me......

Ladies Guild Killay The meeting on “Halloween” was Members Own which was celebrated with a “Beetle Drive” and appropriately decorated cakes to accompany our tea and coffee. It was a fun evening enjoyed by everyone, especially Noreen Shapton who won with a score of over 300.

John Richards came along on 7th November speak about the history of the ruins of Neath Abbey from it's beginnings as a Cistercian Monastery in the 12th Century, until the Industrial Revolution when there was an iron works on the site.

Following the conquest of Glamorgan by Robert FitzHamon, the land was given to Sir Richard De Grenville, one of the twelve Knights of Glamorgan, who founded the Abbey in 1129. After the dissolution of the monasteries, a Tudor mansion was built on the site. Richard

took us on a photographic tour of the remains of the various buildings, describing the way of life of the monks.

Many artefacts still exist in the Neath and Skewen area, some of which are part of garden walls!

It was a fascinating, well told history story.

T Our annual shopping trip this year, on 21st November, was a visit to the Victorian Christmas Market at Gloucester Quays. The Market was quite small; however Guild members and their friends were spoilt for choice in the shops at the designer shopping outlet adjoining it. Many thanks to Gwynneth for arranging a most enjoyable day.

T Our speaker on November 14th was Lt. Col. Adrian Williams, who talked to us about his life in the Army. Since leaving u n i v e r s i t y, w h e r e h e s t u d i e d engineering, he has served for 24 years with the Royal Engineers Regiment. He explained the difficult three day selection procedure when he applied to join the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and gave examples of the

wide range of tasks prospective H e e n j o y s l o n g applicants face, to judge their suitability distance canoeing, is to train as Army Officers.

Chair of the Rugby During his career, Lt. Col. Williams has Club which has taken served in Kenya, in Kosovo, in Bosnia, in him to Cyprus this Iraq and several tours of duty in year and Memphis in 2019. He also Afghanistan. As his career progressed, spends time rehabilitation skiing with he faced greater responsibility each time injured servicemen. and was Squadron Commander in Afghanistan. Other operations have included planning and logistics in London, working with the Gurkhas in Nepal, working on the border between North and South Korea, working with the Ebola crisis in Sierra Leone, designing runways for the airport at Kathmandu and establishing a clean water supply following the earthquake and helping to plan the evacuation of Baghdad, when the Mosul Dam was likely to burst.

He ended his fascinating talk by showing us the equipment and body armour which is worn by serving members of the armed forces.

He also told us how much he has enjoyed other events, he and his wife attended a Garden party at Buckingham Palace and he has been to conferences in Singapore and Hawaii. The Army has enabled him to develop his love of sport.

Cila Primary School News We have had an extremely busy start to the Autumn term and Christmas is already nearly here!

September brought good news for Cila as we were awarded 2nd place in the Wales In Bloom School Grounds category. We decided to enter Wales in Bloom this year to share our school garden with others and celebrate all the hard work that everyone puts into it. We are all really proud of our school garden and work around the year to keep our learning environment one in which we thrive. It supports lots of curriculum areas and skills far beyond what can be taught within the classroom walls. For many years now we have had the privilege of working with two senior members of our governing body who, through their own dedication and love of gardening, have passed on invaluable knowledge and skills to our pupils. We are a relatively small school with limited outdoor space but we strive to make every inch count! The sensory garden lends itself to apple trees for taste, a small pond/waterfall for sound, colourful plants and herbs for smell and a quiet seating area to sit and enjoy the garden. We have a range of raised beds which we use for o u r v e g e t a b l e s . E a c h c l a ss t a ke s responsibility for each bed.

Linked to our whole school theme this term ‘Looking Back’, we all took part in Dinosaur workshops run by Dino for hire. We all enjoyed learning about dinosaur facts and

examining real fossils. The dinosaurs visited school and the pupils enjoyed meeting Trixie and Bradley and watching a realistic baby dinosaur hatch from an egg.

The year 5/6 pupils enjoyed the active citizenship workshops held in school during November, which helped them to engage in their local and global community as active citizens. They are currently working on a project to support homeless people in Swansea.

We all supported the National Anti-Bullying week by exploring aspects of good friendship and behaviour. PC Craig Hadley visited the school to support us with this work and carried out presentations for our pupils.

We have also had visits from Tonia Antionazzi, MP for Gower, to support our work this term on pupil voice and from ‘Dogs Trust’ to help us to develop our understanding of looking after our pets and being able to approach a dog in a safe manner.

In amongst our busy curriculum we have also raised money this term for Macmillan by hosting a successful coffee morning for our nursery and reception parents. We all wore our spotted clothes during a nonschool uniform day to raise money for Children in Need.

1st Corinthians 13 - A Christmas Version

If I decorate my house perfectly with plaid bows, strands of twinkling lights and shiny balls, but do not show love to my family, I’m just another decorator.

If I slave away in the kitchen, baking dozens of Christmas cookies, preparing meals and arranging a beautifully adorned table at mealtime, but do not show love to my family, I’m just another cook.

If I work in the soup kitchen, carol in the Nursing Home and give all that I have to charity, but do not show love to my family, it profits me nothing.

If I trim the spruce with shimmering angels and crocheted snowflakes, attend a myriad of holiday parties and sing in the choir’s cantata, but do not focus on those I love the most, I have missed the point. ….In other words, Love stops the cooking to hug a child.

Love sets aside the decorating to kiss the spouse.

Love is kind, though harried and tired.

Love doesn’t envy another’s home that has coordinated Christmas china and table linens.

Love doesn’t yell at the kids to get out of the way, but is thankful they are there to be in the way.

Love doesn’t give only to those who are able to give in return but rejoices in giving to those who can’t.

Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails.

Video games will break, pearl necklaces will be lost, golf clubs will rust.

But the gift of love will endure.

The 100 Club The fundraising scheme known as "The 100 Club" has been in operation in the Parish of Tycoch since 2004. It is designed to make a small, but continuous annual addition to Church funds. The Parochial Church Councils (PCC’s), of Tycoch and Killay, have met and agreed to extend this scheme to cover both parishes. If all 100 numbers are taken, the net income to each parish would be £125 per month. That’s a cool £1,450 per annum.

The Club is open to up to 100 members who agree to belong for a year at a time.

Each member is allocated a number or numbers. Each month, a draw takes place; the owner of the first number drawn wins £35, the owner of the second number drawn wins £15. At Christmas, an additional draw takes place for a prize of £100. The cost to members is just £3 per month. The simplest way to pay is to set up a standing order of £3 per month, either in the bank or with online banking. As an alternative, members can pay by cheque; one annual payment of £36 or two half yearly payments of £18. The PCC's agreed that each parish hosts the draw on alternate months. The cost of prizes would be equally shared by the two parishes. The revenue for each parish simply depends on how many of their allocation of numbers they sell (Tycoch has been allocated 1-50 inclusive; Killay 51-100 inclusive).

Mothers’ Union Killay Mr Peter Moule, representing Blood Bikers, with motorcyclist Mr Jeff Lloyd, came on November 6th to talk about the vitally important work of the charity. Blood Bikers started as a fundraising and training exercise in 2011 with just 5 people and 3 bikes (2 Yamahas and a Suzuki) based locally. It now has 20 powerful bikes in Wales. Locally the area covered is from Carmarthen to Bridgend, the biggest one in Wales. Jeff Lloyd is an ex-police officer motorcyclist who passed the Advanced Motorcycle test with honours. He brought his bike along to the hall ‘for the ladies to sit on it’ – sadly no takers!

Blood Bikers fills a vital gap in the NHS, funded entirely by the public, from shops and business and various groups from all over Wales; the Peoples Postcode Lottery donated £10,000. No member of Blood Bikers takes a salary. One member climbed all 3 highest peaks in Wales in 12 hours for sponsorship; they also run a school education service. Each area has a controller and bikers can be called out for life saving missions at any time to take urgent blood samples for testing. It may be, for example, from a cancer unit or premature baby ward. “Billy Rubin” is not a little person but a special blood test for babies.

Breast milk is always in demand for babies whose mothers may be too ill to feed them and bikers collect frozen milk from milk banks. The main centre in the UK is in Chester; there are none in Wales. The first milk bank was established in Queen Charlotte’s Hospital in Chiswick in 1938.

The 7 groups of Blood Bikers around the UK average 250,000 miles yearly and around 1,100 miles over a weekend, often working in relays for long distance calls. The service cost £77,000 a year to run. If you see a bright yellow bike, give them a wave. Jeff said, contrary to popular belief, it is not illegal for bikes to progress between 2 lanes of traffic.

On November 20th, Canon Phillip Gwynn kindly made time to talk about the trip he and his wife, Sian, made to China. There was a problem to overcome; they needed visas to enter China – priests, it seems, are not welcome. While Sian had a visa for 90 days and multiple entries, Canon Phillip was allowed one lifetime entry for only 15 days, after an interview at the Chinese Embassy in London.

China is a vast country with a population of 1.37 billion. Their trip began in Beijing which has a population of 21 million. The country has many statues of dragons nesting on a large ball which represents the world; if the dragon has a claw resting on the ball, it is male.

During his talk, Canon Phillip showed photos on the screen of the Forbidden City where the Emperor once lived, and the mausoleum of Mao Tse Tung. In Tiananmen Square, there were tanks and secret police.

The trip took in Xian and the Great Wall which is 3,516 miles long. Canon Phillip walked about a mile, saying underfoot it is quite rough. Photos of the Terracotta Army pits showed how vast the 3 pits were with soldiers, horses and chariots. Another showed the inside of a Buddhist Temple, the monks taking no notice of visiting tourists.

Flying into Nanjing, previously the capital city, things became more westernised; photos showed a House of Fraser store and toy shop Hamleys. One shot looked quite like our Piccadilly Circus. After taking the bullet train to Shanghai, our intrepid travellers visited the old town and took tea the Chinese way (no milk) in the tea rooms once visited by our Queen Elizabeth. They then visited the Bund, the business area.

Sian is not too keen on Chinese food and certainly didn’t fancy the food in one local market – deep fried spiders, chocolate covered silk worms and centipedes. It was quite a relief to find a hotel serving steak and chips. There was also the ubiquitous Irish Pub and multiple McDonalds.

Diana Mowat thanked Canon Phillip for his presentation and knowledgeable talk.

Music Society Killay At our November meeting we were pleased to welcome our good friend the Rev. Clive Williams. His subject for this visit was the classical composer Franz Joseph Haydn. He is known as the “Father of symphony”, having actually invented it. He wrote 104 symphonies.

Firstly, Clive played us Haydn’s “Gypsy Rondo” which had an Austrian Tyrolean style.

Haydn was born on March 31st 1732, in a small village called Rohrau in Austria, on the eastern border with Hungary. Undoubtedly, he would have heard the typical Hungarian gypsy music which later influenced him.

He was the 2nd eldest of 12 children. His father, Mathias, was a farmer and a wheelwright – a very valued and necessary occupation in those times of carts and carriages.

One story about his early talent is that travelling players came to his village. Aged 4, he was entranced, took up 2 sticks and followed the players, waving the sticks as if to conduct them. His cousin, who was choirmaster in nearby Hainburg, sensed his early talent and offered to take Haydn and teach him. His mother wanted him for the church but, eventually, capitulated and let him go – then aged 6. He sang masses in the church choir and also learned the violin and harpsichord.

Clive then played Haydn’s “Allegro in F”.

It is said that, on one occasion, as the village band was leading a harvest procession, the drummer fell ill.

Haydn wanted to step in. He found an old flour bin, stretched a cloth over the top and struck it with 2 twigs only to be covered in flour! But music was in his blood.

In 1740, when he was 8, his life changed.

The musical director of St Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, heard him singing and he became a chorister there, along with his brother. He remained there for 9 years and learned much in practical terms but was disappointed having no instruction in composition. So Haydn set about teaching himself. One day, the organist found him trying to compose. Haydn said it was church music. But, instead of the usual 4 parts, he was attempting 12 parts! The organist cruelly remarked “Silly boy, aren’t 2 parts enough?” It should have deterred him but quite obviously it did not.

In the cathedral, the young boys sat slightly lower down in the front row and the older boys and men higher up behind them.

Haydn’s voice broke so he joined the back rows. The story goes that, at one service, the Archbishop of Vienna preached for 45

minutes. Haydn, becoming bored and having a handy pair of scissors, cut off the pigtails of all the boys in front of him! This may be apocryphal but something certainly led to him being beaten and turned out of the cathedral, aged 17, with no money and nowhere to live. A friend found him lodgings and he took various menial jobs.

He bought a dilapidated harpsichord. He studied musical works, notably 6 sonatas by C.P.E. Bach and continually practised them.

He became a barber’s boy and one of his jobs was to dress wigs. He took a few pupils and had just enough money to live on. He was a hard worker.

He came to the attention of composer and singing teacher Nicola Porpora. Haydn became his accompanist and Porpora would correct his compositions. He wrote a setting for a mass and started to become famous.

Next, Clive played the last movement of Haydn’s “Sonata in D Major” for piano/ harpsichord.

In 1759 he came to the attention of the Emperor of Austria’s chamberlain, Von Fürnberg in whose home he played chamber music and there he wrote his first string quartets. He was paid £20 per year (equivalent of about £3,800). He married the daughter of his former employer, the barber. Maria had a terrible temper and did not like music or housework!! - an awful

situation. They parted and he never married again.

Then he became musical director for Count Von Morzin and, having an orchestra of about 16 musicians, he wrote his first symphony. The format of a symphony is: 1st movement – fast 2nd movement – slow and leisurely 3rd movement – lilting and light 4th movement – fast and furious Next came the Esterhazy patronage. Prince Esterhazy’s family were rich, famous and loved music. In 1761 he became their deputy musical director composing and conducting the prince’s orchestra in his castle at Eisenstadt, some 30 miles from Vienna. The castle was magnificent and its construction was based on the palace of Versailles, with 126 rooms. Haydn now composed, wrote operas and produced plays. He was very happy there and remained with them to the end of his life.

The story goes that the prince did not like giving his players any time off, so Haydn wrote a special symphony where, during the performance, the players would leave the stage, a few at a time, at intervals, until only 2 or 3 were left. It is called the “Farewell Symphony” and is performed exactly that way, even now.

Clive then played a little of the “Imperial Symphony” which was composed for his prince.

By now, Haydn’s fame had reached Russia and he composed several Russian quartets.

He visited Vienna frequently and became a friend of Mozart who called him ‘Papa Haydn’, regarding him as a father figure.

From 1768 to 1774, he matured and composed many and varied works.

In 1791, concert manager Salomon invited Haydn to come to England. He was awarded a Doctorate of Music by Oxford University.

The son of George III (the Prince of Wales) played the cello accompanied by Haydn. He made several more visits to England. He always had a fear that people might ‘nod off’ during his works so he composed the “Surprise Symphony”. During the slow and gentle 2nd movement, there is a sudden loud crash of noise, enough to wake up anyone!

At a Handel memorial festival at Westminster Abbey, he stood up and cried out “He is the master of us all”.

Eventually, he retired to a small cottage outside Vienna and took on a student – Beethoven!

They had conflicting personalities - Haydn a quiet gentleman, Beethoven strong willed and highly strung.

Haydn said of him “He is either a fool or a genius”.

Beethoven’s first sonata was dedicated to Haydn.

In 1797 Salomon gave Haydn a libretto taken from “Paradise Lost” for which Haydn wrote the music, which would become “The Creation”.

Clive then treated us to “The Heavens Are Telling”.

His eyesight failing, Haydn finally composed some songs. At 76, he was carried in his wheelchair to hear “The Creation’ but only stayed a short time. As he left, Beethoven kissed him and Haydn raised his hands in a blessing.

On May 26th 1809, he asked to be carried to his piano and he played the Austrian hymn from the “Kaiser” quartet, 3 times. We know it as the hymn “Austria” to the words “Glorious things of thee are spoken”. He died on May 31st 1809.

( Viv Davies and Vicki Clement were similarly recognised but unable to be present)......... We wonder how many gallons of gravy and custard they have produced over many years.?!?………

In Victorian England, turkeys were popular for Christmas dinners. Some of the birds were raised in Norfolk, and taken to market in London. To get them to London, the turkeys were supplied with boots made of sacking or leather. The turkeys were walked to market. The boots protected their feet from the frozen mud of the road.

Boots were not used for geese: instead, their feet were protected with a covering of tar.

Strictly Come Swansea It may have been two days after Bonfire night but the Brangwyn stage was set alight with fire and a dramatic, explosive, colourful and sparkling show.

The brilliant Brendan Cole with an entourage of 12 musicians and 8 dancers took to the stage for a two hour extravaganza of a show entitled All Night Long. The superb performance was packed with every Strictly dance you could name.

The audience delighted in a romantic rhumba, wonderful waltz, pulsating pasa double, stimulating salsa and words can’t describe the Argentine tango.

Sat only four rows from the stage you could see first hand every heel lead, chassis and cookarajas!!

The many changes of costumes presented a glittering array of chiffon, lycra and sequins and that was just the men!!

The dancing was also complemented by talented West End singer Jenna Lee-James and jazz artist Ian MacKenzie.

However the stand out moment for three sisters from Killay was during Brendan’s Q&A session when he walked around the audience. When asking “who had a birthday” all three received a birthday kiss from the handsome dancer. A certain Barbara Roberts and her siblings haven’t washed since!!

We all scored it with a big 10.
