he UK division of healthcare giant has used business intelligence specialist, Morgan Benjamin (www.morganbenjamin.co.uk) to streamline its product data and enhance its sales reporting procedures. An integral part of the organisation’s global strategy to migrate to an SAP enterprise system, the project implemented by Morgan Benjamin included an upgrade to Cognos 8. The UK division handles stock that is imported from around the world and distributes more than 1,000 product lines to its network of retail outlets around the UK, with customers including the major supermarkets and pharmaceutical chains. The process generates huge amounts of data such as product specification, costs, sales and price, which is also broken down by retail brand and store location. The resulting reports are a key tool for many of their business units, in particular the marketing department which uses them to measure the success of promotional campaigns. As part the Cognos environment upgrade, Morgan Benjamin restructured their data. This makes information showing sales figures for an item over a specified time period broken down by customer and individual branch easier and faster to build into databases and more flexible to use. Static PDF reports have been replaced by interactive online ones that enable them to align immediately increases in sales with specific promotions. Viewed in near real time, they can also be
‘drilled down’ into if further details are required on the figures presented. In addition, there is now one unified storage source for the product catalogue so all data used in reports is more reliable because it comes from a single source.
