WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH 2021

Mentor / Mentee Relationship: Mia, Wei, and Kristy March 25, 2021

WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH 2021

“One of the greatest rewards of mentorship is the community of support that you build around each other, where you give each other the confidence and tools to help one another succeed. When that community grows, it is a beautiful thing, and last year I had the pleasure of adding Wei to the mentorship community that began with Kristy. In our trio, Kristy and Wei provide peer-to-peer mentoring, which in turn bolsters the dialogue that they have personally with me. They both challenge me to be a better guide for them as individuals and give me the direction to steer the Studio in a way in which I know is supportive of its progressing female leaders.

Mia Lee is a Senior Associate and Studio Director of the firm’s education and institutions studio. She holds a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Pennsylvania, Penn School of Design and a Bachelor of Arts in Engineering and Art from Lafayette College.

During Kristy’s first year at Dattner, she became my mentee, my desk neighbor, and the Project Architect on my team. Through these various opportunities we developed both a layered mentorship, spanning from the big picture of Kirsty’s career trajectory down to nitty gritty detail development, as well as a friendship from being “desk-mates.” This year propelled Kristy into a new role, a working mother. Through our chats, I was able to impart some of my hard lessons learned of navigating this life transition and give Kristy the assurance to make decisions about her career that are best for her now. I am so grateful for the opportunity to know Kristy and witness her development as an exceptional design generator and well-rounded architect. I’m continually impressed by Wei’s fearlessness and sincerity, and our mentoring relationship gave me an opening to know Wei personally and to understand her path. Our conversations begin work-related, but almost always take a turn to the philosophical, and I always find myself more uplifted after speaking with her. Wei’s new role as Studio Resource Leader will allow for us to work closely with each other, for me to share my experiences with her, and for her to develop her natural leadership abilities.” — Mia Lee AIA

WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH 2021

“I remember it vividly, even if it feels like ages ago. It was Dattner’s 2019 holiday party. We talked loudly and laughed heartily, standing closer to six inches apart than six feet. Margaritas flowed, not a mask in sight, and no sneeze guard over the taco bar … and this all seemed normal. Who knew it would be so long before we’d ever be together again at a social event? I’m so glad that during this party, I seized the opportunity to ask Mia to be my mentor. I’ve always admired her approach to her role as studio director for Studio 3, particularly her genuine care for the studio’s employees. She happily accepted my proposal, and it’s been an invaluable relationship ever since.

Wei Wang is a Project Architect. She received her Bachelor of Architecture from Pratt Institute and studied furniture design at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts.

Our formal mentor/mentee relationship gives me a safe space to share my thoughts with someone who understands professional life at Dattner as intimately as I do, but from a more seasoned perspective. The fact that we don’t work on the same projects allows for conversation that goes beyond day-to-day problem-solving, and more typically frames work in the broader context of my career and personal development. Above all though, I cherish the opportunity I’ve had to get to know Mia as a person. Especially through this extended period of being away from the office, away from my colleagues, it has been so valuable to simply be able to talk to my mentor and find connections in our common experiences.” — Wei Wang AIA, LEED AP BD+C

“After four years of mentorship, Mia has become so much more than that. She is someone I admire professionally, someone who has become a part of my support system at Dattner, and most of all a good friend. I lean on her guidance and experience, especially in this year of immense change with working remotely and becoming a new mother. The thing I value most about my relationship with Mia is that she is always honest and transparent. Whether we are discussing my career goals, the challenges with working from home in this new climate, or how our last project together went, I can always count on Mia to be truthful and guide me towards a resolution or a goal that works specifically for me. I am so grateful to have the support of a woman in an otherwise male dominated industry.”

Kristy Phillips is a Project Architect. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Virginia and a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania.
