Ostomy surgery, also called as bowel diversion, is a process that re-routes the movement of the intestinal content out of the body via a small opening made on the abdominal wall. The opening is called as ostomy or stoma. It can be temporary or permanent, depending on the seriousness of the disease. An ostomy device is prosthetic medical equipment that gives a means for the collection of waste from a surgically diverted biological system (colon, ileum, bladder) and the formation of a stoma.
