Portfolio Presentation Daryle Hawkins PD 2011
IRoc 1”x1.75” Jan 2011 Nickel I made this hollow form ring from one solid sheet of nickel. I enjoyed hammering it into shape but geDng the apple contour was quite difficult.
8”x11” Copic Markers and Pencils Was one of Trygve Faste’s Shapes of the day when I drew it I truly felt that my renderings had vastly improved since the beginnings of his class. I find chrome is an elegant surface for machines.
8”X11” SUMMER 2011 COPIC MARKERS AND PENCILS I LEARNED SEVERAL DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES TO RENDERING ACCURATE IMAGES AS WELL AS THE FACT THAT SOME FIRMS HAVE A SPECIFIC STYLE THAT ALL THE DESIGNERS PRODUCE. I THOROUGHLY ENJOY DESIGNING APPLIANCES ESPECIALLY ONES WITH PERSONALITY. MY BLENDER AND WASHING MACHINE HAVE NAMES AND I BELIEVE IF THEY ARE DESIGNED WITH PERSONALITY THEY WARRANT A NAME.
Fall 2011 5”x5” Handmade Porcelain TBT `le Copic Markers and Pencil Part of my copic markers collec`on I made this as an album cover for one of my favorite R&B musicians (Frank Ocean) whose songs help me grind out projects un`l early morning. It’s a rendi`on of the fishermen in the sea, a famous Japanese pain`ng, because he has a lot of references to Japanese culture in his music videos.
Leaves Jan 2010 8"x24" Black Chalk drawings My first `me ever using chalk on paper. I naturally have always been a line drawer and it’s how I most comfortably express myself.
Nega`ve Leaves Feb 2010 18"x24" Charcoal This work started out as an en`rely dark sheet of charcoal then erased away the nega`ve. My first `me ever trying this technique and I like the results because the eraser strokes seem to give it movement like an anima`on.
Vapor 3.0 11”x17” Summer 2011 Copic Markers I like this piece mainly because of the perspec`ve of the shoe. As an athlete when you see cleats on the field they are ohen running away from you.
Contained 2”x12” Winter 2010 Paper and tape A paper model of a full scale piece. It is a reflec`on of me. I have many complex parts but there is plenty of structure. I feel the need to keep myself contained however on the inside and spewing out the top I have lots of entertaining quali`es.
Turmoil March 2010 32"x 48” Charcoal and Acrylic Crayons I had a prompt to make an adapta`on of conflict on one of the largest mediums I have ever worked with. I included the bajle between nature and pollu`on. The quote reads on the wall "They will bleed black and orange from the fruits of their labor" No offense to our rivals Oregon State.
Reflec`ons of Me 8”x11” Fall 2009 Magazine clippings, Sharpie, pencil This is a reflec`on of the things I like and the things that make up who I am. I am a smooth musician with a bubbly personality. The profile of a fish is meant to be seen with the contour of the guitar to show that I go with the flow. The flipside of the page is meant to show my curiosity and the adventurous explorer I have within. I am above the influence.
Fall 2011 5”x5” Handmade Porcelain TBT `les and Various Glaze Inks, Glazes, Watercolor Under glaze, Oxides, Copic Markers, and Pencil The top two `les I created using the vinyl cujer which is something new to the department of ceramics (incorpora`ng digital design) The flower is made from one of the most dangerous oxides we have at the studio and ohen proves difficult to work with
Fall 2011 5”x5” Handmade Porcelain TBT `les and Various Glaze Inks, and Pencil These are all line drawings which is how I feel I like to comfortably express myself. It is a style that I feel defines me because I am structure and direct much like the line.
Temple Stool Fall 2011 14”x17”x14” Douglas Fir Wood The structure is inspired by the shape of a honeycomb and also stands similar to the Mayan temples in Central America. The en`re structure could be put together and maintain strength without any adhesives. Has been tested to 250lbs and has survived several back flip dismounts off the top.
Pornoligo 20”x25” Fall 2011 Acrylic Coated Linen, Locking weather resistant zippers and neon green thread My design is meant to fit on any bicycle/bike rack for him or her. The pockets are designed to fit marker/pencil sets, rulers and long objects. The fabric is acrylic coated linen that is tradi`onally used for boat covers and is highly water resistant which is mandatory in Eugene.
Fall 2011 7”x9” Vacuum formed PETG The lamp was the first light I have ever made and takes inspira`on from a flame. This was also my first `me using a vacuum former and I am inspired by what many shapes one can create with it.
