“THIS IS WHERE I’M MEANT TO BE”: 25 YEARS ON THE FRONTLINE OF HOSPICE CARE

Twenty-five years is a long time to stay anywhere. In healthcare, it is a mark of commitment, trust and belief in the work you do. This year marks 25 years since May Shurmer, a Senior Staff Nurse at ellenor, first began caring for patients with life-limiting illness and supporting families across Kent and Bexley.

We often hear phrases like, ‘What a difference a year makes’.

But what about 25 years? What kind of difference can one person make in that time?

To find out, we sat down with May Shurmer to reflect on her 25 years at ellenor supporting patients with life-limiting illnesses – and their families – and the care, kindness and dedication that have defined her journey. It was January 2001 when May first walked through ellenor’s doors. The UK was in the grip of Arctic weather. Ice, record-low temperatures and the first significant snowfall in years caused widespread disruption, even freezing sections of the coast solid.

It was against this backdrop that May first walked through the doors of ellenor: a hospice charity that provides palliative and end-of -life care to local people, of all ages, facing life-limiting illness. Yet it wasn’t the cold that May felt as she crossed ellenor’s threshold. “It was warmth,” she recalls. “When I came for my interview, I felt it straight away. It was a happy, welcoming place. I remember thinking, ‘This is where I’m meant to be. This is the place I want to nurse.’”

During her 25 years at ellenor, May has worked on the inpatient unit, with the Hospice at Home team, and, more recently, in ellenor’s Wellbeing team. The team provides practical, emotional and therapeutic support not only to the patients under ellenor’s care but to their carers and families – and, when those patients pass away, their bereaved loved ones, too.

Bringing together physiotherapy, occupational therapy, complementary therapy and family support, the Wellbeing service helps people with life-limiting conditions live as well as possible for as long as possible.

Today, May works closely with ellenor’s therapists, bringing decades of nursing experience to a wide and varied caseload within the hospice charity’s Wellbeing team. She meets all new referrals and is a steady point of contact across a busy timetable of patient groups: from seated exercise and breath-management to arts, crafts and social sessions that fight isolation and rebuild confidence.

The way she effortlessly juggles her duties across dual disciplines has inspired her colleagues to give May a nickname, which she relates with a chuckle and a grin: ‘The Wellbeing Nurse’.

Across 25 years, May has learned that early, honest support changes lives – and that families need care as much as patients do. “We get to know our patients – and their families,” she says. “People arrive with letters full of numbers and abbreviations they don’t understand,” she explains. “Part of my role is working through it with them, in plain language, so they understand what’s happening and how we can help.” Alongside the privilege of those conversations comes the hardest part of hospice care: loss. But for May, grief is inseparable from compassion.

“It’s hard,” she says softly. “Some families need so much support because the needs are so great – but 99% of the people who come, keep coming. Even when we think we’re not making much difference, they’ll say, ‘I like coming here.” You listen at ellenor. You make a difference.’ That’s why I come to work.”

So, what has changed since that snowy January morning 25 years ago?

Treatments have improved. People are living longer with complex conditions. ellenor’s Wellbeing services have grown and evolved with stronger therapeutic aims behind every activity.

But at its heart, hospice care remains unchanged.

“Compassionate care underpins everything,” May says. “It’s about listening and walking alongside people. We’re much better now at recognising the wellbeing side – that a gardening group or a craft session isn’t ‘just’ social, it’s therapeutic – but the core is still being kind, supporting patients through their journey, and helping them live their life until they die.”

Through it all, May has seen ellenor evolve into a deeply trusted hospice charity, rooted in its community and shaped by the people who work within it, just as she has found the role she was meant for.

“Some people are born for different roles in life; I’ve found mine,” May says. “Every day at ellenor is different. Every day is a learning day. And, sometimes, it’s the smallest moments that keep you going.

“I love caring for patients. I love working with families. I love being able to make a difference. But most of all, I still haven’t lost the feeling of walking into the building here at ellenor and thinking, ‘I love my job.’” www.dartfordbusinessdirectory.co.uk | www.dartfordliving.live

DEMENTIA AND THE LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY

Dementia affects millions, but LGBTQ+ older adults face distinct challenges shaped by a lifetime of stigma, discrimination, and social isolation.

Increased Risk Factors Many LGBTQ+ elders are more likely to live alone, have no children, and rely on “chosen family.” Social isolation is a known risk factor for cognitive decline.

Chronic discrimination (“minority stress”) is also linked to higher rates of depression, anxiety, cardiovascular disease, and substance use, all associated with increased dementia risk. Some transgender individuals have faced barriers to consistent healthcare, affecting long-term brain health.

Barriers in Care Settings Going in to care settings can raise fears of: • Having to “go back into the closet” • Misgendering • Same-sex partners not being recognised • Chosen family excluded from decisions Without inclusive policies, identity and relationships may not be respected.

Dementia and Identity Cognitive decline can affect how a person expresses their gender identity or sexual orientation and may reduce their ability to self-advocate. Sensitive, affirming care is essential.

Moving Forward As dementia rates rise, the LGBTQ+ community must be included in research, policy, and care models. Equity means not only treating symptoms, but respecting identity, relationships, and lived experience.

Inclusive dementia care includes: • Using correct names and pronouns • Recognising chosen family • Cultural competency training • Visible non-discrimination policies • Inclusive intake forms Person-centred, inclusive care ensures everyone can age with safety, dignity, and respect.

Dartford’s Tramtastic History

Dartford’s one billion pounds new tramway system? Well, that’s the likely cost if it was built today! 120 years have passed since an Electric Transport System first appeared in the town and district of Dartford. On St Valentine’s Day in 1906, twelve open top double deck tram cars, in maroon and cream livery, began service on the six plus miles of track.

Dartford Light Railway (DLR) operated from a depot off Burnham Road, from where cars headed out each day into the town via Station Approach, at a time when few motor vehicles were on the road.

One of the conductors on the opening day later trained as a driver (Motorman). He went on to become, in later years, Mayor of Dartford. The Tram Centre was outside the former Coaching Inn, The Bull Hotel, where during track construction the old town stocks were uncovered! From here, for the sum of 1 to 4 old Pence (240 to a Pound then) an adult could travel the system, whilst workmen and children’s fares were less.

Cars would head up West Hill on to Crayford, then to Bexleyheath, also with a Tramway, along with Erith. In later times, with more connections, it was possible to travel into London by Tram, yet very uncomfortable! Though Eastward you could only travel to Horns Cross via Stone, as South Eastern Railway opposed further travel to Swanscombe, as the Gravesend and Northfleet Tramway was reachable! However, a Motor Bus was later used to cover the gap.

One other Route led along Lowfield Street, to a Terminus at The Orange Tree in Wilmington. There were plans to extend travel beyond Farningham, however that never materialised due to costs involved. Again, the route was covered by Motor Bus! In Dartford Tramway’s first year, one Million journeys were made, ten times the Council’s estimate. It was operated

by JG White Co Ltd, on behalf of the Council, which had a committee of Councillors who reported on progress and costs.

Later replacing White were Balfour Beatty (Dartford Tramway being the company’s first customer). Alex Balfour, as Manager at Dartford, was very hands on, arranging Motor Transport and six 56 seater Tram Cars to be sent to Transfer 300 officers and Men From Royal Navy Ships. They were moored off Greenhithe, picking up at Horns Cross, and returning to Dartford for a celebration meal with dignitaries, arranged by Dartford Urban District Council.

A few years later, in 1911, Alex arranged for Tram Car No.12 to be decorated similar to three cars on the opening in 1906.

It had Union Jack banners and floral arrangements, with boards added to the sides, festooned with Electric Light Bulbs celebrating George V’s Coronation. Likewise, the town too was decorated for the Event.

During 1914 the Trams were vital in moving munition workers to factories in Crayford and Hawley, with the start of WWII. Six Cars would be sent at shift changes to Vickers Crayford, returning to homes and hostels in and around Dartford. In busy times, like Bank Holidays, trams were always very popular and one Bank Holiday they ran disastrously hot!

The total cost to set up the Tramway at the beginning was a reasonable £93,000. At the time, towns across the country were embracing the latest form of travel, setting up Tramways which kept costs down. Eventually, the slow and uncomfortable trams were replaced in the 1930s with faster, more comfortable trolleybuses and later buses, as today.

Blackpool, and several continental cities such as Brussels, retained trams. While Croydon, in recent times, brought them back and has proven a very popular local transport method.

This year a limited Edition booklet on Dartford’s tramway, by Ann E Watkins and yours truly, is to be published, showing various things from journeys along the route in tinted views, the building of it to a copy of the 1906 opening booklet. See page 50 for more information on the book.

Banana & Blueberry Bread with Lime drizzle

A really easy banana bread, with the delicious addition of blueberries and a zesty lime drizzle.

Recipe

What you w

ill need

100g Butt er or Marg arine 100g Bro wn Suga r (or whit that’s wh e a cupboard t you have in your if ) 2 Eggs 2 Banana s 225g Self Raising F lour 100g Blu eberries 50g Icing Sugar 1 Lime You will a lso need a loaf tin.

What to do: Mash the bananas up in a small bowl.

Cream the Butter/Margarine and Sugar together until pale and creamy.

Add the Egg and mix until combined.

Stir in the bananas.

Carefully fold in the flour – try not to overmix. Once combined, stop mixing.

Add the blueberries and combine gently.

Grease your loaf tin with a bit of margarine and add a strip of baking paper.

Carefully pour your cake mix into the prepared tin.

Level the mix in the tin. Making a bit of a dip in the middle of the mix will encourage it to bake level.

Bake at 170° Fan (185°) for 30 minutes.

Check the cake is cooked by inserting a skewer into the middle – if it comes back out with mix on it, leave to bake for a few minutes more.

Toward the end of baking, combine the juice of the Lime with the Icing Sugar until smooth, When baked, remove from oven and spoon the Lime Icing mix over the top of the cake.

Leave to cool before removing from the tin.

Orchard Theatre nears final stages ahead of reopening in December

Over recent months, Dartford Borough Council has delivered major improvements to the Orchard Theatre, including the full removal of RAAC concrete from the roof, upgrades to key areas of the building, and enhanced accessibility for customers. This has been a substantial and highly technical programme and, although the scale of the work has resulted in it taking longer than originally thought, it ensures the theatre will be future-proofed for many years to come.

With many complex elements now complete and a clear programme of remaining works over the coming months, the Council is preparing for a phased handover to Trafalgar Theatres – the venues division of global live entertainment company, Trafalgar Entertainment – at the end of November 2026, with all safety systems fully operational. Some final works will continue into December as the venue moves towards full readiness, but we can now confirm that the Orchard Theatre will reopen with our magical family pantomime Cinderella on Saturday 12 December 2026 with star casting to be announced soon.

Following a meeting of Dartford’s Cabinet on Thursday 22 January, a capital project budget of up to £11.6m has been approved to complete the essential works to the Orchard Theatre, and £330,000 to allow Orchard West to continue providing theatrical performances for Dartford until September this year. The multi-award-winning temporary theatre, opened in 2023, has enabled performances to continue during the works, maintained Dartford’s cultural offer, and safeguarded local theatre-related employment.

To support a smooth handover, a small number of upcoming performances will need to be cancelled. Trafalgar Theatres will contact all affected customers directly.

Jeremy Kite, Leader of Dartford Borough Council, said: “We’re delighted to be moving into the final stage of this project. Work on our beloved Orchard Theatre has turned into a marathon, not a sprint, but it was essential to address every issue that we’ve encountered, so that we can have a wonderful facility that will serve this town for years ahead. Thank you to residents and theatre-goers for their patience — we’re getting very close to welcoming audiences back later this year.”

Helen Enright, CEO Trafalgar Theatres, said: “We’re excited to be working towards taking back the keys to the Orchard Theatre and bringing the full range of live entertainment including large scale musicals back to its traditional home in Dartford. The Orchard Theatre is an important part of the community, and we can’t wait to reopen with an outstanding programme, including our much-loved pantomime season. A heartfelt thank you to our customers for their continued support, patience, and understanding, while we’ve been operating Orchard West for the last three years. We look forward to a bright future in our newly enhanced Orchard Theatre which will secure live entertainment in Dartford for many years to come.”

Does family history have any relevance now?

Years ago, photographs, diaries, letters and other keepsakes were handed down, through the generations as something to show the development and history of our families.

My own family were great hoarders; consequently, I have birth, death and marriage certificates, dating back to 1790, photos, diaries, written memories and an autograph book, not to mention a number of badges, letters, postcards and other mementos.

Stories my grandparents told me, together with recollections from other family members fuelled my desire to know more about them and to delve deeper into their lives via the popular family history sites. In all honesty, many of the keepsakes I have, have been invaluable in piecing together my family history and satisfying my curiosity to find out more about my ancestors.

My children have their own recollections of their grandparents and wider family, but not the desire to delve deeper into their histories. Due to distance contact with family members wasn’t always practical, so the memories and stories weren’t always passed on.

to keep hold of these documents and such? They offer an insight into how our families grew over time. They celebrate the bravery and commitment of some, while showing the hardships past generations had to endure.

Yet the logical side of me is in full agreement with them.

Just the sheer number of physical items is enough to deter anyone from taking responsibility for this. Some of the paperwork is very fragile, much of it is written in fading brown ink, in copperplate, making it almost impossible to read. The photographs show unsmiling families in stiff and formal poses. Some images are frankly scary! Why would anyone want to hang onto such stuff in this age of AI, phone cameras and social media?

I have decided to put the medals and badges up for sale, hoping they will find buyers who appreciate their age and history. I made a difficult decision to throw out most of the photos – even those with identified images hold no meaning for me. I still have original D Day media, embroidered postcards from WW1 and 1940s concert programmes. I have a small, silver football trophy dated 1943-44 from when my dad played for a Dartford team but does anyone remember Assembly (1) being league winners that year?

Times change too.

Families are less likely to function as one large entity – large families less likely to be the norm now. Many people move away to start their own life often far away from the family home. Children are more likely to form relationships with childminders or preschool staff than they are with their own immediate families. That is life.

I do wonder how all this will end. Will we cease to hold family history as important? Will it become a topic best forgotten.

So, what do I do with items I have carefully kept over the years? In some cases, the paperwork is over two hundred years old. The family tree has over 200 members in it.

Understandably, neither of my children are interested in taking over or giving them house room. Their comments, sad, but totally sensible, relate to the lack of relevancy their ancestors have on their own lives. To put it starkly they have no idea who these people are nor the desire to care for the physical items which have no meaning for them.

However, in my opinion, such action would be almost criminal. Those before us deserve to be remembered, after all without them, there would be no us!

The Japanese have a saying “How you grow up is more important than blood”, so maybe family history isn’t important.

This can lead to daytime tiredness, poor work performance, and a higher risk of accidents. Studies show that people with insomnia are more likely to experience anxiety and depression.

The good news is that most sleep problems can be treated. Simple changes in bedtime habits can make a big difference. Healthy sleep depends on circadian rhythms, which are the body’s natural internal clock. Going to bed and waking up at the same time each day, even at weekends, along with getting natural sunlight during the day, helps keep this rhythm balanced. Avoid napping during the day. Avoid caffeine after early afternoon and avoid alcohol before bed, as this worsens sleep quality. Blue light from screens suppresses melatonin – your sleepy hormone – so put these away around 1 hour before bedtime. Ensure your bedroom is cool, dark and quiet to provide the right environment for sleep.

Try not to stay in bed if you are unable to sleep. After 20 minutes, get up and do something calm in dim light until you feel sleepy. If anxiety or overthinking is keeping you awake, do a brain dump of what is on your mind onto a piece of paper.

Try breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation or guided sleep meditation.

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Another serious but often undiagnosed condition is obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).

OSA happens when the airway becomes blocked during sleep, causing breathing to stop for short periods (apnoeas). This reduces oxygen levels in the body and puts strain on the heart. OSA can increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. More importantly, it can increase daytime sleepiness and increase risk of road traffic accidents. People with OSA tend to snore loudly, have short periods when their breathing stops and then gasp as they start breathing again.

Your GP can help to determine if this is the likely diagnosis and refer you for expert opinion and treatment.

Traditional (Spring) Cleaning Tips

By Christina Uppenkamp Home Instead Welcome to the latest edition of Senior Snippets: the monthly advisory column with the older members of our community in mind, brought to you by Christina Uppenkamp of Home Instead Dartford.

Despite all the powerful new cleaning products available on the shelves today that use advanced chemical technology and sophisticated ingredients, many cleaning jobs can be just as effectively done using old-fashioned cleaning remedies.

These are tried and tested methods that have been passed down from generation to generation and are just as effective today as they were before the invention of fancy and expensive cleaners and sprays.

Removing limescale from kettles: There’s nothing like a good cup of tea. To keep your kettle clean and free from limescale, just boil the kettle and switch it off. Then, add two tablespoons of citric acid powder and leave to cool. Once it has cooled off, pour the solution down the sink and re-boil the kettle twice with fresh water. This traditional fix not only dissolves the limescale, but also prolongs the life of the kettle.

Cleaning a wooden chopping board: All you need is some coarse salt and a lemon. Simply sprinkle the board with coarse salt, scour the surface with half a cut lemon, squeezing to release the juice and leave it for five minutes. Then, scrape the residue off the board and rinse with a clean wet sponge.

Natural carpet freshener: Here’s a simple solution to remove wet dog and stale smells from your carpet; sprinkle a light dusting of bicarbonate of soda onto the carpet before vacuuming to remove smells and freshen the room.

Cleaning your washing machine: Rid your washing machine from mould and musty smells with a vinegar rinse once in a while. All you have to do is add a cup of white vinegar to the drum of the washing machine and do an empty wash on the hottest cycle. Do this every 2-3 months to keep things fresh and fragrant.

Sparkling windows: White vinegar (a natural disinfectant and deodoriser) and newspaper will give you windows that sparkle and shine. Mix one part white vinegar with one part warm water in a spray bottle and spray on to your windows.

While crumpled newspaper is the traditional choice for polishing, a clean microfiber cloth is a great modern alternative if you want to avoid ink marks on white window frames. Note: Avoid vinegar on frosted or leaded glass.

The next time you need to do some household cleaning, don’t rush out to buy a host of harsh chemical cleaners. It is amazing what simple household items such as lemons, salt and bicarbonate of soda can do. Not only are they better for the environment but they are often better for your purse too!

In this month’s edition we have 3 new electric models, coming to the UK this year from East Asia.

Hyundai Staria MPV - Hyundai will launch the fully electric Staria MPV in the UK in late 2026, replacing the hybrid versions sold elsewhere with an 84kWh battery and a 215bhp front-mounted motor. It targets rivals such as the Kia PV5 and Volkswagen ID Buzz. The Staria is expected to deliver around 249 miles of range and support rapid 10–80% charging in about 20 minutes, along with vehicle to load capability. Two versions will be offered in Europe — a seven seat Luxury and a nine seat Wagon — though UK specs remain unconfirmed. Inside, it features dual 12.3 inch displays and wireless smartphone integration. Prices are not confirmed but could start from £50,000.

New Geely EX2 - arriving in the UK in summer 2026 from around £20,000, will join the growing small EV segment as Geely’s smallest UK model. Known as the Xingyuan in China—where it was the best selling car of 2025—it will rival the Renault 5, MG4 Urban, Kia EV2, Cupra Raval, Skoda Epiq and VW ID Polo. Expected battery options mirror the Chinese version: 30kWh with a 78bhp motor and 193 mile CLTC range, or 40kWh with 114bhp and 255 miles. Inside, it features a 14.6in touchscreen, 8.8in digital display, 375 litre boot and a 75 litre frunk.

Chery Lepas - Chery has confirmed that Lepas will become its fourth brand in the UK, launching later in 2026. Designed for Europe, Lepas will focus on plug in hybrid and fully electric models, with its name combining “leopard”, “leap” and “passion.” Initial UK models are unconfirmed, but reports suggest the L4 and L6 SUVs— closely related to the Jaecoo 5, Omoda 5 and Omoda 7—will arrive first, offering combustion, plug in hybrid and electric options. Lepas’s styling resembles Chery’s Tiggo line, though future Tiggo models will adopt chunkier styling to differentiate the brands. The March Hare and The Turtle Dove

Joey Mulharne recalled the fight minute by minute as he now stood on the pebbled moonlit beach, looking out at the ocean before him. He’d been a professional boxer for over ten years, and had never experienced the kind of punishment inflicted upon him in the ring as he did earlier that day. His opponent was a much younger man who was an up-and-comer in the light heavyweight division. Joey remembered the devastating body blows and fierce right uppercut that took him off his feet, and left him out for the count. Although the physical pain that he felt after the fight was immense, it was the shame and humiliation of defeat that was the hardest blow. Joey was a warrior who had won most of his fights – he was a contender… but now… it was all over. At just twentynine years of age, life seemed to have lost its meaning for him. What else could he do? Boxing was the only life he had known, and now he was already a forgotten force.

As he looked out at the swirling waves of the ocean, it was almost as though they were mocking him… beckoning him. Dark thoughts entered his troubled soul. It was then that he saw her.

She was a lot further up the beach from Joey, but he could just make out the glimmer from her light dress. She had long black hair that seemed to dance in the sea air. She held her shoes in her hand, and stood very close to the edge of the water.

He felt compelled to approach her.

When Joey was just a few yards away from her, he plucked up the courage to speak. ‘Are you okay?’ he asked, gently.

The young woman turned slowly to Joey, as if in a trance. ‘Who are you?’

He noticed a slight Irish lilt to her voice. ‘Joey,’ he replied.

She looked at him. ‘What happened to your face?’

He smiled foolishly. ‘You should see the other guy.’

‘You’re a fighter?’

‘Boxer...’ Joey suddenly felt vulnerable. ‘At least… I was,’ he said.

‘You have sad eyes.’

‘Do I?’ ‘It will pass. In time. Life is too short to let sorrow get you down. We all experience moments that question our existence. I know I have…’

Joey felt compassion enter his soul. ‘What is your name?’

‘Teagan. It means Little Poet.’

Joey felt his woes slipping away. There was something about Teagan that touched his heart. ‘Do you often come here?’

She nodded, and looked out to the ocean. ‘I come here to remind myself that life is precious. That we are just one tiny grain of sand in the grand scheme of things.’

‘I hadn’t thought of it like that. You’re right.’ A weight seemed to fall off Joey’s shoulders.

‘You just have to look around you. I mean really look around you.’ There was a moment’s hesitation before she felt comfortable enough to confide in Joey. ‘Do you know what I saw just the other day?’

‘What?’

Joey’s attention was piqued. ‘How do you mean?’

Teagan’s eyes lit up as she recalled the vision. ‘The turtle dove would land near the march hare, and when the hare ran to it, the bird would slowly rise up in the air flapping its wings, and then land again nearby. This went on for quite a while. They were playing a game. They were enjoying life.’ Her eyes glistened as she replayed the scene in her mind. ‘It was such a beautiful thing to see...’

They both looked out to the ocean. There was a silence between them that was not intrusive. It was a shared bond that now existed among two strangers who relished the enormity of this mad glorious existence, and they bathed in its majesty.

A man’s voice could be heard faintly from afar. ‘Teagan!’

Teagan looked to the hill in the distance where the pale lights from a row of cars with caravans could be seen. ‘I will miss this place,’ she said, sadly.

‘You’re a gypsy?’

Teagan smiled at Joey. ‘Romany.’ She put on her shoes, turned, and began running towards the hill. ‘Keep the faith,’ she called back, joyfully, as she slowly faded into the darkness.

Why person-to-person therapy still matters

I’ve recently found a few clients mentioning that they have turned to AI platforms to seek guidance when they’ve felt low.

Artificial intelligence is now part of everyday life, including the way people seek information and support for their mental health. Apps and AI tools can be useful for learning about emotions, tracking moods, or prompting self-reflection. They can be convenient and easy to access. However, while AI can play a supportive role, it cannot replace the value of real human therapy.

Therapy is not just about techniques or advice. It is built on a relationship between two people. Sitting with a trained professional who is fully present allows for a level of understanding that technology cannot offer. A human therapist can hear hesitation in a voice, notice changes in body language, and respond to emotions as they arise. These moments matter, especially when someone is sharing difficult or painful experiences.

Working with a person also provides safety and responsibility. Therapists follow ethical guidelines, protect confidentiality, and are trained to respond when someone is distressed or at risk. They can adjust their approach in real time and take responsibility for the care they provide. AI systems do not hold this responsibility and cannot offer genuine care, even if their responses seem supportive.

Another important aspect of person-to-person therapy is being truly seen and heard. Many struggles—such as grief, trauma, anxiety, or shame—are eased through connection. Being understood by another human without judgment can help rebuild trust, self-confidence, and a sense of belonging. This kind of healing comes from relationship, not from automated responses.

This does not mean AI has no place in mental health support. It can be helpful for education, self-help tools, or as an additional resource alongside therapy. Used in this way, it may lower barriers and encourage people to seek help. What matters is recognising its limits and not expecting it to replace human connection.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or alone with your thoughts, reaching out to a professional can make a real difference. Speaking with a qualified counsellor or therapist gives you the chance to explore what you are experiencing in a safe and supportive space.

By Local Resident Brogan Watt I have always lived in the Bexleyheath- Dartford area. I worked in Dartford for a long time at the Masonic hall at the top of West Hill and at the train station too. I also use Dartford to run around for my runs and enjoy the area. I now attend a writers group, and we meet in Dartford. I have been delighted to be accepted for the marathon and attended the Dartford parkruns the last two weeks.
