COUNCILLOR DARRAGH BUTLER WORKING WITH SWORDS TIDY TOWNS
FINGAL COUNTY COUNCIL – INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF COUNCILLORS “In my 6+ years as a Councillor, not one single person has ever said to me that we need more Councillors. Residents want extra services and extra resources, not extra Councillors”. The next Council (Local Government) elections are due to be held in May 2014 and I will be seeking your support for re-election. Due to the recent changes announced by the Government, whilst the number of Councillors around the country is going to decrease by around 1,600 (40%) nationwide, Fingal County Council is going to increase from having 24 County Councillors to 40 – yes 40! The Balbriggan election ward will increase from 5 to 8; Howth-Malahide ward from 5 to 8; Mulhuddart ward from 5 to 8; Castleknock ward from 4 to 7; and the Swords electoral ward which also includes Donabate, Portrane, Rolestown, St. Margaret’s, Meakstown and part of Santry, from 5 to 9. I have come out strongly against this and I made a number of submissions to the Boundary Commission in this regard. It is my opinion that County Council meetings will be totally un-workable with 40
Councillors. Fingal does not need 40 Councillors. We cope very well at present with 24 and my opinion is that the additional Councillor positions are being created to save the government Councillors from losing their seats next May. In my 6+ years as a Councillor, not one single person has ever said to me that we need more Councillors. Residents want extra services and extra resources, not extra Councillors.
NEW APPLEWOOD COMMUNITY CENTRE POLLING STATION NEXT DOOR TO YOU As you may have noticed for the recent referenda, the Applewood Community Centre right next to your estate was used as a new Polling Station. The election register is broken down into Polling Districts and
basically Polling District BS (which includes the Applewood area, Castleview, Glen Ellen amongst others) was moved from voting at St. Colmcille’s Boys National School off Main Street, Swords, to the new Applewood Community Centre Polling Station. Unfortunately there was no change for you as Bunbury and Brides Glen form part of the Polling District of BD (Brackenstown 3) and are assigned to St. Cronan’s National School along with the residents of Mooretown, Laurelton, Pine Grove, Rathbeale Road / Court, Roganstown Estate, St Andrews Park, The Green and Watery Lane. At our September Swords Area meeting, I asked if this could be changed and if Bunbury and Brides Glen could also move to this new Polling Station as it is within walking distance from your estate and would be much more convenient for voters. Fingal County Council confirmed that the Franchise Section will meet with the office of the Dublin County Returning Officer to discuss the outcome of the new Polling Location and also to raise this issue. The reasons for moving the electorate of BG to Applewood Community Centre are centered around the cumulative number of people previously voting in St. Colmcille’s Boys National School while recognizing the ongoing increase in numbers living in the Applewood general area in recent years. Traffic and parking implications on Polling day for residents around the Polling Station as well as those going to vote was also a consideration.

INVESTMENT IN SWORDS CASTLE
I have received confirmation from Fingal County Council that a comprehensive Conservation Management Plan is currently being prepared for Swords Castle. This plan will be published in 2013 and will detail possible future uses for the Castle which will ensure its future conservation while at the same time maximising its economic and tourism potential. The plan will also outline and prioritise future capital investment in this important heritage property to make it accessible for these planned uses. Fingal County Council is also in discussions with Fáilte Ireland about the best ways to promote and develop Fingal and heritage properties in Fingal including Swords Castle
