Uncool: A Funded Educational Project This book is but one of many developed by students at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, as part of a funded educational studio project hosted by the Illustration Department. The class examined the ways that children are exposed to romanticized and glamorized images of guns throughout the media from a very early age. Their conclusion was that kids grow up with the overt message that guns are both fun and empowering; that they grow up thinking guns are cool. These students challenged themselves to devise materials that would provide a counterpoint to the drumbeat of our glamorized gun culture: that guns are actually Uncool. This book is the result of one such effort. Designmatters Uncool is a funded educational project under the direction of Designmatters, a College – wide social impact initiative of The Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. An engaged mode of art and design education that forms creative leaders, Designmatters provides the know-how and aspiration to shape the future for a more sustainable and equitable world. In recognition of Designmatters' service to society, Art Center became the first design school to receive Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) status by the United Nations in 2003; the department has also fostered a series of prestigious and unique global affiliations providing students access to a prominent stage for meaningful engagement. Nathan Cummings Foundation Funding for this project was made possible by the Nathan Cummings Foundation, which is committed to democratic values and social justice, including fairness, diversity, and community. They seek to build a socially and economically just society that values nature and protects the ecological balance for future generations; promotes humane health care; and fosters arts and culture that enriches communities.
