WELCOME TO YOUR

Dear theatregoer, Welcome to your latest brochure from Darlington Hippodrome.

Photo of Heather Tarran-Jones courtesy of The Northern Echo. Cover image: Curtains

This is the perfect opportunity for me to introduce myself. This brochure marks the start of a new era for the Hippodrome – and for me – as I take over the programming of the theatre following the retirement in July of our venerable director, Lynda Winstanley, after 35 years working in the arts in Darlington. Whilst I'm new to the role, I'm not new to the theatre. I arrived here in 2015 from Oxfam to fill the newly-created post of Director of Fundraising and Development, where my remit was to lead on the capital fundraising for the £13.7 million restoration of the building. Like many of us who join this wonderful team, I didn't want to leave – and so I'm thrilled to be taking on a new challenge whilst still keeping hold of my fundraising hat. Close to my heart is our new scheme A Place for Everyone - see page 39 to find out how you can help us transform lives with theatre.

KEY TO SYMBOLS

Please say hello if you see me around the building, and I'd love to hear your feedback on our latest programme and what you'd like to see here in the future. Email me at heather.tarran-jones@darlington.gov.uk I look forward to welcoming you soon to Darlington Hippodrome.

An evocative tale of the epic battle between good and evil, Jekyll & Hyde is based on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic story about a brilliant doctor whose experiments with human personality create an evil and murderous counterpart. Convinced the cure for his father's mental illness lies in the separation of Man's evil nature from his good, Dr. Henry Jekyll unwittingly unleashes his own dark side, wreaking havoc in the streets of late 19th-century London as the savage, maniacal Edward Hyde. Jekyll & Hyde is pure, pulse-pounding theatre, with a lush, romantic score hailed as a modern classic. T.REXTASY Marc Bolan, with his band T.Rex, was one of the most flamboyant and charismatic stars of the original glam rock era. With Bolan's special ingredient of rock-a-boogie songs, the band had a string of huge hits throughout the 1970s including 'Love to Boogie', 'Telegram Sam', 'Jeepster' and '20th Century Boy'. Described as 'beyond the boundaries of tribute', T.Rextasy, the world's only official live tribute band dedicated to Marc Bolan and T.Rex, have performed around the world for over 20 years – ironically longer than Marc's own T.Rex. Truly a rock 'n' roll concert for all ages - if you would like to know exactly what a Marc Bolan concert was like in the 1970s, this show is for you!
