HUA QIANG BEI One of The Silicon Valley in China The immediate future of the developed city After Shenzhen’s economic boom in 1990s, Shenzhen developed from a little fishing village into the world’s most innovative hub of technology hardwares and car manufacturing. However, in the beginning, Shenzhen mainly focused in simple manufacturing, the city began to face the pressure with many cities in China which have now bought up with Shenzhen in term of development. How could Shenzhen continue to stay ahead? The mission of the city was technology, knowledge and window to the external world. This was meant to bring benefits by taking advantage from overseas ideas which mean that some of them copy other people’s products. Huaqianbei where compile wholesaler within the district. But as other areas of the world improved their manufacturing capabilities and China became less competitive, the companies as “developers” within the community in Shenzhen cannot keep benefitting by just being a manufacturer of other people’s products. In order to keep growing, they needed to establish their own brands and own design. While the government have to support with the laws and regulations and also push them to the markets. In order to push forward Huaqiangbei become the world capital of hardware innovation. Based on the analysis, the communities in Huaqiangbei is for trading, selling and working which people from many places around the world gather together. The core interest is the way how people spend their time within one day or even their daily life. How we can change the way we see this communities, a traditional commercial in a new way. Find the possibility to re-establish this community, to redefine the definition of Huaqiangbei communities. The proposal is to purpose an alternative communal. A space that other than a traditional commercial building but, to create/design it as an iconic of the district, as world’s most innovative hub of technology.

5

Space and Organisation - The invert of communities : From city blocks to commercial buildings Huaqiangbei is a developed city block in Shenzhen known as an innovative hub of technology hardwares including electronics manufacturing and wholesale within commercial buildings which are thoroughly located along Huaqiang Road. Inside the building, the hierarchy of space is applied to organise space and location of shops. According to the photograph, It can be used as a comparison between the shops that are located on the ground floor. To the right side of the image, there are small-single shops which much more smaller compare to the middle and the left where the area of the shops are wider. However, these kind of space represent the idea of working and patterns/traces of domestication of people in a gigantic collective space.

Product and Development - Representation of working life This photograph represent working life of a seller who was making her product which a single piece of components are assembled to a product. While waiting to her customers she spent her free time assembled components. With the notion of waiting, beside selling things to customers and activities that relates to domestic pattern, there are activities to do while she wait for the time.

Logistic and Distribution - Contradiction of working life The owner in the photograph was putting her product into a paper box preparing for shipping to the customers however, she is be able to hire helper, she has one helper who helped her pack and check the products moreover, there is no machine in her shop which mean that she doesn’t sitting all day produce her own product but receive from other company. This can be seen that her life would be different from the woman in the second photograph, her life would be more comfortable and more free time than another one. These are the difference relation between her shop and ordinary shop in which the products are reserved and ordered in advance before shipping to customers which perhaps customers may order from around the world.

Routine and Boundaries - To live in a collective space The mother was carrying her son while another arm scoop the rice for him surround with small packaging and a few amount of products at the back including fan and milk bottle for her son. This image describe the combination of living and working that are occurred in the same time including shows the boundaries between her shop and the shop next to her that the boundary have to be shared also it shows that she doesn't have a good life quality as well.

As the project is developed from the conceptual design concept. In the second phases, the technical drawing was used into the project in order to make it more real and be able to construct. The atmosphere in the previous pictures show the intention idea of overlook environment where the entrance, hallway including spa and bath zones are dim in order to create a relaxing effect. Starting with the entrance from BTS where was installed warm light at the edge of both wall sides at the bottom in one line incident to black gravel. Walking into the building, the guests will see the sculpture and decoraition where the tracking light are shining to. By walking through waiting area inside with warm light on the ceiling and nice chandelier to the lobby and check-in at the recpetion which there is panel with light hidding inside, then the light will come out from both side. In this phase, I have a chance to explore and select the real materials that I imagine the idea of texture and color at the beginning of the project and also how to protect the building from climate in Bangkok by using such as coating, waterproving material and prooving membrane in the process of construction.

E. Fay jones

An American architect

Not far away from a small town in Arkansas, United States, the project is to design an office for Fay Jones, one of the famous American architects who has his own unique style in architecture works. Most of his works are always blended in with nature and forests always be his site context located in Eureka Spring, Arkansas which is Jones’s hometown. The concept use crossing structure which is inspired from his style, with symmetry structure in a rectangular plan where all the programs are located throughout the building in different levels. The materials are organic and local material such as wood and stone. The use of curtain glass es make people in the office feel like they actually are in the woods and calm their minds in the same time. All the entire office will see the outsideview of the forest from the inside wherever you are. The program inside the office are consist of wood workshop because of his boss, Fay Jones also experiment wood works and apply into his work, it is next to studio and office with arrangement employees’s zone. Library and materials resources are on the second level including meeting room at the back. The lobby at the front provided for guests to contact the office. Resting area is on the top of the building, to escape and relax from chaos, allow employees to nap in a comfort bean bags. 16

DINNING PAVILLION

The earliest Greek civilization thrived around 4,000 years ago. Greek cilization developed from Minoan and Mycenaean period. The architecture, art and religious from Mycenaean were influenced and adapted by the earlier Minoan culture (2000-1450 BC). In that period of time, the Mycenaeans built their building with a wide, strong wall from large roughly cut stones, to protect their city from the enemy. According to ancient Greek architecture, the architecture was constructed in precise forms and concerned about the proportion and ratio, Greek people believe that when they combined together it would create the result which are consist of beauty, symmetry and perfection. The proportion is one of principle in Greek architecture, it is a theory which is a connection between mathematical and art. These proportion that were used in buildings affect to human visual in term of perspective, all parts above the column of a Doric building were tilted downward so that they would appear to be vertical when viewed from below. When viewed from afar, these tilted elements would be appear in the same level. 24

Greek architecture, basically known for columns in most of their structures, has been the base of almost all aspects in construction. The shape of the column was the most significant in architectural design. Originally there are three types of columns: Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian. In Greek temple, for the characteristic features, the Doric capital is most effective on large, soaring structures. The columns are massive and the forms are simple, Its form is quiet short and and thick without a base. During the development of Doric order, the Ionic prevailed in Ionian lands. It was established on seaboard of Asia Minor by Mycenean Greeks. Ionic columns dissimilar to Doric in term of shape, decoration and the idea which it derived from its basis on the proportion of woman. Moreover, Ionic has more ornamentation and elaborate in details. Corinthian order is the third Greek orders and was also the last that was developed. The component of Corinthian column were borrowed from the Ionic order however, Corinthian can best be recognised by its capital same as the Ionic. Main decorative on the capital is the leaf of the acanthus, early form of capital has only a single row of acanthus leaves but at the lower part is the place of water leaves.

According to the information above and in the previous pages, the principles of greek architecture were applied into the dinning pavillion project. The plan and building’s shape are symmetry as well as the roof which is developed from triangle shape expan cover a building and also use glass panel to make customers feel like they are eating among big trees in the woods. Doric column is transformed into more modern doric column using string and staninless steel to construct on the plan that transformed from tradion greek plan in greek architecture. People can see the center of the building from the entrance which is counter in front of the kitchen, it means heart of the restaurant like greek temple plan where the center of the temple is the deity’s statue. There are three main parts in the building, first is the entrance with lake around. Second is dinning space and the last is at the back which is an open space for dinning. In summary, this project is to bring the principle style of Greek architecture and design a new building by apply and redesign the original one to be more moden but still keep characteristic of greek architeture witjin its form.
