‫פרשת ויצא‬ Issue No. 24

The Ultimate Sacrifice !‫ותאמר לה המעט קחתך את אישי ולקחת גם את דודאי בני‬ And she (Leah) said to her (Rochel) “Was your taking my husband insignificant and you want to take my sons dudaim?”

From the Rosh Hayeshiva ‫שליט״א‬ It is well know the sacrifice that Rochel Imeinu made by allowing her sister, Leah Imeinu, to go the chuppah in order to marry Yaacov Ovinu without any embarrassment. Rochel handed over the pre-arranged simonim, signs, that she had arranged with Yaakov to foil any eventual plot by the conniving Lovon to cheat Yaakov. One can imagine that Leah who was a great tzaddekes in her own right as evidenced by the Torah telling us that her "beauty" was her red rimmed eyes which had been crying copious amounts of tears, beseeching Hashem that she shouldn't have to marry Eisav, was for sure eternally grateful for her sister’s sacrifice. Therefore it is extremely difficult when we find later in the parsha that when the barren Rochel asks for the "dudaei" flowers (which are a segula for having children) that Reuven brings home to his mother Leah, instead of the expected gracious response, Leah indignantly accuses Rochel of not only taking her husband, but now wanting to take away these precious flowers! Even more perplexing is Rochel's agreement to her sisters complaint and she gives up her rights in order to have the flowers! Rav Sholom Schwadron zt"l explains exactly what was going on. The simonim that Yaakov gave to Rochel were the halochos pertaining to the lady of every Jewish home. Yaakov told Rochel that she must learn and know the mitzvos of challah, nida, and hadlokes haner. When Rochel saw that Leah was ultimately going to be brought under the chuppah instead of her, she made the ultimate sacrifice to give up her entire future in order that her sister should not suffer any embarrassment. She had no idea at that time that Yaakov would consent to working another seven years for her hand in marriage and she assumed that she would remain a spinster for the rest of her life. Not only did she want to save her sister the embarrassment but she did it in the best possible way. Rochel never even told Leah that there were any signs at all! Rochel went over to her sister to congratulate her on her upcoming marriage and told her that there are three things every Jewish mother must know and of course Yaakov would be most pleased if she learnt these halochos before the chasuna. As such, Leah went to the wedding with no idea at all that her sister had made such an enormous sacrifice. Says Rav Sholom, because this chessed was done in such an elevated way, Leah of course was rightly upset with Rochel for also wanting to take her flowers. And of course, in keeping with her sacrifice, Rochel agrees to her sister Leah. Because of Rochel's extreme middah to do what's right and to give up everything in order to save her sister the embarrassment, we are zoche that we have "Mamma Rochel" who constantly cries for us until Hashem promises to return her children back to their land in Eretz Yisroel bimheira vyameinu.
