From R’ Yaacov Book ‫שליט״א‬

The fundamental lesson of the Poroh Aduma. ַַ‫ֵאמרַד ֵּ֣ ֵבר‬ ֹ֑ ‫אשֶר־צ ִֶׁ֥וֹהַי ְֹהוֹֹ֖הַל‬ ֲ ַ‫ּתורֹה‬ ָ֔ ‫ֻקתַֹה‬ ֵּ֣ ‫ַ ֹ֚זאתַח‬:‫ֵאמר‬ ַֽ ‫ֶל־אֹה ֲֹ֖רןַל‬ ַֽ ‫ֶל־משֹהַוְא‬ ֶ ֶׁ֥ ‫ַוי ְד ֵּ֣ ֵברַי ְֹהוָֹ֔הַא‬ ַ‫ליֹה‬ ֶ ֹ֖ ‫רַלא־ע ֶׁ֥לֹהַע‬ ֶ ֶׁ֛ ‫ַמוםַא‬ ָ֔ ּ֙‫רַאין־בה‬ ֵ ַֽ ‫ֲש‬ ֶ ֶׁ֤ ‫ִימֹהַא‬ ֵ֗ ‫אד ָֻּ֜מֹהַּתְ מ‬ ֲ ַ‫ךַפ ָ֨רֹה‬ ֶ֩ ‫א ֶ֩לֶי‬ ֵ ַ‫אלַו ְיִק ְֵּ֣חו‬ ֵ ֵ֗ ‫ב ֵנֵּ֣יַיִשְר‬ ְ ‫אֶל־‬ ַֽ ‫ֲש‬ :‫ַֽעל‬ "Hashem spoke to Moshe and Aaron, saying: This is the statute of the Torah which Hashem has commanded, saying. Speak to the children of Israel and have them take for you a perfectly red unblemished cow, upon which no yoke was laid."

‫פרשת חקת‬

The Torah seems to refer to the individual commandment to make a Poroh Aduma as the ‘statute of the Torah’. This wording seems very perplexing. How is this one Mitzvah a statute of the entire Torah? Surely it would be more appropriate to introduce the Mitzva of Poro Aduma as being a ‘statute of the cow’ or something similar! Many suggestions are offered by the Meforshim to answer this question. R’ Yitzchok Zilberstein brings one answer that teaches us an important idea that is central to our Avodas Hashem. He explains that one of the most perplexing Halochos of the Poroh Aduma is that at the same time that it brings about purity to those who were impure, it also defiles the very people that prepared it. This teaches us that what is appropriate for one person is not always appropriate for another. We must appreciate that what seems right and just for one person is not necessarily right and just for a second person. Indeed, it is well known that that Horav Moshe Feinstein writes in his introduction to Igros Moshe that the responses contained in his Seforim were given to individuals and can not necessarily be applied to all people in all circumstances. This concept applies to many areas in our Avodas Hashem and perhaps no more so than in the chinch of our children. We are very familiar with the wise words of Shlomo Hamelech that we need to be Mechanech each child ‘Al Pi Darko’ – according to the specific nature, characteristics and capabilities of each child. This is the fundamental ‘Chukas Hatorah’ that is contained within the Mitzva of Poro Aduma. Moving towards the three weeks, we automatically start to think of ways to rectify the sin of Sinas Chinom that caused the destruction of the Beis Hamikdosh. Perhaps one small idea is to try and appreciate and respect the individuality of each and every member of Klal Yisroel. If we are able to do so, we will be one step closer to that special day when all barriers between us will break down and we will merit to see the rebuilding of the Beis Hamikdosh.
