TO LIVE A LIFE OF TORAH

‫פרשת מקץ‬ ‫שבת חנוכה‬ Issue No. 25

From the Rosh Hayeshiva ‫שליט״א‬ The gemara in Shabbos (23b) brings Rav Huna who says that one who is “‫”רגיל‬, accustomed, to fulfil the mitzvah of “Ner”, will be zoche to have children who will be talmidei chachomim. Rashi explains how this is learnt from the possuk of “ner mitzvah, vtorah ohr” that we are referring to the flame of the mitzvah of Shabbos candles and Chanukah candles. It is immediately apparent however, if one looks at the gemara, Rav Huna mentions numerous other Mitzvos which if one fulfils they are rewarded in certain ways. By all the other Mitzvos, Rav Huna uses the word "‫"זהיר‬, careful. Why the different term by lighting the candles of Shabbos and Chanukah from the other mentioned Mitzvos? The Mishmeres Eliezer answers that Rav Huna is giving us a hand with our long-time nemesis, the yetzer hara. It is well known that the yetzer hara works hardest to try to stop people from learning Torah and tries hard to ensure that we do not make Torah learning the ultimate goal for our children. The reason it works so hard in these areas is because Torah is the poison, the only weapon in fact, with which we are able to overcome the evil inclination (Kidushin 30b). Somehow the yetzer hara convinces us that we must educate ourselves and our children for if we were to “just” learn, how would we able to support ourselves?! And our vision of where we get our sustenance from, becomes distorted and instead of relying on Hkb”H, we can challila forsake our learning and under the influence of the yetzer hara, spend our time chasing our livelihood. So how on earth can one battle this strong yetzer hara and focus on limud torah and being mechanech our children to be the future talmidei chachomim?? The answer is what Rav Huna is telling us. We need to remember the mesirus nefesh our ancestors put in for the sake of limud torah. When they were faced with the enticements of Greek society and all the depravity it had to offer or to live a life of persecution and fear in order to be able to learn Torah, the Chashmoinoim stood up in arms and defeated the philosophy which the Greeks were trying to impose on them in the place of Torah. Taking time when we light our menorah to contemplate what it meant to live a life of Torah in those times, will give us the fortitude to do so as well. This why the gemara used the word "‫ "רגיל‬one who is “used to” fulfilling the mitzvah of ner Chanuka and thinking about what the miracle entailed, will be fortunate to have sons who are talmidei chachomim as he will be able to push off constant misgivings of the yetzer hara and go in the footsteps of our holy ancestors thus being able to be mechanech his children in the correct way.
