MAKER ACADEMY

Learning how to make things, especially how to use digital fabrication tools, can be scary and is not accessible to everyone in Gainesville, FL. Maker Academy is a possible solution to those issues, as a platform through which makers can go from beginners to experts. This project was developed on one of the graduate graphic design seminars at the University of Florida. It consists of a school and fabrication lab for the local community. The classes follow a highly practical and creative style of education. It's all about making, while working on your own ideas within the general framework of each class. The proposed solution would also help establish a maker community by having students helping each other on their projects, by bringing experts from the industry to also give workshops, by having an online shop to sell student work and swag from the school, and by making sure that the students' voices are heard when it comes to ideas for new classes or ways to bring what they need to accomplish their maker goals.

ZOO BRASÍLIA

This brand identity project was made for my graduation Major in graphic design at the University of Brasilia and came to fruition after being presented to the board of directors of the actual zoo. The public didn’t know what the former brand of the zoo looked like because it wasn’t propoerly presented to them and it didn’t have a solid visual identity, which caused a series of incoherent applications of the brand. Besides, in face of upcoming events such as the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the zoo was already having transformations for better accomodation of its audience. The solution is simple and direct in order to be quickly recognized and remembered among so many attractions from the zoo. The logotype also represents the wide open spaces, a feature from both the zoo and the city of Brasilia. The swash in the Z was inspired by a jaguar’s tail, the biggest cat from Brazil and can be also seen as a smile with the O characters representing two eyes.

CERAMIC LUNCHBOX

This project was done for the Ceramics Seminar class at the University of Florida. I collaborated with three ceramics graduate students on a sustainable to-go ‘toolbox’ for restaurant leftovers. It serves as an alternative to leaving food to the garbage, never to decompose, or taking them with the added environmental degradation of styrofoam, plastic or paper. The results were 8 slipcasted ceramic pieces with laser cut plexiglass lids. One of them was donated to the restaurant Civilization, in Gainesville, to be tested as a pilot. The lunchbox is offered as an alternative to the disposable bags and boxes that the restaurant normally has. An extra charge is added for it, but the customer can then use it wherever and/or bring it back to trade for a new one. The project concept is based on the increasing cultural change from those who want to help preserve the environment the way they can.

MONTE PARNASO

Monte Parnaso is a aesthetics treatment and dermatology clinic located in Brasilia. The studio where I work (Boibumbå) was responsible for their naming and brand identity. The name selected refers to Mount Parnassus, a mountain of limestone in central Greece that towers above Delphi. According to Greek mythology, it was the home of the nine Muses, goddesses of inspiration. Thus, the brand’s symbol consists of a nine-pointed star with triangles that represent the character M as well as the synthesis of a mount on the inside. Paintings with Mount Parnassus itself and realistic floral themes were used as illustrations to support the brand. These images reinforce natural beauty and give color and a feminine touch to the brand’s identity.

STATIONERY REDESIGN FOR APEX-BRASIL

Apex-Brasil is an agency that promotes Brazilian products and services abroad, attracting foreign investments to strategic sectors of the Brazilian economy. In 2013, after the release of their new brandbook, there was a need for a complete redesign of the company’s stationery, one of the main and strongest means of expression of a brand’s identity. Among many others, the project included pieces such as business card, a collection of envelopes, documents folder, letterheads, greeting cards and badges.

SHOPPING CART FOR PEOPLE WITH DWARFISM

This was my Major in industrial design graduation project. The idea was developed from the will to do something related to mobility that could solve one or more everyday problems that disabled people faced. After long researches of what kind of disability to approach, I ran into dwarfism, a forgotten minority that encounters many daily of challenges because they don’t fit in the society’s average standards. Examples of these challenges would be using an ATM, a public phone or shopping in a supermarket. The design of the shopping cart propose solutions to catching the products in the shelves, putting them in the cart, making contact with the cashier to pay for the items, among others. In order to give the cart an identity, the support of a brand was suggested. So, the colors and layout of the cart matches the identity of Extra, from the Pão de Açúcar Group, that already has several social practices.

PUBLIC EXTERNAL CONTROL OF MERCOSUL

This book was created when I was working at TCU, the Federal Court of Accounts of Brazil. It presents the role and results of the work of entities responsible for fiscalization of Southern Common Market (Mercosul). It has two versions, one in Portuguese and another in Spanish, the native languages of the members of Mercosul.

CATEDRAL

This is a 2D animation loop of Oscar Niemeyer's Cathedral in Brasilia being assembled and abducted. The project was done for the Digital Media Workshop class, during my graduate program at the University of Florida. It was my first experience with After Effects. We see a very modern and futuristic structure, almost like an alien spaceship that fell from the skies, being actually a religious symbol of morality and the traditional concept of family. So the idea was to make a pun by having the Cathedral abducted by a UFO. It also plays with the aura, that usually represents a heavenly light coming from the sky, being actually the abduction device of the ship. You can access the video on the following link: vimeo.com/249956338

ARABETTO

First opened in 2015, Arabetto is an Arab restaurant that is about to open its fourth branch, all in Brasilia. At Boibumbรก, we were responsible for the company's naming, logo, brand identity and various applications. The logotype came to be upon many iterations to find balance between legibility of western characters while introducing elements of Arab calligraphy. The identity relies on great quality photos of the products along with typical Islamic geometric patterns. Whenever the subject is the food or experience at the restaurant, a combination of hand drawn typefaces reinforce the sense of family recipes and cozy environment that the owners bring to the restaurant.
