Besides, he was very much involved in the students’ work of Shanghai YMCA during the Anti-Japanese War (1937-45). That experience shapes his theological mentality, focusing on the living interaction between Christianity and its socio-economic political context in China. In 1946, he was appointed mission secretary of the Canadian Student Movement. He was enrolled in the Union Theological Seminary of New York in 1947 and graduated with an M.A (1948). In the same year he started his ministry as mission secretary of World Student Christian Federation based in Geneva. In 1951, he, together with his wife and their newborn son, returned to serve the Church in China despite overseas friends’ kind dissuasion because of the Chinese religious difficulties or dangers heard abroad. In 1955, he was consecrated bishop of the Chinese Anglican Church. With the restoration of the religious freedom policy since 1979, Ting has become president of the newly established China Christian Council in 1980 (CCC), and chairperson of the restored National Committee of the Three Self Patriotic Movement (TSPM) until his retirement in 1997. From 1952 to 2010, he served as principal of Nanjing Union Theological Seminary despite the interval during the disastrous Great Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), and has trained a great number of church workers for the Chinese Church. One of his most important ministries at his old age is to promote the theological reconstruction movement (since 1998) in order to establish the theological selfhood of the Chinese Church. Meanwhile, since 1989, Ting has held high-ranking governmental position as vice chairperson of the China’s People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), which empowers him to protect the Church from the non-implementation of religious freedom policy at some places and to promote the normal Christian development through dialogues with the government. Ting has enjoyed a good longevity, that passed away on November 22, 2012.
