How we changed lives
CHANGING LIVES I
n 2012 JA-YE alumni launched the largest awareness campaing in its history with the aim to inspire, empower and challenge youths in Europe. The campaign meant to encourage JA-YE alumni to reach out to schools sharing their own personal stories. The idea for a joint alumni initiative was first hatched at the 2011 alumni conference in Munich. “The idea was for us to do what we do best, namely, share our story and inspire others to become achievers, we just wanted to do it together and to quantify this for the world to see - Louise Edwards, campaign initiator and Co-Campaign Manager. JA-YE Alumni Europe set itself an ambitious goal: reach 100 000 students with a little bit more than one year.
134 362 young people
were reached by JA-YE alumni
In the middle of 2012 the campaign went global as a Youth in Action grant supported the expansion of the outreach initiative. China, South Korea, Brazil and Kenya joined resulting in a connection forming between alumni from four different world parts with individual alumni achieving together. The Changing Lives Campaign gave a unique platform to JA-YE alumni from all around the world to support what they believe in. Young people organized themselves, trained and motivated each other across borders. The official closure of the campaign took place at the Gala Dinner of the JA-YE Alumni Europe Annual Conference in Tallinn, August 2013 where we celebrated the impressive results:
countries worldwide took part in the campaign

35 During the Final Summit awards for the best performing countries and individuals in different categories were given.

How we met in Tallinn
JA-YE ALUMNI EUROPE 10TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
n 2013 JA-YE Alumni Europe held its 10th international conference in Tallinn, Estonia from 21-25 of August. The conference brought together 110 entrepreneurial-minded young people from 23 countries around the world. This was the first truly global confe- rence, as besides the European alumni it also welcomed participants from Kenya, India, China and Brazil. For 5 days Tallinn became an international hub for young people representing Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Kenya, India, Italy, Latvia, Norway, Portugal, Serbia, Sweden and Switzerland!
This year the topic of the conference was „120H Innovation Camp“ and the aim was to introduce the concept of innovation camps in the most practical way – learning by
doing. Throughout the 5 days of the event participants had a chance to participate in inspiring lectures and workshops given by professionals on their own field which helped them to follow the challenge of “120H Innovation Camp”.
The conference brought together 110 entrepreneurialminded young people
from 23 countries
around the world.
Of course networking and strengthening relationship between alumni was not forgotten. Also a brand new “24H European Innovation Camp Manual” created by Estonian alumni organization SENT was presented during the conference. For second consecutive year we had a great joy to welcome Intel ISEF participants. Intel is a good partner of JA-YE Europe and their alumni wish to start a network like ours. Also the global winners of the JA Social Innovation Relay – Young Innovators from India, participated at the JA-YE Alumni Europe conference as part of their award.
35 During the conference Changing Lives Final Summit also took place. This finalized the amazing initiative which was brought to life by our very own alumni networks. At the gala dinner of the alumni conference the most successful countries and individuals were awarded. Read more about the Changing Lives campaign on page XXXX.
On behalf of the organizers and European Board I wish to thank all our partners and participants who made this event possible!

My name is Dominik Hillbrand and I am an Austrian Alumni. I have been a part of the Austrian Alumni Network since the early stages and had the chance to be part of it's development. At the moment I am student in Graz. One of my peaks was the chance to give a class on creativity to an Austrian/Czech Alumni audience where I could put the rhetorical
training I received within my studies into practice and forward some of my knowledge. I appreciate the new possibilities, offered by the international Alumni family and the chance to have an impact on interesting, young people. JA Austrian Alumni positively effects the message of young students, like me and takes it to a higher level.

One of the driving forces behind JA-YE Alumni Bulgaria has for a long time been Boris Kolev. Having not missed a single national or international Alumni conference between 2006 and 2011, he is the picture of dedication. In 2007, Boris started his own marketing business with some Alumni friends. The company, JT International, had its foundation in the JA Company Programme but grew to new heights
quickly. Currently, there are over 40 full-time employees in the company and Boris has received plenty of prizes for his dedication, including awards from Forbes Magazine and BusinessWeek. Even though Boris leads a busy life now, JA-YE Alumni still hold a special place in his heart: “I cannot forget where I started and the JA spirit still lives in me.

The series of Alumni Coffee, an informal gathering in a local café with an external business guest, continued very successfully during 2013. JA Alumni Czech Republic managed to organise ten events in three cities, where over 100 young entrepreneurship-enthusiasts met, discussed and shared their ideas. In the end of 2013 they organised the unique Alumni Coffee: Christmas Edition in Vienna together with JA Alumni Austria.
The concept has received very good feedback from The Association of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises and Crafts of the Czech Republic, who would like to cooperate in organising these successful events throughout the whole country. JA Alumni Czech Republic is looking forward to meeting new business guests and strengthening both their personal and Alumni network on future Alumni Coffees.

In October 2013, YEAD had its ten years anniversary. The whole YEAD union was geared and some international Alumni friends were also present. The day started with a reception where partners and sponsors were invited. During the reception, YEAD showed the incredibly good video with greetings from all their Alumni friends. It was very heart-warming and everybody was smiling and
taking about how great this network is. Afterwards, everyone gathered at the anniversary party. Activities during the party included some nominations, a song and a President quiz. It was a wonderful evening where the atmosphere could not be better. People were dancing until the early morning hours and everyone had a fun evening in the right Alumni spirit.

Last year, the biggest and most international event in the history of the Estonian alumni organisation happened. During five days at the end of August in the lively capital city of Tallinn, Alumni from all over Europe and guests from China, India, Brazil and Kenya had the opportunity to enjoy a truly multicultural company. Altogether, 23 countries were represented, making up nearly 120 participants. The main theme of the conference “120h Innovation Camp” was inspired by the main activity of
SENT – the 24h Camp. Therefore, in addition to lectures and workshops, the participants were actively engaged in solving a business challenge, which turned out to be an enthralling competition. The gala dinner was an emotional one, as it marked the last evening together for this amazing group of people and also the final summit of the Changing Lives campaign. The Estonian Alumni hope that the bar is well set for the future conferences!

During the cold winter months, JA-YE Alumni Finland had one of the nicest events of the year: a festive pre-Christmas party. A small café was booked for the occasion, with an arrangement to get some of the day’s food from the cafeteria for the guests. There were also some special Finnish holiday pastries served. The evening ended up having a wonderful mixture of Mediterranean and Italian foods
from the café, coupled with the traditional Finnish Christmas foods. In addition to that, there was an awesome group of people present: from active alumni to friends of the alumni such as business partners, senior alumni and future alumni. It was definitely a Christmas party that brought people together!

The German National Competition of the 2013 Company Programme took place in Mainz. The winner of every state of Germany was invited to present their business model in front of a top-class jury. JENZ was there to promote the Alumni network and to get in contact with the highly professional pupils. The event was held at the football stadium of the 1. FC Mainz, the Coface Arena, and since the weather was great the location was even better. After the competition in the stadium there was an
after-show party at the MS Loreley, a big ship where the eventful day was concluded with a musical interlude and dinner. While shipping on the Rhine the pupils, their teachers, employees of the Cologne Institute for Economic Research and the members of JENZ got together, celebrated and had a really good time. These days showcased the great spirit and high potential of JENZ. JA-YE really connects and JENZ are proud to be a part of this family.

As a part of the Changing Lives campaign, the Greek Alumni network organized the Changing Lives CafÊ – their first official event as an Alumni organization! In collaboration with Microsoft, GetBusy.gr and SEN/JA Greece, the event took place in July and had thirty participants. The agenda consisted of presentations by managers from Microsoft and GetBusy.gr, discussion with managers and partici-
pants, a case study on how to be an effective young manager and teamwork on a challenge. SEN/JA Alumni Greece are very proud about this first event. Not only because it is their first event, but also because the feedback from both participants and hosts (Microsoft Hellas and SEN/JA Greece) was exceptional and boosted their morale to keep trying to make a difference, no matter what!

”#L4Dit just finished a hard day that teached me how long is the road. I'm not yet at the start line! Thanks Junior Achievement” That is the tweet of Andrea Mariani, 21 years old and Finance and Fundraising Responsible for Alumni Italy, after his "Leaders for a day" experience. The event took place in Milano the 10th of December for ten young guys and girls selected directly from their Leaders. The Italian
Alumni are really proud of this first time, at first because the work-figures were very different: young entrepreneurs, CEO’s, financial officers, lawyers, social responsibility and HR. That is so important because everyone is a leader in their own way. They are also really proud because of the long and productive collaboration with the JA offices permitted the matching of young entrepreneurial people with real leaders.

The Latvian JA-YE Alumni team have been active participants in student company seminars and trade fairs since the beginning. The year 2013 was a shift in the JA-YE Alumni Latvia activities, as they organised their first event in collaboration with the European commission, the Youth in Action Programme and JA-YE Latvia. The business idea creation challenge “1440 min Ideju Izaicinājums” took place in Riga in November, with the
goal to inspire those who are not yet involved in JA-YE activities. 28 students got the opportunity to develop a sustainable business idea connected to information technology. The event was successful and has already created interest from schools and students for a future continuation, which means: more success stories, more sustainable ideas and the fact that JA–YE Latvia Alumni can create an experience worth spreading!

JA-YE Alumni Malta organised a Certificate Ceremony for the Company Programme participants, which allowed them the opportunity to meet, integrate, and network in a non-competitive environment for the first time since the start of the 2013 Company Programme. This event celebrated the highlights of their journey: pictures and videos from the
year were shown and certificates were given to all the attendees. Maltese Alumni also gave a short session about the importance of networking. This event was used to mark the end of one experience, the Company Programme, leading to the start of a new one: JA-YE Alumni Malta - a network for Entrepreneurship.

The National Coordinators Meeting (NCM) was held in Oslo, from 21st to 24th of March 2013. The Norwegian Alumni organization was proud to welcome both National and International Coordinators from all of the JA-YE Alumni Europe countries. It is
probably one of the biggest and most spectacular events JA-YE Alumni Norway has ever hosted, and they are very satisfied with the outcome. They will definitely keep The NCM in mind while planning future events!

In April 2013, the Trade Fairs for the Company Competition in Portugal took place. JA Alumni Portugal was present in two of them: in Porto and Lisbon. Twenty teams, or around 80 students were competing for a spot in the National Competition. The Alumni presence clearly represented a huge landmark in their relationship with the students and JA Portugal. JA Alumni Portugal had the
opportunity to not only give an Alumni Award to a team, thus granting their presence in the next stage of the competition, but also to interact with them directly, play the usual Alumni games and make themselves known. As a result, they had around 40 volunteers amongst them to help new teams from this year, which was one of the biggest successes in 2013.

2013 was one of the greatest years for the Serbian Alumni network. Alumnize.RS proudly stands on the front position in Europe when it comes to the Changing Lives campaign. They changed 23 669 lives in 2013, and are still counting. However, the crown of the year was the first National Alumnize.RS Conference that took place in August. It gathered former and current students of the entrepreneurship programs by JA
Serbia. The idea was to connect and motivate young and ambitious people who have JA Serbia experiences in common, in order to create a bigger network of future Serbian and European leaders and entrepreneurs. The project was supported by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the Serbian Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Serbian Ministry of Commerce.

Luis and Paulina, two Spanish Alumni, have a real success story from 2013 to tell. After winning the National Competition for University Entrepreneurs, they began to receive requests for budget web design and development almost daily - but they had not even founded the company yet! Luis and Paulina set up as quickly as they could, and founded Clever Consul-
ting with a start-up capital of â‚Ź0. With graduates, highlighters and their two personal laptops, they started designing and building web projects. Since then a lot has happened: the company now has 12 employees and has helped over 400 clients in various countries make their web projects a reality - and more importantly, to feel proud of them.

In 2013, a mini-enterprise called Sackstarch, which was founded within the Swiss YE Company Programme, got nominated for the Top 5 of the Startups.ch Awards one of Switzerland’s most prestigious entrepreneurship awards. These six young students design bags out of the remnants of the sunblind-production and sell them all over the country. Competing
with them were four nationally well-established companies, who had already been working on their projects for several years. The young start-up won the Audience Award, with the prize of 20'000 Swiss Francs (17’000 €). Sackstarch was converted into a limited company and is still run by its original founders. For the future we wish good luck!
